Please I need advise about living in Fort Mc Murray with hubby. Do you think it's a nice city to start a family and also being someone who has lived in Lagos all her life, how can one kill boredom, what business ideas also as I heard it's a small city.

Fort McMurray is a city of about 80,000 people. It’s basically an oil city with lots of money going around. True to the fact that they do a lot of drugs here, it’s only a matter of choice for you to decide if you will join them or not. I landed in Fort McMurray from Nigeria some few years back and I can boldly tell you I never regretted it. Though it’s a work town with little side attractions, but you can be sure of making good money and can afford to take your family for nice vacations within and outside Canada if you want. Even a Janitor will make at least $50k minimal. I first worked as security when I landed and was going home with $4k in a month after tax which is on a 7 days on 7 days off basis. My intention was to get a white collar job sitting in front of a computer but as God will have it I now work as an heavy equipment operator which is sweet, you just don’t want to imagine what an HEO takes home bi-weekly. I lost all I ever had including my certificates and travel doc in 2016 wild fire(the beast) except for the cloths I put on for work and my car that fateful day. The most painful part was that then I was renting and as a Nigerian didn’t see getting a property insurance as something important. I would have been at least $100k richer if I have had that $25 monthly insurance for my property. My dear a lot have really gone by but thank God in less than a year after I lost everything, I bought my own house to the glory of God. When you come here there are lots of opportunities you just have to be flexible and discover what works in the city you live in. God will help you.

You can take a one year certificate course, could be online or in class depending on what works for you.

Dear sir/ma, pls let’s not leave Nigeria and come to Canada to do $12/hr job, if u are single without so much bills and expenses you will just be living from hand to mouth, but with a family it’s a no no otherwise you will just have to go register with food bank to be getting monthly food supplies. You are more than that, spread your nets and look beyond NB pls.

If you want to practice your tailoring trade, I think places like Toronto, Ottawa should be your abode cos you have a lot of Nigerians there and they merry a lot. With the little money they make,they live life to the fullest and every Saturday there is always an Owambe things around.

I do not think they rush there because of skycrappers. People move to provinces where they believe they can easily get back on track. Alot of Nigerians work in the finance and IT industry; hence, Toronto region come up as a natural fit for them.

Alberta's economy wasn't doing to good when I left in 2015, and I dont think much has changed since I left as I still visit frequently. However, I know that Grand Prairie and Fort mc to an extent just as you mentioned were booming and maybe still booming, but the boom is still very low compared to when Alberta's oil was selling for over $100 a barrel unlike now that it is selling for around $10 a barrel.

You right though, IT is better in Ontario but most people I know go there for comfort.

Why is it that 90% of Nairalanders go to Ontario, trust me Alberta comes top if you can have your feet on ground. People just rush to Toronto in particular just because it’s a big city. As a Nigerian if you not in Canada to look at skyscrapers, you may start considering Alberta. If you an engineer, Fort Mcmurray is your best bet.

I've been paying ~255CAD monthly and I was just wondering if I could negotiate for a review any time soon.

PS: It's a brand new car and I'm on Class 5.

It actually depends on the type of car you driving and the year, also you province matters a lot cos in Ontario insurance premiums is way too high. Keep a good driving record,do not go past red lights, make sure u stop for stop signs, avoid distrative driving,do not make a claim where you can avoid and make sure no one makes a claim on you. The premiums doesn’t just go down the following year even if your records are perfect. It will take an average of 3 consecutive years for you to get appreciatiable reductions in your premiums.

Yeah you can as long as the date of first issue is 2015, you are good to go. Just take the knowledge test and you will submit whatever license you bring from Nigeria to the registry and they will go confirm the authenticity of the license, usually takes between 5-8 business days after which you be invited for road test if your Nigerian license is authentic.NB. Pls make sure you bring an original licence cos if they discover its Oluwole/Aba made my dear it’s prosecution straight no stories.
