Since you know about crypto, you could also have channeled your programing knowledge to Blockchain Dev. There are remote jobs that pays tangibly for junior roles. I could sense you are into cyber security or ethical hacking. That's not bad either, you may not make the dow faster like others, but you are on the right step already.
In the interim, connect with people on discord, telegram who are into the same stuff you are learning currently, you can see gigs through them if you are willing to earn. Nothing is impossible, you just need to be focused. Picking this skill today, dropping it for another tomorrow are part of a disoriented life.

About attending school, you already found UoP, it's a good place to be.

Hi guys, I have been thinking of enrolling into the ALX Software engineering mastercard sponsored program. Thing is, it is not self paced and not very beginners friendly too(no much time to get grounded enough in the basics as a beginner before proceeding to more advanced stuffs)
But yesterday while doing some research, I learnt Altschools Africa, is another platform
that offers and train people to become Software engineers. Thing is I'm not so sure how good/efficient(Altschool Africa) their SE programs are. Could you please share your thoughts guys. Give or take, Which of the programs (ALX or Altschools Africa) would you go for. Your contributions will be greatly helpful!🙏
Note: I actually don't intend to be a software engineer specifically. But was advised it's nice to ply the SE route before branching off into any other desired field.

It talks about RHEL 8 but is still super relevant for RHEL 9.

For virtualization that you mentioned, it sounds like you currently use Virtualbox. That is something that is rarely used in the enterprise environment. Look to learn VMWare Esxi or Proxmox. I have Proxmox as my homelab virtualization solution. VMWare is the most used enterprise solution, but it only has a time trial. So most homelab folks use Proxmox instead.

No issues. It's normal to feel a bit knowledgeable when you start learning. I too felt I knew everything until my first job I was asked to do a VLOOKUP. And I was just looking up to the ceiling whether Baba God will save me from the shame. You have the raw talent to be great. But understand that even the greatest no dey admit that they are great. At least all apart from Muhammad Ali.

Work on your craft. You can improve on your skill by studying materials for RHSCA. That command I asked you was what I was asked during a Linux interview. And I was talking about listing the files blah blah blah. RHSCA will enable you gain very sound entry level Linux knowledge that is applicable in the field.

As for programming, C is a tough language but it can be very rewarding. I don't code a lot these days but our core software, Freeswitch, was developed in C so from time to time I have to look at C code. I'd advise to look at C++ alongside C. And if that's the language you really have interest in, then start thinking about developing Linux drivers. Canonical, lead sponsors for Ubuntu Linux are always looking for C/C++ devs.

You just gave me something to work towards. (Developing Linux drivers) first time hearing of it. I'll conduct research on it. Honestly, I came here cus I got so confused which field to go into. I Know it will not be an easy one, but I pray for grace to put in the work courage to stand the test!
Once more thanks a lot oga!🙏 I'm not sure if there's still more in store for me, like a manual/route to structure and pattern my studies. (I personally thought of going more indepth in to Linux, like, shell scripting, networking services and system updates, disk management and runs level while combining it with the C language). I'm doing this all alone. knows nobody at all who is into programming in my locality, (emene, enugu state)....makes it very intimidating most time.

And note, NO ONE uses VirtualBox in real life. So all those you can bridge host to guest and vice versa, absolutely unused in real-life. People use VMware ESxi or Proxmox in real-life.

List the content of the working directory, including all hidden files (in long format) outputting the number of lines, the total words contained and also the characters in it. (Just brought the "ls -classify" command to my mind now🥰 which list but differentiate between, symbolic links, executable files directory's.) By adding some specific characters in form of (@, *, /) at the tail end of the listeds....Kind of an extension stuff, sort off....

Listen bro.... I'm not sure what 6 months is to you. But to me, it's a whole lot of time to gain flexibility in any field with enough determination.

Secondly I never said I am a master in the Linux OS....I only said I'm good enough...as a matter of fact... I'm so good with the OS beyond you could possibly think of!

Since you need lecturing, I wouldn't hesitate to grant you one:
In Linux, "ls" is a command (list Files) (everything in Linux is a file) "cd" into your "/bin" directory and see all your commands listed there as files which you can even "cat". "ls" is for listing of files.
The "-a" is used to display hidden files, + "L" (in small letter) allows it to be listed in long format including, bytes, time of creation, permissions names, and other few sh*ts.
The piping "|" symbol there is almost similar to the redirection symbol, only that with piping, the preceding command (right hand side, in this case "wc" wink

will only be read by the shell if the other "ls" returns a "zero exit status". That's is, if "ls" was valid and successful. (And also, "|" can not pipe its output to another file, that's not what it's meant for anyway).
Basically "wc" does the counting of the words "w" basically counts the words while "c" print out the bytes part.....I also included I have been doing "C" language right? So to clear your doubt, we use the "size_t" unsigned integer (keyword) alongside the"sizeof" function in "C" to printf out "bytes" why we use the the "strelen" function to count the characters.
Bro, I swear by this breath of life that I have, that I have never learnt or done any formal windows computer training before. Infact until this day, I know close to nothing about windows operation. Linux is my very first introduction to Anything OS/computer system..... I had no problem unlearning your clicking back and forth windows problem....I was learning it naturally as my very first OS.
I could go on and on to tell you more about it....I humbly tell you that I will floor you if you ever come into a competition with me in anything related to what I claim I know! (If you don't know your onions too) I don't boast in vain and pride. It cost blood and sweat and sleepless night. Once more, I am a comfortable Linux OS user!

Hi guys, kindly advise me pls 🙏
Between software engineering and mobile app development, which would you kindly recommend for me (I'm open for other suggestions as well). Thing is, I'm pretty new in programming/computer related stuff. But in the past 6 months I have managed to learn
1. Linux OS navigation (Ubuntu, quite comfortable with it)
2. Virtualization machine (Oracle Vm; can snapshot, can bridge the the guest OS with the the native OS....etc)
3. Vim text editor (quiet good at it....)
4. Have also been doing some C language basics for some time now.
Thing is, I don't have a mentor yet, and have been doing all of this alone utilizing Udemy, chatgpt of recent, YouTube and other online free books/pdf.
I need your advice....which field of programming would you recommend for someone trying to do it the self taught way.

Hi @nairalanders. I have been introduced to this online loan app by name "CARBON" It turned out that they also double as an online banking firm.
That is, It's actually possible to deposit, transfer and even make investments savings which incurs interest overtime with them.
I actually find the platform well organised and as a result interesting. I'm being tempted to start banking with them in other to increase my credit score and also they seems more user friendly compared to other traditional banking apps.
My fears, this is Nigeria, although licensed, I still need to be careful so as not to run into something that is not sustainable on the long run.
Whats your take on carbon (one finance) as a financial loan disbursing and online banking app. Do you think they are sustainable in the long run?

Hello Nairalanders, I've been doing this job for about three years now. I work as a security in a school. I started with #24,000 as my salary about eight months ago, the salary was increased to #30,000.
The issue is, I wrote the last Jamb exams and did well, God's willing I might be offered admission. I'm not so sure how realistic are chances of Maintaning the job while going to school. My plan is to quit the job, but I know quitting a job without a viable plan could be disastrous. Our job is a two days in and two days out patterned kind of job. Since the coronavirus stuff inspired blockade has been lifted, I want to leverage on my off days, and get engaged in a side hustle that could probably aid me in quitting the job if it does not go in consonant with my studies. pls, I'm not so sure of any good side hustle. pls I need Ur advice ( note: I barb very well and I'm also a professional dry cleaner) na same money issue make me never start any of them.
