streetMic: Get any on campus offer, then go set up an international employment with your school's office of business operations. they will provide all the forms you will be needing for you and give you further directives. Never stand on info u get from people(especially negative) as a standard. just like the VO told you way before you got your access to USA, every applicant have a peculiar case. some people come in here with the 'Hollywood' movie mindset, odas like me see coming here as mere relocation and its normal as a human that you will need harder press to survive a new environment and make things work to your taste/conditions. Anything you face or feel like doing, make sure its legal...walk towards the department/people responsible for it in your environment and ask on directives on how fast it can be done. there are exception to every rule and I always see myself as exception to stringent rules. In all believe God, work hard and be real to yourself. We Are Here to Stand Firm and Strong! Rijo already got an SSN.
Nice one StreetMic...............SSN is what the US government wants to give any who works in the US. This is cos all your records is linked to it. Do any illegal deal, bad credit, your SSN smiles negative.
StreetMic, your mind set is a drive to greatness. I share in your view. Here is a change of location(which offers a greater opportunity than where we came from) but we got to be double tough
We are get there by His grace!

boneruns: Does it mean when one is given as assistanceship, tuition and some smaller fees will be waived?
In my school, when you have assistantship, you will pay a reduced tuition of $25. However, there are other semester fees(about $1123) + Health Insurance fees to be paid.
I never knew this details but now I know, I just got to be happy and I am. No much monies but there is future!!!

ase65: Nice piece MsNas. U got a pm. Pls respond Did u get ur job just after ur 14 days arrival in d US. How did u go about it.....
Yea am this MsNas....Lol.
Yea I got the employment (Research Assistantship) before coming to the US. Truly without it, may family cannot afford it.
How I got the employment?....Devote time to finding out Prof's in different schools in the US whose research areas aligns with your interests. Write them an email, call them on phone. Truly they need us cos they get lots of money from grants and they need hands. He might ask for your CV and Transcript and any other he/she wants. Once he/she is ok, you are good to go. Even the US citizens do same.
Bear in mind that the school you might get the assistantship might not be your dream school........all I can say is Just get it so far as you aint paying(My US classmates have same opinion).LOL

Tekecoms1: sorry bro cos I am a lil bit confused. Do u mean one can easily diversify into something economically sensible as the Master progresses? Or can one do masters in another discipline other than what one applied for in an attempt to stilll diversify once its still related to ones field...
Hey....Sorry this reply came late.
If I may rephrase......U asking if sb who studied Biology( But desires the Medical School) in Nigeria can enter the US to study MSc in Crop Science if that is what gives him/her funding and ultimately helps his Visa and then move from there. Yes!!!
But you might or rather MUST have to finish the MSc and very importantly do well in the program(Research Publications counts a lot here). Just the recommendation you will get from your major professor is going to open doors to any other field you wish to venture into.
I hope I didnt deviate from your question.

TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by Rijo02: 4:30am On Aug 15, 2014
bigfrancis21: In more ways than one, coming here as a master's student is better than as an undergraduate.

1) The associated cost of a 4-year B.sc degree as compared to 1 or 2 years for masters. It is way much cheaper and better to complete your UG in Nigeria and come here for master's instead.

2) As an international student seeking work employment (H1B work visa) after graduation, the ease of getting jobs with a master's degree or having a company file for you if you have a master's degree. For those who are just hearing H1B work visa for the first time, the H1B work visa is a work visa valid for 6 years that enables you as an international student to work for a company after graduation from school. You don't file for it though, your hiring company files for it on your behaf. It is one of the routes to getting the green card, as some people may think the marriage route is the only route to green card. However, this route tends to take longer time, be competitive and favourable towards those really good in their field.

3) Additional 20,000 H1B work visas allocated to Master's applicants only, in addition to the 65,000 H1B work visas allocated to all applicants - Associate degree, B.sc, and Master's students. Due to the enormous number of H1B visa applications received each year, up to twice the number available, the USCIS carries out a lottery that selects the final 65,000 of all applications submitted. Now for the master's category, if all master's applications exceed 20,000 in number for that year, all applications in the Master's pool received are tried in a lottery and 20,000 winners are selected. The remaining unselected number in the master's category are then transferred to the 65,000 cateogory for a lottery along with other categories of applicants thus giving master's applicants double chances of selection, compared to one-chance for undergraduates.

4) More funding/scholarship opportunities from the school and Nigerian oil companies available to master's students compared to undergraduates where you have to rely solely on home/personal funds or hustling.

Coming here as a master's student tends to favour you more than B.sc.
Francis.......U are really big. Nice info about the H Visa. I dont really know the details but to the extend that I know, you seem to be in sync. MSc n Phd over here gives a greater opportunity but still not easy. Companies do not really want to get involved in H Visa stuff's but nevertheless, they will still give in.
For BSc, the opportunity is slim but they go opportunity to go for MSc esp the science students. Their prof's can easily offer them money for their program and they eventually get there.
Lets keep the ambition high..........we will all get there.
Peace!!!

OjaP: Dear All,

Please prepare well and make sure to come to America with a lot of money. Just like several people have said in the past days, it could be so tough as an international with no funding. The schools and embassies assume that you have the means to come here to study and that is why they both ask to see statement of accounts. Most people go to the embassy painting a picture of their parents sponsoring them and one would be astonished with the millions of naira in the statement of account they present to the V.Os. Sometimes, I keep wondering, and wonder if the millions in those accounts disappeared right after collecting the Visa.

That said, for undergraduates without any form of scholarships, and who can't afford enough money to attend a university, this goes to you. Please try to apply, and get a community college admission before coming here. Community colleges are cheap and you can easily transfer there and spend your first two years of college paying a cheaper tuition before going back to the university for your last 2 years. This would be so beneficial as your first 2 years would expose you to a lot of things which include meeting the right people. If you are not offered any form of scholarship as part of your admission packages; please do not come to the U.S at all expecting manna from heaven - It doesn't happen in most cases. You really have to come here with your finances well planned else you fall out of status. Life as an illegal immigrant is not what I pray anybody I know should experience; it is really tough.

For grad students who don't have the money, please make sure you get some form of funding from your school before coming. If not, make sure there is a promise you will get one before your second year in the program. Also, make sure you come for a degree that makes economic sense to the United States. You will fully understand the benefit of this by the time you graduate. I will always respect those folks on here who have decided to defer their admissions or look for a cheaper school or a community college so they can have a control of their finances in the US. Again, you guys will always earn my respect.

In any case, be well prepared financially for your first year of school in the United States. Do not let the words "hope" or "assume" be in your dictionary at all when coming here as a first timer. However, things tends to become easier the more you stay in the country. Many of us have passed through this, and many times we have gotten discouraged and wanted to give up. Many times we've had to summon up courage and keep fighting, and make sure never to derail or loose focus. The real heroes and heroines are those who despite all odds completed their studies even with good grades.

The United States is a land of opportunity where you are allowed to become what you want. There are several ways to getting a green card, and the process can be faster if you are educated. These days, most men and woman want a man/woman who is well educated and that has a great potential. Your US-born or naturalized bf/gf would take you serious or be ready to marry you if you are well educated. Your company would be ready to file for you if you are well educated and have the skills. You can file for yourself if in a PhD program or have a PhD with some publications. As you can see, all still boils down to being educated.

Life could be tough at the start in the United States but just like the sages would say; there would always be light at the end of the tunnel. Staying focused and determined are the two keys. Of course, putting GOD almighty first is the ultimate. With HIM, everything will fall in place. As a way of giving back to NL, if there is anyone coming to California and needs a place to stay before school resumes, such person should pm me as I may be able to work things out for him/her.

Good luck to everyone.
This is really a nice piece. Let each and every person here apply this as it concerns you. The US is not easy and will never change to be for international students. I thought I will start making monies grin when I arrived here considering I have assistantship that waived my tuition to $25 per semester and I have $1300/mo pay. On the contrary, there are other fees (Health Insurance, Lab Fees, Transport, Technology, etc) which I have to pay that will deduct stuffs from my paycheck ( State n Federal Taxes inclusive).

That said, the US is nice if you plan well. Am here for 14 days, settling into the new environment but have got my SSN which came less than 1 week after application (Unusual to my employer) and Driver's licence in view (Just for ID seek ooo).

My Advise: If your a graduate student in the science field, though you have your career interests, try and find interest in something else that easily help create funding and bring you here. Eg., I met a Nigerian Medical doctor who came here for MSc in Public health. He had is eye in the residency program but he cant make it there from Nigeria. He finished his MSc n now in the residence program with $50k pay. I admire his tact. A Chinese lady finished Msc in Food nutrition and went to the medical school. She has her green card now even with recommendation from her Food nutrition professor.

We are good, smart and intelligent Nigerians. We are really blessed by God. Lets move ahead and achieve that which we desire.

Cheers guys!

MsNas: I hope you found Boss Revolution good enough? I'm planning on trying Telbo too myself. Good choice about the BOA thing. They and Wells Fargo are what newcomers and Intls go for. You have funding right? You can just direct deposit your check into the account every month so that the account can remain charges free. Welcome smiley
Yea MsNas.....I have funding. I will give the payroll my acct for stipends and as such I dont need checks from school. How are you doing?

If ur on assistantship and u will be expecting direct deposit, you gona need a checking account. But you can still have a checking acct but there are charges that accrues if you dont maintain a minimum balance of $1500 or your above 23yrs or have a direct deposits of $250 monthly.
I asked for a credit card but I was told am not qualified yet. I understand shaa.

My travel experience......sorry it is long and some info might be very unnecessary.

My flight was at 2:45pm but I had to be at the airport at 11am in order to check in considering I had excess luggage.
When I arrived at the airport, I weighed my luggage and it was in excess as I already knew;I had to balance them. Finally, I got the required weight and I was good to go. I passed through the NDLEA official who searched my boxes(Had to carry the heavy box ontop their wooden table) after which I approached the counter. Two Emirates airport counter crew where interested in checking me in but I chose the fine lady. She offered me a window seat and aisle seat for Lagos to Dubai and Dubai to JFK resp.
I passed through customs, immigrations and others I don't really know. They were very cool anyways unlike what I expected. Along the checks, an immigration guy asked me where I was headed and what my mission was. I told him US and for studies (was mean during my reply) and he told me to proceed. A lady asked how much I had on me which I wish to declare and I told her.......nothing was demanded. Wow......so free. I had to wait at my boarding gate which was an opportunity to exhaust my Glo airtime. At a time I had to go board hoping to continue with the call on board.
We had some delay cos the Aircraft's fuel dispenser was bad. The pilot said we going to land in a city before proceeding to Dubai. I had to continue with my calls to my friends though I didn't finish the airtime before the pilot announced the problem had been fixed and we are going to Dubai.
Our flight to Dubai was cool........the air crew were splendid and their services sleek. One of the crew members asked why people from Lagos looked so serious...........I told here it is a Nigeria factor. A woman had a child who was troublesome throughout the flight time. People were so disturbed by the boisterous nature of the child.
When we landed in Dubai, I was supposed to wait for 5hrs before connecting though people that had there flights very close were sorted out. Emirates tried and fixed some people who had connecting flights while others were offered free rooms or free meal ticket.
I met a guy who was going to the US and had the same itinerary so we had to chill. I asked him to help take me a picture and I had to take him as well. I then asked if he was going for vacation and he said no; MSc. I then asked you know NL and he said yes. Wow........he asked what's my name but I told him to go first. Mr Datannonymous!!!! It was a delight to meet him. We had a great waiting time together; window shopped, pictures and meal. We got a meal ticket from the mother of the troublesome child........we really pitted the woman cos the child has a hormonal imbalance. They were on a trip to the UK for medical treatment. Funny enough, Mr Datannonymous was not in support of the woman's waka. He said she should take the child to church.....me I didnt see it as a church thing. Laughs all the way shaaa. At a time, we were tired, needed sleep but still were mindful of our connect time.
During the connect time, I was carrying Mr Data's carry on and was sent for a search by the Dubai customs........one of them was a Cameroonian who asked me if I had Garri on me. Very surprised.Lol. She later explained she saw my passport and as a Nigerian, we are used to carrying it. I laughed and called her Ayawude "Awilo". She was delighted.
We boarded and still had some delay cos some passengers whose luggages were already on board but didn't show up for the flight had to be offloaded for security reasons. Soon we were set for the 13hrs flight to JFK. It was nice cos I had fun with my US newly wedded couple seat neighbors who were just returning from honeymoon. At intervals, I visited Mr Data and we had our little chats. We were given the customs form and we filled it stating we had food and animal products.
When we landed, I had 2:20mins to meet up my connecting flight to GA and was worried about the POE. The queue was long but effective. During my time, the POE officer asked for my passport which I gave him. He asked if I had my skol letter......I thought it was my admission letter but he said I-20 and which I gave him. He asked me of my program, skol, how I want to pay. He advised I carry my I-20 anytime I want to leave the US and it should be signed yearly by my skol official. He asked where Abuja is located.......this was because of Visa was issued there. He was a nice guy and I left. Went to the immigration and I was sent to the Agriculture cos I had food. He asked the kind of food I had and I explained........my luggage was not opened and I was delighted to just pass it through the scan and that's it. Americans are good from what I experience at the POE. All were smiling while doing there job and they wouldnt hesitate to help you one ur in need (Info oo not money).
Connecting flight.........will put up that soon.

Sorry bro........I paid mine using Visa card. Master Card might work but there protocol plenty. Just use ur/sb else Visa card and pay. Fill ur information as it appeared on ur Passport. I had issues filling my naija phone number.....it always fail to update so I used a US local line and it worked.
Bear in mind dat US airways charge $60 for 2 checked in bags so always add dat amount when choosing a flight.
Have few dollars with u cos my Naira Master Card didn't work when I wanted to swipe for my luggage.
All the best.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by Rijo02: 12:04pm On Aug 02, 2014
MsNas: If your phone is unlocked, then it should work. SIM cards costs next to nothing anyways. You get yours or someone gives you his, you still have to pay for the activation (except your friend has activated it already).

For Boss Revolution, go to www.bossrevolution.com and just follow instructions. You need to have a working number before you can load Boss Revolution tho. It will ask for your number. So make sure your phone works before attempting to buy Boss Revolution. After you load up, go to Google App Store and download the Boss Revolution App. It will give you an extra $1 worth of call credit for downloading the app. That way, it will save you the stress of using the access number before you can connect International. Just dial the International number preceded by the international calling code of the country you're calling in the dial-pad of the app and it connects you directly. No stress.

PS: You can also buy Boss Revolution cards in the stores.
Perfect.......This is beautiful. I appreciate.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by Rijo02: 5:13am On Aug 02, 2014
MsNas: I'd advise you to get StraightTalk, SimpleMobile or MetroPCS. They're the cheapest oo. AT&T is also cheap. But sometimes they get crazy. You can subscribe for StraightTalk or SimpleMobile every month with as low as $30.

Stay away from SPRINT!!! Its not prepaid but postpaid. They will even allow you to call international, but when the bill comes at the end of the month, you will nearly pee your pants. If you're like me who keeps my phone inside the back pockets of my pants and allows the phine to butt-dial sometimes, you're in soup. cheesy Verizon and T-Mobile ain't no better. I wanted to downgrade my monthly payment with T-Mobile because I rarely use my data, wifi is in abundance everywhere, these yeye people no gree. Okay o, lemme downgrade into another thing, no luck. And their 4GLTE will be sucking my 4G allowance anyhow sef.

StraightTalk rides on AT&T network; but its cheaper than AT&T (an AT&T has one of the best coverage in America). SimpleMobile and MetroPCS rides on T-Mobile Network, but they're cheaper than T-Mobile. It even allows you to text international for free. T-Mobile no dey gree me text international.

For International calling cards, don't go near Rebtel. They're thieves. Use Boss Revolution. Its cheaper. Don't blame me, I'm a broke college girl cheesy
MsNas......Thanks a bunch. I think I will go for the AT&T cos a friend who got an AT&T phone had a line in it which he doesn't need. He offered to give me. I hope it works in my Samsung.
Hey how do I do the boss revolution thing?
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part5 by Rijo02: 4:59am On Aug 02, 2014
zeezahbee: I do t-mobile and its $40 for 500mb , unlimited calls and sms in the US. For the $50 for 1G, unlimited calls and sms in the US. I use the $40 because I got wifi in my apartment and most places I go. So u can do the 40 or the 50. Then to call naija, I buy the $5 boss revolution and I can speak for 2hrs.
Wow......thanks zee. U are gud. Bt wats the boss revolution stuff? How can I get it?

Pls, my elder brother is sponsoring me and his account is not that strong, I have about 4m on my form I-20 and he has just around 5m on his account balance. Pls, I am also thinking of calling him my Dad sonce we bears d same name, I learnt dat carries a better weight, but my fear is dat d age difference is just like 18yrs, I don't know if dia is a way they can find out d age difference in d visa application form and also find out if he is actually my elder brother and not father. Pls, enlighten me plssss
I don't think calling your brother ur dad is a good idea. I recall it was only my parents information(DOB included) dat was requested I fill in my ds 160 and putting your brothers name might hold him down; if not now, later.
Let him beef up his account a bit and you get ready to tell the VO he wants to pay ur dad back cos he trained him.
I want with my brother's statement and the VO asked for it though favorably cos my assistantship covered me.

I had an experience with Aero today.I had free 20kg but my 2 luggages weighed 51.5kg so I paid for the excess.
Emirates gave me two free luggages, 23kg each which means am still having excess.
Pls what is the best way to approach this?

Nicklutz: Hello everyone,
i have a question, just finished my service in feb,and a cousin of mine in the US told me she wants me to do my masters in her former school and she's also willing to sponsor me,my question is can it work out, especially in the issuing of visa,i want to know in other to avoid stories dat touches the heart...thanks.
Ofcos it will work........Just dat u need to show evidence of funding coming from Nigeria not the US; doing so proves part of ur home ties.
If ur cousin will start now to fund ur parents account so as to have a good flow of transaction before ur admission and visa interview that will be great.
Best of luck.

Me: technically, the major diff btw elect and computer is that in elect , there are courses in power and electricity generation that is not present in computer and then in computer there gee courses on digital logic circuit and devices that are bit Present in elect curriculum,
But asides that computer and elect have majority of Their courses in common and telecommunications is one of those things they have in common. And I will be majoring I telecomms on getting to tamuk so I am still within the scope if computer engineering
( the guy nods head and said ok)

Vo: who's gonna sponsor me

Me: my uncle

Vo; why is it that you Nigerians always have rich uncles.

Me: fear catch me small buh I conpose
I said he is actually my uncle , the only brother my mum has and he has been my major sponsor throughout my undergraduates and he promised me if in able to graduate with a good result he will sponsor my masters degree in the us . And that this is a decision that has been made while I was still and undergraduate. So it's more like a conditional promise.

Vo: what does your father do?

Me: he's a poultry farmer

Vo: so u had a good undergraduate result?
May I see ur certufucate.

Me: I gave him

Vo; saw that u had a 2:1 buh he couldn't authenticate it because I laminated it.
(So please if you haven't already; don't laminate ur certificate oo)

Vo: may I see ur WAEC

Me: I search This WAEC I no see am and he dey there.

Vo: ok bring all your documents lemme see

Me : gave him everything even with envelope

Na that time hin come see my WAEC himself
He saw my three three statements of accounts, my gre and ielts result , and everything wen my DOB.

He now returned everything to me and started typing in the system

At this point I was scared and I dey wait for his final decison.

Vo: can u please help me check if I gave u your I:20 , I'm supposed to sign on it .

Me : searched through my docs and I gave him.

Vo: signed it returned it with a white paper and said the magic words

Pick ur your visa in three days time at that address.

Me : thanks you sir

God is wonderful ooo

Na my first time ooo

Can I go ahead with the booking of reservation despite the fact that I am yet to collect my visa, although it has been approved.
And I will like to know how to get cheap flights from Lagos to Houston before 17th of august as school resumes 18th

Thanks in anticipation if your favorable response.
Yea I think you can considering affordability; the earlier the best. Lol
Try check flights from Lagos to Texas and compare with flights from Lagos to JFK then to Texas. That will help you decide.
Best of luck.

informat101: Please I am a graduate and I want to apply for masters in a school in usa.I graduated from a private univ with a 2.2 my problem, is my ssce is neco would I ever be accpeted?.this issue has been giving me sleepless nights.I just feel this waec mistake I made keeps hunting me and it would never stop.my waec result was good just didn't make mathematics I always wish if I had known then I wuld have repeated the class and rerote the exam.
I don't think your ssce has anything to do with your Masters. Yea you got a 2.2 but that's not the problem......its your CGPA.
Check for schools that will accept your point and apply. You will be fine.
All the best.

Graviton2: I didn't bother to read this post, but I will say this: i have nothing against any individual here, I'm always about my own business, so do well to never quote or mention me ever again.
Graviton.....can you do me a favor? What exactly do you gain in saying "never quote or mention me ever again"? Does it make the whole issue any better? Come on menh!
