Iran’s Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh was eliminated in Operation “Lion’s Roar”, according to preliminary reports. Nasirzadeh was appointed to the position in 2024, having previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces under the regime. In the previous decade, Nasirzadeh served as Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. His appointment was another made directly by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. During his service in the regime’s forces, he was a fighter pilot, although he never took part in an aerial combat engagement. Earlier in his career, he served in another capacity during the Iran–Iraq War. Just this month, he warned that any attempt to strike Iran would be met with a “decisive response.” “The response to any hostile act by the enemies will be unavoidable and crushing,” the senior Iranian official threatened at the time.
