Nice, Nnewi to Awka deserves to be dualised too, and maybe Nkpor to nnobi spur too

objpmb:
It is true. Soludo said in Awgbu he told federal government to dualize the stretch of road which is a federal road or give him permission to dualize it and that he received the approval of federal government to go ahead with the road project. So he said he will dualize the road.

Anambra State set to dualise the Amawbia-Ekwulobia-Uga Road terminating at Akokwa, Imo State; to enhance the transportation network in Anambra State, and promote connectivity, as well as foster economic development in the region. - Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

Who can confirm if this is true.

Anambra to Build Entertainment Hub at Its Airport

The management of Anambra State International Cargo Airport, Umueri has disclosed that the state government plans to build entertainment hub at the airport premises to drive non-aeronautical revenue.

The Managing Director and CEO of the airport, Martins Nwafor made this known to THISDAY in an interview and said that the state government would develop a very large area at the entry of the airport for the entertainment hub.

Nwafor said that the facility would attract businesses and a lot of people who would enjoy the offerings at the hub without getting into the restricted area of the airport.

He said that this is how many airports in the world develop non-aeronautical revenue sources by building different businesses that will attract people who will money and pay for charges like car park, facility entry tickets and others.

“We are planning to develop a very large area. If you’re used to the airport, once you drive past the gate, you will drive to almost another 500 to 600 meters before you get to the car park of the airports. There is a very large expanse of land there. It is marked for an entertainment hub. In the entertainment hub, there are a whole lot that will take place there. The hub is intended to attract a whole lot of people into the airport without necessarily getting to the proper landing area of the airport. They can have their recreation, enjoy themselves, listen to music and drink while enjoying the theme of the hub. We can also have a small theatre for film and stage performance going on there. We are also looking out for investors to help us in developing that more. We’re consulting to get that done. We have the eatery already given out for construction. That is also facing the entertainment hub,” the Managing Director said.

Nwafor said that contrary to general believe that state owned airports are not profitable, the plan laid out by the Anambra state government and the management of the airport, the Umueri airport will generate revenue that will sustain its operation, adding that the airport which has only operated for one year and seven months would not only fund its operations but would generate profit to the state government to justify the investment.

“At the Anambra international passenger and cargo airport, we are not in any way a waste to the state, to Nigeria and the general aviation system globally. Some may actually not be profitable because of the way they were conceived, but I can assure you that Anambra International Cargo & Passenger Airport was well conceived and initially was a project between the Anambra state government and orient petroleum resources. However, the construction of the airport was eventually carried out by Anambra state government alone and before that was done, there was a business plan outside the fact that there was a crude oil discovery by orient petroleum resources in the Anambra area where the airport was sited. It was precisely sited at Umueri in the Anambra east local government.

Just like I said, we had a business plan and that plan is working out right now. We’re just a year and seven months old and as we go on, I am going to show you what we have done. And of-course, you’ll understand that profitability of an airport is not something you can talk about in one moment, it takes a while for you to talk about the profitability. For the viability, yes. I would not say we are not viable because there are indications to show that we are viable. In the first place, the Anambra people do a lot of travels. It is predominantly business people. Our airport is located at the point where the farthest distance in Anambra state to the airport is about 30-35 minutes. We are closer to Onitsha, the business hub of not just South-eastern Nigeria, but Nigeria as well. Nnewi is about 30-31 km away and Awka city of the capital of Anambra state.

The Managing Director said that at the moment, there are two major scheduled airlines that operate into Anambra state and that is the largest airline in Nigeria today, Air-Peace and United Nigeria Airlines. These airlines operate six days in a week, adding that Air-Peace has daily operation, one inbound from Lagos and one outbound to Lagos and an inbound from Abuja and one outbound to Abuja. While United Nigeria airlines which initially started like Air-Peace, but maybe due to shortage of equipment presently does four days in a week same way, inbound Lagos, outbound Lagos, inbound Abuja and outbound Abuja.

“So, the Air-Peace uses the E2 Embraer 195 and sometimes the Boeing 737-500/300 series while United Nigeria operates with Embraer 145. But don’t forget that when we started the operation into this airport on the 7th of December 2021, we had some restrictions and at that time, they were both operating Embraer 145 until sometime in march, 2022 when we obtained approval for Boeing 737 equivalent due to the improvements made in fire service, we brought in the three brand new Zeigler fire trucks from Germany. Then, of-course,employed additional Category 9 (CAT-9) fire service personnel. Based on that we began to operate Boeing 737 and its equivalent.

According to the Managing Director, the passenger traffic at the airport is still less that its full potential because the airport still operates Visual Flight Rule (VFR), which means that flights cannot land at the airport in the night.

Yh, Also dualising The Onitsha|Nkpor to Nnobi Road and Nnewi - Nnobi to Awka expressroad with a flyover at Nnobi Junction connecting the four major cities Onitsha|Nkpor axis, Awka, Nnewi and Ekwulobia aswell through Ichida - Igbo ukwu link Road

ChimaAdeoye:

God willing, Soludo will build a similar flyover at other nightmarish traffic choke points around the state. Such as Nnobi junction etc. So that the dream of connecting all Anambra cities seamlessly into one mega-metropolis can be realized.

I understand, i knw the road is wide enough to accommodate three vehicles
But there is different wide road and dual carriage way
Dualizing the road would have change the narrative since its a major road that connects many LGAs

AmericanQuarter:

I understand your point. The road under construction from Awa to Amansea is a wide road though it doesn't have a divider at the center.

The New 3-A new axis of prosperity us cool but it'd have make more sense if The two Roads that connects the northern and southern part of the state are dualized

AmericanQuarter:
As a Government, we are conscious with our drive in ongoing new Awka capital city. In the "People's Manifesto" we talked about the "triple A" axis of Awka-Amansea-Awa, as the new axis of prosperity. Already, the road from Ufuma-Awa-Amansea to Awka is at over 90% completion level.

Typical of our people, I am delighted to see the fast rising New Awka city joining up seamlessly with the Southern part of the state (Ufuma-Awa-Ndiukwuenu), and sprawling into the Northern part through the Amansea-Ebenebe corridor.

Today we toured the Awka Millennium City, Golf residence and the Aguaba GRA. These locations provide the perfect ambience for the evolution of decent housing with complete streets in the capital territory development area.

This is no longer a dream, the reality is upon us, and I see it clearly.

Anambra will continue to win!

As seen on top 100 Africa cities Wikipedia
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Africa_by_population

As for South East
Onitsha 47th in Africa and 7th in Nigeria
Nnewi 64th in Africa and 9th in Nigeria
Aba 67th in Africa and 11th in Nigeria
Owerri 82nd in Africa and14th in Nigeria
Umuahia 91st and Africa and 17th in Nigeria
Enugu 95th In Africa and 19th in Nigeria

Although I don't really believe those figures...
Onitsha alone is way above 1.5 million
Even the 22 world urban demographia estimated that onitsha is the 3rd most populated in Africa and 2nd In Nigeria with upto 7.9million populations

I think this 2023 census should be took serious and avoid any form of manipulations

I’ve been meaning to ask when the Soludo admin’ would kickstart the process of tapping into the huge diaspora it has as a way of financing some of the projects listed. Just seen something about it mentioned in the ’how we plan to make all this happen’ section. It wasn’t given much attention though and seems only to have been mentioned in passing! This scheme could guarantee the state gov’t at least $500 million a year if well driven and implemented, and should have been one of the hallmarks of the Soludo admin’!

Why i rooted for him was my belief in his capacity to think outside the box! So the state gov’t should get serious with tapping into its vast diaspora to help fund its projects delivery. I’m not from Anambra, yet can willingly invest £300 for the next three years in any scheme the gov’t comes up with, and i imagine there’d be tens of thousands more like me scattered all over the globe!

Today we activated the process of transforming Ekwulobia into a model city. I have flagged off the construction of a fly-over, a modern bus terminal, adjoining roads, security building, a fire Station amongst others, in the area.

This signposts our deliberate desire to reposition Ekwulobia as a fast emerging urban Centre.

Upon completion, this project will bring about ease of movement from Anambra into Imo State through the Uga-Akokwa corridor.

The project is handled by a reputable Company - AG Vision Construction Limited. The flyover which is about 300 meters long will span from Nanka to Uga. It is also about 5.4 meters tall, and is expected to be delivered in the next 18months.

Anambra will surely win!

Anambra Government Hands-Over Hectares Of Land To Seven Real Estate Developers For Housing Development Projects

By Blessing Uchendu (ABS Reporter)

Anambra State government has handed over hectares of land to real estate developers for different development purposes.

The event which was performed in Awka, was attended by representatives from the Anambra State Ministry of Lands, Anambra State Investment Promotion and Protection Agency, ANSIPPA, and of the host communities.

The real estate developers and hectares of land allocated to them are: CNN Urban Developers Limited 20 hectares, Rainbow Heritage Projects Services Limited -- 110 hectares, MIO Construction Company Nigeria Limited -- 15 hectares, Southern Matrix Projects Limited -- 20 hecters, Periwinkle Residences Limited -- 30 hectares, Treasure Garden Investment Limited -- 19 hectares and Romax Properties Limited -- 19 hectares.

The lands, which would be channeled to construction of housing development projects are located within Awka metropolis and Isiagu Community, all in Awka South Local Government Area.

While flagging off the handover, the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo said that housing is one of his administration's primary agenda, tailored to achieving the Smart Mega City vision and to also help close the housing deficit in the state.

Professor Soludo, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, said the projects with a timeline of three to four years will see the investors launch into world class real estate amenities and development services that will include roads, water and power projects, police posts, hospitals, schools and others.

The governor urged the developers to give their best in order to help achieve a liveable and prosperous Anambra State and noted that the projects will provide job opportunities for youths even as he called on host communities to give the developers adequate support.

On his part, the Anambra State Commissioner for Lands, Professor Offornze Amucheazi, said that out of the seventy two developers that submitted proposals, seven were selected, and assured the host communities that the initiative is in the best interest of all Ndi Anambra.

He noted that the drive is focused on the "New Awka" initiative, which is bringing in world class infrastructure into the capital city, and promised that the developers would be given every necessary support to succeed.

Earlier during the signing of the Public-Private Partnership Framework Agreement, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ANSIPPA, Mr Mark Okoye, said the housing development is expected to commence one month from date of handover of project sites to the investors and that all projects are expected to be completed before the first quarter of 2027, adding that the projects will serve as an example for other investors about what is possible in an investment-friendly Anambra State.

In their remarks, the Managing Director of CNN Urban Developers, Mr Wilson Thomas, that of Periwinkle Residencies Limited, Dr Chinedu Nweke and Mr Tony Epele of Southern Matrix Projects Limited, said that they are committed to ensuring that the projects will be executed in record time and in compliance with stipulations of the agreement.

In attendance at the event were the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Ms. Chiamaka Nnake, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, Mr Ossy Onuko, his Housing Development Corporation counterpart, Mr Chike Anyaonu and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands, Mr Edwin Ejike among others.

*First Anniversary of Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport*

By Paul Nwosu

The First Anniversary of Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport, Umueri is at once a cause for celebration and sober reflection.
It calls for celebration that such a magnificent edifice could be built against all odds, especially as the Covid-19 pandemic raged on and successfully began flight operations on December 7, 2021. The brand new airport built under administration of the immediate past governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, remarkably recorded 142 flights carrying 3,865 passengers in its first month of operation. The airport has ever since waxed quite strong by serving as a well-facilitated conduit for ferrying passengers ever since its commencement of flight activities. It especially saved the highly itinerant Anambra commerce-oriented people the trouble of having to travel to Asaba, Enugu or Owerri to catch flights to their business destinations.

The sober reflection on Anambra International Airport is that it is as yet a work in progress. The necessary hope is anchored on the multiform plans Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, has in place of turning the airport into an international showpiece for passengers and cargo haulage. Mr. Governors design of an Anambra Emporium for exports bears the imprimatur of the Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport.

Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike has given the promise that regular international flights may commence at the turn of the New Year. She disclosed that discussions are ongoing with some airlines in France, Germany and the United States for the commencement of the international flight operations.
In this busy Christmas season, the domestic passenger airlines, Air Peace and United Nigeria Airline, are busy flying full schedules into and out of Anambra State.

On the planned international front, initial studies have shown that from Anambra to Miami in the USA is just about eight hours of flight time. Transport Commissioner Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike said: We are engaging with the airlines to find out ways we can make it possible for airlines to carry passengers from Anambra to Miami directly.”

It is a universally known fact that commerce is the second name of Ndi-Anambra who are always open for business. Through the airport, Anambra businessmen and women are ready to build relationships and interface with their contemporaries around the world.

On the part of the government, Mrs. Igwebuike stressed: We are also looking for partners from airports around the world. We are new, and the advantage of being new is that we get to do things in line with international best practices. We are looking for investors and experts that will assist us in capacity-building. Also, we want to grow our revenue base.”

The Anambra aviation authorities are in advanced discussions with many local and international airlines, and Commissioner Igwebuike assures that “we are doing things systematically and learning from those who are already in the system. We do not believe in reinventing the wheel.” Mrs. Igwebuike further said: We have engaged with some companies in France, Munich, and now we are engaging the Maimi Dade County. We will seek a partnership or some sort of collaboration. We are going to acquire all the necessary footprints to make ourselves known.”

The grand plan is to make the Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport commercially viable. Through the Anambra Emporium, export revenue will start flowing into the state through the vast riches of exportation via the airport. Being in its first year, the airport is still in the process of growth. In due course, it will break even.

According to Commissioner Igwebuike, We have generated revenue from the airport for the government of the state. It is very promising from the way we are going and when we grow it the way we want to grow it, both the commercial arm and others, it will be self-sustaining. That is where we are going.”

The Anambra International Passenger and Cargo Airport is indeed an idea whose time has come.
