CHAPTER 03

A TOTAL RECALL

WRITTEN BY REPOGIRL

TWO YEARS AGO 2:15 A.M

Tonia was in some sort of trouble and he feared he wouldn’t get to her in time. When her call came in thirty minutes ago, Rimi was half asleep having dozed off while watching a movie. He wondered in his groggy state what it was she wanted that late in the night as she only called him when she needed something. He hadn't seen her for a few days and her door had been padlocked so he assumed she had travelled

The hushed and apprehensive tone of her voice sent shivers through him, snapping him awake in a second.

“Rimi, please get down to my office...I don’t know what to do.... there’s something going on.... There are some people here .....Please hurry!” She said before cutting him off.

Hurriedly he found something to wear, hopping on to the first available cab he found and when they ran into some traffic which had been at a standstill, he’d jumped out and proceeded on foot. Jogging at a steady pace, the shop only a few blocks away.

“Oh God, let her be alright.” He kept repeating to himself as he approached the place, he wasn't religious because one pastor had lied to him about being born into a line of prophets who saw things through dreams but during his varsity years he had failed one too many exams because of the hogwashed dreams. From then he had decided to stop believing that rubbish, but he found himself muttering the short prayer over and over again, hoping if there was a God out there somewhere, he would keep the love of his life safe. They might be at loggerheads most of the time but he didn’t know what he would do if she came to any harm.

For most of his life he had been a loner, having lost both parents at an early age. An aunt had taken him in but she’d become ill when he’d hit his teens. A long dragging sickness that had slowly eaten at her until she’d passed on in his final year at the university. Not long after that he had met Uche.

They had met during their youth corps and had hit it off immediately as friends. They'd shared something in common as his father who lived in Double R town had also been going through that dradded disease; cancer, the same disease which had claimed the life of his aunt. Unlike Uche, Rimi wasn't as outgoing, when they hung out, Uche was usually the life of the party while Rimi preferred to hang back. Mysterious and broody, Uche liked to call him. Uche had a way with people and was good at getting them to part with their money, he called it his 'talent'.

Rimi and Uche were polar opposites, where Rimi believed in hardwork, Uche was more about the quick buck. Rimi laboured all day to make an honest living but Uche thought up some quick scam or the other to make quick bucks off poor unsuspecting people. Aside his dark goodlooks, Uche was equipped with a sharp intellect, most times outwitting Rimi in the simplest of things. Rimi had often lost money of which he didn’t even have to bet with Uche but the two still remained great friends. Whenever Uche got into trouble which was almost always, it was Rimi who helped him out. Uche was the brains while he was the brawn.

Both of them had been unable to secure jobs and shared a self contain apartment which they could ill afford. He and Uche were as close as some brothers, putting whatever they made together to pay the rent and buy groceries. They even shared each other’s clothing, just that morning Uche had worn Rimi’s favourite shoes he’d planned on wearing to work, the black metal capped shoes, he’d saved up for months to buy but that hadn’t been much of a problem, he had managed another old shoe in its place.

It was in their rundown compound Rimi had met Antonia, the most beautiful, stunning lady he had ever set his eyes upon. He’d just been coming back from one of his menial jobs he had just finished doing when he’d seen her struggling with some luggage as she’d newly been moving into the vacant room next to theirs.

He’d been so lucky to have seen her first. It had been in the afternoon, none of the other guys had been around and he knew they wouldn’t have hesitated to pounce on such a beauty. She was tall, smoothly dark skinned with a svelte figure to die for. Rimi hadn’t hesitated to advance on such a beauty, he couldn’t afford to waste time as other guys in the neighbourhood were serious threats. He'd assisted with her bags that day and had been chasing after her since.

As was the female style she rebuffed his advances but he’d remained persistent, doing little things for her and trying to make her see reason why he was the one for her. He’d warned the other guys from coming close to her and they had complied, for what Rimi didn’t possess in brains, he did in brawn. He was tall,a towering six feet five with an athletic body toned from hours of indulging in one menial labour or the other. The only guy who was allowed to hang around Tonia aside him was his closest friend, Uche for Rimi trusted only him.

Believing he would get her in the end, he’d played the part of a good friend to her. Always there to help with anything, he also tried advising her but being strong willed and highly opinionated, she was never in agreement with him. They fought most of the time, one hot fight he recalled was when she had gone ahead to befriend that thug of a politician, Brown Dino.

It had cut him real deep but Uche had persuaded him, telling him it was only a means to an end for her. Girls like Tonia wouldn’t settle for a broke guy like him when wealthy men knocked at their door. If he earned more money, Tonia might see reason to be with him.

Rimi hadn't liked it but he'd lived with it while still hoping to win her affections someday soon. He had been working really hard to meet that goal and finally, some weeks back he had gotten a job with a construction firm as an assistant supervisor on a site, if he did really well he could be promoted to supervisor and then he would move out from that shi't hole of an apartment into a slightly more agreeable place, he was quite sure Tonia would notice him then.

First he had to make sure she was well. Finally at the building now, all seemed eerily quiet. The building was dark and not a light was on outside, the sign on the plexiglass said 'Closed'. Knocking on the front door lightly, he awaited a response of which none came.

Bringing out his phone he dialled her number again for the umpteenth time and got the same 'switched off ' voice prompt. Frowning, he wondered what in the world could be happening. Could he call the police?

“No, that would take too long.” he decided.

Knocking once again against the doors with no reply he went for the handle and turned it.

To his utmost surprise the door slid open, urging him into the dark show room. That wasn’t right, the doors were not supposed to be unlocked at this time. He knew he should call the cops but he couldn’t wait while something happened toTonia.

Creeping in as slowly and lightly, he made for the back office where he could see some sort of dim illumination noting that the pieces in the showroom were all gone, they were probably moving things around. He had visited Tonia at work a few times to know he was going into the direction of the strong room which housed valuable items not presently on display.

The offices were deserted as they should be at that time of the night and he found the light was coming from the strong room itself. Now that wasn’t right, the room was always locked and only a handful of employees had the combination to its lock, Tonia had told him so.

“What the hell?” he muttered finding the room open and empty, the shelves were all bare. What exactly had happened there? Looking down, near his feet he saw an exquisitely made gold necklace with a gold star shaped pendant.

Reflexively, he squatted and picked it up but before he could straighten up, he saw a movement from his side eye. Someone else was in the room. It was probably the shock at suddenly realising he hadn't been alone afterall, but he’d been too slow to react. He couldn't defend himself against the sharp blow to the back of his head.

He felt his head explode in a pain so great, his knees buckled and he dropped in a crumbled heap on the floor. Being a strong guy, he willed his body to obey him. Despite the pain he tried using his hands to prop himself up but they had turned to jelly refusing to support him. His vision seemed blurry and he felt faint but he willed himself not to give into unconsciousness.

His blurry eyes made out the feet of his attacker, who approached him slowly. Something about the shoes, they were familiar and he tasked his severely aching head to recall them.

Was this how Tonia had been killed? Was this how he was going to die?

“Please...” He managed a plea, his voice strange to his own ears as he felt a warm liquid trickle down his ear.

His head throbbed painfully, like the mother of all migraines, and his vision got even more blurry, he was succumbing to unconsciousness when another sharp pain exploded in his skull, knocking him out cold but not before he had placed his attackers shoes, they were his black metal capped shoes.

“I remember,” He whispered opening his eyes slowly, suddenly staring at the prettiest doe eyes he had seen in a really long while. It was the lady with the necklace, and now it dangled quite close to his face as she was leaning toward him, a worried frown creasing her brows.

Had he passed out? He wondered realising he was not in the most flattering of positions, lying with his back to the ground. Struggling to clear his muddled mind, He sat up.

“Are you alright?” She asked, her voice light, tinged with a bit of an accent.

“I think so, what happened?” He asked his eyes falling back to her cleavage, where the necklace fit so snuggly. That little thing had brought the memories flooding in and he must have lost consciousness. He wondered if it was the same one he had seen that night or a replica. It sure looked pretty similar.

“You fainted.” She replied, her voice dragging his eyes up to her face. she was dainty in her features, innocent looking doe eyes, a pert nose leading to small but full lips which his gaze lingered upon a tad longer than necessary, framed by a heartshaped face, while luscious dark hair fell effortlessly to her shoulders. She was pretty but he supposed any female would look pretty to him as he’d been locked away for quite a while.

An image of Tonia flashed through his mind and he recollected the day of his sentencing. She had been there..... she had been there with Uche.....and suddenly, another vision of metal capped shoes flashed and he remembered again what had really occurred in the store. Uche, that rat bastard! But then anybody could have worn those shoes, Uche wouldn't be that foolish to commit such a heirnous crime with the victim's shoes.

“Can he get up?” A male voice asked and he looked up, noticing for the first time the little crowd in the restaurant all looking down at him but not brave enough to come close. Only the pendant lady had dared to, they probably feared he had ebola.

Deciding he'd entertained them enough he shuffled to his feet, pendant lady rising up with him. He had to find Tonia, goodness only knew the lies Uche had fed her with all this time.

There must have been a murderous look on his face because the pendant lady asked again “You're sure you are fine?”

The little crowd had begun dispersing as there wasn’t much else to see now.

“Yes, I think so.....” he replied his gaze drawn to the pendant again, “Please may I ask, .... where did you get that necklace from?”

Her eyes went down to look at it, she held it up “My necklace?” She asked and he nodded “A few years back at Adam’sPearls.”

His eyes shot up, that was where Tonia had worked “Adams Pearls?” He repeated stupidly.

“Is there a problem?” she asked.

“Umm.. no.” He said hurriedly dashing for the exit before remembering his manners, he turned, “Thanks for the help.” He called back, to which she nodded.

********

Zainab had waited a long time for this day. She had looked forward to that moment when she would meet the man who had her father and only surviving parent at the time gruesomely murdered. It hadn't been enough stealing everything he had, he'd had to kill the man who had already been plunged into huge debt.

The news had left her stunned and in shock for a few days. Two years after and she still hadn't been able to move on from it. It had been of little comfort that the killer was in jail but when she'd heard he was being released on the grounds of amnesia, she'd gone mad with anger.

He was a killer, a thief and they were going to just let him walk away? No way that was happening. She had decided to take matters into her own hands.

She had never killed anyone before, but her father's death had hit her really hard and since the justice system seemed to be slacking, she was prepared to send the perpetrator down into hell all by herself.

Resigning her job in another state she had moved back home, taken up a lower paying job with the Industrial Bank and began target and shooting practice at the local shooting range. She had proved a fast learner, surprising the instructor, unknown to him she always imagined the dummy target as the man who had murdered her father.

She had waited in the restaurant knowing he would show up. It was the usual meet up place for released convicts waiting to be picked up by friends or family. She believed he would be there to meet with someone. Also, it wasn't rocket science to know the first thing someone locked up for a while would want was good food. The prison's cafeteria didn't offer much options aside beans, she had heard.

He hadn't met with anyone but had chosen to eat and just as she had thought, her plan had worked. She'd had a feeling he would be drawn to the necklace as it had been the item found clutched in his hand at the store. She had worn it to get his attention but she hadn't been prepared at him passing out at the sight of it. She thought she had killed him and had rushed to his side as he'd fallen to the ground.

He hadn't died, just in some kind of shock, muttering some unintelligent words before he had come to.

Zainab had studied him in those few minutes. He was a big guy, dark with rough features, he'd probably look better if he had a shave.

Was this the face of a murderer?” she had wondered for a fleeting second before he had opened his eyes. Deep set, he had held hers for a brief second before she had asked if he was alright.

His behaviour had been quite strange and not exactly in accordance with the profile of a thief and murderer. His eyes had kept going back to the necklace as if scared it would jump and attack him.

He really didn't seem like the brute she'd made him up to be in her mind. The man seemed confused but could it all be an act? Why would he be acting when he didn't even know who she was? He had thanked her for goodness sake!

She was presently in her car, following the cab he'd taken and it seemed they were en route to her late father's store. The place was deserted now, the banks had claimed the building, intending to sell it to cover her father's debts. So far they hadn't been successful, the place had been left to gather dust now.

He would be in for a shocker when he got there, she thought glancing at her handbag sitting on the floor of the passenger seat. In it was a gun that had belonged to her father, It would be her parting gift to him, confused or no.

Its quite possible o, I have seen a woman with 5 kids who looks so trim and young, you wouldn't even know she's married.

and *clears throat* even I myself have had three kids and still lepa to the bones.

my grandmum had eight and was still trim till she died. So, its very possible. I guess its in the genes but these days with some exercise, skin treatments and a little surgery to nip and tuck here and there, one can manage to look good.
