Sequel to the shift in dates of the general elections, the Nigerian Senate said it will, on resumption, summon the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Atahirru Jega to explain the actual reason behind the postponement.

Speaking with newsmen in Kano, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government, Alhaji Kabiru Gaya, said the first assignment of the lawmakers on resumption of plenary sitting is to summon the INEC chairman and ask him reasons why the commission postponed the polls.

Gaya noted that since the issue of security given as excuse by INEC for the postponement has been denied by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ruling party has been harping on lack of logistics on the part of INEC and not security.Wondering why such a postponement should be effected without consulting the National Assembly, the lawmaker added that in an ideal democratic setting, the notion of checks and balances must be respected.

According to him, it is not the responsibility of the military to interfere in the nation’s electoral process, saying the military institution is only saddled with the task of defending the territorial integrity of the country. He said: “Even if the election is going to be postponed 1,000 times, nothing could stop the victory of the APC. We are ready to call the bluff of anyone behind the gimmick. We are going to win the elections from top to bottom because the electorate are fed up with a lame-duck presidency.”

Senator Gaya, however, stated that since the INEC has lost its grip as an impartial arbiter, the commission’s chairman would be summoned by the Senate to explain its role in effecting the decision to shift the elections.
