TV/Movies › #BBNaija2019: Khafi is a sex addict, she disturbs me a lot - Gedoni by References(op): 6:49pm On Jul 30, 2019
Big Brother Naija 2019 housemate, Gedoni, on Tuesday said #bbnaija housemate, Khafi, was a sex addict and disturbs him in the house a lot.

The #BBNaija love-birds had on three different occasions been caught in the house having sex.

The inseparable pair had been caught on camera having passionate sex under the sheets while other housemates were fast asleep.

However, Gedoni during a conversation with Frodd and Ike on Tuesday revealed that Khafi disturbs him every night.

He said he purposely eats kiwi most nights so he can get some space because she’s is allergic to it.

Gedoni said, ”Every night, she go dey disturb me, sometimes I go just deliberately carry kiwi put for mouth, she is allergic to it so she go kon free up.”

Meanwhile, Khafi had claimed she was celibate for eight years after her conversion to Christianity.

She was quoted as saying, “I was celibate when I was like 17 years and for 8 years after I became a Christian.”

“When I became a Christian, I just saw myself in a whole new light,” Khafi told Gedoni.

Sports › Desperate Nigerian Coaches Want The NFF To Sack Rohr - Pinnick by References(op):
President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick has revealed that some desperate coaches, who want to take over the Super Eagles’ job, are those engineering some Nigerians to call for the sack of coach Gernot Rohr.

Even before the Super Eagles beat Tunisia in the bronze medal match at the just concluded Egypt 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), some Nigerians had begun a campaign for the NFF to do away with Rohr, claiming that the coach had lost ideas on how to improve the nation’s football.

Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, Pinnick stated that no amount of campaign and blackmail against Rohr would force the NFF to change its stand about him.

“Does it really make sense for the NFF to sack Rohr now?” Pinnick asked. “What are his offenses? Some Nigerian coaches who are so desperate to take over the Super Eagles are those engineering people to mount pressure on the NFF to sack the coach. But we won’t give them that chance. We know them, and what they are capable of offering the nation as coaches. “Nobody can push us around again on issues concerning appointment of coaches. We gave some of them the chance to prove themselves in the past but failed woefully.”

“Rohr still has existing contract with the NFF and we believe in him. We appointed him in 2016 with the mandate to qualify Nigeria to Russia 2018 World Cup, and he did it. The Super Eagles finished unbeaten from a tough Group B that had Zambia, Cameroun and Algeria. We later extended his contract to 2020 after he qualified the team for the Nations Cup. The fact that the Super Eagles couldn’t win the AFCON title in Egypt is not enough for people to clamour for his sack. So many countries are looking for him (Rohr) as we speak. We should be thinking on how to build the team for future challenges and not how to look for money to pay off the coach and his assistance, and then begin the search for new ones. No, that is not in our agenda.

“I want Nigerians to remember where we are coming from. Before Rohr took over, we could not qualify for two editions of the Nations Cup. He qualified us to Russia 2018 with a game in hand and also booked the ticket to Egypt 2019 with a game in hand. And in Egypt, Rohr qualified us to the round of 16 with a game in hand. So, why should we sack him?,” Pinnick queried.

Foreign Affairs › Boris Johnson And Girlfriend, Carrie Symonds Move Into Downing Street by References(op): 5:01pm On Jul 29, 2019
Boris Johnson and his girlfriend Carrie Symonds moved into Downing Street on Monday, becoming the first unmarried couple to occupy the British prime minister’s official residence.

The change of guard at the famous address was prompted by Theresa May’s forced resignation under the pressures of the Brexit crisis.

The British tabloids have been preoccupied ever since by the new mop-topped leader and his girlfriend – who worked on Johnson’s successful 2012 re-election campaign as London mayor.

“The PM is officially moving in today and, yes, his partner will be living there,” a Downing Street spokeswoman said, ending weeks of speculation about the couple’s living arrangements.

In fact, Johnson, 55, and Symonds, 31, will not be living behind the famous black door at No 10 Downing Street.

The prestigious address will belong to new finance minister Sajid Javid, whose office is next door at No 11.

But No 11 also has a more spacious four-bedroom flat.

Former Labour prime minister Tony Blair was the first to arrange this apartment swap, and the tradition has stuck ever since, with May and her husband Philip also living at No 11.

Symonds, a former Conservative party spin doctor dubbed Britain’s “first girlfriend”, has been rarely seen in public since she and Johnson had a loud argument that saw one of their neighbours call the police last month.

The resulting media uproar forced the couple to move out.

Downing Street was at pains to stress that Symonds, who works for an environmental charity, will not have any publicly-funded staff.

“There won’t be any additional cost to the taxpayer,” the spokeswoman said.

Politics › Edo Crisis: No headway as group insists Buhari gave no re-proclamation directive by References(op): 2:59pm On Jul 29, 2019
There was confusion on Monday, as leader of a group loyal to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State maintained that there was no directive from President Muhammadu Buhari to issue a fresh proclamation for Edo State House of Assembly contrary to media report.

The leader, who preferred anonymity, said: “I was thoroughly briefed, there was no such directive; is Buhari supposed the person to direct Obaseki to issue a new proclamation letter; is proclamation done twice; is Governor Nasir el-Rufai his spokesperson; why is he the one telling Obaseki? He fired on phone.

He asserted: “The truth is that Obaseki said he would not attend a meeting fixed in Oshiomhole’s house and that he wants a neutral place. They held the first meeting in Ekiti House hosted by Governor Fayemi, el-Rufai was not even at that meeting. The next meeting, they booked a suite at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, which was where they met.”

“If there was such directive, I will tell you, there is nothing like that; we are embarrassed by the report of Buhari directing fresh proclamation, which is not so at. The members-elect are wasting their time, they were in Abuja, they have now relocated to Lagos, if they do not take time, the time they are legally allowed to stay outside will pass,” he added.

Vanguard, however, established that the Peace Committee on Edo State set up by President Muhammadu Buhari, headed by the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has not made much progress after two meetings, last week, following divergence on way forward.

A dependable source said, “Governor Godwin Obaseki is still insisting on the incumbent Speaker, Hon Francis Okiye or Hon Emmanuel Okoduwa, but the position of they are saying he should do the right thing, which is re-proclamation and lobby the lawmakers for his ideal candidate.”

According to the source, “The dilemma is that he (governor) has refused and that is why you noticed that there is no headway yet.”

Indication that the committee might not have it easy with Obaseki came when he insisted that venue of the foundational meeting, earlier scheduled to hold in Oshiomhole’s Abuja residence, be changed to a neutral venue and he carried the day.

Health › Going to bed early helps men produce high quality sperms - Study by References(op): 12:00am On Jul 29, 2019
Getting an early night sleep could help men conceive, according to a new study which found those who hit the hay before 10.30pm were up to four times more likely to have good quality sperm.

Men who got around eight hours a night were also more likely to have healthy sperm than those who got less than seven, the researchers from Aarhus University, Denmark.

Fertility experts said the findings suggest couples looking to conceive should consider limiting distractions that might keep them up at night, such as checking emails or sitting in front of a Netflix box set.

The latest findings study looked at sleep patterns of around 100 male volunteers who were attending fertility clinics in Denmark, 48 of whom had healthy sperm and 56 with low-quality sperm.

Men who went to bed before 10.30pm were four times more likely to have healthy sperm than night owls who stayed up past 11.30pm.

They were 2.75 times more likely to have healthy sperm than men who went to bed at a “normal time” between half past 10 and half past 11.

Not getting enough sleep could be even more harmful, as the research suggests men who got less than seven hours sleep a night were as much as six times more likely to have poor sperm.

Sleep plays a key role in moderating hormones and stress levels that can affect fertility, and sleep deprivation stress can cause the immune system to overreact and attack sperm.

“These were men who had been trying to have a baby for about two years and an early bedtime was likely to be important because it allowed them to get more sleep,” said Professor Hans Jakob Ingerslev, co-author of the study from Aarhus University.

“The reasons could be psychological as sleep-deprived men suffer mores stress and that can have an impact on fertility.”

Professor Ingerslev and his colleagues also looked at overall sleep quality, but did not find a link between disrupted sleep – from getting up in the night to use the toilet, for example – and sperm quality.

The findings were presented as a poster at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in Vienna and have not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

However independent experts said they offered sound advice for men struggling to conceive.

“They should think about what is keeping them up and try to change their habits, whether it’s binge-watching Netflix or sending emails,” said Dr Raj Mathur, a consultant gynaecologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

“Going to bed earlier with their partner may also increase their opportunity for sex, improving their chances of success further.”

Politics › "You are inciting us to violence", Shiites tells Federal Government by References(op):
• Rejects Terrorist Label, To Respond Later
• Our Members, Dying In Police Custody – Spokesman
• We’ll Continue Marching Till We Get Justice – Katsina

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), known as the Shiites organisation, has blamed the Federal Government’s failure to obey the court order for their endless protests and face-off with security agencies, often leading to a breakdown of law and order, and loss of lives.

In a judgment on Friday, Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the proscription of the Shiites movement
The court restrained “any person or group of persons” from participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the IMN “under the name or platform” in Nigeria.

But Sheikh Yaqoub Yahaya Katsina, who represents Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, restated the group’s resolve to keep marching on the streets and seeking justice for its leader so long as the government remained recalcitrant.

In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Katsina stressed that those in authority derived their power from the laws of the land and that every country thrives when those laws were obeyed.

Katsina’s declaration came as the group raised the alarm that three of its members who were arrested and detained after the recent protest in Abuja had died in Police custody. They were being held at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement by the IMN spokesman, Mallam Ibrahim Musa, he said the victims died on Wednesday because of bullet wounds sustained during the ‘free Zakzaky protest’ earlier in the week. He called on the Police to release the bodies for burial according to Islamic rites.

Reacting on how to broker peace, Katsina stated that the solution to the crises lay in following rules. “The House of Representatives advised that our leader should be released. A Federal High Court has ruled in favour of our leader, Sheikh Zakzaky. Human rights bodies and activists have made the same call that our leader should be freed. Why has the President Muhammadu Buhari administration refused to heed these calls?

"Even the Kaduna State judicial commission of inquiry into the Zaria genocide said the military should be probed and those found culpable prosecuted. But to date, nothing has been done. One can then safely say it is a government that is asking us to come out on the streets, due to its stubbornness and refusal to obey the law,” he said.

Katsina bemoaned a situation where members of the group had always been the victims in confrontations with successive governments.

“We don’t cast the first stone. We don’t fight governments. It is the other way round. For one reason or the other, governments choose to fight us. Even in the case of the Zaria massacre, initially what government said led to the killings was a road blockade, allegedly made by our supporters. Let’s assume it is true, did government security agencies act according to the law of the land? They didn’t. Rather, they chose to exterminate us, which was wrong,” he recalled.

Katsina dismissed insinuations that Shiites members were almost always unruly and never willing to subject to civil authority.

He said the group believed in the necessity of having a government, which is why its members participate in all government activities, pay taxes and go to court to demand rights.

“If we don’t believe in government, why should we go to court? Our children go to government schools, and we go to government hospitals. Anyone claiming we don’t believe in constituted authority is lying. When criminals are being identified in society, you hardly find any of them in the Shia community. We are law-abiding citizens,” Katsina said.

Following the alleged death of some of its members in police custody, the group has expressed fears that, “more (of its members) might die in police custody because there are at least 15 people who are in the detention centre with various degrees of bullet wounds and without medication; among them women and a minor who had his leg shot.”

The groups’ spokesman, Musa said all pleas made by relatives of the detainees to the police authorities to allow them to have medication had been rebuffed.

He said: “It is unfortunate that when it comes to dealing with the Shiites, the security agencies throw all known laws and conventions to the dogs, and indulge in savagery as exhibited when the police on Wednesday dumped a Muslim brother of the Islamic Movement by the roadside after torturing him and pouring hot water over him.

“We are calling on the International Community and Human Rights Activists and organisations to have a look at the inhumanity taking place at the dreaded headquarters of SARS, where unarmed citizens are kept in dehumanising conditions.”

Politics › Ozekhome: FG's Proscription Of IMN's Activities: Illegal, Unconstitutional by References(op): 6:17pm On Jul 27, 2019
Constitutional lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN has said that the proscription of the Shii’tes religious group by the federal government is illegal and unconstitutional.

Speaking with Vanguard, Ozekhome said that the action of the government through the court was highly discriminatory.

He said, “The proscription by the government of the Shii’tes religious group is highly discriminatory, unconstitutional, as was the case of IPOB. What group could be more terrorist than the Herdsmen and their known anchor, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association that has held Nigeria down by the jugular for years killing, maiming, burning, raping, turning Nigeria into a crimson field of bloodbath?

“Until the government bans and outlaws these, it is certainly not serious. They are demanding for the release of their leader still kept in government dungeon in spite of several Court orders.

“The Shii’te group is a religious group, like the President’s Sunni group. It is not an Association that could be banned. Section 10 of the Nigerian Constitution makes Nigeria a secular State. you can’t ban religion, a people’s belief.

“There is also freedom of thought, conscience and religion in section 38, while sections 40 and 41 allow for freedom of movement and Association. The Constitution is ruthlessly being shredded by an intolerant and overbearing civilian dictatorship.’

Politics › Certificate Scandal: Adamawa State Director Embroiled In Forged Documents - SR by References(op): 12:51pm On Jul 27, 2019
Halilu Abba, a director of administration at Adamawa State Health Services Management Board, did not study for a master's degree at the Adamawa State University (ADSU).

Instead, Abba forged ADSU's Masters in Public Administration (MPA) to earn him his present position, SaharaReporters can report.

The board coordinates all secondary-level hospitals in the state and health institutions, including College of Health Technology and College of Nursing and Midwifery.

The board is also responsible for the recruitment of doctors, nurses and all other health processionals.

Abba, who doubles as the ward head of Karewa, a highbrow neighbourhood, reserved for the top echelons of the state's civil service, parades a purported MPA from ADSU.

But the university has denied awarding him the degree, following a petition to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) on the forged MPA.

According to his official credentials which SaharaReporters obtained, the purported MPA, signed by one Ishaku Abubakar, a deputy registrar of ADSU, was awarded on June 4, 2013.

Abba obtained a statement of results of the MPA, submitted same to health board and was promoted to grade level 16 and subsequently appointed a director.

A first degree or a postgraduate diploma (PGD) is the minimum requirement for promotion to directorate cadre as enshrined in the scheme of service for civil servants in Adamawa.

The position of the law is that both the criminal and penal codes that apply in the southern and northern parts of Nigeria prohibit forgery.

Section 463 of the criminal code, provides for three years imprisonment for forgery while sections 362 to 364 of the penal code deals with forgery with the punishment of up to 14 years imprisonment with an option of fine or both.

HOW ABBA GOT INTO TROUBLE

Going by his date of birth, (September 2, 1969), Abba started his civil service career at the age of 18 on January 13, 1988 as a laboratory attendant. He was upgraded to assistant executive on January 1, 1991 (being a public holiday though), after presenting a certificate in Personnel Administration from Adamawa Polytechnic.

He later rose to become executive officer in 1993 after bagging a diploma in Public Administration from his alma mater.

Trouble started when a report by the Establishment Committee, recommending Abba for promotion to level 16, thus qualifying for the post of director of administration, was released. The report showed that Abba obtained a PGD at an undisclosed institution in 2011, as well as MPA from ADSU in 2013.

This explains why six years after he purportedly obtained the MPA, Abba could not produce the original certificate of the degree.

Following the committee's recommendation, Abba was made a director, preferred over two officers who have m'ster's degrees, as well as his seniors in the service.

SaharaReporters' findings revealed that the two officers first raised the alarm questioning not just the impropriety of his rapid promotion, but also his academic qualifications

The duo's outcry was ignored.

In addition to this, Abba, according to some staffs, betrayed illiteracy, by allegedly hiring someone to help to write minutes and treat official files.

"I can swear to you that our director of admin cannot write the simplest of all sentences," a staff who spoke on the condition of anonymity said.

ICPC STEPPED IN

ICPC was at this point petitioned to investigate, particularly the MPA Abbo parades.

Meanwhile, the state university has denied outright that it awarded the certificate to Abba.

However, the university acknowledged that the only document linked to Abba's name in its records is a 2012 admission letter to study for MPA.

Travel › Sirika: Enugu Airport is dangerous, unfit for usage - ex-Aviation Minister by References(op): 8:22pm On Jul 26, 2019
Immediate-past Minister of State, for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, has warned against the continuous usage of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, over the deplorable state of the runway.

Sirika served between November 2016 and May 2019 as Minister in charge of Aviation. He was re-nominated on Tuesday by President Muhammadu Buhari. He was screened today by the Senate.

Minority Leader of the Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe, had while speaking on the floor of the Senate, urged Sirika to fix Akanu Ibiam Airport if he’s reassigned to the Aviation sector.

Addressing Senate correspondents after his screening, he said the runaway needed immediate attention and should be closed down without delay.

He said in his personal capacity, he would advise that the airport should be shutdown without delay. Like other geopolitical zones, he said the South East deserves something better.

He said: “If you ask me I will close the Enugu airport today because the runway needs to be fixed. That’s my personal opinion. I am very jealous of that city and the airport.”

Speaking on a possible national carrier, Sirika told newsmen that it would be good for the country. He said considering the population of Nigeria, having a national carrier would yield more profits for the country.

He said: “I believe having a very vibrant private sector-led national carrier is good for the economy of Nigeria. It is good for the population of Nigeria. It’s good for the centrality of Nigeria. It is good for the wealth and fortune of Nigeria.

“One aeroplane in Nigeria is equal to 300 direct jobs to start with. The relationship between GDP and air transportation is direct and we have the biggest GDP in Africa.

“By United States estimation, we are a trillion dollar GDP. By official figures of the NBS, we are half a trillion dollar GDP. We might be hitting more than $1.5 trillion GDP. We are 200 million people that will grow to more than 400 million people in 2030.”

Travel › Abuja Airport Flooded, Flights To Nation's Capital Cancelled (Video) by References(op):
The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, is currently flooded.

The flood has affected the front stretch of the arrival and departure area.

This followed a heavy downpour at the nation’s capital Thursday morning.

DAILY POST gathered that all morning flights to Abuja from most of the nation’s airports have been cancelled due to bad weather.

It is unclear if the latest development would cause the government to carry out design adjustment to forestall flood at the facility.

It would be recalled that in 2018, the Federal Government approved extra $490 million for the construction of new international terminal.

President Muhammadu Buhari launched the terminal last December.

Sports › Super Eagles Begin Search For New Goalkeepers by References(op): 6:17am On Jul 25, 2019
Super Eagles Goalkeeper Coach, Alloy Agu has revealed that there are efforts to bring in new goalkeepers by scouting “both home and abroad” to bolster the team, reports footballlive.ng.

Addressing questions on Nigeria’s challenge with finding a formidable goaltender since the exit of Carl Ikeme and the inconsistency with the three goalkeepers selected for the AFCON 2019, Agu said: “A lot of things have been said about that department and that department has also lived up to expectations.

Before I took up the job of the Super Eagles, Enyeama was the fourth choice goalkeeper of the team,” Agu said.

“Enyeama became the first choice under my watch. He has a record since the inception of our World Cup campaign that none after him has been able to break until date.

“When Enyeama left the show, I brought in Carl Ikeme. Ikeme did so well for Nigeria that goalkeeping position was solidified until he fell sick, and I had to bring in the same Daniel Akpeyi.

“At one time we played against Algeria in the World Cup qualifiers, the same Akpeyi rescued us and we beat the Algerian team that was number one in Africa at the time.

“So, this is the situation, now we’re working and I can tell you categorically that I have embarked with the scouting team on a search within and outside Nigeria to make sure that we get reliable hands that can solidify that goalkeeping position in the Super Eagles.”

On the goal that sunk Nigeria at the semifinals of the just concluded African Cup of Nations, Agu said it would be “consciously” brought to the goalkeepers’ awareness on how best to take charge in free-kick situations.

With the score tied at 1-1, Akpeyi was beaten by Riyad Mahrez, the goalkeeper was standing behind the wall, gifting the Algerian dead-ball specialist a lot of room to pick his spot and curl it past the wall.

That error shouldn’t have happened and Agu is determined to eliminate the chances of that embarrassment reoccurring.

“In the near future when we have that kind of situation, what we need to do as we continue to advance is that you form your wall and ensure you’re in contact with the ball.

“Also you take your action the moment the ball is kicked, then you react because you can see where the ball is headed." He said.

Sports › Russian Boxer, Maxim Dadashev Dies After Fight by References(op): 10:09pm On Jul 23, 2019
Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev has died from brain injuries sustained in a fight in Maryland, the Russian boxing federation announced on Tuesday.
“Maxim Dadashev has died in the United States following injuries sustained during his fight with Subriel Matias,” the federation said in a statement.

The 28-year-old underwent emergency brain surgery in Washington after his super-lightweight bout with Puerto Rican Matias on Friday was stopped after the 11th round by his cornerman James “Buddy” McGirt.

Dadashev, known as “Mad Max”, was unable to walk to the dressing room and was immediately hospitalised.

Doctors operated to relieve pressure from swelling on his brain.

McGirt, who said after the fight he “couldn’t convince” his fighter to stop but opted to throw in the towel when he saw him “getting hit with more and more clean shots as the fight went on,” told ESPN on Tuesday he was wracking his brain wondering if he could have done things differently.

“It just makes you realize what type of sport we’re in, man,” McGirt told ESPN — which streamed the fight on its ESPN+ platform.

“He did everything right in training, no problems, no nothing. My mind is like really running crazy, right now. Like what could I have done differently? But at the end of the day, everything was fine (in training).

“He seemed OK, he was ready, but it’s the sport that we’re in. It just takes one punch, man.”

Russian boxing chief Umar Kremlev told Russian media that Dadashev’s body would be repatriated home and that his family would receive financial aid.

Dadashev’s widow, Elizaveta Apushkina, also issued a statement, confirming the fighter’s death “with great sadness.

“He was a very kind person who fought until the very end. Our son will continue be raised to be a great man like his father,” she said of the St. Petersburg-born fighter who trained in Oxnard, California.

Dadashev took an unbeaten 13-0 record into the 140-pound non-title fight.

Dadashev, whose manager Egis Klimas also handles Vasiliy Lomachenko and Sergey Kovalev, turned pro in April of 2016 and relocated to Southern California to pursue his ring ambitions, eventually signing with promoters Top Rank.

Top Rank chairman Bob Arum issued a statement recalling Dadashev as “a terrific young man.”

ESPN, which streamed the bout on ESPN+, also issued a statement.

“Our heartfelt thoughts are with Dadashev’s family, friends, trainers and the team at Top Rank,” the statement said.

Dadashev was rated in the top five by two world sanctioning organizations going into Friday’s fight in suburban Washington DC, an elimination bout for the right to become mandatory challenger for Josh Taylor’s IBF title.

Matias dominated, and after the 11th round McGirt could be heard telling Dadashev “I’m going to stop it, Max,” even as Dadashev shook his head.McGirt, himself a former two-weight world champion, then told the referee: “That’s it.”

Politics › We Are Not Responsible For DCP Usman Musa's Death - Shiites by References(op): 11:30am On Jul 23, 2019
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (aka Shiites) has absolved itself of the murder of the Deputy commissioner of Police in charge of operations in the FCT, DCP Usman Musa, saying that he may have been a victim of “friendly fire”.

DCP Umar, a Channels TV reporter and several other members of the IMN died during a protest by the IMN on Monday that turned violent.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, the spokesman of the IMN, Ibrahim Musa reiterated that members of the movement do not carry weapons so they could not have been responsible for the senior policeman’s death.

According to him, several members of the movement died during the protest as a result of the violence unleashed on them by security agents.

He said “a quick analysis of images and video clips showed that the Free Zakzaky procession was peacefully progressing prior to the brutal crackdown. It also clearly showed that the protesters weren’t bearing arms and traffic was moving smoothly without hindrance.

“The images also showed the police, armed to the teeth, intent in stopping the movement of the protesters. Few other policemen and plain cloth security agents were seen piling used tyres for use to set bonfires. By the time the police struck, about a dozen members of the Islamic Movement had been killed. The police were seen picking the corpses to an undisclosed location, perhaps for mass burial.

“Also shot were a journalist with the Channels TV and their colleague, an Deputy Commissioner of Police, whom photographs showed was struck from the back of his head with the bullet exit in front, an indication that he was a victim of “friendly fire.”

Politics › FG withdrew my anti-corruption case to save self from embarrassment - Goje by References(op): 4:21pm On Jul 18, 2019
Senator Danjuma Goje has described his recent battle with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged misappropriation of funds as “persecution”.

According to Goje, the case against him was withdrawn by the Federal Government to save itself from embarrassment.

He said the case assumed the posture of persecution rather than a prosecution by the anti-graft agency, as he decried the recent outcry that greeted the withdrawal of an anti-corruption case against him by the Federal Government.

Speaking through his lawyer, Mr Paul Erokoro, Goje said it was strange that he was prosecuted for taking bank loans on behalf of his state, Gombe, when he was Governor.

“The two counts of the charge that were withdrawn by the Attorney-General were an embarrassing triviality. The charges had become more of persecution than prosecution,” he said.

“It was, therefore, no surprise to those familiar with the case when the Attorney-General of the Federation withdrew those ridiculous charges. The Attorney-General did the right thing and should be commended for saving the face and the resources of the government, by terminating the futile proceedings.”

Speaking extensively on the outcry regarding the withdrawn case, Goje stated:

“Following a spate of inaccurate and untrue reports in the media on the withdrawal of criminal charges against Sen. Danjuma Goje, it has become necessary for the correct facts to be publicly stated, to avoid genuine misunderstanding by well-meaning commentators and also expose the malicious insinuations of mischief makers.

“First of all, the so-called “N25 billion fraud” that has been bandied about in the media, never featured in the case. The sum total of all the monies mentioned in the charge was about N8 billion.

“Of that total, N5 billion was a loan taken from Access Bank for completion of infrastructural projects such as the Gombe airport, waterworks, numerous roads, Gombe Jewel Hotels, schools, hospitals and rural electrification. The bank testified in Court that the money was properly utilized for the projects. The EFCC investigators also confirmed to the Court that the projects were all completed.

“On the N1 billion agricultural loan, the Central Bank testified in Court that the loan was utilised in full compliance with the bank’s loan conditions.

“Other witnesses told the Court that the Governor never awarded any contract for the supply of food to Government House and Government Guest Houses during his tenure for the N1 billion alleged in the charge or for any other sum.

“The 19 counts of the Charge that were framed around the above monetary issues collapsed during the trial. The prosecution’s own witnesses completely exonerated the defendants. It was this reason that the 19 counts were all dismissed by the court, on the No Case submission.

“The two remaining counts challenged the Governor’s power to approve the recommendation of the Commissioner of Finance that the old, unserviceable buses of Gombe Line, be sold to the public, following the purchase of new ones.

“As every adult in Nigeria knows, the sale of unserviceable vehicles is a routine exercise periodically undertaken by the government and even by private organisations. This is the first time that the authority of a governor to approve such a sale has been made the subject of a criminal charge.”

Politics › New Minimum Wage: Labour tells workers to prepare for strike by References(op): 8:23am On Jul 17, 2019
The organised Labour has directed its members in all the 36 states and Abuja to get ready for a total showdown with government should the negotiation on the adjustment from the new national minimum wage break down.

On its part, the government side is insisting on 9.5 percent salary adjustment for officers on grade levels 07-14 and 5 percent for those on grade levels 15-17.

The workers expressed concern that rather than presenting the two positions to technical subcommittee as agreed, but “Surprisingly, when the Technical Sub-Committee reconvened, the Government Side introduced a strange clause to the discussion insisting that the Term of Reference of the Committee was to work out the consequential adjustment of salaries of Public Servants based on the subhead provided for salaries in the 2019 Budget.”

All efforts by the Trade Union Side to persuade the Government Side to return to the right track of negotiation and agree on a realistic percentage increase proved abortive.”

"Thus, the Government Side deliberately created a stalemate and thereafter adjoined the meeting of the Technical Committee sine die.”

According to a communiqué, a copy of which was issued to newsmen, the workers said the downward review by labour was due to a promise by government to undertake a general salary review in no distance time.

The communiqué was jointly signed by the acting chairman and Secretary, Comrades Anchaver Simon and Alade Bashir Lawal.

The communiqué reads in part, “The Trade Union Side of JNPSNC has now resolved that the Federal Government should reconvene the meeting of the Technical Committee on Consequential Adjustment immediately so that it can conclude its deliberations and ensure that all Public Service Employees benefit adequately from the N30,000 new monthly National Minimum Wage signed into Law by Mr. President since April, 2019.”

He prayed God to grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Alhaji Abdulhadi Khaliel, Head, Administration and Human Resources Management (A/HRM), who also reacted to Okoro’s death described it as “devastating and painful”.

“We shall miss his team spirit and deep commitment to duty. His sudden exit is shocking to all of us. We pray God to comfort the family,” he said.

The agency’s Assistant Director A/HRM), Mr Moses Uzoagba, also described Okoro’s death as “a personal loss to me”.

“Okoro, apart from being a colleague, was my personal friend. We have been together for years and I will greatly miss him,” he said.

Another staff, Mr Livinus Ugochukwu, said that Okoro was a personal friend whose death had hit him like a thunderbolt.

“The news shocked me to my marrows; I am particularly sad because his children are still very young,” he said.

Mrs. Kemi Olumorin, who worked with Okoro in the office, described him as “a transparent boss that was always ready to listen to his subordinates”.

“He was approachable; he had a listening ear and was a good boss. He was a very considerate leader and could feel your pains,” she said. (NAN)
