Dear all,

Please i intend to start my fish farming with an existing pond 9ftx9ftx8ft (initially constructed soakaway, but never been used),picture attached for your reference

1. What specie of fish do you recommend i start with and how many fish can i keep in the pond, i've ordered 600 fishes @ N21/fish from my adviser
2. I intend to use a surface pumping machine to drain out dirty water at intervals, how often do i need to do this? can this system work in your opinion
3. I intend to cover the soakaway with net to avoid birds pick up fish from the pond, hope this would not reduce circulation of air and result in loss of oxygen
4. I'm not always available at the house, i have a mutual agreement with someone to take care of the fish while i'm not around, what do you think
5. This is a pilot test to see the feasibility, what will you advice,
6. My budget for the pilot scheme is around N40,000 (fish N12,600, pond cover N15,000 and basic plumbing N11,600) excluding feeding, from all i've read feeding seems to average between N350-450/fish i.e N270k overall
7. What are the do's and don't peculiar to my situation

hello sir! have been record serious mortality in my pond this days and I don't knw what is likely problem and have giving them series of anti biotic yet they keep dying.... I bought 5000 pies of fries but they can't more than 2k now. I shuld have cry for help since but I don't have browsing fone at the moment.

Hi, u can start with a thousand fish,of which u can feed them comfortably till maturity with the available facility..After your first harvest u can increase your stocking...

first I no be madam am a dude, it is not blame passing, it was one of her staff that later admitted it indirectly, my dad has two ponds and my sister two, same feeding water and all other conditions. Just 2months and the juvenile my dad stocked from another source is almost the size of my sisters own at 4months.. Thanks for your response, the price you stated is it for retail or wholesale price because they are calculated per kg for wholesale and almost all the different buyers contacted wont go beyond 600/kg ( more like they decided it in a union meeting)

God bless you sir Robonski, i want to use it as a pond for keeping fish, but instead of pumping water into it directly from bore-hole, i will run-off used water from the other ponds through an open gutter every 2-3days. The issue is that the land is locked on every side with no access to drainage and since the new ponds are big i.e 10*12*5 each, i am looking for a way to drain the water without flooding the land.

Pls i need to know if any body has used a soakerway-type pond before i.e a pond of about 10ft deep with cemented sides but the floor is uncemented. I am building two new concrete ponds and i am afraid that i might have a problem draining the water. So i need a soakerway to drain water. Pls anybody who has experience on this type of pond can assist. Thanks

Good evening guyz.....First, i want to appreciate everyone that have contributed immensely to this great thread---You have impacted on alot of Nigerians with this selfless service and God will surely reward you in a bigger way.

Let me share my little experience on here as a learner. I stocked 100 Juvenile on September 2 2017 in a small pond of 5*5*3 being L*B*D and being a pilot project, i fed them with foreign feeds which i bought in KGs(i.e. 2kg or 3kg as the case maybe). This makes the cost of feeding to be higher than expected. After two month, precisely 66days, i changed to Blue crown feed (locally made by a coy related to Olam) and i harvested the stock today being 31 December 2017 after 120days. I only sold 42 Kg in total and consumed about 12kg. about 15 of the fish are below 300 grams as at today so i left them in the pond.
Sales-Cost gave me a profit of N2,170----I wont call this a profit because i did not depreciate the fixed asset and did not pay myself but i learnt alot...
The following were my mistakes
1) I bought the Juvenile at a very high price of N30
2) The first feed was sold to me by my supposed mentor (who sold d seed for me) at N1500/kg for 2mm skretting.
3) There were fingerlings that could not pick 2mm in the stock sold to me, had to buy 1.5mm after 3weeks of stocking.
4) I did not sort at all so there was alot of cannibalism. very much.
5) Another thing that contributed to cannibalism was underfeeding/not feeding timely (because i'm not always around to feed, my wife did 80% of the feeding)
6)The purchase of 1kg of feed instead of buying bags of feed.( E.g i bought 3mm aqualis for 600/kg while its 493/kg if you buy a bag)
7)There were times that we also overfeed thereby wasting feeds......

The fish were only sick once and that was when i changed their feed to Blue crown and did not changed their water for about 3days. I treated them with salt only and things went back to normal.

I already stocked another 500 fingerlings on November 5 and i have improved on all the points noted above except that i did not take note of the differences in size when i bought them. Now they are in 3 different ponds according to their sizes but i must tell you that they are doing really fine.

hello great farmers in the house, I noticed maggots inside 3mm and 4mm prime feed that I am using now. pls does it mean that the feed is no longer good? expiry date is 09--08-- 18

please, I have just decided after reading some of your posts to build a concrete fish pond next year. it would be divided into two sections with each measuring approximately 6'*12' on the outside with 9" blocks. it would be approximately 4' high, I want to start in one pond and share them Into two when sorting.please how many fishes do you suggest I should buy.I hope I have not confused you with my explanation. thank you and remain blessed.

1. What quantity of Coppens feed (0.8-1.5mm) can take 5000 post fries to juveniles (or probably for 6weeks).
2. can 17*8, 8*6 $8*5 (all in feet) tarpaulin ponds take 5000 post fries to 0.6kg melange, if No plz suggest.

I intend stocking 3500 from this stock after six weeks.
