Chad’s President Idriss Deby has said Boko Haram is no longer led by the fearsome Abubakar Shekau and that his successor is open to talks. Deby made the revelation Tuesday while addressing reporters in the capital N’Djamena on the 55th anniversary of Chad’s independence AFP) reported yesterday. He did not say what had happened to Abubakar Shekau, but said he had been replaced by Mahamat Daoud - who has not been heard of before. “There is someone apparently called Mahamat Daoud who is said to have replaced Abubakar Shekau and he wants to negotiate with the Nigerian government. “For my part, I would advise not to negotiate with a terrorist,” he said. He added: “Boko Haram is decapitated. There are little groups (of Boko Haram ) scattered throughout North-East Nigeria, on the border with Cameroon. It is within our power to definitively overcome Boko Haram. “The war will be short, with the setting up of the regional force, it will be over by the end of the year,” Deby added, referring to a new five-country force aimed at ending Boko Haram’s six-year insurgency. He added that the force would be “operational in a few days”. Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria have all pledged troops towards the new force. While claiming progress against the insurgents, who have repeatedly hit border areas of Cameroon, Chad and Niger, and wrought havoc in northeast Nigeria, Deby admitted that suicide bombers still posed a threat. In the past few weeks, suicide bombers, many of them women, have staged several attacks in Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad. The challenge, Deby said, was to “avoid terrorist acts and that’s why we must organise at the regional level to prevent bomb-making materials and other explosives entering our countries.” He said the efforts to comb through Boko Haram insurgents had succeeded in “decapitating” the group and would be wrapped up “by the end of the year”. It has been noted however that this is not the first time that reports have emerged claiming Shekau’s demise. Reports from the Nigerian military and the media have declared him dead on several occasions, although experts also believe that the various videos that have appeared purporting to be him sometimes featured lookalikes. The Chadian leader was said to have brokered peace talks with Boko Haram but the negotiations never really happened and were widely seen as a sham. Defence spokesman Colonel Rabe Abubakar yesterday told Daily Trust that whether there is a new Boko Haram leader or not, would not deter the military in its counter terrorism operations. Colonel Abubakar emphasized that the tempo and nature of military operations at the flash points of terrorism activities in the north east will be maintained. “We will continue to dominate the area and conduct our counter terrorism operations until we rid the country of terrorists,” he stated.http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/news/news/don-t-negotiate-with-b-haram-chad-leader/106182.html

Cameroonian authorities have ordered all mosques and Islamic centres to be shut in northern parts of the country. The decision was said to be part of a set of measures intended to increase security after several terror attacks in the region, triggered by the country’s war on Boko Haram. In addition to the closures, young beggars were ordered to vacate the streets as all recent suicide bombers have been children. According to the OnIslam website and fox news, the governor of the region Midjiyawa Bakari, said the new rules were a response to two incidents in the past week, referring to two suicide attacks by two girls which resulted in killing 31 and wounding tens of people. Though no group claimed responsibility for the attacks, fingers were pointed as militant group Boko Haram. Muslims constitute about 20 percent of Cameroon’s total population of 20.5 million. Most of them live in northern Cameroon and hail from major tribes such as the Fulani and the Peuhl. Last week, the Cameroonian authorities banned the use of veil among women after two women dressed in the religious garments blew themselves up on Sunday in Fotokol, killing 13 people. The militant group says it is fighting enemies who have wronged its members through violence, arrests or economic neglect and corruption. More than 13,000 people are thought to have died since Boko Haram began its insurgency in 2009. Boko Haram has escalated its six-year-old campaign to impose Islamic law on Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy and largest oil-producing nation. The fighting has drawn in neighboring countries including Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon, as the militants broadened their border targets.http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/187365-boko-haram-cameroonian-authorities-shut-mosques-islamic-centres.html |
The Nigerian Army is considering setting up of a special force that will use motorcycles to check the activities of terrorists. The new battalion, when established will complement efforts of the ground troops. LEADERSHIP learnt that the Motorcycle Battalion will be a special unit out of the initiative of the army chief, Major General Tukur Buratai, in his efforts to wipe out Boko Haram within the shortest possible time. LEADERSHIP further learnt that the new military high command brought up the idea as it had become evident that troops were finding it difficult to penetrate terrorists’ hideouts using military vehicles, especially in the dreaded Sambisa Forest. Reports point that it is difficult pursuing the terrorists in some parts of the North East as a result of the topography being a muddy area and this hinders the movement of the troops. The troops in this contemplated motorcycle unit would be selected for training in the use of customized bikes and they will now be playing complementary roles to the ground troops. The motorcycle battalion is usually a quick-fix corps of soldiers who perform all the duties of a reconnaissance battalion. It is an assault battalion, which seeks out an enemy soft spot and launches attacks. The Germans, Britons and Americans have dedicated motorcycle battalion corps that backstop their regular armies. Historically, motorcycle battalions included an armored car company and several companies of motorcycle infantry. The motorcycle infantry companies were organized as assault squads around several motorcycles with sidecars that carried lethal weapons during the World War II. At this time of the year (rainy season), the topography of the North East is heavily muddy and impassable for heavy vehicles. After his visit to Yobe, Adamawa and Borno states during the Sallah break, the COAS sieved from the various briefings by the relevant commanders that an ingenious move had to be made to demobilize the insurgents who bomb crowded markets and towns and race back to the forests. LEADERSHIP reports that the emergence of President Buhari has sent strong signals to the terrorists that their days are numbered. In his recent US trip, the president was promised a lot of support and assistance from the Obama administration, and with the new service chiefs in place, our source disclosed that the end of terrorism is now in sight. “President Buhari has received tremendous support from President Barack Obama as witnessed in his official trip to the United States and you would recall that prior to the trip, the president had replaced the service chiefs he inherited from former President Goodluck Jonathan with a view of repositioning the military for what is regarded as the last phase of the battle.” For armies struggling to find sufficient motor transport, the motorcycle battalion provides a cheap fix to making units mobile.http://leadership.ng/news/449954/war-on-terror-army-to-establish-motorcycle-battalion
