Business › Re: Power Sector Loses N108bn Revenue between January to March, 2019 - This Day by References(op): 12:55pm On Mar 18, 2019
So, we still hover around transmitting about 4000MW......Fashola, what's the problem?

That means if we continue in this tempo... by the end of 2019, we will be losing about 0.432trillion naira.....how much is our budget then?
Business › Power Sector Loses N108bn Revenue between January to March, 2019 - This Day by References(op): 12:52pm On Mar 18, 2019
Nigeria’s power sector has lost N108.652 billion revenue between January and March due to various constraints, representing an increase of about N10.924 billion or 11.17 per cent from the revenue lost during the same period in 2018, according to the operational data obtained from the Office of the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The statistics from the Advisory Power Team (APT) in Osinbajo’s office also stated that about 2,978 megawatts (MW) of electricity have not been able to get to the national grid within the period under consideration because of challenges of gas supply to generation companies (Gencos) as well as unavailability of transmission and distribution infrastructure.

The report, however, explained that the average constrained megawatts was higher than the 2,597MW recorded during the same period in 2018, while average supply to the grid within the periods were 4,062MW for 2019 and 3,875MW for 2018.

According to the report, 53,043 metric million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of gas has so far been supplied to Gencos for power production in 2019.

This was also lower than the 54,480mmscf of gas that was sent to Gencos within the same period in 2018.

Disclosing the activities of the sector on a daily basis in 2019, the report stated for instance that: “On March 09, 2019, average energy sent out was 4,181MW (down by 28.25MW from the previous day). 2,295.5MW was not generated due to unavailability of gas. 33.8MW was not generated due to unavailability of transmission infrastructure, while 1,226MW was not generated due to high frequency resulting from unavailability of distribution infrastructure.”

“The power sector lost an estimated N1,707,000,000 on March 09,2019 due to insufficient gas supply, distribution infrastructure and transmission infrastructure.

“The dominant constraint on March 09, 2019 remained unavailability of gas – constraining a total of 2,295.5MW from being available on the grid. Estimated amount lost to insufficient gas supply, distribution, transmission and water reserves to date in 2019 – N100,106,000,000 (One hundred billion one hundred and six million naira only),” it added.

Similarly for the previous day, it reported that: “On March 08, 2019, average energy sent out was 4,210MW (up by 31.33MW from the previous day). 2,472MW was not generated due to unavailability of gas. 33.8MW was not generated due to unavailability of transmission infrastructure, while 852.4MW was not generated due to high frequency resulting from unavailability of distribution infrastructure.

“The power sector lost an estimated N1,612,000,000 (One billion six hundred and twelve million naira) on March 08, 2019 due to insufficient gas supply, distribution infrastructure and transmission infrastructure.

“The dominant constraint on March 08, 2019 remained unavailability of gas – constraining a total of 2,472MW from being available on the grid.”

Further, it stated that the sector on March 10, had an average power output of 4,021MW, but could not generate 2,774.05MW due to unavailability of gas; 34.7MW due to unavailability of transmission infrastructure, and lost an estimated N1.348 billion.

On March 11, it explained that 4,114MW was generated while 2,793.58MW; 176MW and 168.6MW were not due to gas supply, transmission and distribution challenges, with the revenue loss for the day estimated at N1.506 billion.

For March 12, 4,442MW was generated but not 2,512.5MW; 31MW; and 440MW due to gas, transmission and distribution constraints. N1.432 billion was estimated to have been lost on that day to these constraints.

The trend continued on March 13, when 4,438MW – down by 4.82MW, was generated and 1,818MW; 42.7MW and 1,497MW could not be generated due to gas, transmission and high frequency issues. Estimated loss for the day was N1.612 billion.

“On March 14, 2019, average energy sent out was 4,141MWH/Hour (down by 296.63 MWH/Hour from the previous day). 1,776MW was not generated due to unavailability of gas.32.4MW was not generated due to unavailability of transmission infrastructure, while 863.5MW was not generated due to high frequency resulting from unavailability of distribution infrastructure. The power sector lost an estimated N1,283,000,000 on March 14, 2019 due to insufficient gas supply, distribution infrastructure and transmission infrastructure.

“On March 15, 2019, average energy sent out was 4,427 MWH/Hour (up by 286.34 MWH/Hour from the previous day). 1,797.52MW was not generated due to unavailability of gas. 32.6MW was not generated due to unavailability of transmission infrastructure, while 1,013.5MW was not generated due to high frequency resulting from unavailability of distribution infrastructure. The power sector lost an estimated N1,365,000,000 on March 15, 2019 due to insufficient gas supply, distribution infrastructure and transmission infrastructure,” added the statistics.

Politics › Group Petitions NEMA Over Food Crisis In Adamawa, Taraba IDP Camps by References(op): 12:31pm On Mar 17, 2019
The Center For Peace Education and Community Development (CEPEACECODE), a non governmental organization based in Jalingo, has petitioned the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) over reportedly neglecting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Taraba and Adamawa states.

In a petition signed by the convener of CEPEACECODE, Dr Joseph Gimba, and addressed to the Director General of NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja, Gimba alleges that the IDPs in Taraba have not received any support from NEMA for a long time, while those in Adamawa last received food items about two months ago, and have not received non food items for several months.

Gimba urged the DG to take urgent steps to address the challenges of the IDPs in line with the mandate of NEMA for the sake of humanity.

“After a trip to the locations of IDPs in Taraba and Adamawa states and an interview with the relevant leaderships of the IDPs and some of the IDPs, we discovered that NEMA is deliberately neglecting IDPs largely due to bureaucratic bottlenecks and lack of concern for their wellbeing. A look at the NEMA warehouse speaks volumes on this neglect and lack of regular approval being given to the zonal office to supply food and non food items to IDPs,” Gimba stated.

“That for the past two years, your agency did not distribute non food items like slippers, mattresses, blankets, etc, to IDPs in Yola, while you have not distributed food items for the past two months.

“In Taraba, the IDPs have been neglected for so long that one wonders if NEMA even exists. Though NEMA is in charge of these camps, all necessary actions as contained in the mission of NEMA have been lacking in recent times.

“Based on our findings and interview with the leadership of the IDPs, we write to your good office to take immediate action on the above actionable areas for the sake of humanity within a reasonable time.
Our organization will be left with no option but to organise civic action to drum this inhuman neglect.”

Daily Sun reports that IDPs in Jalingo recently alleged that they are dying of starvation, with some children in the camps suffering from acute malnutrition.

Family › Lawyers Advise Women To Drop Maiden Name After Marriage by References(op): 12:25am On Mar 16, 2019
Why women shouldn’t use maiden name after marriage —Lawyers

Some lawyers in Lagos on Friday argued that, under the Marriage Act, there is no provision for a married woman to bear her maiden name.

They suggested the need for women to change their surnames after marriage, warning that retention of maiden name could lead to misunderstanding or divorce.

The lawyers spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria against the backdrop of the claim by some people that maiden name should continue to form a part of a woman’s record as it helps to shape her career.

While some lawyers said that a woman could join her maiden name with that of her husband to form a compound name if her husband permits, others advised that maiden names should be dropped altogether immediately after marriage.

They argued that since marriage is a change of status, it also implies acquisition of a new name.

One of the lawyers who spoke to NAN, Mr. Ayotunde Ologe, noted that there were legal presumptions that a woman would need to execute a change of name after marriage.

“Women must have noticed that, in most forms they fill, they come across a column for maiden name. This simply means father’s name before marriage.

“This, alone, presupposes the fact that there needs to be a change of name and the name change is to reflect the fact that a woman is now married to someone.

“However, if it is permitted by the husband for his wife to continue with her maiden name after marriage, then that may suffice; but where the husband feels strongly about it, then the best approach is for the woman to stick strictly to her husband’s name,’’ he said.

On whether children should bear their father’s name or their grandfather’s, the lawyer said that it was logical for children to bear the name of their own father.

“Why will my own son want to bear the name of his grandfather? Surname is your father’s name; so, it is very abnormal for a son to quote his grandfather’s name,” he argued.

Mrs. Funmibi Adeosun, also a lawyer, advised that change of name should be discussed and resolved before marriage.

She said that lack of adequate communication between spouses contributes much to misunderstanding and divorce.

“In Africa, a woman is meant to assume her husband’s name after marriage. However, there should be no problem in retaining your father’s name if it is allowed by your husband,” she said.

“I’m a Christian and it is biblical for a woman to be submissive to her husband; it is important for a woman to submit to the opinion of the man in this regard.

“However, where the husband consents to the wife keeping her father’s name along with his own name, then that can be permissible.

“It is, however, sad to note that things as little as this can cause problems in the home due to the absence of communication,” she said.

Mr. Chukwu Agwu, also a Lagos-based lawyer, described retention of maiden name by a woman as “a show of ego.”

He added that joining maiden name with husband’s name is unnecessary.

“If my daughter is married and I join in signing the marriage register, why should I insist on her retaining my name? It is absolutely unnecessary.

“The Bible does not say a woman should carry her home to another home; so, why carry your father’s name to your husband’s house?

“Under the marriage Act, there is no requirement for maiden name and there is also no law which permits the children to use their mother’s maiden name,” he said.

According to Agwu, issues such as a woman’s insistence on the use of her maiden name are responsible for misunderstandings in marriages.

Health › Akwa Ibom Ranks Highest In HIV/AIDS Prevalence Rate In Nigeria by References(op): 8:15pm On Mar 15, 2019
The Nigerian HIV/AIDs Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) has shown that Akwa Ibom has the highest prevalence rate of HIV in the country.

The result indicates that about 5.5 per cent of the people living with HIV in Nigeria are in Akwa Ibom State, followed by Benue State, which has about 5.3 per cent prevalence rate.

It also states that while the North-West has the lowest prevalence rate at 0.6 per cent, the South-South geopolitical zone has the highest with 3.1 per cent.
Speaking during the announcement of the NAIIS result on Thursday, the Director General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDs (NACA), Sani Aliyu, said about 1.9 million Nigerians are currently living with HIV.

The event was held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja.
He said the percentage of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in Nigeria, among the age group of 15-49 years, is 1.4 per cent (1.9 per cent among females and 0.9 per cent among males.)

In his response to the prevalence rate in the state, the minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, said this is not the time to start blaming states.
“For the south-south, (it) is Akwa-Ibom that has the highest prevalence, and, for the North Central, it is still Benue State.

“But then we should also look at the quality of interventions we have had. Benue has one of the largest interventions programme in the country, so that is also expected to yield results.

“It would have been frustrating if with those interventions, we now have 10 per cent in Benue.” he said.

He noted that he was quite happy about the downward trend in Benue State.
In his goodwill message, David Young, Charge de Affairs, Embassy of the United States of America, said “Beyond the data, the survey has proved the capacity of Nigerians working together in solidarity with one another to rise and resolve challenges regarding the health and well being of their brothers and sisters.

“The US government is proud to support Nigeria in conducting the NAIIS survey,” he said.

The Country Director, Center for Disease Control Nigeria (CDC), Mahesh Swaminathan said the results will help the government improve it efforts in the fight against the virus.

“The encouraging results presented today, along with ongoing monitoring and evaluation data will help the Government of Nigeria to intensify efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDs to achieve epidemic control.

“CDC will continue to work alongside our Nigerian brothers and sisters in this fight.” he said.

Business › Juventus Shares Soar After Ronaldo Rescues Champions League by References(op):
Juventus shares soared by over 20% on the Milan stock exchange on Wednesday, the morning after Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredible hat-trick rescued the Italian giants Champions League campaign.

The Portuguese superstar added a late penalty to a pair of headers for a 3-0 win on the night and 3-2 on aggregate over Atletico Madrid to seal a place in the quarter-finals.

The Turin club’s shares jumped by 23% after the Milan stock exchange opened before dipping to 17.09% later in the morning.

In 90 minutes the five-time Ballon d’Or winner demonstrated why Juventus splashed out 100 million euros ($117 million) last summer to bring the Real Madrid star to Italy, in addition to his annual salary of 31 million euros.

“That’s why Juventus bought me, to help them in games like this,” the 34-year-old Ronaldo said after the game.

The seven-time reigning Italian title-holders have not won the Champions League since 1996, and have finished runners-up twice in the past four seasons.

Politics › Uduaghan speaks on death of INEC officials, security operatives In Delta River by References(op): 6:41pm On Mar 12, 2019
The Delta boat mishap was reported here:
https://www.nairaland.com/5070883/12-missing-boat-conveying-inec#76523489

May the souls of the departed find eternal rest, Amen.

The immediate past governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan, has described as “unfortunate” the death of the three passengers who drowned in the Benin River in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.

DAILY POST reports that a speed boat last weekend capsized along the Ebrohimi Creek, leaving ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and Security Operatives dead.

Uduaghan, who was the Delta South Senatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in a statement said, “A boat carrying 23 passengers, including the driver had capsized around Ebrohimi waterway after colliding with a fishing boat along the Benin River, while heading for Koko on Saturday night.

“Frantic efforts were made to see all passengers on board were rescued alive but three persons, who were earlier been declared missing, were later found dead in the creeks of Warri North where the incident took place. This is highly unfortunate.

Uduaghan, who was saddened by the incident, stressed that, “the deceased persons, paid the supreme price for the nation’s democracy by travelling home to their various polling units to cast their votes for the candidates of their choice in the March 9 Governorship and State Houses of Assembly election.”

The former governor stated that more casualties would have been recorded from the incident if not for the quick intervention by various persons to rescue the victims.

Uduaghan posited that despite the difficult terrain where voters had to travel through water to their polling units located in the riverine areas, electorate in the Warri North travelled back home in an orderly manner to ensure that votes count during election period.

According to Uduaghan, “Our beloved three brothers died In their quest in ensuring that the votes of our people in the riverine area count in the March 9 election.

“This is to tell Nigerians the risk our people particularly in Delta South most often go through during electioneering period to vote for the candidate of their choice. I commiserate with the family of the deceased and the people of Warri North”.

Uduaghan also sympathised with victims who are still receiving treatment at various hospitals in the locality from injuries sustained during the boat accident, and wish them speedy recovery.

Politics › Bauchi Guber Poll:Dogara Blows Hot Over Inconclusive Elections, Warns INEC Chair by References(op): 7:44pm On Mar 11, 2019
Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has condemned the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to cancel the Tafawa Balewa local government governorship election results in Bauchi state.

Dogara, speaking during a media briefing on Monday in Bauchi, said the decision to cancel Tafawa Balewa LGA by INEC was against the provision of the law.

According to him, the decision lacks substance as elections in the state was “conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner”.

The speaker further called out INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu to rise up from his seat in Abuja and defend his people.

Dogara said: “There was no problem at all in Tafawa Balewa. The only problem they had was the final collation. If that was the only problem, one will think that the worse decision that can be taken is for them to provide the relevant collation sheet to her (collation officer) and say go and complete the collation and bring it in the proper sheet.

“But in law, anybody who is a lawyer knows that the issue of form does not defeat the issue of substance

“Now, the substance is that there was a fair, free and credible election, which nobody is challenging. The only issue is that it wasn’t conveyed in the proper form and that can be cured and so, as it is, this election has been won and lost, no matter how you look at it and the PDP, Kauran Bauchi is, by the grace of God, the sitting governor-elect.

“As it is now, there is no problem, absolutely no problem with the votes from Tafawa Balewa.

“The chairman of INEC has told the world that elections begin and end at the unit. If they had cancelled any result at the level of unit collation or ward collation, it would have stood cancelled but for there to be peaceful elections, free and fair as attested to by the local government returning officer, Mrs Dominica Anosike, for there to be very peaceful, transparent collation of all the results across the eleven wards in Tafawa Balewa and the only challenge we had was that the Governor’s thugs and boys went and invaded the local government collation centre and carted away some result sheets.

“Thereafter, the returning officer who collated it on a separate paper, and then wrote a letter, an explanatory memoranda to the state returning officer and the Resident Electoral Commissioner to say that this was the situation in which they found themselves and that was why they had to use another result sheet to do the computation.

“If you look at it carefully, the thugs that invaded the collation centre in Tafawa Balewa are agents of the governor, the sitting governor of Bauchi State

“Their names were read out, it is not a rumour, they were apprehended by the army, including the vehicle they used for the operation and they have been handed over to the police.

“Now, if they were acting for a disclosed principal, which is the governor of Bauchi State, the point is that in the law of agency which we read and it hasn’t changed, the principal is responsible for the acts of his agents.

So, if they were acting as agents of the sitting governor, will the governor now take benefit of the crimes committed by his agents? That is one big question that INEC must answer.

“Secondly, I want to say that the chairman of INEC is a citizen of Bauchi State, just like all of us and they say that charity begins at home. Will he therefore sit down in Abuja and watch or preside over this brazen rape of the mandate of Bauchi State? Will he sit down and sleep in peace when he sees that the decision of his own people here in Bauchi State is being upturned by agents of the agency over which he superintends? That is the question that Professor Mahmood Yakubu, my namesake, will have to answer and the people of Bauchi State are watching.

“We want to see whether he will cast his vote with the people of Bauchi State or with those who are seeking to oppress the people of Bauchi State.”

Politics › Inconclusive Election: Tambuwal Rejects INEC's Decision, Heads To Court by References(op): 3:40pm On Mar 11, 2019
Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State has rejected the declaration of Sokoto Governorship polls as inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging it to declare him the winner of the election in the state.

The election was declared inconclusive by INEC as the number of votes cancelled was much higher than the winning margin.
Tambuwal, who contested on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was leading by 3,413, having scored 489,558 votes while Ahmed Aliyu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got 486,145 votes.

But the number of votes canceled from across 136 polling units in 22 local government areas was 75,403.

Addressing a press conference, Tambuwal said there was nothing like inconclusive election in the constitution.

“It is not founded in the constitution and there is a need for it to be tested in the court of law,” he said.

Tambuwal noted the need for the electoral body to reconsider its decision.

According to him, the constitution was explicit about the winner of the election, quoting section 179 (2) of the constitution.

“We will not allow anybody to subvert the mandate of our people. Every member of INEC has his name to protect,” he said.

At least, 16 persons have been reported killed in a fresh attack on Ungwan Barde in Kajuru Local Government of Kaduna State by gunmen in the early hours of Sunday.

This folowed the killing of a man identified as Danbuzu Nemi who was reportedly killed on Saturday as he went to his farm after voting on Saturday.

Trouble was said to have started when Nemi left for his farm shortly after voting on Saturday and did not return by evening of that day.

A source said when some members of the community noticed his absence, they decided to send a team of five persons to go and search for him.

The source said the team, on their way, met some armed men who asked them to go back, leading to an exchange between the two groups.

He said: “As the five persons, who were on bikes turned to go, they were given a hot chase by the armed men and in the process, four escaped but one of them fell and has not been seen since yesterday.”

Our correspondent learnt that the gunmen trailed the villagers to their community and attacked the village Sunday morning, killing 16 persons.

Jonah Luka Sarki, village head of Doka, when contacted, he said while the remains of the first missing person has been found, there was no trace of other person, who he identified as Danlami.

He said the area is however calm as there are security agents in the area.

The Kaduna State Government also confirmed the attack at Ungwan Barde community and extended its sympathy to the community and the families of the victims.

The statement by Samuel Aruwan, media assistant to the Kaduna governor, said the government was appealing for calm in the area and urging all communities to uphold peace.

He said: “Heads of security agencies in Kaduna State have informed Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of an attack on Ungwan Barde community by unknown bandits, today, 10th March 2019.

“The government condemns this violent attack and extends its sympathy to the families of the victims and the entire community.

“The security agencies have informed the governor that measures are being taken to contain the situation and to secure the general area. More troops have been deployed to the community, while the Nigerian Air Force personnel are carrying out aerial surveillance and reconnaissance.

“The security agencies will provide further updates. The Governor has also directed the State Emergency Management Agency to proceed to the community for immediate assessment and delivery of relief materials.

“The government appeals to all our communities to do their utmost for peace and harmony.”

No fewer than 10 ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been kidnapped in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State during the Saturday’s governorship and state Assembly elections.

THISDAY also gathered that a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer and police officer were killed during the attack.

Although the state Commissioner of Police Sanusi Buba is yet to respond to inquiries about the incident as of press time, the INEC Commissioner Jibril Ibrahim Zarewa said he will address journalists on the incidence by 7: 30 p.m. Saturday.

A reliable source at the state INEC office, who confirmed the development to THISDAY, said: “20 of our staff have been kidnapped in Danmusa during the election but 10 regained freedom. We also lost an NSCDC officer in Kankara.”

Similarly, reports from Danmusa Local Government indicated that gunmen numbering about 50 stormed polling units in the area and abducted many residents in the area, forcing the INEC staff to scamper for safety.

A source in the area said that gunmen attacked different polling units in the local government, adding that: “A police officer was killed during the attack.”

This development has generated panic among voters in Danmusa and Kankara Local Governments, which many sources in the areas said affected the governorship and state Assembly elections.

Danmusa and Kankara are among the nine frontline local government areas in Katsina, which shared border with Kaduna and Zamfara States.

The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of INEC, Jibril Ibrahim Zarewa, recently confirmed that the issue of insecurity in some parts of the state has escalated as a result of “spill-over” of the happenings in neighbouring Kaduna and Zamfara States.

“In all, we have concerns in nine LGAs namely, Jibia, Batsari, Kurfi, Safana, Kankara, Faskari, Dandume, Danmusa, and Sabuwa. The predominant problems are kidnapping, cattle rustling and robbery.

“The wards and number of polling units affected have been identified. Elections required peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. A concrete approach has therefore, become necessary in order to ensure peaceful and hitch-free election, and we believe that the security agencies are on top of the situation,” Zarewa had said.

Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, Zarewa and top security officers were at the Katsina Federal Medical Centre (FMC) to receive the corpse of the slain NSCDC officer.
