A group of hackers from Nigeria have crashed several Nigerian Government websites and are threathening to attack, Banks, Telecom etc http://technolog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/05/26/6723108-nigerian-hackers-hit-their-own-government http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2011/05/27/technology-af-nigeria-hackers_8488091.html http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=13701552 |
I believe most responders to the well articulated question posed by the author seem to have either chosen to interject tribal jingoisms or simply ignored the question and drifted to expected responses based on tribal sentiments. I am of the opinion that what the author was trying to say are these: (1) Igbo women have done well and continue to excel in whatever they do. They should be emulated by others. (2) Yoruba women, "it's time to catch up. Your primary competitors are leaving you". This is a call to arms for you. (3) The northern women, though huge in numbers have very little to show. (but same can be said of the men, sadly) (4) Finally I think, he is saying, Igbo women, don’t get complacent, your competitors are watching. Love or hate the Igbos, they are an enigma that should be copied and emulated. The fact that they are where they are today after a devastating war tells a lot about them. In my opinion, what other should be doing is trying to find out what makes the Igbos tick and attempt to beat them at their own game. The Japanese did same to Americans and the Chinese are now doing same. So don't bash the Igbos, rather attempt to out do them if you can. I believe, the Igbos for whatever reason believe they are born with their backs against the wall. This may help explain why they are hell bent on succeeding and excelling. In fact, Ojukwu used this to lead his folks to fight to the last man standing. There was a guy on Radio Biafra Okon Okon Ndem, who used to begin his broadcasts by reminding the Igbos that "he who is surrounded by enemies is on perpetual guard , " (Maybe Igbo folks on this trade can speak more on this). As for those that are defending the subjugation of women and in fact the entire populace by a few elite from the core North, I think we are doing a great dis-service to ourselves. The fact that Imo State in the East produces more University Graduates than the entire North should be a cause for worry and shame. In fact, left alone, 2 Igbo states, Imo and Abia can fill the the entire University allocations in the country. Instead of building Universities and colleges, we build Koranic schools and what have you. Even the universities that we have are populated and filled with, surprise, children of people with Igbo ancestry. While the majority of our kids are out begging, the Igbos are out getting education and what have you. We should praise our women no matter where they come from in Nigeria if they are doing well, and it just happens that they are Igbo, fine and well. The question we should be asking is, what are the others going to do to dethrone the Igbos if we can, or catch up with them? But it must also be remembered that Igbo women have been at the forefront from the get go. It was Igbo women who started the independence drive in Aba by engaging the mighty British army in what they derisively call, Aba women’s riot. So their over-achieving is nothing new. But the Igbos should not be beating their chest, because this is a global phenomenon. Even in the America, women are out-performing men in many fields. If the playing fields are leveled in America, women will take over. Despite all their chest beating, women in America still remain second class citizens and only gained the rights to vote not too long ago. So, find a woman who has done well and encourage your daughters to strive to be like them, I think that is the best gift you can give them and if they happen to be igbo, so be it. |
Here is an interesting question by a respected Nigerian, can you help answer the question? http://www.modernghana.com/news/323651/1/between-igbo-yoruba-and-other-nigerian-women.html |
Bialegend:Idiots are people like you who call people they have not and may NEVER meet, names and you sound like an uneducated slowpoke to me. Intelligent people do not resort to name calling to argue their points. Though I am not from the North, what makes you believe that you are civilized and Northerners are primitive? Can you define civilization and tell us why you are civilized and Northerners are not? Don't you see what you are, a bigoted, self centered, irrational slowpoke devoid of any logical thinking? revmallam |
tunku:To answer your question, well I can not pack up and leave because, that would be foolish of me because I have a lot of investments here in US but I also have lots of investments in Nigeria. Though I live in the US, Nigeria is always a flight away and it will remain that way for the foreseeable future for me. So let me ask you, why do we have more than 800,000 Americans in Nigeria or almost 1.5 million Indians or 1 million Chinese , British etc in Nigeria? Are these people not from "paradise" in your opinion? Fact is, people like you will only see the negative and whine and complain, but others, including these immigrants I mentioned see opportunities. Each time I arrive in Nigeria, what I see is opportunities to make money while people like you whine and complain. Nigeria is NOT perfect. Nigeria has lots of problems, so do the US, Britain and those countries you praise. Have you visited Alabama, Lousiana and most of the US states outside of the Big ones? I was recently in Los Angeles, and believe it or not, there beggars all over the place. The truth is, once you go outside the big cities of the US, and go past the shiny towers, rural US is not very different from rural Nigeria. They have private wells, Out houses(shit holes or toilets), unpaved holes etc. So you can believe what you want, but I had a job that allowed me to travel around the US and I know what I saw and have pictures to prove it. Ask anyone honest enough and they will confirm it, just don't ask those that have spent all their time in the big cities and paint unrealistic pictures that don't really exist. YES, Nigeria is NOT perfect, but it is an Investor's dream. By the way, CNBC the largest financial Network here in the US has been running a show on Investing in Nigeria and the huge rewards. These shows have been on now for the past week, so believe what you want, but the facts are that, perfection is an illusion and those things you mentioned happen in other countries too. Did you know that Iran, the second largest Oil producer in the world Imports Petrol and rations it? The way people like you have, it only happens in Nigeria. Revmallam |
Greetings, I am a Nigerian, but I don't live in Nigeria. I have spent most of my adult live abroad in the so called developed world. I can tell you that you hit the nail on the head. But as the saying goes, we always think the grass is greener on the other side. In my opinion and based on what I have seen in USA and Britain and a host of other countries I have been to, the primary problem facing Nigeria is attitude and gross mis-information. Those who compare Nigeria to Ghana and other tiny countries are either disingenuous or have never left their backyards, but until we change our attitude, we will keep on believing the grass is greener on the other side. Even with our epileptic power supply, no African country compares to Nigeria and I don't live in Nigeria, but I have been around. cheers, revmallam |
@walata44 You got it all wrong my friend. I don't know anyone who works for the government and I don't want to. I am not pro any government and believe only Nigerians can solve their own problems . I don't need "a seal of approval" from anyone to promote Nigerians\Nigeria. I don't even live in Nigeria for that matter, but I visit home on a regular basis. However, as a Nigerian I am sick and tired of people like you who shoot down any attempt to promote Nigeria and Nigerians. In the office I work in, there are six other Nigerian Software engineers and we all believe people like you are doing a great disservice to Nigeria professionals by portraying them as incompetent by branding all Nigerians as people like you do. You dwell in, and promote negativity. You continue to perpetuate the myth of pristine worlds in far away countries, never mind that those countries have same problems as Nigeria, only difference is, their citizens are not trumpeting it. Tent cities are springing up here in the USA, but you don't hear Americans dwell on it. Contrary to what people like you believe, nobody really cares about your problems because everybody got one. Those who dwell in the negativity, never see beyond failures !! reavmallam |
My sentiments exactly !! Fact is, the Delta region gets more federal allocation than any other part of the country. Problem is, the money is pocketed by their own folks and then they blame everyone else and kidnap innocent people. All those calling on the military to stop are hypocrites ! They should not, till they finish off the criminal, then arrest all the former billionaire governors from the delta region. revmallam |
AjaraEwuro:In about 2 weeks, we will be launching a counter TRUELY Pro Nigeria website. I am fed up with Nigeria bashing and I ttrulybelieve and know that Nigerians are honest and decent people who are being ruined and damaged in the media by mostly Nigerians abroad and at home. Yes, we have our own share of bad apples, but show me a nation without one and I will show you a nation that does not exist. Stay Tuned. Revmallam |
Perhaps the the end is near. According a news being reported the "militants" are tired of fighting and will be giving up soon. http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200905310827DOWJONESDJONLINE000324_FORTUNE5.htm Personally, I have always believed that they should be attacking the governors from the Delta states who stole their federal allocations andnot the federal government. Having said that, what has kidnapping, school children, old men and women, foreigners got to do with anything? Revmallam |
AjaraEwuro:The worst is even our so called Newspapers are included. Rueben Abati of the Guardian is the worst Nigeria basher. The Punch is not far behind. Nigeriaworld.com is nothing but a gathering place for Nigeria haters. Infact, I cannot think of any Nigeria medium Print or Digital that is pro Nigeria. Nairaland calls itself a place for , friends of Nigeria, , but the truth is that 89% of all posts on most of the thread are Nigeria Bashing. It is rather sad, but stay tuned, true lovers of Nigeria are working to counter this declared war, soon. revmallam |
Glad you are asking same question I asked 4 weeks ago https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=254820.msg3661023#msg3661023 The truth is that all the complainers have done NOTHING even in their own villages, yet they blame the "government". While other people are using the internet to market their countries, Nigerians, from high to the very bottom are using the web to see who will tell the worst story about Nigeria. Contrary to the slogan of this forum , friends of Nigeria , , it has become a gathering place for Nigeria haters and bashers. At the rate it is going, it will soon overtake "Nigeriaworld" as the worst gathering place for Nigeria bashing. Like the other poster said, if you want following on any Nigerian medium, bash Nigeria. What a shame !! Revmallam |
Over the past weeks, Nigeria has been on the biggest Financial News Networks over here in the USA, CNBC and Bloomberg. I am not talking about the ND crap. I am talking about making money. Now that America is broke, they are looking for where else to make money and Africa but particularly Nigeria is the place to be according to wealthy Americans. CNBC the biggest Financial news network was in Nigeria doing a live Brodcast that was beamed back over here over several days. Watch video segments here http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=1130168928&play=1 http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=1130168949&play=1. Along the way, they interviewed the Nigerian toilet king who happens to be the biggest portable toilet exporter in Africa. Again, let all those waiting for the Government to create jobs keep waiting while those that are serious make money. Governments don't create jobs. People do. Revmallam |
Nigeria today signed agreements to buy initially 25 Locomotives with the option to buy up to 75 from American company General Electric [GE] The agreement also includes GE providing Power generation engines and turbines to Nigeria. The Vice Chairman of GE was on TV overhere being interviwed and gave details. GE already has 200 employees in Nigeria Details here http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601116&sid=aQJGft.B0nlY&refer=africa Revmallam |
PapaBrowne:HERE IS THE PROFILE of "becomerich" --------------------------------------------------- According to a software that I use for various analysis, I decided to build a profile of "becomerich" and here is what the software says. Please note that the software engine is based on pattern matching. (a) He is neither a Nigerian nor a Yoruba man and is probably NOT even African. (b) Based on syntax errors in his writings, the software believes he recently learned to write English , about 8 years ago. (c) The software believes he is from somewhere in Eastern Europe. (d) The software believes he is a loner and probably a sadist. (f) The software believes he is a member of a Nazi group in Eastern Europe. He claimed he campaigned for some politicians where he lives, the software believes he is likely to be seen in a rally for an Ultra right wing candidate or Nazi rally. If he lived in America, he is more likely to be seen in a KKK rally. Again, the software I used is pattern based, but it has been very accurate in the past, so I believe it is again. So now that we have or may have a clearer picture of this fellow, the best thing is to ignore him. |
PapaBrowne:I am very happy, this thread has pricked the conscience of most of us. My dear friend, in my profession, we say that any problem can be solved if it is properly defined. The problem we have in Nigeria and most of Africa is that we have not properly defined our problems, rather, we have allowed foreigners to define us and allocate what problems they deem fit to assign to us. Interesting, you mentioned some of the things Nigeria has given to all of us, BUT I will address this in a future thread. But now that you have identified the oversight on your part, here is my advice, start small, pick a venture, be it any of those that you mentioned, but, get started and watch your personal satisfaction of seeing your handiwork change a life. There will be pitfalls, but DO NOT be discouraged. We should all be on a mission to take back our country but we can only do it if we get started and the time is NOW !! Good luck and go change your community one person at a time. revmallam |
tpia:Actually, the top tax rate is currently 35% HOWEVER, under Obama plan, it will go up to 39.6 % by 2010 which was the rate under Bill Clinton. Infact combined, Americans pay an average of 45% of their income in taxes. This includes, real estate and purchase taxes and various other taxes imposed by various municipalities. Take a look at what has been added to your phone bill, water bill, gas bill, trash bill. I have one in my water bill called "Homeland security surcharge". But as he correctly pointed out, if you become super rich, you avoid taxes via various shelters. revmallam |
MandingoII:I suppose you live in the US. If that is the case, then, they actually take your money and make Water, electricity, good roads etc, available so YOU CAN THEN PAY to use them. Infact, electricity, water, etc are owned and ran by mostly private entities in the US. So contrary to the lies being perpetuated by the likes of "becomerich" and CNN and BBC propaganda beamed to the developing world, there's no free ride in the USA. Yes, the items he mentioned are there for you to use AT A COST !! Yes, I agree with you about internatonal Mob Fund (imf) and Oil companies in association with some visionless individuals being in charge and that's why I say we MUST change. Only when people can fend for themselves can they challenge the status quo !! revmallam |
My dear friends, please IGNORE this individual "becomerich". After reviewing his other posts in several threads, I have built a profile that tells me HE IS NOT what he claims to be. Can we PLEASE continue with the subject at hand? No point in elevating mediocrity or intellectual frauds. revmallam |
Becomrrich:OK, let's assume that you currently live in "Shangri-la" or "Hell" for the sake of assumptions. Now, will you be kind enough to tell us what you have contributed to Shangri-la or how you have contributed to making "Hell" a cooler place? "Hell" may not be all that bad, if it can be changed. So assume Nigeria does not exist, what have you contributed to humanity ? revmallam |
Omonla:He is clearly part of the problem we have in Nigeria. We seem to have a generation hell bent on blame, blame, blame, complain, complain complain, BUT ask them to contribute in anyway, all you get is more blame, blame, +++++. I have asked him in several posts, to remove Nigeria as the country and tell us what he has done or contributed to his community, but all has accomplished so far is deviate from the topic and obfuscate the obvious. AGAIN I Will ASK you "Becomerice", WHAT HAVE YOU CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR COMMUNITY? Whereever it is? (notice I am yelling !) revmallam |
Pataki:I have told him in very subtle ways that he is part of the problem, but he does not seem to get the message. !! To your point, although I was not educated (other than primary and secondary schools) in Nigeria, I do personally believe that NYSC should not be abolished. I am of the opinion that it should be expanded or modified. It exposes most of us and serves as a very important conduit to exposing some of us to the myriad of cultures that make up Nigeria. I am of these opinions because Nigeria being a diverse nation, some of us will not have the opportunity to explore the country if not for NYSC. I once dated a girl from Jos and that gave me the chance to visit that city and see things for myself. You can say that NYSC serves similar purpose (OK, minus the girl !), but you get the idea. Even USA has a similar program but theirs is called by various names including the Peace Corps, but the only difference is that it is not mandatory. The Obama administration has introduced a new version in which university graduates will have their college loans forgiven if they teach in troubled schools in the nation. So as you can see, it is same concept. revmallam |
yousouph:I NEVER miss a chance to tell people that I am a Nigerian and I also know many people who do that on a daily basis. Even looking at this board, you will notice that most people here are reverently Nigerians. I always tell people who don't want to be associated with Nigeria because of the issues you pointed out to look in the mirror and then ask themselves, have I personally committed any of the crimes? If the answer is no, then tell the person who objects to go to hell if they don't like it. I believe if your hands are clean, you owe no one any apologies. America has the worlds prison population, but we will be mistaken to brand all Americans as criminals THEY ARE NOT. The problem we have is that we have allowed others on CNN, BBC, Western media to define us !! At my age and where I am in life, I will consider myself a failure if I can not express what I feel. I don't know how old you are, but I believe at any age, you should be able to do same economic standing not withstanding. revmallam |
Becomrrich:You are NOT discussing the subject, BUT if you believe that the Yoruba's Bendel, etc are better off outside Nigeria, then why not get enough people together and have them to buy into your vision? You will however see, that when you get to where ever you call your new country, the subject of this thread still applies. AGAIN, I ask you, WHAT HAVE YOU CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR COMMUNITY IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE ? Will you live your entire life being a leech? Living off things contributed by others? How really do you want to be remembered ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ??revmallam |
yousouph:Believe it or not, it is really easier to make money in Nigeria than to make money in say, US or Britain. The reason being that you can start very small in Nigeria, but to start a viable business in US, you need real money and then, there's the gazillion rules and regulations to abide by. The problem we have in Nigeria is that those that want to start small don't even have the small amount to get started and that's where this thread comes in. Could I have done better if I stayed in Nigeria? Looking back I think so, but then again, hindsight is always 20/20. I say this because, I have friends in Nigeria who never left Nigeria doing just as well and even better than me. Then I have some who have not even gotten started. So as you said, all fingers are NOT created equal and we all can NOT be kings, meaning not all of us will succeed no matter how hard we try. All things considered, and adjusting for currency valuations, it is my opinion that Nigerians doing well abroad would have done in Nigeria. revmallam |
pureminded:HURRRAAAA !!! Glad this topic has pricked your conscience. Now, go and get involved. REMEMBER, only send money to your OLD parents and the needy. For others, show them how to grow money. START VERY SMALL. revmallam |
ode remo:If you believe that view to be better, why not find a few people and change their perspectives? Martin Luther King changed America, Ghandi India, Mandela, SA. One they all had in common was that they had a vision and sold it. Chances are you can ADD your name to the list. It is NOT easy but you can do it. revmallam |
blacksta:It really depends on who you are sending the money to. I preach against sending money to anyone EXPECT your old and aged parents, the very young and those with proven needs. Sending money to young people only expands the perception that money grows on trees abroad, and later morphs into a belief that you owe it to them. What I personally do is send money that CAN ONLY BE USED TO GROW MORE MONEY. That is, show me that you can grow money and I will help you plant the tree. Why did I decide on this you ask? Well, I realized that I have sent a total of 4 million naira, purchased 4 vehicles etc for my folks, but they wanted more and were not growing it. So I changed the rules, and I am glad I did. So I only send money that MUST be invested because, if you TEACH them how to fish, they will fish for themselves. revmallam |
Nemeziz9ja:Trust me, among those youths, one is a potential leader and if you look carefully, you will sport them out very quickly. Once you find one, work with them, by selling them your vision. One thing I have found is that it is easier to convince those that are not doing very well that they can do better if they see that you the teacher is doing well by following the vision you are selling. Don't start with your family it may fail. I started with a total stranger who gave me a ride in his motorbike, inaga. revmallam |
lucabrasi:SAD is it NOT? Sure, I am expecting that, but I am comparing the responses here to what I already have from other sources. Accounting for standard deviations, the results are as I expected. The loudest complainers have contributed ZERO to their local communities. Sad, but true. revmallam |
texazzpete:CHEERS and please SPREAD your message !! revmallam |
Becomrrich:As I said before, your assertions are misleading but you seem bent on perpetuating this myth of perfection in far away lands. Contrary to your assertions, no state in the US can break away or declare themself a country. When the Southern region of the US tried it, it led to the American civil war of 1861. When was the last time you filed your taxes in the US? Please take a closer look at your 1040 documents or visit the IRS website. Here what to do, next time you fill up your gas tank in America, look closely at the gas pumps or ask the clerk or better yet, why not visit the websites of any state and check out the revenue sources? I will assume that you have intentionally refused to answer or I can reasonably conclude that you have done absolutely nothing for the betterment of your community, because you believe your community has done nothing for you. This is sadly tragic and is exactly the problem. So let's say You don't want to do anything for Nigeria because Nigeria has done nothing for you, then, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE OR CONTRIBUTED to where you call home? Please NOTHING personal, but it seems to me, you are intentionally spreading misleading information, (reminds me of FOX news networks) revmallam |
