slimfit042: even if i dig a well i ll still need to buy water to fill it especially during the dry season. or shld i reduce it to 7 days. maybe i shld forget the bussiness because i cnt afford a borehole in my area.Enugu. you will also require two of those ponds, if you can divide the fishes 350 each and change the water every seven days |

Oga robonski, thank you for your response. What I meant by the deep well is that the well is a hand dug by this so called abokis. its very deep that it contains 18 rings. In dry seasons, people in the environs use to fetch and fetch and it never gets dried but I really don't know the volume of water been generated by the well and I want to know the number of fishes it secretion could sustain. Thank you sir Bro i cant say how many fishes the well water can sustain, you just have to try it out sir.. Is the area a sandy? www.agricnetwork.com |

jaz: oga mi, seems some numbers are lost in your quote oo. could you please fill in the gaps ? For earthen pond: width x breath x depth /3 multiply by 2 concrete pond: width x breath x depth /3 multiply by 5 Example. 10 feet by 10 feet with a depth of 4 feet how many fish can we stock in a concrete pond 10 x 10 x 4= 400... 400/3= 133.33..... 133.33 x 5 = 666 fishes |

jaz: I have a question though; what size of pond is adequate for 5000 catfishes to table size, both concrete and earthen ponds in ft dimension. concrete and earthen pond differ Earthen pond: width x length x depth ................................ x 2 3
Concrete pond: width x length x depth ............................. x 5 3 |

mercylicious: So u are just knowing now? That guy is 3much.
At Abix, is there a different formulae fo the feed for a month old fish or is it still the old formulae u gave? Do u start the month old with 2mm feed? I was doing some findings the other day and I categorised some wonderful fish farmers...ab1x For feed formulation, excelsior for overall management, lagbaja for outstanding technology, Tokugawa for the construction of ponds earthen/concrete, Juvefarms for production of fries. I don't think anybody can beat this team |

sosolid007: Hello All,
Before I start let me say a BIG THANK YOU TO Robonski and Ab1x for all the information you have provided. I actually started my farm last year having read your forum
I am a follower and I have tried everything you have said and I can say it all worked, I harvested last week.
Few mortality basically 2 to maturity once i sorted to the earth pond. I have 3 earth ponds for now but increasing it to 9 by end of the month.
My source of water is stream water ,each ponds has its own inflow and outflow
Some questions to ensure that I am still on the right track.
I buy fingerlings once they are 3 weeks old rear them for 2 months on coppen and transfer them to my earth pond which is 25 x 40 and accommodates 800 fishes. Can the size accommodate more than 800?. Am I over stocking or under stocking? Please give me the capacity for 25x40. i want to stock 1000 in each pond and want to know the size to use.
Also, AB1X I read your formula and want to start using your formula in my next production phase but want to know if it is something one can buy from you in bulk. let me know. I harvested after 6 months and they are averaging 1.3kg but some say that is not good. I think i might have under feed them or my people sometimes are not putting the right quantity to make the feeds Please see pictures of my harvest. Hence, the reason I want to use your formula for my next production if you produce in bulk.
Also, which is best Ziggler or coppens . I use coppen already. What is your personal experience with ziggler.
Also, for fingerlings for the 1 month and half what size of coppens did you give them?
Since, I am increasing to 9 ponds i am doing bore hole. Which size of tank should i get for 9 earth ponds. Though they will have natural stream water. I want to do it as a back up for dry season. should i also buy a filter for the borehole water, is it necessary?
Finally, how much will it cost to build a standard/professional hatching facility.
Thanks and look forward to your response ab1x has done justice to your questions. But for feeding aspect I have used both coppens and zeigleI but i prefer zeigler gold to coppens any day. But the most important is your overall management cos you can use both feed and still fail if proper management is not in place.. when you are ready for the hatchery let me know. Thanks |

bababuff: Are you saying 6mm is too big for them at 3months? But they do eat the 6mm.
I do give them vitamins every 2 weeks.
The juveniles were sourced from a fish farmer close to my place in Gbagada. 6mm is too big for them, with the size I saw in the pix 3mm or 4.5 mm is ideal. |

Dorammy: Help! Its my fist time, although I dnt ve any training yet I wish to do so as soon as I find a place to train. I started with 300 fingerlings, in a plastic tank, bt lately I am recording lots of mortality. Jst came back nw and saw five floating! Dead! They r 3 weeks n 3 days old. I was feeding dem chi feed, then I switched to coppens 2 days ago 0.8mm is it too big? Or too small? And wat else should I add to d water? Did my firrst sort this week. Pls help me. D attached pix was taken d day I brought dem, Hmmmmm, What is the size of the plastic tank and how many do you have?? Bring them all out of the tank and wash the tank thoroughly with detergent and rinse well water. Go get aquapro, aquaceryl, FLOXINOR or OXYVETO anyone you can lay your hands on and add to the water, they should be fine.
The fishes look like post fries to me and not fingerlings give them 2mm for now, then later switch to 3mm, 4.5mm and 6mm. |

bababuff: 2. We feed them 3 times a day. 3. We change their water everyday for all the ponds in the morning. 4. We feed them a bag of Coppens 6mm for about 3 weeks (to me that's not feeding well for about 500 fishes) 5. Pond-1 holds 250, Pond-2, 150, Pond-3 150 fishes. 6. Water level is usually higher than in the picture
I have been told to give them fish tonic, but i don't know which brand to buy. I will strongly advice you switch back to 3mm to help boost their growth back.. 6mm is too big for them to pick. also give them multivitamin. where did you get the juveniles from? |

korel9: I dnt know if I'm qualified to respond to your question owing to d fact that we have professors in da house. But based on my little experience so far 1. There's a possibility that you were sold runts which may lead to slow or no growth. 2. What's their feeding culture like? 3. How often do you change their water? 4. Do they eat well? 5. How many do you have stocked in there? 6. That water level seems low to me judging from this angle.
Thess are my observations and questions u might need to respond to. I don't know if our professors in the house can add to these and even correct where I'm wrong. Cc robonski15, abix et al

keemaQ: About 3 years ago, I stocked just a thousand fishes and failed terribly, I wasn't really perturbed because this failure was a learning in disguise, I met a guy on here(nairaland) he sold me runts.. My very good friend deceived me in stocking a thousand fishes in a space I would stock just 100 fishes if I were to re start my fish business. My challenges then were literally the most challenging ones.
- Space - water - Good fishes
Fast forward three years, A friend's neighbor that used to come check my kekere pond then found the business both viable and interesting and is ready to invest big and wants me involved.. I'm just a bit nervous if I can manage 10,000 fishes from my 1000 fishes experience. Bro to be honest managing 10k fishes is not easy especially for someone that is not that established in the business, it takes a whole lot to manage 10k fishes. I will Advice you seek and work/learn with a good and experienced consultant who can manage the fish till harvest then you can handle it yourself.. |
