Travel / Re: Why Do Nigerians Think That They Can Only Make It Abroad? by riqblaze(m): 11:30am On Dec 10, 2018
@op at some point you have to tell yourself the truth. If a Nigerian child dreams of being a rocket scientist, is it possible for him to actualize that dream in Nigeria? Or if he dreams of being a researcher in plasma physics or in nano materials and maybe condensed matter physics, is it possible to actualize those dreams in Nigeria? You see the problem comes with our idea of what it means to "make it in life". Apologies, but not everybody wants to build a house in the village, build one in Lekki, take a chieftaincy title, drive a Range Rover sport and maybe employ a few people and all those other things most people see as making it in life. Different people have different goals in life and Nigeria cannot help you achieve those goals and would kill your dreams on a good day.

Where I am now, the university is like a tourist site. Parents bring their children and schools bring their pupils to the school and say to them, if you study hard, you will be here someday. I've met students here who are the 3rd generation from their family. It's a thing of pride and a family dream to study in Tsinghua University for the average Chinese. Here, you will see the reward for hardwork. If you work hard, you will be successful. Can you say the same for Nigeria? Can you truthfully tell yourself that hardwork pays in Nigeria? It's things like these that make people to leave. Most of us want to bring up our kids to value hardwork and see that it pays, not just in words but in example. Most people are looking for a sane society to train their children.

Nigeria as a country has killed many childhood dreams. A country that forces you to study microbiology instead of medicine after wasting 4 years of your life and then still asks you to go and farm or teach when you graduate and give you paltry sums under one useless youth empowerment scheme. Many young people are frustrated in Nigeria and it's because they do not see a future for themselves here.

As a country, we're still on the banal level of survival. Everyone just wants to survive. Most don't even have enough for today and you're asking them to dream. Little wonder most young people now believe that the only way out is through ritual killing and internet scam.

Like I said, at some point you will tell yourself the truth and come out of this self deceit.

TylerDurden:
The virus is still in his blood stream and can be spread even through sex.

Nobody gets healed of Ebola, you only survive the fever and the virus remains in your body only to pop out whenever your immune collapses.

Consider Ebola like Malaria. You will never get cured of the virus but you can manage it.

I never knew this part. I always used to think that one becomes immune to the virus after surviving an attack. I even used to advocate studying the antibodies and immune system of survivors towards finding a permanent cure or vaccine; Louis Pasteur style.

If your statement is true, then the solution is still a long way off

I like to ask for the correct answer, who really knows? What is the pathology of the Ebola virus?

Does one get immune to the virus after surviving an attack?

After being passed free of Ebola and the risk of transmitting it, can one still get infected a second time?

I'm asking because I'm thinking the immune systems of these survivors can be studied and maybe less virulent and lethal strains of the virus cultured towards developing a cure and a vaccine.
NYSC / Re: My Brother Was Just Assaulted In His PPA by riqblaze(m): 2:58pm On Feb 24, 2018
Update

He has left there now and is currently in a safe place. I have also spoken to the LGI and she said she had even officially sent a letter to the school on Thursday, stating her plans to remove them from there because of the unpaid debt and that she's surprised she's just hearing this. She says she is currently not in Delta state but in Benin and that upon resumption on Monday, she will go with a team of police men to the school to arrest those involved in the fracas. She also says she's pulling them out finally never to return there and will follow up to make sure they are paid all they are owed.

She was quite reassuring and I have decided to let matters lie for now. I will call her again on Monday to get the feedback.

NYSC / My Brother Was Just Assaulted In His PPA by riqblaze(m): 2:24pm On Feb 24, 2018
Guys I'm bringing this here because I know I'll get unbiased opinion, devoid of emotions.

So it turns out my younger brother who is serving in Coastline Seafarers Academy a kind of Maritime Polytechnic in Delta state has not been paid by his PPA since July 2017. Fast forward to 2018, the Corp members there are reminding the school about their outstanding pay, especially as they will be passing out in April. Apparently the school is not happy about this and has been having issues with them. Today, my brother just called me that some of the school personnel ordered some students to beat him up over some issues with a door. I don't have the full information about everything and so will not want to take hasty action.

I asked him what he has done about it and he confirmed that he has called his LGI and informed her and she has said she will take it up with the rector. I have also asked him to go and report it to the nearest police station, not like they will do anything about it, but just for record purposes.

This is what I intend doing further.

1. Call the LGI about it and pile pressure on her so the school will do the right thing

2. Ask him to leave that place immediately and go home for now until it's safe to return there

3. Send an official complaint to the school, NYSC and the Nigeria police, follow up on social media and Nairaland if need be.

4. Follow this up to ensure those involved in this are brought to book and it's safe for him to return there.

What's your opinion guys?

Shams101:

Hello, I would advice u to do the test based on the initial course you submitted. I did what u r thinking of last year and it didn't work out. I eagerly applied for petroleum engineering last year without proper consultation to know that I would be answering questions on pet. Engrn. Then, I knew close to nothing about pet. Engrn and so on the test day I developed cold feet and I answered questions on renewable energy because a friend of mine who did his' before me told me I would be able to answer the questions well. It turned out to be true coz the questions were relatively simple. Sadly, I wasn't shortlisted for the awards but my friend got the award. I feel this was because he chose energy systems engineering as his course of study which was related to the test he did and mine wasn't at all.
My take is this, make sure the test option you will choose is strongly related to the course you applied for. Last year, there was no question on pet. Engr so ptdf would be expecting u to choose the reservoir engineering option. Secondly, I believe if u get the award, u can change your course and university of study because some people who have already applied for a particular course would not get admitted.
So read and read very well...Success to us all.

Thanks pal for this tip. Can you connect me with your friend or anyone I can get study materials for energy systems engineering. Please help. you can send it to marinusokoronkwo@gmail.com

I also need to ask this now, pardon my importunity.

In the past it was possible to write the test on a different field from what was applied for, usually because the candidate had a change of mind after the application.

Is that still possible? Will it apply to this year's test?

Politics / I Just Heard The Youngest President In Africa Is 70 Years. by riqblaze(m): 8:47pm On Jun 15, 2017
Just heard on Brilla FM that the youngest president in Africa, the president of Eritrea is 70 years.

Let's put this in perspective, it means Obama would never have become a president if he was African.

Now tell me how a septuagenarian would take the business of securing the future of a people seriously when he has no future. Septuagenarians having to make decisions for millions of young and budding minds across a whole continent? Figure that out and tell me how the continent is expected to move forward in a fast paced and continuously improving world.

Funny enough, most of these leaders have been in the helm of affairs since their youth, plunging the continent into darkness in their youth and consolidating their efforts in their old age. This is the sad and sorry state of Africa.

Someone will come here now and tell me that the youths are not ready and present wonderful arguments to back up his claims, but I would rather take a bet9ja playing, hallelujah shouting, sai baba screaming youth who is jobless to this current crop of African corpses heading nations.

Most organization will not employ a 70 year old man to any role, in fact, most will never allow a senior citizen to head them. They look for young and vibrant people who still have mental agility to take up these jobs and yet countries which should be run with more efficient methods than companies are governed by dead men walking.

If I continue using a particular insecticide for 50 years to no effect, one day I will stop and start using that worthless bathroom slippers to kill cockroaches. That is common sense.

I know the youths are not ready but it's high time we tried something else as this corposcracy is no longer working.

These same African youths we berate are driving growth in key sectors of their nations' economies, taking advantage of the opportunities available in their time to improve important economic metrics in their countries; yet people who do not have any business being in power make policies that destroy all that is being worked for and steal what is left to place under their coffins.

I'm already angry this evening. If there's any candidate below 40 in 2019, I'm voting for him, even if he's an slowpoke. If there's none, my vote is in my pocket. There's an exception to this though and that applies to those who will bring in tribalism to this thread or support for any of the useless political parties or politicians in Nigeria.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer

ehie:
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the country
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely a revelation is at hand
Surely the second coming is at hand.
The second coming?

Emeka walked into the room for the third time in less than five minutes and there she lay sleeping, all curled up and beautiful as an apparition.

He took one long glance at her and walked out as he had done twice previously.

He knew this time that he was lost and there was no redemption; one more second in that room and he would cross all boundaries with her.

Theirs was a love story that had come a long way and it had all begun on that sunny day in May.

Health / 21 Ssecrets For Your 20s by riqblaze(m): 11:47am On Dec 07, 2016
I have been going through some tough patches these days and I went searching the web and then I found this. Thought I should share.

riqblaze:

1. Never looking at your budget and never making a budget is the exact same thing.

2. The possibility for greatness and embarrassment both exist in the same space. If you’re not willing to be embarrassed, you’re probably not willing to be great.

3. Feel no shame in seeking help from a counselor or therapist. We all have crap we try to wrap and hide under the Christmas tree. Get rid of it before it smells up your entire holiday.

4. All job listings on Craigslist lead you to a warehouse in downtown LA “wearing something nice with shoes you can walk in”.

5. Don’t ever, ever check Facebook when you’re:
A. Depressed21-Secrets-for-your-20s
B. Drinking.
C. Depressed and Drinking.
D. Unemployed.
E. Anytime after 9:17 pm.
F. Struggling with being blessed with singleness while all your friends seem to be blessed with 2.4 kids and that blazing white-picket-fence shining with the glory of Jesus Christ himself.

6. All those amazing college friends you swore you’d never lose contact with after college yeah, well, you might lose contact. Moving all over the country, getting married, having kids, all make that forty-five minute conversation with your sophomore roommate a little more complicated than it used to be over a game of Mario Kart. Making and keeping friends in our twenties takes intentionality.

7. Your twenties will produce more failures than you’ll choose to remember. The key is when you fail, don’t begin calling yourself a failure.
8. Every break up has two break ups. I’m no physicist, but this is a law of physics, of this I am certain. Yes you’ll have the first tearful “It’s over” sitting in the front seat of your Honda or on a park swing. Then 1-2 months later after there’s “been talk”, you’ll have the “real breakup” because she forgets to call like she used to or he checks out the waitress like he’s a judge for Miss USA. And gird those loins because in the second break up there will be a lot more breaking.

9. The Freshman-Fifteen is nothing compared to the Cubicle-Cincuenta. Don’t sit at your computer perched like a Roman gargoyle. Don’t let office birthday cake be forced on you like a cigarette behind your middle school. Bust out before your butt does.

10. And yes, cubicles don’t make sense to anybody other than upper-management. I would be willing to bet that only 3% of all “Cubicle Americans” actually have a positive outlook on life. And half of that 3% is stealing from their company. You need to own, hone, refine, and define what I call your Signature Sauce so that you can say goodbye to your cubicle, and hello to a purposeful and profitable life.

11. If at some point between 22 – 27 you feel like you’re six years old again, lost and alone at the San Diego Zoo (it’s a big-frickin-zoo), frantically searching for a familiar face — hold tight, you’re experiencing a bit of a Quarter-Life Crisis. Stay put. Pray a lot. And in no time someone will call your name across the loud speaker to tell you where you can be found.

12. Reckless drinking and reckless flirting have a direct correlation. Friends don’t let friends drive, or flirt, drunk.

13. If you grew up going to church, at some point in your 20’s you’ll probably stop going to church. If you grew up with faith as a central part of your life, at some point in your twenties faith might move to the outskirts of town next to the trailer park and three-legged squirrel refuge. Your twenties are a process of making faith your own apart from your parents and childhood. Sometimes that means staggering away so you know what you’re coming back to.

14. Don’t ever begin dating someone you first met whilst in swimsuits. Doubly-don’t if you’re both in swimsuits whilst holding an alcoholic beverage.

15. Obsessive Comparison Disorder is the smallpox of our generation. 9 out of 10 doctor’s agree this disorder is the leading cause to eating a whole sleeve of Oreo’s while watching Real Housewives of OC. Say no to obsessive comparison disorder before it starts. Remember everyone’s too busy putting a PR spin on their Facebook profile to care much about yours.

16. Life will never feel like it’s “supposed to”. Being twentysomething can feel like death by unmet expectations. However, let me be so brash to say that you are right now, at this moment, exactly where you need to be. But you’ll only be able to see that five years and thirty-eight days from today.

17. Success in your twenties is more about setting the table than enjoying the feast. Success is your twenties is about owning, honing, refining, and defining what I call your Signature Sauce — the unique flavor you bring to the world where your passion, purpose, and career collide.

18. Marriage WILL NOT fix any of your problems. No, instead marriage will put a magnifying glass on how many problems you really have. We grow up carrying bags with our insecurities, fears, bad relationships, problems with our parents — you name it. Begin to ditch these bags now. Newly married and living in a small apartment is no place to store a luggage set full of shiz.

19. An assortment of crappy jobs are a twentysomething rite of passage. Figure out what you need to learn there and learn it. If you don’t, an assortment of crappy jobs might be your thirty, forty and fiftysomething rite of passage as well.

20. Great ideas alone mean nothing. Your ability to persevere through 16 major setbacks, a lack of passion, forgetting why you started this great idea in the first place, and all the people who allude that your great idea is actually quite terrible — well, that means everything.

21. The grass is always greener on the other side, until you get there and realize it’s because of all the manure.

You sound desperate! You have a good CGPA though, presently most university admission application is on-going. What was you first degree project all about? You can form a research proposal around it, search for recent work in that area, develop it, send it, your transcript, and a brief introduction of Ur self, with Ur area of research to as many professors in Ur field and pray u get a response.

Some schools don't require you having a supervisor before giving you admission while some requires it, but it is advantageous if you can secure one before submitting your application, he can tell you some internal scholarship to apply for and the rest.

The gurus here will help you the more

I am not desperate bro, I don't want to further research around my project in school. a different project was imposed on me different from what I wanted. I am interested in research in thermo-fluid engineering, particularly CFD or in heat transfer. Like I said earlier, I don't know where to start, but I believe I will be in Canada by Sept next year by God's grace and with thehelp of the good people on this forum
