Blackberry has temporarily halted the rollout of its free Messenger service for Android and Apple devices after the software was leaked. A version of the Android app was posted online on Friday - a day ahead of its scheduled launch - and was subsequently shared via the Crackberry forum. Blackberry had already begun publishing the iPhone edition in some nations when it announced that the unofficial app was causing it unspecified "issues". It paused the rollout as a result. "Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but [will release it] only when it's ready and we know it will live up to your expectations," Blackberry social media manager Luke Reimer wrote in a blog. For the time being, iPhone owners in Australia, India, Malaysia and other countries where the software was briefly made available can continue using the service. However, the company said it had disabled the problematic Android app. It is the latest bad news for the company, which announced last week that it was cutting 4,500 jobs and warned it would post as much as a $995m (£621m) loss when it reported its second-quarter earnings this week. The company offered no further comment when asked by the BBC what issues had been caused by the app leak. Software strategy Blackberry has struggled of late to keep pace with Apple and products running Google's Android operating system. Globally it now also lags behind Microsoft's Windows Phone ecosystem in terms of sales. Despite this, its Blackberry Messenger product - known as BBM - has stood out as a major success. The software offers an alternative to SMS messages - which cost money on some subscription plans - as well as other voice and screen-sharing facilities. It has proven to be especially popular with younger phone owners. The app rollout is intended to address competition from Whatsapp, Viber and Skype which offer similar facilities and work across different mobile platforms. Some analysts had warned that by allowing its software to run on rival handsets Blackberry might make its own handsets appear less attractive to the public. However, that has become a moot point following the firm's announcement on Friday that it was going to exit the consumer market and focus instead on selling services to business customers. http:///s0HgbXA7Qj |
Modest. I just love the simplicity about the burial arrangement. Indeed, Iju-odo has lost a true son. Wish I could be there to pay my last respect to this great man. He was a Governor for all and not a particular region. |

The United States’ Diversity Visa Lottery program will no longer be open to Nigerians, the U.S. Department of State has said. A statement released by the Department on Sunday, listed Nigeria as one of the countries barred from participating in the upcoming DV-2015 According to the statement, the disqualification from the program is because “more than 50,000 natives of these countries immigrated to the United States in the previous five years.” “For DV-2015, natives of the following countries are not eligible to apply, because more than 50,000 natives of these countries immigrated to the United States in the previous five years: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam”. It added that “Changes in eligibility this year: For DV-2015, natives of Nigeria are no longer eligible”. However, since entries are based on country of birth, Nigerians born in eligible countries can still apply. Many other African countries, however, remain eligible to participate in the program. The department listed African countries that are eligible for the DV-2015 to include people from Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Cote D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Djibouti, Egypt*, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger,Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles and Sierra Leone. Machine guns and automatic rifles were handed out to winners of a religious competition organised by al-Qaeda in Yemen, it's been reported. According to the News Yemen website, the contest was held during the fasting month of Ramadan in the south-eastern governorates of Ibb, Ad-Dali and al-Bayda. The prizes, awarded last week, included Russian-made Kalashnikov rifles, Chinese machine guns, Austrian Glock pistols, as well as motorcycles and other gifts. The religious competition is considered to be the first public activity organised in Yemen by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) since government troops forced its fighters to withdraw from the neighbouring regions of Abyan and Shabwah in the summer of last year. News Yemen quoted a reporter who said that a large number of people had taken part in the al-Qaeda event and that the group was now concentrating on raising its profile by giving priority to religious activities and social work. Correspondents add that AQAP is also trying to capitalise on growing anti-American sentiments among the population. US drone strikes have been effective in killing senior al-Qaeda leaders in Yemen but civilians have also died, raising tensions in the country. http:///G4dPZo2iS0 |
A coconut has been detained by Maldivian police on suspicion of vote-rigging in a key presidential election. The coconut, described as "young", was found near a school that will be used as a polling station on Saturday on the remote Kaafu atoll, one of the hundreds of islands that comprise the Indian Ocean archipelago state. Though the population of the Maldives is Sunni Muslim, continuing belief in magic is widespread in rural areas. Coconuts are often used in rituals and inscribed with spells. The hundreds of thousands of international tourists who travel to the Maldives usually stay in isolated resorts and have no contact with local people other than staff. The local Minivan news website reported that police "took the coconut into their possession" around 7.05am on Tuesday, after they received a complaint about the suspicious fruit near the school on the Guraidhoo Island, which lies 130 miles from the capital, Male, and has a population of around 2,000. "The 4in coconut had a [Koranic verse] written in Arabic [on it] and was lying on the ground near the school, easy for the public to see. It seems like it was a joke, just a prank, so that people will become aware," Minivan quoted a source on Guraidhoo saying. Minivan said its source had suggested the coconut "was a lesson for islanders not to practise black magic in an attempt to influence voting, and that the polling area would be closely monitored to prevent such activities from occurring". Earlier this year, school authorities on Guraidhoo resisted using their buildings as a polling station, citing previous instances when problems had been caused by magic. Their fears were only partly allayed when the national election commission said it would accept responsibility "if anyone falls under a spell or comes down ill". The election has been bitterly contested, with Mohammed Nasheed, the former president, who claims he was ousted last year in a coup, taking on one of the Maldives' biggest businessmen, the outgoing president and the half-brother of former dictator, Mamoun Abdul Gayoom. Nasheed, an internationally respected human rights and climate-change campaigner, hopes to win outright this weekend and avoid a run-off second round of voting. A magician summoned by police established that the coconut was innocent, local officials have said. No arrests have been made. http:///WJQA1m3aDc |

A 21-year-old Polish woman is making headlines for her ambitious quest to have sex with 100,000 men in cities across the globe. Ania Lisewska said she plans to spend at least 20 minutes with each partner on a journey she hopes will take her around the world, the Huffington Post reports. The 21-year-old has reportedly already had 284 intimate partners despite having a serious boyfriend. Her current partner said he was "not thrilled" with his girlfriend's hobby but "had come to terms with it". Ms Lisweska's bizarre quest has led some in the media to question her claims. The 21-year-old said she has set up a website to facilitate her rendezvous but, unlike the Pole herself, it appears not to have seen much action — perhaps because it does not work, except for the front page. Other sceptics have questioned the feasibility of her plan — bedding 100,000 men for 20 minutes each would take almost four years not allowing time for anything else. Ms Lisewska has also said the she is aiming for the Guinness Book of World Records but the prestigious publisher has never judged sexually-related records. She has also shunned media requests. "I want men from Poland, Europe and all around the world. I Love Intimacy, fun and men," Ms Lisewska said. "In Poland the subject of sex is still taboo and anyone who wants to fulfill their intimate fantasies is considered a deviant, a LovePeddler or mentally ill." Ms Lisewska began her challenge in Warsaw last month and reportedly plans to Romance her way across Poland before conquering neighbouring nations. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/08/30/08/42/woman-aims-to-have-sex-with-100000-men |

Kenyan trio in 'wife-sharing' deal 26 August 2013 Last updated at 11:57 Steven Mwendwa said he would pay the bride price Two Kenyan men have signed an agreement to "marry" the same woman, reports say. The woman had been having affairs with both men for more than four years and apparently refused to choose between them. The agreement sets out a rota for Sylvester Mwendwa and Elijah Kimani to stay in her house and states they will both help raise any children she bears. Lawyers said their "marriage" would be legally recognised if they could prove polyandry was part of their custom. 'Jealousy' Mr Mwendwa and Mr Kimani drafted the agreement after realising they had both been having an affair with the woman in Mombasa County for more than four years, the local Daily Nation newspaper reports. Community policing officer Adhalah Abdulrahman persuaded the two men to marry the woman after he saw them fighting over her, it reports. "We have agreed that from today we will not threaten or have jealous feelings because of our wife, who says she's not ready to let go of any of us," the agreement says, Kenya's NTV station reports. "Each one will respect the day set aside for him. We agree to love each other and live peacefully. No-one has forced us to make this agreement," it adds. Mr Mwenda said her parents had given their blessing, while he is planning to pay the bride price. The woman, a widow with two children, did not want to be named. Kenyan family lawyer Judy Thongori told the Daily Nation that the law does not explicitly forbid polyandry - a woman having more than one husband. "The laws we have do not talk about it but for such a union to be recognised in Kenya, it has to be either under the statutory law or as customary marriage. The question we should ask now is whether these people come from communities that have been practising polyandry," she is quoted as saying. Polygamous marriages often take place in Kenya, but wife-sharing is unheard of, correspondents say. http:///S6HBKJxacr |
Leave NPC boss alone. His claim that Nigeria has not had a credible census since 1813 has unsettled the Northerners. Let him do his job and reveal the actual population of the North to the world. Must Jonathan always dance to the tune of these Northerners? Go and investigate other office holders and stop witchunting this man. |
Contrary to the general notion here that the formation of this new party will weaken GEJ's chances of winning the next presidential elections, the opposite is actually the case as these new parties ie APC, PDM and the one being fronted by these set of governors are much likely to field Northern candidates thereby breaking up northern votes among the various northern candidates and leaving GEJ to carry the day.
And if they decide to support APC presidential candidate? |
This is the beauty of politics. No political party should be allowed to become too powerful, less they take the citizens for a ride. PDP has been winning elections not because they performed well in office but because they have become too strong, this explains why they act with impunity. I support these emerging parties(even if they might have their selfish agenda). They will act as reality check to PDP. |
