PoliticsJonathan Reveals What Nigeria Owes Abdulsalmi Abubakar by Reportmusic(op): 4:14pm On Jun 14, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/President-Goodluck-Jonathan.jpg
Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated ex-military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), on his 76 birthday.

Jonathan described Abubakar as a great patriot and a man of peace, who “mid-wife” the shortest but most successful transition of power from the military to a democratically elected civilian.

In his goodwill message signed by his Spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan said Nigeria owed Abubakar a debt of gratitude.

He said, “May you be blessed because just as the Muslim Ummah celebrates the end of Ramadan, Nigeria celebrates you for ending military rule.

“On this very special anniversary, I join you, your family, well-wishers and millions of other Nigerians to give thanks to Almighty God for a life of great achievements and inspiring service to humanity.

“Your exemplary patriotism and deep commitment to the development and unity of our nation is evident in your enduring legacies, having served Nigeria as a brave soldier and Head of State; who heeded the call to national duty at a time of distress and helped navigate our dear nation to the democracy which it now enjoys.

“I wish you good health and more productive years so that our great country will continue to benefit from your wisdom and wealth of experience.”

SportsWorld Cup: Russia Stops Nigeria’s Fans From Bringing Live Chicken To Stadium by Reportmusic(op): 3:30pm On Jun 14, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/DfqE_MRU8AEnjBx.jpg
Russia has denied Nigeria’s football fans the opportunity to bring live chickens into the stadium when the Super Eagles are playing.

As reported by Russia’s Interfax.ru, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Kaliningrad region, Andrei Ermak, told reporters.

“Our information center MCH-2018 receives a lot of various questions: fans from Nigeria asked if it’s possible to go to the stadium with a chicken, it’s their symbol, the citizens are sick with them at all matches, we told them that to pass a live chicken, in any case, it is impossible “, – said Ermak.

At the same time, he noted that if the Nigerians are rooting for their team in other places, “we will, of course, advise them where the chicken can be bought.”

We are ready to satisfy the most eccentric inquiries,” the regional minister added.

The supporters club of the Super Eagles have been known to go into stadiums with a live chicken, which is one of the ways they cheer on the team to victory.

Nigeria fans were turned away from Ellis Park in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2010 after their demand to take chickens, painted in the nation’s colours into the stadium was refused.

Meanwhile, the minister said that Kaliningrad expects the arrival of 130 to 150 thousand fans.

At each match, Russians will be up to 15 thousand people, another 10 thousand seats will be proportionally taken by fans from countries whose teams will play at the World Cup, and the remaining 10 thousand will have to be citizens of other countries.

PoliticsAdeyanju Regains Freedom As Police Ban Protest At Unity Fountain by Reportmusic(op): 5:03pm On Apr 13, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/2018_4large_Adeyanju.jpeg
The FCT Command of the Nigerian Police has released human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju who was teargased and arrested at the unity fountain Abuja for alleged inciting civil unrest.

Adeyanju was arrested during the sit-out protest by the members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria ( IMN ) who are protesting for the release of their leader Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.

He was released following the intervention of the leader of OurMumuDonDo Movement, Charles Oputa ( Charly Boy ) who stormed the command and met with the Commissioner of Police, Sadiq Abubakar Bello to secure his release.
He was arrested for allegedly inciting civil unrest by gathering members of the Shi’ites to organize a peaceful protest. The police maintained that the group has crossed the red line by doing so.
The Commissioner of Police told charly boy that the police would no longer allow any group to stage protest or rally at the fountain. He told charly boy to convey the message to other group and abide by the directive.
The Buhari Media Support Group, recently, asked for the arrest and interrogation of Adeyanju for crimes of sedition. The group made this known in a statement signed by its chairman Austin Braimoh and secretary Cassidy Madueke.

According to the statement “Deji Adeyanju is notorious for his mischief and falsehood. He does this deliberately to incite the public. He is also known for his media consultancy with the Islamic Movement of Nigeria on whose platform he has called for civil unrest across the country against the government”

PoliticsFG Committed To Prosperity Of Nigerians – Osinbajo by Reportmusic(op): 6:41pm On Apr 12, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Yemi-Osinbajo.jpg
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says the Federal Government remains committed to delivering a lasting prosperity to all Nigerians.

Professor Osinbajo said this on Thursday at a Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) clinic in Onitsha, the commercial capital of Anambra State.

As part of efforts to diversify the economy, he said the Federal Government was enhancing the efforts of the state governments to improve the living standard of the people.

“In the past three years, we have demonstrated an abiding commitment to facilitating genuine efforts by all states of the Federation to attract investment to diversify the economic base and deliver lasting prosperity to their people.

“So, the holding of this MSME clinic here today is a further demonstration of that commitment,” he said.

The vice president added that the Federal Government was committed to working with Anambra to create a better life for those who live, work, and carry out their businesses in the state.

He described the state as the home of the nation’s commerce, saying the Onitsha market has been legendary for a very long time giving its size and its vibrancy.

Osinbajo, however, decried that MSMEs have been neglected in the country over the years, as a result of competing priorities and the tendency to discount the real contributions of the sector to the nation’s economy.

He stressed that while MSMEs are seen to be small, together they account for about 50 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and more than 80 per cent of the Nigerian labour force.

The vice president noted further that they are of decisive importance in the economy as it has become inevitable for government to look inwards to grow what Nigerians eat and consume what they make.

He explained that the MSMEs clinics were conceived in this context and were designed to bring regulatory agencies whose work affects the business experience of small businesses nearer to them.

Professor Osinbajo also revealed that the partnership between the Federal Government and Anambra is not limited to national MSMEs clinic, but also extended to other areas such as the home-grown school feeding programme.

He said both governments are already feeding more than 103,000 pupils and engaging about 1,004 cooks in several schools of at least 1,600 across the state.

The event was also attended by the state governor, Willie Obiano; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige; and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, among other dignitaries.

Bandits have on Wednesday attacked two villages in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara, killing some people.

The bandits attacked a mining site at Kuru-kuru village and also ambushed some people from the neighbouring Jarkuka village as they mobilised to bring help to Kuru-kuru.

A witness, Sadi Musa, said scores of people were killed at the mining site on Wednesday evening which forced the miners to flee for safety.

Mr Musa said when residents from the nearby Jarkuka came later to join the Kuru-kuru survivors in burying the dead, the gunmen attacked again, and killed more people.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Mohammed Shehu said, “we are aware of the attack but I cannot give you details now until my commissioner is fully briefed’’.

The bandits had attacked Bawan Daji village in the same Anka Local Government Area two weeks ago and killed over 30 people.

They returned the following day and killed mourners at a grave yard.

This led to the deployment of Air Force and Army personnel to the area to contain the situation.

The soldiers had since swung into action and killed several bandits.

PoliticsFFK Slams Archbishop Of Canterbury For Supporting President Buhari’s Re-election by Reportmusic(op): 11:50am On Apr 12, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/DahLM5CXcAQKWGJ.jpg
Femi Fani-Kayode in a post shared on his Facebook page, slammed the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, for having a meeting with President Buhari in the UK yesterday April 11th and declaring his support for Buhari’s 2nd term bid. Read FFK’s post below

“You have my best wishes on your recent decision. I read your declaration speech. We are neutral as a Church but we will pray for you. Great statesmen are those who run for the good of their country. We will be praying for you”- Archbishop Justin Welby to President Muhammadu Buhari.

It is clear to me that this ‘same-sex-marriage-loving’ and confused English Archbishop deserves to be hung, drawn, quartered and burnt at the stake!

Since when did the Church of England and the Archbishop of Canterbury sink so low?

You are associating with a tyrant who is in open collusion and collaboration with Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram and who has presided over, orchestrated and encouraged the mass murder and slaughter of hundreds of thousands of his own people.

This is a man who has refused to label the Fulani herdsmen terrorists and who has publicly identified with some of the core values of Boko Haram and defended them on numerous occasions in the past.

You say that you are neutral as a Church yet you keep having photo-ops and closed-door meetings with the tyrant and you refuse to condemn him for his gross and barbaric human rights violations, his attacks on and marginalisation of the Christian faith, his contempt for the Church and his hatred for non-Muslims and non-Fulanis. Shame on you!

The attempt by the British government and intelligence agencies, using a discredited and out of touch ‘same-sex-marriage-loving’ ArchbishopJustin Welby, to help to prop up and legitimise a failed tyrant, an ethnic cleanser and a genocidal maniac who hates and kills non-Fulanis, Shia Muslims, IPOB youths and Christians, will fail.

Politics2019 Presidency: Buhari’s Candidature Will Be A Liability To APC – UPP National by Reportmusic(op): 9:48am On Apr 10, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Chekwas-Okorie.jpg
The National chairman of the United Progressives Party (UPP), Chekwas Okorie, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s first tenure was a nightmare and predicted that his candidature for the 2019 presidency would be a liability to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

DAILY POST recalls that Okorie, last year, predicted that President Buhari will not re-contest the Presidential election in 2019.

But, the President, at a National Executive Council meeting of the ruling party yesterday, disclosed his intentions to go for a second term in office.

However, Okorie while reacting to Buhari’s disclosure of intention to run for second term told Sun Newspaper: “We want to sympathise with the APC because they now have to grapple with the liability of having to present President Buhari to voters.

“In his first tenure, he became a nightmare to Nigerians and a monumental disaster. His failed promises, nepotism, sectionalism, lack of security of lives and properties, all these would haunt him in the campaigns leading to the next elections. It would be a tragedy for Nigerians to even contemplate another four years of this type of nightmare.

“APC has been in this quagmire for quite a while because they do not seem to have an alternative option and now that the battle line is drawn, it is left for Nigerians to choose between life and darkness.”

https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/junaid-mohammed.jpg
A Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed, has said that Nigerians will regret it if they vote President Muhammadu Buhari into office again.

President Buhari declared his intention to seek re-election in 2019 yesterday.

Mohammed said it was left for Nigerians whether Buhari will get another term or not.

Speakiing with Vanguard, Mohammed said, “I believe nobody should be surprised about Buhari’s declaration.

“Why? Because Buhari is a kind of man that cares less about Nigerians and wants to hold on to power as long as he can.

“It is now left for Nigerians to decide whether he stays on or not.

“What I can boldly say is that if Buhari wins another term in office, there will not be end to corruption, insurgency, and insecurity.

“His loyalists and cronies will continue to milk the country.”

PoliticsAPC Chairman, Oyegun Speaks On Disagreements Over His Tenure Elongation by Reportmusic(op): 7:32pm On Apr 09, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Oyegun-1.jpg
The National Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Monday said disagreements and debates that characterised activities of the party lately were hallmarks of progressive politics.

He stated this at the party´s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday in Abuja.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had declared that members of the Odigie-Oyegun led National Working Committee of the APC are not eligible to seek reelection in the forthcoming congresses and national convention of the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, quoted Odigie-Oyegun as saying ´´I must say that disagreements, debates and contentions are the hallmarks of progressive politics. Therefore, let no one tell you that our party was about to collapse only because we disagreed.

´´In the past days, I have read news reports and all manner of comments and opinions that have tried to frame the majority decision of NEC as an attempt to primarily secure tenure elongation for Odigie-Oyegun and the NWC.

´´This is quite unfortunate because nothing could be further from the truth.

´´If anything, what our experience in the last few days has confirmed is that we can disagree without being disagreeable, and that our party may be young, but we remain the bastion of progressive politics in Nigeria.´´

He commended Buhari for what he described as “his rare act of graciousness and humility’’.

He said that even after opposing the tenure extension as approved by the party´s NEC, Buhari allowed further consideration on the subject “which proved him to be a true democrat and a genuine party man’’.

According to the national chairman, where the President would have imposed his will, he exhibited true leadership by allowing himself to be open to alternative opinions, regardless of his personal interest.

He added that the party´s strength would continue to rest on its ability to forge consensus even from apparently irreconcilable issues.

Odigie-Oyegun charged members of the party to be ready to accept alternative viewpoints as the President had done, even when such viewpoints did not immediately reflect their preferences.

Politics”someone From The North Will Replace President Buhari” Pastor Tunde Bakare Says by Reportmusic(op): 7:17pm On Apr 09, 2018

Former Vice Presidential candidate and senior pastor of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare, says “a tender plant from the North” will replace President Buhari come 2019. The clergyman said this while preaching in his church yesterday April 8th.

“The reason things are going haywire in Nigeria today is because God is preparing a tender plant from the side of the north. Once this president is out, another tender plant is entering. It will be clear to us that God preserved us for 30 years, preparing us for what he has prepared for us.

“I am not politicking with you. I am declaring thus saith the Lord – to this end was I born, for this purpose came I into the world that Nigeria will be saved, Nigeria will be changed, and Nigeria will become great in my lifetime. The mouth of the Lord has spoken it and the zeal of the Lord shall accomplish it.” he said

PoliticsOyegun Sidelined Tinubu After Buhari’s Victory – APC Chieftain, Kpodo by Reportmusic(op): 12:15pm On Apr 06, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/oyegun-tinubu.jpeg
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Bayelsa State, Perekeme Kpodo, on Thursday, called for the immediate resignation of the party’s National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun.

Kpodo, a former interim chairman of the APC in Bayelsa, said Oyegun should leave the party’s exalted office for negligence of his duties and sowing a seed of discord among notable members of the party.

He told The Nation that Oyegun could not manage the success of the APC, but instead promoted selfish agenda that threw the party into avoidable crisis.

He said: “Tinubu is one of those, who masterminded the victory of the APC. He is the party’s think-tank. It is public knowledge. He spent money, struggled and did the brainwork with some of his associates and allies.

“President Muhammadu Buhari also joined the train with his political associates. Their hard work led to the formation of this party.

“With that force, they grabbed power coupled with the fact that people were tired of PDP because the party was deep into impunity and embezzlement of funds. They were collecting money without hinderances and the former President aided them.

“Everybody hoped on APC to change the impunity. APC came and won. However, the greatest mistake is the party chairman, Oyegun. He couldn’t manage the success of APC. He failed to handle the party the way it was expected of him. Oyegun went to sleep after the victory.

“He couldn’t engage party stakeholders. He couldn’t wade into crisis and settle disputes quickly. He failed to organise meetings, seminars and other programmes to strengthen the party.

“With what has transpired so far, Oyegun spearheaded the attempts of sidelining Tinubu. Tinubu, who did all these good jobs was sidelined from the government. Nobody heard about him. People became surprised.

“Meanwhile Oyegun was the one trying to set confusion between Tinubu and Mr. President. He created an impression that they were quarreling”.

Kpodo, however, commended Buhari for speaking out against the “arbitrary tenure elongation” of Oyegun and bringing Tinubu to reconcile the grievances in APC.

“We thank God that the President realized on time that we have to go back to the old structures. He called Tinubu back realising that without him this party is finished”, he said.

Politics‘politicians More Dangerous Than Boko Haram, Herdsmen’ – Cardinal Okogie by Reportmusic(op): 11:47am On Apr 06, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/okogie.jpg
Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, yesterday, wrote Nigerians, speaking on the greatest problem of the masses.

According to the cleric, politicians were more harmful to Nigerians than the incessant attacks by Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen.

The former Archbishop said the recent call by former Defence Minister, Lt. General Theophilus Danjuma (retd), for self-defence should normally cause apprehensions in the presidency, since its legitimacy was in doubt.

In his latest letter to the nation, entitled “We are waiting and watching 2,” Okogie said politicians, rather than herdsmen, kidnappers and armed robbers, were the real threat to the nation’s security.

His letter came at a time Rev. Fr. Matthew Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, said it would be the greatest miracle for Nigeria to pull through the 2019 elections successfully.

Okogie said rather than worry about several informed admonitions, government’s apologists, as usual, opted to insult the messenger, insisting that the nation’s “political leaders constitute the greatest threat to security in this country, not armed robbers nor kidnappers, not Boko Haram nor herdsmen.”

Okogie’s letter is a follow-up to his last, with the same title.

It reads, “Whoever loves Nigeria should be concerned about the security of life and property within her borders.

“It affects all of us across party, ethnic and religious lines. It affects the rich and the poor.

“Unfortunately, it can, and it ought to be said that our political leaders constitute the greatest threat to security in this country, not armed robbers nor kidnappers, not Boko Haram nor herdsmen.

“Nigerians are currently forced to watch a show of shame by the ruling party of today and the ruling party of yesterday.

“Such are accusations and counter-accusations of looting that Nigerians find it difficult to differentiate between the accuser and the accused.

“Huge sums of money belonging to the people of Nigeria obviously got into wrong hands and for wrong reasons. There are good reasons to suspect that the looting that took place cut across party lines.

“Nigerians deserve to know how, for example, the two leading parties financed their campaigns in 2015.

“But instead of honest answers, we are treated by the two big parties to a theatrical display of politically motivated compilation of lists of looters.

PoliticsWe Increased Train Fare Because Rich People Use It More Than The Poor – Amaechi by Reportmusic(op): 6:41pm On Apr 05, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/DaCMXPAWkAYPZjB.jpg
Rotimi Amaechi, minister for transportation, says the train fares between Kaduna and Abuja was increased because majority of those using the service are rich.

Speaking on Thursday at the 3rd edition of the Kaduna Investment Summit, Amaechi said the intention of the president towards the railway was to transport poor people.

“Some of you have been asking why we increased the fare between Kaduna and Abuja,” he said during his address at the summit.

“For each locomotive, we spend N56 million, when we were charging you N600, we were getting N16 million so all you rich men, we were dashing you N40 million per month. Actually, very few poor men use those trains. The actual intent of the president is to allow us to move poor people from Kaduna to Abuja. If you go to Rigasa, you will see the big men pack their cars and use the railway and chase away the poor people.

“So since it’s big men that use the railway, we jerked up the prices. You know what it’s called — appropriate pricing. So we price according to your pocket but it does not affect our subsidy, we still subsidise the railway.”

The minister encouraged people to continue making government accountable saying he is the first to know when locomotives are faulty.

“The funny thing about the social media is that anytime there is a problem with the railway, the first person to know is me,” he said.

“I see all sorts of videos and I wonder if they realise that I am the minister for transport not the managing director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation so I can’t run the railways.

“In the past, none of you can send a video to a minister but now you not only send, they direct me on what to do. I urge you to continue in that light and make us accountable to you.”

Politics‘you Are Gutless, treacherous Bastard’ – FFK Attacks Oluwo For Converting To Emir by Reportmusic(op): 1:27pm On Apr 02, 2018

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has lashed out at the Oluwo of Iwoland in Osun State, Abdulrasheed Akanbi, for insisting to be called an ‘Emir of Yorubaland’.

The monarch had reportedly said he adopted the Emir title , which is peculiar to the North, in place of Oba, because northern Emirs “do not begrudge themselves like Yoruba Obas”.

Reacting, Fani-Kayode described the Oba as a ”gutless and treacherous bastard who is an Islamofascist.”

Fani on Twitter wrote: ”This is Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo who now insists that he must be called the Emir of Yorubaland.

”He is a gutless and treacherous bastard who is an Islamofascist and who has sold his people to the Fulani raiders.

”May God curse the day that he was born.”

PoliticsMan Shoots Uncle Dead For Advising Him To Stop Drinking “suck And Die” by Reportmusic(op): 1:17pm On Apr 02, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Dodo-Baraje.jpg
A 25-year-old man, Dodo Baraje, has been arrested by the Niger State Police Command for shooting his uncle to death for advising him to stop drinking.

The suspect reportedly shot his 50-year-old uncle identified as Baraje for advising him to stop drinking a local concoction known as “suck and die”.

An argument was said to have occurred between the duo over the matter during which the uncle beat him up.

Enraged by his uncle’s actions, Dodo was said to have run into the house and brought out a gun with which he shot Baraje.

Baraje reportedly raised the suspect from infancy until he got married.

Confessing to the crime, Dodo said, “Out of annoyance, I ran into the house, picked a gun and shot him. I never knew that he would die, he was only correcting me so that I will be a better person in the society, someone my family will be proud of.”

He added, “I don’t know how I am going to explain this to my family, especially to my wife who loved my late uncle so much. In fact, I was under the influence of alcohol; ordinarily I wouldn’t have killed my uncle who took care of me.

“I had never quarreled with him before, honestly, I don’t know what came over me. May Allah forgive me. I now realised what I have done to my life, I am a fool.”

PoliticsShehu Sani An ‘internally Displaced Person In APC’ – PDP Group by Reportmusic(op): 11:08am On Mar 28, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Shehu-Sani3.jpg
A youth wing of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central, to dump the All Progressive Congress (APC).

A joint statement signed by the National Coordinator of the PDP National Youth League, Honourable Inioribo Tamunotonye and the National Publicity Secretary, Zainab Al-Amin, said the lawmaker had become an internally displaced person in the ruling party.

They said APC had betrayed him despite serving his people and the people of Nigeria through effective representation.

“Rather than reward and appreciate Shehu Sani for his people-oriented position and representation, his party, APC has never failed to undermine and frustrate him at any given forum”, it continued.

“They have turned him into an internally displaced Politician (IDP) of sought simply because he chose to align with his people instead of serving President Buhari and his failed administration.

“The APC has continued to persecute Senator Sani over his decision to align with the people of Kaduna State in this difficult period they have been experiencing under evil Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his band of sycophants,” the statement concluded.

PoliticsTranscript Of Bill Gates Speech To Buhari In Nigeria by Reportmusic(op): 5:47pm On Mar 27, 2018
https://www.reportnaija.ng/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/5aba63e8536b1.jpg
Last week, Microsoft founder, Bill Gates was in Nigeria where he addressed a special session of the National Economic Council, with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, state governors, and ministers in attendance.

He spoke on why the government needs to change the narrative of development efforts by focusing on human development, by investing on education, health and creating opportunities for the people.

Below is the ful text of the speech:

Your Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Senator Bukola Saraki, Senate President; Honorable Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House; Your Excellencies, executive governors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Royal fathers; Distinguished ladies and gentlemen. And as you say in Nigeria, all other protocols observed. Thank you for welcoming me to Nigeria.

I’ve been coming here regularly since 2006, and I’ve always felt welcome. Nigerians usually greet me warmly. The first time I met the Sultan of Sokoto, I was honored that he greeted me with the gift of a white horse.

At some point during every visit, though, some brave person eventually asks me—very politely—”Why are you actually here?” It’s an understandable question. Most American technology guys don’t wander around Nigeria learning about its health system. But I think I have a good answer.

When we started Microsoft 40 years ago, we wanted to build a successful business, but we also wanted to make people’s lives better. We believed computers could revolutionise the way people lived and worked. But back then only big companies could afford them. We wanted to give everybody access.

As I got older, traveled more, and learned more about the world, I realised that billions of people had a problem that computers couldn’t solve. They lacked the basics of a good life: food, shelter, health, education, and opportunity.

And so I started my second career with my wife Melinda. With the money I’d been lucky enough to earn at Microsoft, we started working toward a different goal: a healthy and productive life for everyone.

That’s why I come to Nigeria, and that’s why Melinda and I will continue coming for as long as we are able. Our foundation’s biggest office in Africa is here. We have committed over $1.6 billion in Nigeria so far, and we plan to increase our commitment. We have strong relationships with the federal government, state governments, businesses, NGOs, and civil society organisations. We are eager to support you as you work to make Nigeria a global economic powerhouse that provides opportunity for all its citizens—as you strive to fulfil this country’s immense promise.

?I’m blown away by how much Nigeria has changed in the past decade.

Consider the technology sector. That energy I talked about during the early days of Microsoft, our passion and our eagerness to take risks…. That’s the same energy that powers technology hubs across Nigeria like Co-Creation and Enspire.

The novelist Chimamanda Adichie, who my wife especially admires, captured the country’s spirit when she said her fellow Nigerians have “big dreams and big ambitions.”

This line graph of Nigeria’s per capita GDP shows where those dreams and ambitions can lead. With the exception of the recent recession, the slope goes straight up. As a result of this growth, Nigeria is now the biggest economy on the continent. You are rapidly approaching upper middle income status, like Brazil, China, and Mexico.

?But growth is not inevitable. Nigeria has unmatched economic potential, but what becomes of that potential depends on the choices you make as Nigeria’s leaders.

The most important choice you can make is to maximise your greatest resource, the Nigerian people. Nigeria will thrive when every Nigerian is able to thrive.

If you invest in their health, education, and opportunities—the “human capital” we are talking about today—then they will lay the foundation for sustained prosperity. If you don’t, however, then it is very important to recognise that there will be a sharp limit on how much the country can grow.

You see this risk in the data. From the point of view of the quality of life, much of Nigeria still looks like a low-income country.

Let me give a few examples.

In upper middle income countries, the average life expectancy is 75 years. In lower middle income countries, it’s 68. In low income countries, it’s 62. In Nigeria, it is lower still: just 53 years.Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth, with the fourth worst maternal mortality rate in the world, ahead of only Sierra Leone, Central African Republic, and Chad. One in three Nigerian children is chronically malnourished.

I do not enjoy speaking to you this bluntly when you have been gracious enough to invite me here. But I am applying an important lesson I learned from Alhaji Aliko Dangote. Recently, Aliko and I were having a conversation with several governors about their states’ official immunisation rates. Aliko’s way of stressing the importance of accurate data was to tell us, “I didn’t get rich by pretending to sell bags of cement I didn’t have.” I took from that that while it may be easier to be polite, it’s more important to face facts so that you can make progress.

On immunisation, you are already living that lesson: last year Nigeria revised its immunisation coverage numbers downward to reflect more accurate sources, and I applaud you for those lower numbers. They may look worse, but they are more real, which is the first step toward saving and improving more lives.

I urge you to apply this thinking to all your investments in your people. The Nigerian government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan identifies “investing in our people” as one of three “strategic objectives.” But the “execution priorities” don’t fully reflect people’s needs, prioritising physical capital over human capital.

To anchor the economy over the long term, investments in infrastructure and competitiveness must go hand in hand with investments in people. People without roads, ports, and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports, and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy.

In preparation for my visit, I asked a research institute at the University of Washington to model Nigeria’s economic growth under three scenarios related to health and education, the core of how economists define human capital.

Here you can see Nigeria’s per capita GDP growth from 2000 until today. If current education and health trends continue—if you spend the same amount in these areas and get the same results—per capita GDP flatlines, with economic growth just barely keeping up with population growth.

?If things get worse, it will decline. Unfortunately, this scenario is a very real possibility unless you intervene at both the federal and state levels. Because even in the worst-case scenario, your national income level is about to make you ineligible for certain kinds of development assistance and loans that you’ve been relying on to fund your health system and other priorities. Without more and better spent domestic money, investment in your people will decline by default as donor money shrinks—a lose-lose scenario for everyone.

?What do I mean by investing in your people? I mean prioritising health and education, the factors included in the model I just showed you. I also mean continuing to open up opportunities in the agriculture and micro-enterprise sectors, as the government has proposed in the ERGP. I mean creating the conditions where Nigerians can reach their goals while adding value to the economy—the win-win scenario.

However, if you commit to getting better results in health and education—if you spend more and more effectively—per capita GDP will stay on its remarkable pre-recession trajectory.

?This is the scenario we all want: Nigeria thrives because every Nigerian is able to thrive.

And the data makes it clear that this scenario is entirely within your reach.

Our foundation doesn’t invest directly in education here, but the World Bank World Development Report that just came out makes it clear that education leads to improvements in employment, productivity, and wages.

Today, though, more than half of rural Nigerian children can’t read and write.

The conclusion is inescapable: Nigeria’s economy tomorrow depends on improving its schools today.

The same is true of health, our foundation’s primary focus area.

In 1978, Dr. Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, who later became the Nigerian minister of health, helped establish primary health care as the global standard. We now know that a strong primary care system takes care of 90 percent of people’s health needs.

Tragically, 40 years after Dr. Ransome-Kuti helped other countries set a course for the future, the Nigerian primary health care system is broken.

The evidence for this can be found in the epidemic of chronic malnutrition, or stunting. As the name suggests, chronic malnutrition is not a disease children catch. It is a condition that develops over time because they are deprived of a diverse diet and the services a strong primary health care system provides.

The consequences of stunting are devastating. Though stunted children are defined as shorter than average, we’re not particularly concerned about their height. What we’re concerned about is their brains, or what Akin Adesina calls “gray matter infrastructure.”

This is a picture of the brain of a single normally developing infant. And next to it is a picture of the brain of a single chronically malnourished infant. Every brain and every child are different, but you can clearly see the difference in the number of neural connections in these two brains. And once this kind of damage is done, it’s very hard to repair.

In Nigeria, one in three children is chronically malnourished and could therefore be at risk. This is a tragedy for each one of these children; it is also a huge blow to the economy. According to the World Bank, addressing the stunting crisis in Nigeria would add almost $30 billion to the GDP.

So what will it take to solve stunting? It will take a focus on agricultural development, nutrition, and primary health care.

?In Nigeria, one in three children is chronically malnourished and could therefore be at risk.

A functioning primary health system has six features.

Adequate funding.Good facilities located in the right places.Skilled and dedicated health workers.Ample stocks of essential equipment and medicines.Patients who know about the system and want to use it.And a mechanism for collecting the data needed to improve quality.

I believe the Nigerian primary health care system is not adequately funded. But it also doesn’t get the most out of its current funding. I want to re-emphasize that last point about data. More transparency would lead to more accountability, which would strengthen governance, leadership, and management, which would improve quality across the board.

I visited a health clinic in Bodinga LGA in Sokoto yesterday, and it reminded me why I do this work. I’d like to ask all of you to spend one hour at a health center in the next month. I think you’ll see how the system can be improved—and how much good it will do when it is.

I know Nigeria can build up its primary care system, because I’ve seen what you accomplish when you meet health challenges head on.

As many of you know, we’ve been very close partners in your fight against polio.

As you can see on this graph, the hard work of hundreds of thousands of local leaders and health workers since the turn of the millennium has paid off. Nigeria has not had a case of wild polio virus in more than a year.

?But the graph also shows that you’ve reported zero cases before, only to learn that the disease was still circulating in tiny pockets hidden by insecurity. It would be catastrophic to let your guard down when you’re on the verge of eliminating the disease once and for all.

I believe—because I have seen your work in the field as recently as yesterday—that you will do what it takes to end polio in Nigeria. We will be here, working side by side with you, until you do.

?Though health is our foundation’s primary area of expertise, it’s not the only thing we do, and it’s not the only thing I mean when I say Nigeria should invest in its people. Healthy people need opportunities to thrive.

One of the most important of these opportunities is agriculture, the sector that nourishes most Nigerians and supports half the population, especially the poorest.

The agricultural sector is a pillar of the Nigerian economy. It accounts for a large proportion of your GDP, and during the oil price collapse and recession, it helped cushion the economy. But it still has a lot of potential to grow.

?The majority of Nigerian smallholder farmers lack access to the seeds, fertilizer, and training they need to be more productive, and they lack access to the markets they need to profit from their labor.

The government has taken important steps to fill these gaps, with both more investment and a series of smart policies to encourage private sector investment.

These reforms lay the foundation for a booming agricultural sector that feeds the country, helps end chronic malnutrition, and lifts up tens of millions of smallholder farmers. I urge you to build on this good work.

?One of the barriers that continues to prevent smallholders from thriving is their lack of access to finance. Like good roads, finance connects farmers to opportunity, yet only 4 percent of Nigerian farmers currently have a loan to grow their business.

In a country where three quarters of people have mobile phones, digital financial services provide a solution to this problem. In fact, digital finance offers the potential to boost the economy from top to bottom.

Right now, more than 50 million Nigerian adults are at the whim of chance and the informal economy. With access to digital financial tools, they can cope better with disasters that threaten to wipe them out, build assets and a credit history, and gradually lift themselves out of poverty.

Consider the impact this would have on businesses. Of the 37 million micro, small, and medium enterprises in Nigeria, more than 99 percent are micro. Their lack of access to finance is a leading reason why these businesses can’t grow. With digital payments, savings, and credit, they will finally have the resources to plan for the future.

?According to the best estimates, digital financial services will create a 12.4 percent increase in Nigeria’s GDP by 2025. Meanwhile, oil accounts for about 10 percent of Nigeria’s GDP. Imagine adding another oil sector and then some to the economy, but one whose benefits spread far and wide and reach almost every single Nigerian.

?There is another benefit to digital financial services that will make everything I’m urging you to do much easier: it will vastly improve the government’s ability to tax and spend efficiently.

Let me pause for a moment to say, I am confident that one thing you’ve been thinking as I’ve been talking is that, while you would like to spend more on health and nutrition and education and agriculture, you don’t have the money to do everything. I appreciate the fact that what you can spend is a function of what you raise.

Nigeria’s government revenue as a percentage of its GDP is by far the lowest in the world, at 6 percent. That makes investing in your people difficult. The next lowest country, Bangladesh, collects 10 percent of its GDP. If you got yourself up to second-to-last in the world, you would have an extra $18 billion to budget. Obviously, you’re aiming higher than that, but it gives you some idea about the scale we’re talking about.

?We want to support you in your work to mobilise more resources to invest in your country. That’s why our foundation is working with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to help states track internally generated revenue.

Ultimately, raising revenue to invest in growth will require delivering on the government’s commitments to the Nigerian people, and convincing them that they will get a return on their taxes.

Right now, Nigeria’s fiscal situation is at what you might call a low equilibrium. In return for low levels of service, people pay low levels of tax. We hope to help you reach a higher equilibrium rooted in effective and transparent investments in people. This equilibrium would trigger a virtuous cycle.

More government revenue would lead to more money to spend on health and education. Better health and education, and investment in sectors like agriculture, would lead to more productive farms and factories. More productive farms would lead to more prosperous farmers who could expand their farms or invest in other businesses, especially if they had access to credit and other financial tools. These thriving farms, factories, and new businesses would lead to more government revenue. And the cycle would start again.

Triggering that cycle will require bolder action—action you have the power to take as leaders, governors, and ministers focused on Nigeria’s future.

CONCLUSION

Nigerians are known around the world for their big dreams and big ambitions.

Together with the Dangote Foundation, we will be here to help you achieve your dreams and ambitions. You have the support of the international community. The Nigerian private sector will continue to invest. We are eager to help, but we know we can’t lead. You must lead.

I believe in the grand vision of Nigeria’s future. I believe in it because I’ve seen it. It’s represented by this line—the line that depends on healthy, educated people and the surge of economic activity they will unleash.

?And that means that the future depends on all of you—and your leadership in the years to come.

Following the release of about 101 Dapchi school girls kidnapped by Boko Haram today, the Governor of Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has congratulated parents of the children. He also sympathized with parents of five of the girls that reportedly died.

The Governor however described the abduction of the girls as an indictment of the federal government and their release as “drama scripted by the government and its agents to swindle Nigerians.”

According to The Independent, Fayose, while reacting to the release of the abducted school girls, said; “This appears like an arranged abduction and an arranged release, but we thank God that the innocent girls have returned home and we condole with parents of those that died.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said it was strange that the girls could be brought back to Dapchi by their abductors without the security agents knowing when they were returned and who returned them.

He said: “Curiously, the same spirit who made sure that all military checkpoints in Dapchi and other surrounding towns were removed to pave way for the abduction of the girls also made sure that the girls were returned without any security agent seeing them.

“One can only be hopeful that the real scriptwriters behind this drama will be exposed one day.

“Nigerians should recall that the Governor of Yobe state, Ibrahim Geidam said that military checkpoints were withdrawn from Dapchi and other communities a few days before the abduction of the 110 girls.”

This was also corroborated by the Amnesty International in its report that was published in the newspapers yesterday.

“Specifically, Amnesty International said that security forces failed to act on advance warnings that a convoy of Boko Haram fighters was heading to Dapchi town and that between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm on February 19, 2018, calls were made to tell the security services that the Boko Haram insurgents were in the Dapchi area.

“No doubt, withdrawal of military checkpoints from Dapchi and other communities, few days before the 110 students were abducted and failure of the security forces to act on advance warnings exposed the conspiracy of the federal government and its agents in the abduction of the schoolgirls and other dastardly acts of the insurgents.

“Interestingly, no one was questioned up till now despite conflicting claims by the army and police as well as the damning report by the Amnesty International hat between 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm on February 19, 2018, calls were made to tell the security services that the Boko Haram insurgents were in the Dapchi area.”

The governor, who reiterated his allegation that Boko Haram insurgency had become source of treasury looting said: “Those benefiting from Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) scams, payment of ransom (in dollars) to free those abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents, among others will never wish to see the end of the insurgency.”
