Education / #justiceforsylvester: 5 PR Lessons School Administrators Can Learn From Dowen Co by Reeda45: 8:58am On Dec 07, 2021
Sylvester Oromoni. Dowen College.

These two names will ring a bell on the minds of Nigerians for a long time to come.

But not for good. Their story leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, one that arouses a voracious appetite for revenge and untempered justice, and leaves behind a toxic fume of unrestful regret and unbearable pain that even time may find difficult to heal.

Sylvester, a bubbly 12-year-old boy who had a bright future (he wanted to become a pilot, according to his father) was allegedly beaten, assaulted and poisoned by his school mates because he refused to join their cult group. And this allegedly happened right under the nose of guardians and administrators in one of the most expensive boarding schools in Lagos, Dowen College.

But while the news shocked many, what angered most was the first statement released online by the school - a poorly, unempathetic set of paragraphs that were allegedly full of lies and tried to exonerate the school from blame. In fact, in the statement the school called the accusations 'wild social media tales' which were 'strange' and 'unbelievable'.

There was no way such could happen in their 'faith-based' school, with all the anti-bullying policies in place, and their own investigations as well discovered that what happened to the boy was just a mere hip accident on the football field.

Many years ago, when social media was not accessible to many, this would have passed by barely noticed and life would go on. But today, social media has made it nearly impossible to hide the truth with video evidence calling one's bluff. All that is required is a simple upload and click that would send millions of people come knocking on your door in an instant.

But this piece is not about throwing blames. Thankfully, police investigations are ongoing and they will get to the root of the matter and hopefully, bring all culprits and accomplices to book.

This piece is about how schools and their administrators should handle such Public Relations incident when such arises. Dowen College missed it and are paying dearly for it. You shouldn't.

Here are 5 things schools should learn from this unfortunate story.

1. Transparency is key in building trust between your school and the publics. When a negative incident happens, people expect you to be clear and open. While you may not want to expose all details especially if police investigation is ongoing, don't hide behind the screen and dish out half-truths. If you do this and indisputable evidences are released against you, it will be difficult to pull back the rope.

2. Be empathic. Show your compassionate human side. Trying to show you are right while disparaging the situation and people involved will only end up making you look like a monster in the eyes of everyone.

3. Be neutral. In your official statement, don't defend yourself. If you are on the right, the truth will eventually shine for all to see. Keep your language formal, respectful and objective.

4. Beyond putting up anti-bullying policies (or any other policy for that matter), follow it up with appropriate action plan. It should not only end in brochures or posters on school wall. Here are a few ideas of what you can do:

(a) Appoint a trained official that will be in charge of that policy and attend to rising issues efficiently and effectively. He/she will give reports to the school management.

(b) Talk about it on school assembly with drama and other fun activities.

(c) Get an anti-bullying song and teach the learners.

(d) Have anti-bullying forums where learners can ask questions and talk about their experiences.

5. Hire a Public Relations (PR) Officer as a full staff or consultant, as the case may be or your budget allows. These professionals are trained to handle crisis situations online or offline. They are expert at writing the appropriate statements, helping to manage your school's image and keeping your community engaged. Don't do things unprofessionally and end up rending your school's brand and reputation to shreds. You don't want to lose all you have built over the years because a poorly written statement or strategy.

In conclusion, Your school's life is in your hands. Don't wait until a bad thing happens before you act. Dowen College had no idea this would blow up. It could have been any one, any school. Proactiveness is key.

Thank you for reading.

Why is this lady not yet under arrest?! angry

The government imposed a curfew which you and your co-travellers disobeyed!

That is the reason why we have this calamity on our hands.

As a result of your disobedience of the government's order innocent lives have been lost and people's businesses have been wrecked rendering them bankrupt!!! sad

If you don't know the right thing, just do proper research before you comment; otherwise, shut up!

Which curfew did they disobey?

Government said 9pm.

When you see something wrong and you keep quiet, you are an accomplice.

Put yourself in your sister's shoe and ask yourself if you would want your own sis to keep such from you. There, you have your answer.

But know how you will put it. Be wise and tactical. She will get it.

By the way, someone should tell me if the 'low key' will not involve billions of Naira.
Music/Radio / FEM By Davido: A ‘holy Holy’ Review From A Christian Feminist by Reeda45: 4:04pm On Sep 16, 2020
“Baby, it seems Davido just released a new video.”

“Yes, and it’s very nice.”

Meh! I shrugged my shoulders with the nonchalance of an overfed, lazy cat, wondering if I should waste my ‘precious’ MB on a YouTube video that wouldn’t add to my bank account.

“I’m serious! You should watch it.”, he insisted.

“Okay.” I yielded reluctantly. I would give it a try.

You see, my husband is a trained musician, so when he recommends songs, I don’t take it with a pinch of salt.

So, there I went. Eyes arched in preconceived disgust, ready to fish out all the ‘dirty’ scenes; my ears already cringing, anticipating the ‘tombolo’ sound common in Nigerian songs, as I clicked the play button.

To me, the song was dead even before it began. And I could not wait to give my husband my iconic I-told-you-so killer look.

You see, I grew up in a conservative home. We were so conservative that we shunned all songs that did not have God or Jesus in it. Heck, we didn’t even have TV for many years! It was a taboo to listen to songs from musicians like Davido. How dare you? You want to go to hell?

But as I grew and schooled, I made great friends along the way, some of whom had upbringing different from mine and so, from time to time, I had the chance of listening to one ‘worldly’ song or the other. That was how I fell in love with Shania Twain, Westlife and Asa.

But musicians like Davido. No way! Those ones were way down in the list. Maybe because I had never been a fan of Afropop. Or because their lyrics and music videos were sometimes too explicit for my ‘holy-holy’ persona.

Truth be told, I think Davido is arguably Nigeria’s best Afropop singer. I mean, look at how his songs blow like ‘Fia’ within days.

Even when you don’t have interest, they are drummed in your ears everywhere you go, chasing you like a swarm of houseflies going after a pot of sour egusi soup. Sometimes, I find myself listening and even unconsciously humming alongside (before I caution myself ).

That’s how popular Davido is. Children o, adult o, (almost) everyone connects with him, though not all agree with his lifestyle and kind of music.

So, when I saw a snippet of this new video he was shooting trend on Twitter recently, I didn’t give it a second thought. I had bigger things to worry about.

However, some days later, on a ‘jobless’ Sunday morning, I got into YouTube and BOOM!, the new video stared hard at me in the face. It was the No. 1 trending video.

OMG! 4.3million views in just 2 days!

“FEM”, it was titled. I grew up with that word as a child. My mother often used it on me when she wanted to shut my rambling mouth up.

“Mummy, but…”

“FEM!”, she would say, with a warning finger over her lips. And that would be the end of the conversation.

The title got me. And of course, my husband’s push. So I joined the millions of viewers to enlarge Davido’s pocket while mine shrank in size.

For 3.24 minutes, I fixed my eyes on the screen, anxiously waiting to give my verdict.

But I got a shocking surprise.

I watched it over and over again.

Ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters, I am ‘ashamed’ to confess that I enjoyed the video.

For once, I am not repulsed by a secular Nigerian music video usually characterized by the glorification of money, fame, drugs and the curvy backside of feminity.

The music video is clean, though it is not the same with the lyrics, which contains a few explicit words. Some have said it is a diss song to a certain BET award nominee, hence the strong words.

But the visuals, the sound itself, the flow, the presentation, each of these score a good point in my view.

It is a breath of fresh air to know that a music video can go viral without a woman twerking her ‘bumbum’ in our faces or giving an erotic dance that promotes sexual gratification.

Davido may go ahead to produce other videos that sexualise women and promote nudity in the future (unfortunately, that is what sells in today’s world), but he has proven a point that a music video can sell without vixens twerking all over the place.

As a woman, a Christian feminist too, I’m proud of that.

For this music video, Davido, I doff my ‘holy-holy’ hat for you.

Biko, before the matter get serious, make I end here.

FEM!

Religion / 10 'little' Things We Forget To Thank God For by Reeda45: 5:03pm On Sep 12, 2020
Giving thanks to God should be one of the easiest things to do, but it is an act many actually forget to do.

We remember God when we need Him to do something for us. And when we get what we want, we forget to go back to appreciate Him.

Just like the 10 lepers who were healed by Jesus on his way to a village close to Galilee. Only one returned to thank Jesus. Only one.

To think he wasn’t even a Jew. One of God’s own people. He was a Samaritan. A reject. He could have walked away like the other nine. But he chose to remember and appreciate the source of his healing.

I wonder how Jesus would have felt about the ungrateful nine, knowing well beforehand that they wouldn’t return, and yet, he still chose to heal them.

I wonder how He feels every time He does something for us and we don’t even say ‘thank you’; yet, every time we go back to him again, He still answers us.

What a loving father he is!

But that doesn’t mean we should take His love for granted. Especially when He does seemingly ‘little’ things for us.

Some people only remember to thank God when big things happen in their lives, like the birth of a baby, promotion at work, getting a new car, buying a house or even passing an exam.

Those things that people feel are big achievements in life.

But when the little miracles occur, they don’t consider it a testimony of God’s goodness.

Paul knew the importance of Thanksgiving, and that was why he admonished believers to give thanks to God in “everything”

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“Everything” means both the big and small blessings.

So what are these ‘little’ things we forget to thank God for every day?

Let’s dig in!

1. For the breath in your nostrils
That you are alive every passing day is one of the greatest miracles of life. Remember, only the living can praise the Lord.

2. For the food you eat (and sometimes waste)
If you know the millions of people wanting to be in your shoe, you will thank God for that slice of bread or snack you are about to consume.

3. For good health
A visit to the hospital will teach you to appreciate God for the sound mind and body you are enjoying right now.

4. For having a family
Some people don’t have anyone to love or love them in return. They don’t have anybody to call family. But you do.

See, your family members may be annoying at times, and sometimes, you just want to knock their teeth out. But they still love you and are there for you when you need them. Being alone in this world is not something you will like to experience.

5. For good friends
Yes. You should thank God for giving you great friends who have your back, especially when going through difficult times.

6. For your church
The church is a community of people knitted together by the love of Christ. If you are part of a church, you get to enjoy a sweet fellowship that keeps your innerman happy and satisfied. Remember to thank God you are part of His people.

7. For the challenges you face
Now, this may sound creepy. Why should I thank God when I’m in problem? See, if everything is rosy in life, you will not even remember there is a God in Heaven. God allows obstacles in your life to strengthen you and remind you that you are not alone. He is there with you all the way. Remember, He will not allow you to pass through temptation (challenges) you cannot overcome. He is only preparing you for a better future; so thank Him!

8. For divine protection
That you go out and return safely to your home everyday is a miracle on its own. And it’s not by your own hand. If you know the number of accidents that happen every day, eh! on the same road you take, you will appreciate God more.

9. For a glorious future
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Need I say more?

10. For your redemption and eternal life

Many Christians are waiting for God to do a ‘big’ miracle in their lives, forgetting that God has already done the greatest miracle of all – the sacrifice of His son. And that is why we can call him ‘Father’. Always remember to thank God for redeeming you from sin and giving you the hope of eternal life.

To conclude, Colossians 3:16-17 teaches us how to give thanks to God.

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

What are you grateful to God for today?

Religion / Viral Photo Of Port Harcourt Serial Killer David West Wearing A Church Tag by Reeda45: 1:58pm On Jan 18, 2020
Photos showing suspected serial killer Gracious David West wearing a tag of Pastor David Ibiyeomie‘s church while in detention, has gone viral.

Recall that West, in 2019, was arrested for killing over 15 girls in different hotels in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Owerri. His usual method was to get the girls to his hotel room, threaten them, then tie their hands and legs with clothes before killing them. Police say the girls may also have been used for ritual purpose.

Gory photos of his victims shocked the internet when they were released.

However, the latest photo of him shows him wearing a tag advertising a programme organised by Salvation Ministries, Port Harcourt. The programme is titled ‘5 Days Of Glory’ and has the face of Pastor David Ibiyeomie on it.

Reactions to this development has been mixed. While some say perhaps,West could have really changed from his bad ways, others have criticised the church for associating with such ‘criminal’.

What do you think?

Religion / "I Want My Daughter Back Home" - Mother To Leah Sheribu by Reeda45: 9:54am On Jun 22, 2018
Mrs Rebecca Sheribu, the mother of abducted Dapchi schoolgirl, Leah Sheribu, has revealed that what she wants most in the world is to see her daughter back home again.

Speaking with former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri, via phone, she described her daughter as “wonderful”, “hardworking” and “obedient”.

Omokri took to Twitter to report the conversation. He wrote, “Yesterday, we spoke to Leah Sheribu’s mum, Rebecca. Asked to describe Leah, Rebecca sighed and said “Leah is a wonderful child, hardworking and obedient to us her parents”. Asked what she wants most in the world, she responded “to sleep and wake up to see that Leah is back home”.

Recall that Leah Sheribu was among the 110 innocent girls abducted by Boko Haram terrorist sect in February this year. However, unlike many others who have been returned to their homes and families, Leah Sheribu was held back by the sect because she refused to renounce her faith in Jesus.

Nigerians and Christians have called on the Federal Government to ensure the release of Leah with hashtags like #PrayForLeah and #BringBackLeahSheribu. Her life remains an inspiration.

God is still working miracles!

Gospel artiste Nathaniel Bassey shared this testimony of a lady identified as Ndanatswa-Maggie Masek, who had advanced breast cancer and had a short time to live.

In spite of various medical treatments, the cancer remained. However, after participating in the two editions of Nathaniel Bassey’s ‘Halleluyah challenge’ and having strong faith in God, the unbelievable happened.

Here is her testimony as shared by Bassey:

“Dear Pastor,

I am leaping with joy , my name is Ndanatswa -Maggie Maseko and please do not hide my name . I have sent you pictures on instagram . It’s been a long journey and l will try and summarise. I was diagnosed with locally advanced invasive lobular carcinoma left breast, grade 2 ER 8/8 HER2 negative, 5/8 nodes. I went through chemotherapy and radiotherapy only to be told that the disease was MORE locally advanced, the tumour was fixed to skin and chest wall. I was told that there was nothing which could be done anymore for me, the cancerous tumour was inoperable as it was attached to my chest wall and l should continue talking letrozole.

In other words, it meant that it was only a matter of time before l went to glory. Try and imagine how difficult it is to be told that you are going to die. I continued as normal because l refused to accept this terrible report, l told my family and close friends. I chose to trust God over what the doctors were saying. KICC(Chatham) is the church that l go to, pastor Matthew A Ashimolowo (2016) prayed for me and the whole church was in agreement. He rebuked the spirit of death, cursed cancer and l kept thanking God for prolonging my life.

Then pastor Nathaniel Bassey (2017) led the Hallelujah Challenge (Olowogbogboro and Open Heavens ) and l participated in both . Pastor Nathaniel came to London during the Olowogbogboro and l was ill, could not attend but my friend Sophia Francis attended and asked Pastor Nathaniel to pray for me over the phone and he did. During the Open Heavens people with cancer were prayed for, it was one of the diseases which was placed in Pastor Nathaniel’s spirit. Pastor Nathaniel was given a word by God and l quote, before this year ends 2017, you will hear a sound that will cause everything around you and within you to leap for joy. I kept reminding God of His word.

Yesterday (17/12/2017) pastor Mathew Ashimolowo shared a testimony of a man who was supernaturally healed of cancer. I tapped into the anointing and l danced before God for my healing. Today (18/12/2017) l went to Royal Marsden hospital.

Last week l had all sorts of scans and tests done. To the glory of God, the results show 2 EXTREMELY SMALL patches in my breast of which they are not even sure if its active cancer and that cancer never spread in my body. The consultant said it’s as if l have never had cancer. I broke down, cried and thanked God in front of the medical professionals. I was given a year to live, was told that my case is hopeless, and nothing can be done. I had cancer all over my left breast and under my armpit. Don’t tell me that God is not real. Will be having surgery to remove the EXTREMELY small patches, but l believe God will take the small patches too. So much l could have written but l had to summarise. I am leaping with joy, God is more than able and He is faithful. Just believe God one more time, He is a God of hopeless situations. Cancer met JESUS CHRIST .

2 years 6 months l had cancer and it was an aggressive type of cancer but it did not spread in my body . No-one can tell me that God is not real , l will call that person a liar . I know Olowogbogboro for myself and no-one can tell me otherwise . Everything around me and within me is leaping for joy.

Religion / I Will Beat Freeze And Conduct Deliverance On Him’ – Majek Fashek’s Manager by Reeda45: 7:36am On Dec 20, 2017
After OAP Daddy Freeze condemned Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of COZA for allowing Nigerian veteran musician, Majek Fashek to perform in COZA’s carol service (read that here), Fashek’s manager has come to the musician’s rescue.

In a video posted on Majek’s instagram page, the manager said he would beat up Daddy Freeze and conduct deliverance on him. Still lambasting Freeze, he advised the OAP to go back to listen to Majek’s songs and stop talking like a kind.

He wrote:

“There’s nothing wrong with a world class legend Majek Fashek who’s music sends the right message to be invited to perform in any church. To Daddy Freeze u need to do your research properly b4 wagging your mouth and speaking like a Kid. And as Majek has said you need to wake up for the kingdom of GOD is at Hand. @biodunfatoyinbothanks you once more for impacting positively into the life’s of Young Nigerian and making the believe in themselves.”

Would this finally end in the ring? We don’t know and we hope not.

Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo is yet to issue any statement about this. Perhaps, he has learned to keep quiet in issues like this. Daddy Freeze, too, is yet to reply as at the time of this report.

For those saying Pastor Kumuyi does not have a bank account, biko, explain this to me - whose signs those cheques worth millions of naira? He may not have a personal bank account, but he sure controls bank accounts.

Religion / ‘A Woman Who Shaves Her Eyebrow Will Not Submit To Her Husband’ – Reno Omokri by Reeda45: 5:03pm On Dec 19, 2017
Best selling author and pastor, Reno Omokri, in a recent tweet, stated that women who shave their eyebrow and draw it back by themselves cannot be submissive to their husbands, since they feel they can do a better job than God who gave them natural eyebrows.

Here is the tweet. Ladies, do you shave your eyebrows? And does it affect (or will affect) your submission to your husband?

"Only a fool marries a woman who shaves off her eyebrows and draws it back by herself. If she feels she can do a better job than God who designed her eyebrows, she certainly will not submit herself to her husband #RenosNuggets
