Travel / Re: Why Do Nigerians Think That They Can Only Make It Abroad? by riqblaze(m): 11:30am On Dec 10, 2018 |
@op at some point you have to tell yourself the truth. If a Nigerian child dreams of being a rocket scientist, is it possible for him to actualize that dream in Nigeria? Or if he dreams of being a researcher in plasma physics or in nano materials and maybe condensed matter physics, is it possible to actualize those dreams in Nigeria? You see the problem comes with our idea of what it means to "make it in life". Apologies, but not everybody wants to build a house in the village, build one in Lekki, take a chieftaincy title, drive a Range Rover sport and maybe employ a few people and all those other things most people see as making it in life. Different people have different goals in life and Nigeria cannot help you achieve those goals and would kill your dreams on a good day. Where I am now, the university is like a tourist site. Parents bring their children and schools bring their pupils to the school and say to them, if you study hard, you will be here someday. I've met students here who are the 3rd generation from their family. It's a thing of pride and a family dream to study in Tsinghua University for the average Chinese. Here, you will see the reward for hardwork. If you work hard, you will be successful. Can you say the same for Nigeria? Can you truthfully tell yourself that hardwork pays in Nigeria? It's things like these that make people to leave. Most of us want to bring up our kids to value hardwork and see that it pays, not just in words but in example. Most people are looking for a sane society to train their children. Nigeria as a country has killed many childhood dreams. A country that forces you to study microbiology instead of medicine after wasting 4 years of your life and then still asks you to go and farm or teach when you graduate and give you paltry sums under one useless youth empowerment scheme. Many young people are frustrated in Nigeria and it's because they do not see a future for themselves here. As a country, we're still on the banal level of survival. Everyone just wants to survive. Most don't even have enough for today and you're asking them to dream. Little wonder most young people now believe that the only way out is through ritual killing and internet scam. Like I said, at some point you will tell yourself the truth and come out of this self deceit. 8 Likes |

TylerDurden: I never knew this part. I always used to think that one becomes immune to the virus after surviving an attack. I even used to advocate studying the antibodies and immune system of survivors towards finding a permanent cure or vaccine; Louis Pasteur style. If your statement is true, then the solution is still a long way off I like to ask for the correct answer, who really knows? What is the pathology of the Ebola virus? Does one get immune to the virus after surviving an attack? After being passed free of Ebola and the risk of transmitting it, can one still get infected a second time? I'm asking because I'm thinking the immune systems of these survivors can be studied and maybe less virulent and lethal strains of the virus cultured towards developing a cure and a vaccine. |
NYSC / Re: My Brother Was Just Assaulted In His PPA by riqblaze(m): 2:58pm On Feb 24, 2018 |
Update He has left there now and is currently in a safe place. I have also spoken to the LGI and she said she had even officially sent a letter to the school on Thursday, stating her plans to remove them from there because of the unpaid debt and that she's surprised she's just hearing this. She says she is currently not in Delta state but in Benin and that upon resumption on Monday, she will go with a team of police men to the school to arrest those involved in the fracas. She also says she's pulling them out finally never to return there and will follow up to make sure they are paid all they are owed. She was quite reassuring and I have decided to let matters lie for now. I will call her again on Monday to get the feedback. 2 Likes |
NYSC / My Brother Was Just Assaulted In His PPA by riqblaze(m): 2:24pm On Feb 24, 2018 |
Guys I'm bringing this here because I know I'll get unbiased opinion, devoid of emotions. So it turns out my younger brother who is serving in Coastline Seafarers Academy a kind of Maritime Polytechnic in Delta state has not been paid by his PPA since July 2017. Fast forward to 2018, the Corp members there are reminding the school about their outstanding pay, especially as they will be passing out in April. Apparently the school is not happy about this and has been having issues with them. Today, my brother just called me that some of the school personnel ordered some students to beat him up over some issues with a door. I don't have the full information about everything and so will not want to take hasty action. I asked him what he has done about it and he confirmed that he has called his LGI and informed her and she has said she will take it up with the rector. I have also asked him to go and report it to the nearest police station, not like they will do anything about it, but just for record purposes. This is what I intend doing further. 1. Call the LGI about it and pile pressure on her so the school will do the right thing 2. Ask him to leave that place immediately and go home for now until it's safe to return there 3. Send an official complaint to the school, NYSC and the Nigeria police, follow up on social media and Nairaland if need be. 4. Follow this up to ensure those involved in this are brought to book and it's safe for him to return there. What's your opinion guys? |

riqblaze: I also need to ask this now, pardon my importunity. In the past it was possible to write the test on a different field from what was applied for, usually because the candidate had a change of mind after the application. Is that still possible? Will it apply to this year's test? |

aribisala0: Thank you for reminding me that I did not do due diligence. I will do better next time. However, if after your due diligence you can list just five out of about 54 countries that are exceptions, then you must agree with me that it's still a big problem and just shows how badly leadership has failed in Africa. Thanks once again for reminding me of the need for due diligence 2 Likes |
Politics / I Just Heard The Youngest President In Africa Is 70 Years. by riqblaze(m): 8:47pm On Jun 15, 2017 |
Just heard on Brilla FM that the youngest president in Africa, the president of Eritrea is 70 years. Let's put this in perspective, it means Obama would never have become a president if he was African. Now tell me how a septuagenarian would take the business of securing the future of a people seriously when he has no future. Septuagenarians having to make decisions for millions of young and budding minds across a whole continent? Figure that out and tell me how the continent is expected to move forward in a fast paced and continuously improving world. Funny enough, most of these leaders have been in the helm of affairs since their youth, plunging the continent into darkness in their youth and consolidating their efforts in their old age. This is the sad and sorry state of Africa. Someone will come here now and tell me that the youths are not ready and present wonderful arguments to back up his claims, but I would rather take a bet9ja playing, hallelujah shouting, sai baba screaming youth who is jobless to this current crop of African corpses heading nations. Most organization will not employ a 70 year old man to any role, in fact, most will never allow a senior citizen to head them. They look for young and vibrant people who still have mental agility to take up these jobs and yet countries which should be run with more efficient methods than companies are governed by dead men walking. If I continue using a particular insecticide for 50 years to no effect, one day I will stop and start using that worthless bathroom slippers to kill cockroaches. That is common sense. I know the youths are not ready but it's high time we tried something else as this corposcracy is no longer working. These same African youths we berate are driving growth in key sectors of their nations' economies, taking advantage of the opportunities available in their time to improve important economic metrics in their countries; yet people who do not have any business being in power make policies that destroy all that is being worked for and steal what is left to place under their coffins. I'm already angry this evening. If there's any candidate below 40 in 2019, I'm voting for him, even if he's an slowpoke. If there's none, my vote is in my pocket. There's an exception to this though and that applies to those who will bring in tribalism to this thread or support for any of the useless political parties or politicians in Nigeria. |

Emeka walked into the room for the third time in less than five minutes and there she lay sleeping, all curled up and beautiful as an apparition. He took one long glance at her and walked out as he had done twice previously. He knew this time that he was lost and there was no redemption; one more second in that room and he would cross all boundaries with her. Theirs was a love story that had come a long way and it had all begun on that sunny day in May. I hope say I try 2 Likes |
