Oga Robonski, This your project remind me of how we can combine tilapia and catfish in the same pond such that tilapia will serve as foods to the catfish. Pls, how can we do this successfully without overstocking a earthen pond of 34 by 45 feet. At what stage can one introduce tilapia into the pond. And, at what proportion? I learnt that tilapia fishes mature and lay eggs at a very short time. Oga excelsior, Ab1x and other gurus, pls I need your responses on this. tx.

My question to Teepompey, ab1x and others.
please i want to start formulating my feed considering the high cost of fish feed nowadays and the ingredients are no issues to me as i have them in abundance (I farm most of them except fish meal). My problem is the machine to use and the problem of making it float.
I have been browsing to find out which machine will be suitable and at affordable price. but i just cant buy a machine without knowing full well how it works. if possible i have to see and hear from someone who uses it.
please any input on how my problem can be solved?

At last, i will be contributing on this tread. My 0.7-0.8kg of female broods use to give almost 10 thousand fingerlings, and that of 1.5-2.0kg i have recorded severally after giving out 10% mortality rate. To answer your questions

1. The female broods usually have there belly protrude. without even checking the egg you would know instantly that the are females. You need to test striped them and make sure their nucleus is visible, the eggs are either greenish or brownish.
2. sometime we get more than 70% percent here but this is achieved with kin seriousness and observations, what kill fries most of time that i have observed is over ambition; many of our breeder has capacity that can only produce less than 5000 fingerlings at a go..instead of them to use smaller fish the will go the one which can 20k. overpopulation kills more than anything in hatching business, its bring about infection, low growth...economy lrost and most of all rob breaders their sleep

1. By your definition of floating feed, you mean pelleted industrial feed such as, coopens, multifeed, Zeigler, and Durantee, Aquafeed, Vital feed that are produced by foreign and local feed manufacturers for farmers.
The advantages include:
a. Minimal wastage
b. Reduce water pollution
Disadvantage:
a. Expensive compare to locally made feed
b. Formula is constant and cant be manipulate by farmer
c. Some locally made feeds perform better than most imported feed

Yes sir,I tried spawning with a male n female (both clarias) and it was a success. Got to learn some things like my newly hatched fries passing thru d net at d outlet n escaping (no wonda dey kept reducing then) ..lol...they are 3 weeks n 2 days today and currently feeding on coppens 0.5mm but i noticed dey don't eat much like before..av tried giving them shebavit but no difference

Good work going on there , I wish you good success . my little contribution is that :
* make sure the plastic pipes used for drainage is the big type. Ie that type used for sewage.
* make sure that the pond floor slopes towards the drainage pipes buried at the edge of the pond, so as to allow total drainage.
* make sure that cement use is well sufficient. Let them not manage especially the cement to be used in the inner covering of the pond should be high, it will make it last .
* make your gutter layout that can accommodate all the ponds to be built both now and the future.
* have a map of where the overhead tanks is going to be that can supply your ponds with water in any emergency need .
* have a place designed for the Iya eleja... Market women so they don't come too close to your ponds. For safety reasonsreasons
That's my 1kobo suggestion you can also take the pictures as a guide( plus or minus as you want)

To get the best result in a recirculatory system, you need to combine bio filtration with sedimentation. Sedimentation removes the coarse materials coming from the water which includes the fish poo and left over food. Durante sells plastic bio filtration and sedimentation equipments. Thanks for the compliment. The farm site is at Nkwelle ezunaka, Anambra state.Borehole will be dug, Drainage will be a challenge cos the place is not yet developed. The farm is mine as hubby said o. keep your ideas coming
