@soft777 Oga mi, I don't think sir Robonski would be able to send just 1000 fingerlings to port harcourt as I see it isn't too convenient for him. On the pond I thought non-hollow 6 inches blocks would be better as the 9 inches blocks are mostly hollow and filling with concrete would be money waste. I would adopt the double plastering technique u adviced.
Can u give me a name or brand I could use as reference when buying the waterproof cement.
can the tillapia fries find their way out of the happa net for easier collection without disturbing the brood tilapia and what is the mesh size of the happa net to be used?

If the capacity of ur biofilter is 45000 L, then i think it will be just fine since the combined volume of both ponds is far less than 45000 L.
( 1 cubic foot holds 28.32 L ).
(Cubic vol = L * B * H )

the mason (who came highly recommended by expert catfish farmers in owerri) claimed there was no need to put pillars in the corners of the pond. Also, it appears he did not lay the foundation of the ponds on level floor and some part of the concrete blinding was weak.

Soon after completion of the plastering and plumbing, I saw crack lines in a lot of places running right down to foundation level.
So I had to engage him to break all the places with crack lines right down to the foundation level, place steel In it and cast concrete columns. Also, I chose some strategic points and had him break them down and cast concrete columns in them.
Unfortunately that was all I cud do and I hope it works.
I wud have liked to chain all the pillars together at 3blocks level from foundation but that will practically be equal to building new ponds. I don't have dat kinda cash on ground. The ponds are 6 nos of 7ft x 14ft and 4ft deep each.

I will definitely love to buy. I have actually finished construction. I posted some pictures some time ago during construction.
However, I am trying to do some corrective and reinforcement work on the ponds cos I noticed some defects. Will try to post pics soonest cos I need advice too

OK Rob will do, I will take pix from the initial look till the final result, the site of the hatchery was formerly a pig slaughter that hasn't been used in over 8yrs so am clearing it up and disinfecting, the advantage to me here was the raised slabs so siphoning Fry's will be easy.

Oga Robonski, I called ur manager yesterday to place order of 1500 from Ilorin, he said d quantity is small and can not be supplied even though am ready to share the transport fair as indicated on of ur post. I want if it's d instruction you gave him cos if it is, it's not fair to upcoming farmers who can't afford large quantity, please try correct dt please.

There is land already. With a stream running behind it.
Plan to use a concrete pond so that I can drain and see my fishes well being regularly as the earthen pond are mostly not transparent
Infact every thing is ready except capital for construction of pond and feeding.

I wish to express my delight and thanks to you all for your support. I came here some few weeks back and complained about my fries dying after day 6, and I embraced the advice gotten on this thread. It will delight you all to know that I hatched again and my fries are approaching the third week!! They are very active, strong and above all I can say my result is 90% successful. (from hatching to wek 3). I estimate they are well over 10,000! (Will upload pix later).

However, I need more clarifications on my hatchery design. I intend to make more hatching vats, and will like inputs from experts on this matter. I currently have 3 wooden vats of 6ft by 3ft. but I’m considering using plastic tanks i.e (white tank or black GP square tank). Please guys which will you advice? And please give reasons. I have seen a couple of guys on this forum using the white tank and I wonder if it won’t be difficult siphoning due to its depth. I await suggestions.

Good morning gentlemen I recently went into catfish farming, and I have been following your write-ups having read from page 1 till219, I must say this blog has been highly educational. I have 1 tarpaulin ponds 15x15 and 4 12x12 ponds which I have just stocked 4000 post fingerlings into. I am currently constructing a mini hatchery based on designs from Robonskis' and fleur and noorjen design. I am hoping to get all the support from fellow farmers in the house. What is the recommended maximum stock for the following size earthen pond, we get natural water from the ground and we also have a borehole to change water every 2 weeks. The pond also have outlet and inlet pipes to maintain constant flow through of water all the time.

I am looking to stock 6,000 per cycle starting with 3,000 each in pond 1 and 2 and then finishing them in Pond 3 and 4. Will these pond be big enough?

Used to raise from fingerling to 2 months the we transfer to pond 1 and 2...

Pond 1 35 feet by 25 feet depth 5 feet - Currently 3,000

Pond 2 13 feet by 27 feet depth 7 feet - Currently 3,000

Used to raise from 2 months to 4.5 months

Pond 3 40 feet by 36 feet depth 7 feet - Currently 3,000

Pond 4 45 feet by 35 feet depth 5 feet - Currently 3,000

Yes you are right, like i said i never thought of doing that i still hope it will grow back. besides its now day 5 still doing well. I will put everything into practice in my next hatching.

Though am still struggling with the PH of my water (within the range of 4-5.7) and electricity is another thing entirely, am just looking for a suitable method to buffer the PH to 6.5 and avoiding flow through, possibly i will have to come up with my own McDonald jar. And much thanks to Olalekan Josh on AGRICNETWORK, with his article i was able to culture my own Daphnia. I have learnt whole lot on this thread and agricnetwork. to the whole house i say a wonder thanks to you all, keep sharing and keep learning, God will bless you all.

# drain d water, mix potasium or formalin n pour on dem,after 15mins mix oxcy-veto n pour on dem now leave dem 4 1- 2hrs, wen it's lik 30mins to pump in fresh water, salt d walls of d pond n some on dem. Will advice u do dis in da evening. Goodluck

Bitter experience I need all farmers to learn from...there is this certain woman who sells fish...at first wen she came to my farm to purchase my fishes, I told her plain blank tat I don't sell on credit...she started patronising and paying all sum just to gain my trust, then she introduced a credit scheme of her taking my fishes and paying after 3 days,I was scared of goin into it but since she has done more than 70k purchase with me, I just gave her a trial which am still battling today...she started abusing the credit facility, she doesn't pay on time and I wd have to be begging for my OWN money to be paid. As am posting this thread, she is owed me 1500 of 7500 being 15kg of fishes she toke from my farm 2 month ago. She is hell bent tat she won't pay me, I wd make sure I involve t police even if I ve to spend 5k to get my 1500. I want her to knw one Naira matters to ones biz...

My advice...NEVER sell ur fish on credit. Sell to them the amount they ve wt them.
