Motorcyclists in Nigeria have been wearing dried pumpkin shells on their heads to dodge new laws forcing them to wear helmets, authorities have said.

Officials in the northern city of Kano said they had stopped several people with "improvised helmets", following this month's introduction of the law.

Road safety officials said calabash-wearers would be prosecuted.

Thousands of motorbikes have been impounded around the country and drivers have staged protests.

Calabashes are dried pumpkin shells more commonly used to carry liquid.

Kano Federal Road Safety Commission commander Yusuf Garba told the BBC they were taking a hard line with people found using the improvised helmets.

"We are impounding their bikes and want to take them to court so they can explain why they think wearing a calabash is good enough for their safety," he said.

Fifty motorbikes had been seized so far in Kano city alone, he added.

Menace

Motorcycle taxis, called "achaba" in the north of the country and "okada" in the south, are a cheap way for Nigerians to get around congested and chaotic city streets.

Baby girl born on US-bound flight
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7807001.stm

A Ugandan woman has given birth to a baby girl on board an international flight from Amsterdam to Boston after going into labour mid-flight.

The six-pound (2.7kg) baby named Sasha was delivered on New Year's Eve with the help of two doctors on the eight-hour-long Northwest Airlines flight.

Mother and baby were taken to a Boston hospital on landing and are doing well.

Sasha was deemed a Canadian citizen for customs' purposes because she was born over Canada's airspace.

The rare trans-Atlantic birth was greeted with cheers and applause from passengers on board flight 59, reports said.

The excitement began some six hours into the flight, when the Ugandan woman who was eight months pregnant went into heavy labour.

Flight crew located two doctors on board the plane, and the woman gave birth to Sasha at 0900 Boston time (1400 GMT) - some 90 minutes before touch down.

"Everybody was there to help," Dr Natarajan Raman, who helped deliver the child, told the Boston Globe.

"People offered baby food, people brought things, people vacated their seats, The spirit of America is alive," he added.

The mother's identity - as well as her reasons for travelling so late into her pregnancy - were not clear. She was said to be travelling with a toddler and a friend.

Well i am a suprised here for people to think Dora is a messiah. I never thought of her like that. she is as greedy as most of us Nigerians. all we hear about is Dora Akinluyi in NAFDAC. is she the only person in NAFDAC? who is the second in command? does that tell you anything about her? if she was not greedy and really did a fantastic job in NAFDAC, why did she have to lobby for a ministerial post in this deluded Government we have? Did Gani not just refuse a national honour? did Wole soyinka not resign froom FRSC?If she is so smart, intelligent and forthright as most of her pundist proclaim, how come she so dull not to know that she will not do much with the present "dead" Government? your answer pariotism right? . Patriotism my foot . she has been shot a couple of time and in one occasion the police actually claimed that they shot her just to be able to justify releasing who the chief culprit is. She is there for one thing , THE MONEY. please stop praising her . just give some time and you will hear of all her dirty deals . I am not trying to run her down here but she is not what you think she is. she lobbied for health minister and she is now been compensated with information minister and you guys know what will happen. Misinformation . Its not by force to serve especailly when the conditions are not conducive . enough said

I think we need an "Obama" as President, one who can choose intellects in their fields to fill required positions, Yaradua (sorry to say) is "dulling" Nigeria.
Why should a Pharmacist with a PhD be used as an information minister? what happened to the ministry of health? or even women affairs.
Obama, even before inauguration has chosen the very best team to work with, which shows he his focused, rather Yaradua is still there sampling people and reshuffling his cabinet like he has all the time in the world.

My people, time waits for no one.
