Ever tried to design your website from scratch (or even with CMS's) and after developing everything, esp. with good fonts, it looks great on your PC's web browser such as Chrome... You would smile and be happy with yourself... Right? Now, view it on a mobile browser! Then, it isn't as beautiful anymore... Your "font-family: 'times new romans', 'or anyother font you use'"; on your css isn't working on the mobile device. why isn't it working? Well, every browser from IE to Chrome to Mozilla or even Safari have a set fixed fonts... so, they might not recognize any foreign fonts used in the css. if the browser doesn't recognize it, it will revert to the default font on the browser. now, the above statement is not limited only to pc browsers alone, but to mobile browsers too. Solution. With google fonts, you can style your html documents. And the font style will appear the same across all browsers and devices. Desktop, tablets or mobile devices. --The process is really simple. Just visit google fonts, search for the font you like. click and copy the link to the stylesheet, and paste it into the head section of your html file... e.g. <html> <head> <link href='https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Presido' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'> <!-- note "presido" doesn't exist, i just put it as an example--> </head> </html> --Then, it is important that your add the font name into the css document (inline or external) in order of importance. e.g. body{ font-family: presido; "san seriff"; /*presido is the first ahead of san seriff, and it is given from the google fonts...*/ } note: You can add more than one style to different parts of your site... You can ad this to content management systems, such WordPress. Click HERE to have a look at my personal redesign of my old site... Nb: I'm still designing it... in need of a web developer, advice and so forth, send me a mail on admin@tha247webguy.com or whatsapp on 08167836364. |

To begin with, just how much do you expect to make as a freelance web developer ![]() For me, this is quite hard to answer! why? let me see... Hmmmm. For one, years of experience varies! and as a result frequency of jobs will differ too. someone who has been around for say, 5years should do better than someone who started in January of this year. Because he has more experience in dealing with people, he has more referrals, more skill, more network of fellow developers, figured out other means of income, probably has an internet business running and so forth. But let me try to speak from experience and extrapolation with other designers in know. For someone going on solid for a year+, he could make some in the range of =N=700,000 - 1.5M per year. I can't give you in months because, in truth, some months will be less rosy than others. And the payment plan of some clients can funny... And jobs vary. Some smaller than others. ****more on this later**** it still isn't a bad sum, esp if you have a "day job"... or not job! Besides money....? There are other benefits besides money... number one for me. in all honesty, has been that i have met some awesome people... My case is even funny! I have only met two, ok three (i just met him 3 weeks ago) of my clients personally. Even than, one of them is my friend's wife! Every other person, as been via emails and phone calls (...and they said we can't be professionals in Nigeria... That a Nigerian cannot be trusted). It is interesting to hear what someone wants to achieve and brainstorm to make it possible. Another benefit has been referrals. Another is that you get to set up your game. What Else? From my experience with working with most of my clients, esp those that run blogs and online stores... They do not fully envisage the pressures and expectations that come with running a "website". For a blog for example needs to meet SEO standards, a online store needs updates and uploads on products from time to time, amongst others. Well many believe they can do theses things themselves, they soon find out that it isn't exactly easy. esp. since they have to work their day jobs also. Now, if you are really interested in their progress (after all their progress is good for you too), you can become their admin, or email marketing agent... or offer to solve some kind of problem of the other. These could lead to some other forms of income for you. You see; a client would need a graphic designer, a content manager, a site manager, a consultant and so forth... rather than employ each other these services, he can employ you! makes sense for the both of you! Down sides...? I think it is fair to lay out the down sides of being a freelance designer... Honestly, it isn't as easy to manage things esp. if you have other obligations; church, maybe job, relationship and so forth. You must have a passion for it. 1. Stress: You will work well into the night -I mean 2 to 3am!- and on the whole of your weekends. Why? Your clients will be busy during the day and will remember you during the late night. And may dedicate their whole weekend to pulling down what you have designed during the week! So, get ready! believe me! Being a web developer can be stressful or should i say draining. I know that the response many give to anyone afraid of starting a new business or "start up", is just start it! but the fear of failure is justified, n can be a tool for success! instead of a limitation... More and more people are having online stores, n businesses in Nigeria. Salute! I honestly believe the Nigerian market isn't only ready for it, it is large enough to accommodate us all. But my experience with a few of my clients is that starting is easy... but reaching that height of excellence n maintaining it, isn't a joke! I believe is it scientifically sound to study failure as well as success, in order to succeed. agree? I believe that a website, whatever form u wanna call it, is an incredible asset! But just how do we make ours such an asset. 1. set goals for marketing and campaigns. explore all the means of marketing... social media, bill board, word of mouth (referrals), email campaign.. m so forth. make sure that your presence is felt... do it with a personality. I mean not like you want to collect our money... like you care and have something to offer. use strong graphics to pass your message... interact with your clients. 2. set mid-term n long-term goals too. 3. never not be online. either u hire professionals or do it yourself. 4. be excellent n efficient. 5. ur site must b easy on the eye. hope it helps a little more... I didn't want to go into tiring details... you can reach me for more details on admin@tha247webguy.com visit www.tha247webguy.com for more details. |
