As big as Ijebu ode is, I can only vouch for two farms. They use broodstock weighing 8KG and above to hatch. I collect my fish from them. I can wait for a month or more for their fish. Their fingerlings is simply the best!
pls if I stay in Ibadan can I collect my seeds as far as from ijebo ode? What is d possibility of them surviving the stress of journey, since fishes are so fragile when discomforted away from their natural habitat? Thanks

Some useless hatchers also sell runts, years back I bought runts unknowingly from a hatcher, Not once or twice but later on I got to realise it and I lost heavily.. But today he is no longer in business.. One thing they don't realise is that when u keeping selling runts and the farmer keeps feeding and loosing he will surely go somewhere else and the hatcher tends to loose his customers gradually till he folds up.. I have even seen some hatchery presently using fishes of 0.5 grms both male and female for spawning..

Like I said earlier on u have to know the hatchery.. Go to their farms and see for urself... Also u have to still use ur discretion to still identify the runts.. I can identify runts just by looking at the fishes inside water maybe because I am into hatching..

A fish farmer contacted me some months back pleading just to see me..I gave him an appointment and when I met with him he complained bitterly about all he has gone through in fish farming.. I felt pity for him coz I could feel his pains.. Luckily for him I had done some hatching with first class shooters still intact, I gave him a thousand first class shooters for free and some tips on management...

5 months later when he harvested none of the fishes were below 1.5 kg he made profit for the first time since he started fish farming.. He brought the biggest fish of them all to my farm as appreciation...

I guess all these agents and hatchers that sells runts will be exposed with time..
amen bro. Pls can u give us hints on how to recognise runts at a glance or even under scrutiny. I'm worried about this runt problems. Thanks sir

The formular is 100KG. TS means Toasted Soya, DCP _ sorry I don't know d meaning but it is meant to make d fish agile and give them strong bone. The biscuit is the normal biscuit we eat but the one they use at the feedmill is the industrial one. I mean, waste from the factory but I see guys working at the feedmill eating it. For how long they will consume 100KG depends on ur fish eating habit
sir AB1X, what about the indomie in ur formula 2? Is it the packet one, or industrial waste too.

When they clock 8 weeks, you can change their water and use 10Kilo of salt to treat them.
are u saying salt can't be used when fishes are less than 8weeks? Also what's the quantity applicable in a plastic tank?

stocking runts is a very big mistake anyhow u look at it , u will loose , i advise that if u have were , u buy ur fingerlings or juvenile, always go there in advance to see the fishes when thy are fries. It doesent matter if u go to ur seller and see the fries sevral times before they become fingerllings or juvenile , u can even pay part payment so the hatchry can consider urs first, that way u get to get first shooters or second shooters and also u will have knowledge of the fishes if they are sick or fish thats doing well... and for those who already got runts i made this same mistake of stocking runts last year believe me its a bad story .but i actually made little profit . so for those who had runts now what i advice . mix any good fish growth powder booster with there food , when u buy lets say coopens 15kg a bag mix about 3 sarchet of any good fish booster in the feed, this means for 5kg feed, u add 1 sachet that sells for 300 naira and also when u change there water as in concrate , tarpaulin or plastic ponds ,buy also the liquid fish booster and mix with there water when changing the water . actualy runts are fish that lacks the esential vitamins, minerals and hormones that make them grow like the shooters or we say normal fish . so they need this boosters to replace the lost minerals and vitamins and it helps kick start there growth hormnones , i tried it and after a month my runts start to grow normal . and i did not run at a lost when i sold . Am not encouraging any one to buy runts but only ofering a solution incase u are missled to buy them, better to save ur capital than loose all. the best practice is to buy shooters from reputable hatchries .
.
I know this might sound funny, but how does a new farmer like me recognise a runt when I see one? Also how long does it take a fry to grow into fingerling and a fingerling to a juvenile. Precisely I want to know exactly when one can start suspecting if once fishes are runts in d process of growing. Thanks

Has anyone heard about A "KILO IS A KILO CAMPAIGN" in ibadan by young fish farmers who complain about how this market women price their fish??
I've waited impatiently to hear an elaborate detail on this issue. Pls I'm in Ibadan, and I'm a fresher who is yet to harvest my first crop of catfish. I've approached these mama elejas and d idea I've been given is that a kilo is for 430. Is this a good deal? Then d issue of a kilo is a kilo, should there really be a difference between kilos? Pls enlighten me sirs!

There's no law to the amount of feed to give to your fish per time. All you need to do is to feed to satisfaction but DON'T OVER FEED to the point that you are leaving left over feed on top of the pond. Such practice will eat into your profit and at the same time polute your water which can end up in killing your fish. I personally don't believe nor give formular for feeding regime. This is because, farmer A that feed his fish EFFECTIVELY once or two twice a day will have a better yield to farmer B that feeds SPARINGLY 4times a day. All that matters is the QUALITY & the QUANTITY of feed that you are giving to your fish. Also, you have to be conscious of the cost of your production. That should GUIDE you to know how much to expend on your production. Always carry out a constant market survey analysis to know both the current production cost and the selling price. Endeavour to always monitor the growth/weight of your fish also on weekly basis by randomly picking and weighting some fish. You MUST also train yourself on RECORD KEEPING. Detailed book keeping will help you to know when to sell your fish because you have an idea of what your production cost should be. Hence, you begin to prepare yourself for the harvest once you've spent the expected production cost per unit on them.
The reason why you should not exceed the production cost of your environment or locality is because you are selling your fish to the same people that will buy from other farmers around you.

Wishing you all the very best!!!
@Nuvembarzintl, God bless u for this insight. You have actually answered most questions battling with my mind on this fish rearing. Thanks once again.

Please read my post again carefully I didn't say one can raise juvenile with #75.. I said I pegged it down at #150 to raise the juveniles to maturity.. And to raise 500 juveniles u have to multiply by #150 that will give us
#75,000 to raise them to maturity...

NB. The price for raising them also depends on the type of feed you give to them and the feeding regimes and also the time of harvest so it may be lesser or higher than #75,000.. Thanks
Talking of feeding regiments sir@ oga Robonski, as a fresher, how do I determine d amount of feed I give to my juvenile or bigger fishes as at when due. Also how many times do I feed them as juveniles or as bigger fish. To be specific let's use 1000 pieces as example. And the pond type is plastic tank if it could make a difference in feeding pattern. Thank you.

note: too much of either d cold or hot is bad for fishes. If too cold your fishes won't eat well, if too hot? they become stressed & possible disease outbreak. Now to the main course, just get palm front, tarpaulin or good material that could cover like 60% of a side of your pond at least, it will regulate d heat to some extent. If extreme heat increase d % of coverage. That will combat the challenge u might have. It is also a good way to know a sick/disease or weak fish, the healthy ones will hide under d shade & d sick ones will be mostly at d open end, though they all come to the open end when u feed the fishes. Other ideas is to do dripping if mobile tanks or put your tanks close to trees, banana etc.For earthen , heaven do the regulations, though no harm planting banana around your ponds
thanks so much sir@excelsior. I'm grateful for the insight on handling heat in plastic fish tanks

saheed,my advise is stop feed formulation for now ,because feeds that is not perfectly dried mostly contain aflatoxin which kill fishes, tarpaulin normally stores fungi & bacteria & normally have slime,it is best to clean with foam & iodine, but u hav to remove d fishes.concerning d use of tetracyline 3-4 capsules is enough to mix with water of about a feet high, this measure is mostly for extreme case of disease & when they cease to eat, afta 1Hr top up
@excelsior and other ogas, how can I ensure that my formulated feed is properly dry to avoid aflatoxin which kills fishes?

aerating water when dissolved oxygen concentrations are near saturation is wasteful because oxygen transfer and aeration efficiency are very low under those conditions...

I once used an earator and I found it very effective especially in nurturing fries... One should take into consideration the water temparature excesive heat deters the growth of the fish...
