United States (U.S.)Ambassador to Nigeria James Entwistle has said there is no sign Nigeria will disintegrate this year. He denied knowledge of any American government report predicting the country’s collapse. The ambassador, who condemned the gun attacks on All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters in Rivers State, spoke in Lagos yesterday. He said: “I have been plagued by that question ever since I got this job. I have gone back and looked, I can’t find any government report that said we thought Nigeria would disintegrate in 2015, may be some think-tank or somebody outside the government said it, I don’t know. But, in my opinion as U.S. Ambassador to this country, I am not worried in the least that Nigeria is going to disintegrate in 2015. Do you face big challenges now? Of course you do. So does my country. But, I see a Nigeria that if you can do what needs to be done in the coming years on security, on corruption and all of those things, I think the future for Nigeria is very bright. Whenever I travel around this country, I always try to go to the universities and have big sessions to give talks to students and have questions and answers and whenever I do that, I leave with incredible sense of optimism about Nigeria when I get to know your best and brightest. So, are there challenges for Nigeria under the horizon? Sure, but I have no doubt that Nigeria will muscle them, will move on. Will it be easy? Of course not. Nothing is easy in this life… We are now here in 2015, I don’t know what you see but I can’t see those signs that Nigeria will disintegrate. I see signs of growth and I say that not to minimise the challenges that you have.” He also described as ‘nonsense’ the allegation that his country has imposed arms embargo on Nigeria. Entwistle told reporters that no country has assisted Nigeria in its war against terror more than the U.S., adding that the insistence on the respect for human rights should not be interpreted to mean arms embargo. He also faulted the claim that U.S. has refused to sell Cobra helicopters to Nigeria to aid the war against terror. He said: “In terms of what is happening in the Northeast and military relationship, we have all seen in recent months a lot of stuff about the U.S. imposing an arms embargo, I am here to tell you as President Obama’s personal representative to this country that that is nonsense; that is not true. “We have given this ship, NNS Okpabana; we have a number of discussions on the way right now. A good portion of the assistance we give every day on the war against terror are things I can’t talk about that much, but I can assure you that no partner is doing more to assist Nigeria in its fight against terror now than the United States of America. We have seen the most unfortunate incident in Baga and that underlines to me the importance of continuing this fight.” Speaking on the Nigerian Army’s abrupt termination of a training arrangement with the U.S. Army, Entwistle said it was painful to the U.S. that it was called off despite the resources his country had put into it. He added that the army was supposed to provide the equipment for the training but failed to before it called it off. Entwistle said: “We are still talking about a number of equipment, different kinds of helicopters that can be more appropriate to that kind of thing. But, what are our human rights considerations? When I got here about two years ago, there were discussions about the conduct of the Nigerian Army in the Northeast about the treatment of the civilian population. It was reported in your media. This is not something we came up with. Nigerians themselves were focusing on it. So, we have had a lot of discussions with the Nigerian Army about the need to, as you fight terror, you also have to protect the civilian population and keep them on your side. We have learnt the hard way in our own counter terrorism that if you lose the trust and support of the civilian population, you’ve lost everything. So, we have had that conversation. Indeed, much of the trainings that we’ve done with your army in the U.S. has focused on that kind of thing, effective leadership and how do you operate against an enemy that is hard to identify? That mixes into the civilian population, how do you fight that kind of enemy while at the same time respecting the civilian population? I am not a military man but it strikes me that this is a very difficult thing to do.” On the terminated training programme, he explained: “We had at Nigeria’s request agreed to train some battalion, in my opinion, some of the best trainers in the world. The agreement was that we would provide the trainers and the Nigerian Army would provide the equipment we need to properly conduct the training and that was agreed well ahead of time as part of our partnership. This was not something we were going to do for Nigeria; it was something we were going to do together as partners. We were able to do a bit of this and it got to a point where we were waiting for these equipment to be provided for us to finish the training, but the decision by the Nigerian government, as I understand it, was ‘no that is enough; we don’t want to finish this training’. Frankly, that was a disappointment to us given that we had provided that symbol of our commitment. As to what motivated your government, as to the reason, I don’t know. I will encourage you to put that question to them.” He condemned the violence in Rivers, saying: “The incident in Rivers was very sad. I condemned it, but that underlines to me why our campaign against violence is so important. “The U.S.’s position on the election is quite clear. For the past years, I have been talking about the importance of non-violence in the elections. I have been doing that and I have seen that the civil society and the Nigerian media have taken this up too. I even went to one or two of Tuface’s hip-hop concert ‘Vote, not fight’ campaign. So, that is the message the United States will continue to preach, especially to urge all candidates to probably commit themselves that they will not support or engage in violence before, during and after the elections. I think that is key in any democracy. “It has been interesting and I am talking about politicians on both sides, the big parties, sometimes when I bring this up, their response is: ‘I won’t initiate violence myself. I abhor violence but if the other guy starts it or if I am not happy with the results, then may be.’ But, my answer to them is: ‘I’m sorry that is not a non-violence pledge.’ A non-violence pledge means you won’t do it no matter what.” On small arms proliferation, he said: “I think small arms proliferation is something that is difficult to control because the arms are small. They are easy to smuggle. We think that in providing NNS Thunder and Okpabana, they can gradually help against that. But they can also help against the broader issue of security in the Gulf of Guinea, which is a trans-national issue. It affects all the countries of this region. It also affects foreign investments. Oil companies want to get forward, like deep water. Security is paramount. We think it can also help Nigeria’s struggle against oil theft and (illegal) oil bunkering. It is an array of issues in relations to our broad issue of security with Nigeria.” He said the U.S. is helping through trainings and intelligence to find the Chibok girls, adding that kidnappings in the Northeast have continued almost daily. “We will stand with Nigeria to fight this terror,” he said. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/u-s-no-sign-nigeriall-collapse-year/

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday replied his critics, lashing out at “elder statesmen making provocative statements that could could set the country ablaze”. He called them motor park touts. Dr. Jonathan did not mention the names of such statesmen. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has severally attacked Jonathan’s administration. He, last week, accused the government of squandering Nigeria’s foreign reserves. Former military president Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, in an interview, spoke of corruption, saying compared to what he reads, his regime, which many describe as “very corrupt” was a saint. Speaking while receiving the Northern Elders Council (NEC) at the Presidential Villa, Jonathan said: “Some people call themselves statesmen but they are not statesmen; they are just ordinary politicians. For you to be a statesman is not because you have occupied a big office before but the question is what are you bringing to bear? Are you building this country? Or are you a part of people who tell lies to destroy this country?” “To create enmity and make people who ordinarily would have been living together to fight themselves. Are you planning to set the country ablaze because you did not get that particular thing you want?” He went on: “At the appropriate time, Nigerians will know all of us, even though I know most of you know us but the younger ones do not know. Some people are hiding under some clogs, some big names and creating a lot of problems in this country.” “Making provocative statements in this country, statements that will set this country ablaze and you tell me you are a senior citizen. You are not a senior citizen you can never be; you are ordinary motor park tout. “Because if you are a senior citizen you will act like one. It is not because of the offices we occupy is by divine grace and providence that some of us occupy these offices. But what role are you playing to build this country?” The President noted that without peace and unity, there can never be development. He said: “I feel sad that our younger ones are beginning to see a Nigeria as if we are so divided. A Nigeria that a Muslim and a Christian cannot sit down together. I was told that even the driver of Tafawa Balewa was a Christian. Our people lived together in those days; why not now that we have even modern ways of life? “Our children leave us and go abroad, they stay together and do a lot of things together. But when we come back home, we begin to build walls; this is a southerner, this is a northerner, this is a Muslim, this is a Christian, this is a Yoruba man, this is an Hausa man, this is an Ijaw man, this is a Nupe man. Is that the way we are going to develop our country?” According to Jonathan, America is great because it is made up of various cultural groups and ethnic lines have been so weakened that people think only about America. He stressed that citizens of any country that begin to see themselves through their tribal enclaves cannot go anywhere. His words: “If today I’m sick, if the best doctor that can treat me is from Zamfara or Enugu or Ekiti, they will bring that doctor to treat me. They will not ask if that doctor is an Ijaw man, Ogbia or any other tribe. And until we get to that level where we begin to use people based on their competences, yes there must be spread in political appointment and so on.” Jonathan said that Nigeria will begin to develop when there is no discrimination based on primordial privileges. “And that is what we stand for. I will continue to plead with you because from all of your activities you have been advocating for that,” he told the elders. He also denied the allegation that he does not like Northerners. He said: “Some people say Jonathan hates the North. I have heard that statement and I use to ask Namadi Sambo, they say I hate the North, but you are here. I asked the National Security Adviser and my Principal Secretary the same thing. In fact, my Principal Secretary has been my friend since I was the deputy governor. I never knew I was going to come here as Vice President not to talk of President. “But I have known him since I was the deputy governor of Bayelsa State. My Chief Detail, Yusuf from Borno State has been with me since I was a deputy governor in Yenagoa and I see him as a good person and I have carried him along with me. So I had to ask, how can somebody wake up and say I hate the North?” He went on: “I used to tell Nigerians I come from the down trodden, what you call the Talakawas; I come from that level ….. And I said the only thing that can liberate an individual or a group of individuals is education. If I did not go to school, I wouldn’t have been here to talk to big people like this. “If you didn’t go to school, you wouldn’t have spoken the way you spoke; you would have looked for somebody to interpret. This is what I believe; I don’t play politics with it. It has been my policy that I don’t play politics with education.” “When I came on board I said even though as a country we have the policy on paper, every state must get a Federal Government university. Out of the 12 federal universities created, nine were in the North while three were in southern Nigeria. The only three states that had no federal university were Bayelsa, Ebonyi and Ekiti.” “Those who were in charge of the university establishment were not fair. For us to liberate ourselves we must go to school. If I hate the north would I have done that?” Jonathan added: “We talk about Almajiri’s education; we felt we must change. Luckily, I initiated it but now state governments are keying into it because I know that it was education that liberated me I would have been a local canoe builder like my father and grandfather.” “But I’m here because of education and I feel if we must liberate Nigerian children whether they are from Zamafara, Bayelsa, Kebbi and Delta they must be educated. I feel we must enter the north by aggression through education,” he said The President said that he was always sad hearing of school dropouts in the North. He said: “Today I saw a publication in Daily Trust showing projects that have been awarded by the Federal Government, the ones for the Northeast very small, Southsouth very many. I had to make photocopies and distributed to all the ministers and I asked, is it true this is how projects are skewed by this government because somebody wants to play politics?” “Because I am a president from the South I have taken all the projects to the South? And I said all the ministers must come up and tell me how the projects are being distributed across the country and if it is skewed, you must tell me why it is so. One of the ministers, the North and she is in charge of water resources, said that publication cannot be true because the Kasambila Dam alone, the value is more than the amount quoted in that paper.” “This is to show you how mischievous Nigerians are because you want to paint Jonathan bad. All lies that have been told about this government, I promise you that I am working with your son and I will not cheat any part of this country. ” “For the people who want to paint us in all kinds of color, we will explain to Nigerians. There are a lot of documentation we will show Nigerians.” he said The President promised that his administration would not exploit or cheat any part of the country. NEC Chairman Tanko Yakasai, who led the delegation, said that the Council believes in the peaceful co-existence of the country. http://thenationonlineng.net/new/jonathan-attacks-obasanjo/

Before thousands of cheering party faithful and ordinary folks, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari yesterday opened his campaign, with a promise to tackle corruption, fight insecurity and revive the economy. The former Head of State declared the level of corruption as “intolerable”, adding that the President Goodluck Jonathan administration must go. Also yesterday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Gen. Buhari said: “We have reached a stage where change has to come. PDP must go. Enough is enough.” The campaign took off at the 40,000-seating capacity Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Igwuruta, near the Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State. It was attended by over 100,000 people, who defied the scorching sun to join the singing, drumming and dancing. Bu the ceremony has a tinge of tragedy. As Gen. Buhari’s supporters were moving to the stadium from Asari-Toru (Kalabari) and Khana (Ogoni) Local Government Areas of Rivers State, thugs believed to be working for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shot at them. One person was critically injured and hospitalised. Police spokesperson Muhammad Kidaya Ahmad, who confirmed the incident, said the command was investigating the attack. House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, who is also the party’s governorship candidate in Sokoto State, said Nigerians did not deserve President Goodluck Jonathan, but a better leadership in Gen. Buhari. The Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, said members PDP believe in guns, but he and other APC members believe in God and man. Jonathan’s administration, he said, would not be able to protect Nigerians. APC National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who received PDP members, who defected to the APC at the event, after presenting the party’s flag to the Rivers governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, assured all that when elected as president, Gen. Buhari would tackle the Boko Haram insurgency, ensure discipline and regular electricity supply, provide security and wipe out corruption. Immediately after the rally, which was transmitted live on major television networks Gen. Buhari and members of his campaign team moved to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital. The Port Harcourt rally was attended by Gen. Buhari’s running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN; the party’s Deputy Chairman Chief Segun Oni; Rivers Chairman Chief Davies Ibiamu Ikanya; Amaechi’s wife Dame Judith; Peterside’s running mate, Honourable Asita and wife, Elima. Other dignitaries included Governors Babatunde Fashola (Lagos); Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun); Rochas Okorocha (Imo); and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano); former Ekiti Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi and Mr. Audu Ogbeh. Also there were Senators Chris Ngige and Olorunnimbe Mamora; APC’s governorship candidate in Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai; former Ekiti Governor Niyi Adebayo, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who later joined the Masters of Ceremonies (MCs); and an ex-Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, among other eminent personalities. Gen. Buhari said: “We congratulate the Governor of Rivers State (Amaechi) profusely for being the Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Organisation. I thank you very much for accepting the responsibility to work with our great party. “Amaechi has made enormous sacrifice. He earned it. He worked for it and I thank him for accepting it. He got it through a lot of hard work. The way Amaechi mobilises people shows that he is the right choice. “Let us make sure that our votes count. The problem we are facing today is the problem of security and economy. We have gathered competent hands to manage the economy and tackle insecurity. The level of corruption in Nigeria is intolerable and we will make sure we succeed in fighting corruption when we get there. I wish Nigerians the best of luck and we believe in one indivisible Nigeria. I appeal to you to mobilise yourselves to ensure that the end justifies the means. I also urge you to collect your PVCs (Permanent Voter Cards) to enable you to vote in order to bring in the change we have been talking about.” Amaechi was unsparing of President Jonathan, First Lady, Dame Patience, who is an indigene of Okrika in Rivers State and the PDP governorship candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike, who is the immediate past Minister of State for Education. Amaechi said: “I thank God for this opportunity. I never knew I would be governor. Today, I am governor by the grace of God. I have stayed in office till 2015. By this time last year, the men who thought they were God thought I would have been out of office. By this time last year, men had collected money to remove us from office, but the God we worship never allowed it to happen. Now, they are the people struggling. We told them there will be this time, when they will be looking for our votes. “I want to thank all of you and thank Rivers people, for accepting to make me your governor. I may not have been the best governor you have ever seen. I am not a perfect man at all, because I am human. “When we came, we addressed insecurity. In the past, we could not have had our rally here. We are gradually going back to that. I hear today that members of the APC from Asari-Toru and Khana Local Government Areas (of Rivers State) were shot at on their way to this place (Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium). The PDP members believe in guns. We believe in God and man. We shall stand and face their bullets. We shall stand and face their guns. The fact that they shot you brings to the fore the argument we put forward that currently, the government in power cannot protect you and I. If the government could protect you and I, why were we shot at? Who bought guns for those people, who shot at our members? “I’m assuring you as your governor that I will continue to stand by you. They will do nothing, if we all stand together. You know the story of the broom. You can break a broom. You cannot break them when they are together. That is why APC has brought the symbol of a broom to our party. It is not enough to gather. Go and get your PVCs and vote for all APC candidates, beginning from Gen. Muhammadu Buhari; his vice; Rivers governorship candidate, Dakuku Peterside and his running mate Honourable Asita. We will make sure they win.” Tambuwal, who described Amaechi as the lion from the Delta, spoke of better life for Nigerians from May 29 when the candidates of the APC, especially Gen. Buhari, would be in office, through the massive votes of Nigerians and the grace of God. The speaker said: “When I defected to the APC (from the PDP last year), many people were surprised. With the privileged position as Speaker (of the House of Representatives) for three and a half years, we oversight the executive (arm of government). What we saw and are still seeing are mind-boggling. We do not deserve the kind of leadership we have at the centre. Nigeria deserves a better leadership in Buhari. His records speak for him. We are today bedevilled by insecurity and corruption. Nigerians should know where to cast their votes. “Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, by God’s grace, shall be inaugurated as Nigeria’s President on May 29, 2015. Nigerians will come out overwhelmingly to vote for all the candidates of the APC. “I am impressed by the large crowd (at the stadium). I wish to thank Governor Amaechi for making Dr. Dakuku Peterside the governorship candidate of the APC and Hon. Asita his running mate. They are currently members of the House of Representatives. This is a National Assembly project in Rivers State. We shall support them.” Odigie-Oyegun described as unimpressive, Jonathan’s performance. This, he said, has made change on May 29 imperative. He said: “The whole of Nigeria is jealous of Rivers State. This is the centre of change. General Buhari is a straightforward leader, strong in character, reliable and incurruptible. General Buhari and Prof. Osinbajo were carefully chosen. Hardwork pays and brings success. General Buhari was ahead of his time. His time has finally come.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/buhari-jonathan-must-go/
