Education / Re: Soyinka Dispelled The Insinuation That He Graduated With Third Class by Rotimijoguntayo(m): 8:56pm On Mar 29, 2017
tosynomolara:

Soyinka Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has dispelled the insinuation that he graduated with third-class division.

He made this disclosure in Aboekuta on Sunday when he hosted secondary school students across the country as part of this year’s Open Door Series Project, an international cultural exchange programme.

Soyinka said that he graduated from the University College, Ibadan with a Second Class Upper.

He explained that although he had kept silent on the issue over the years, he decided to open up for the first time over the rumour as a mark of respect for the participants.

The programme was organised as part of activities to mark his 79th birthday.

Soyinka appealed to the students, particularly, those studying in the violence-prone areas of the north, not to be discouraged by the activities of Boko Haram sect.

He urged them to draw inspiration from the 16-year-old Pakistani girl, Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head on October 9, 2012 by Taliban fighters over her campaign for girl-child education in Pakistan.

Soyinka, who fielded questions from 79 student participants, charged them to cultivate zero tolerance for failure and strive to excel in all their endeavours.

“It might look very negative and hopeless, but we must not allow ourselves to be discouraged.

“The fact that people are still going to schools in those violence-prone areas shows that we should not be discouraged.

“You are not a complete human being if you are not educated, schooled or cultured.

“No matter what goes on around you, you must insist on your education.’’

Earlier, Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun, described Soyinka as a world citizen and encouraged the participants in the essay competition to emulate his life and be more studious.

Amosun commended the organisers and re-stated the commitment of his administration to celebrate prominent Nigerians whose lives have remained sources of inspiration to younger generation.

The event, tagged: “Memoirs of our future”, was organised by a Lagos based multimedia company, Zmirage, in conjunction with the Ogun State Government.

Education / Student Confesses To Cheating In WASSCE, Withdraws From UNILORIN by Rotimijoguntayo(m): 1:07pm On Sep 14, 2016
Authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State on Sunday said that they had accepted the voluntary withdrawal of a student, Jephtaph Abolarin, from the institution.
Abolarin, a 300-Level Sociology student, had written to the university confessing to cheating during his West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
Abolarin, who claimed he had become a ‘born again’ Christian, said continuing his university education, using an unmerited certificate was unjust and immoral.
He wrote the letter to the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Sidiqat Ijaiya, on August 5, 2016.
According to him, he wanted to withdraw from the school because he got his WASSCE through examination malpractice.
Reacting to the letter on Sunday, the university Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, confirmed the withdrawal of the student.
Akogun, who noted that the Senate of the university had accepted the withdrawal letter, added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, commended Abolarin for his repentance and sincerity.
The VC, Akogun added, wished Abolarin well in his future endeavour.
Part of Abolarin’s letter to the DVC read, “Just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will surely collapse, it is also certain that a career that is built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse. All through my secondary school days, I was just a church ‘goer’, without genuine salvation and the fear of God. As a result, I got my WASSCE result through examination malpractice.
“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ, which called for repentance and restitution.
“Sir, with deep conviction, I have realised that there is no point building my academic career on a faulty foundation; since the WASSCE result I got through malpractice is the basis in which my admission into this university was anchored.
“Therefore, I have decided to withdraw from the university and start all afresh", said the duo.

Politics / Accounts Of Ghost Workers Discovered In Kogi State by Rotimijoguntayo(m): 10:26am On May 26, 2016
The Staff Screening and Verification Committee set up by the Kogi State Government said it had uncovered over 3,000 bank accounts of ghost workers.
The Chairman of the committee, retired Brigadier General Paul Okuntimo, disclosed this to newsmen in Lokoja on Wednesday.
Okuntimo said 113 bank accounts belonging to three civil servants were also uncovered.
He said the committee identified a number of retirees who had been collecting pensions and at the same time drawing monthly salaries from the state government.
He added that many names of under aged persons were discovered on the payrolls.
He said the figures will definitely rise as the committee was just midway into the assignment.
Okuntimo said the committee frustrated attempt by a cartel in government agencies to use a member of the committee to perfect N20 million per month the cartel had been siphoning from government coffers.
According to the Chairman, the BVN has proved to be one of the major instruments the committee relied on in realising its terms of reference.
He said the committee had categorized all the workers screened so far into three groups of successful, controversial and failed.
He pointed out that the committee will be releasing the names of cleared workers in batches.
He listed Ankpa, Dekina, Okene, Idah, Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ibaji, Bassa as some of the local governments where the names of cleared staff will be released by May 26.
Okuntimo said the committee had no mandate to sack any worker, adding that it will at the end of the exercise forward its report to the state Governor, Yahaya Bello, who has the final say on the recommendations.
He, however, stated that workers with forged certificates, fake letters of appointment and “ghost workers” who had been collecting salaries from federal and the state governments will have to go.
He said: “There are some workers that are genuinely employed, but they don’t go to office to work at all and they have been collecting salaries for years.
“They are mostly in diaspora.
“We tracked them through their ATM withdrawals.”
Okuntimo said attempt to rubbish the work of the committee was being masterminded by external forces but that he would not give in to blackmail and intimidation.
He also said he had no problem with the leadership of the labour unions over the exercise, adding that he was not in any way disturbed by some negative comments coming from the labour circle.
He said: “Government and labour’s stand cannot be the same.
“While the labour is defending the sectional interest of workers, government is more concerned with general wellbeing of the people and the future of the state.”

A clinical psychologist can surely help you out. Try one in your vicinity. Trial will convince you. Mind you, Nigerians are still ignorant of what psychologists do, refused to be discouraged, consult a clinical psychologist.

Religion / CAN President, Ayo Orijatsafor Tenure Expires Soonest by Rotimijoguntayo(m): 9:12am On Apr 08, 2016
In a few months, you will re-linquish your post as President of CAN, what is the preparation? There’s nothing I have to prepare than to do my handover notes. You will agree with me, Sir, that if there’s one institution in this country that has been so un-united it’s Christendom. What is on ground to wedge the broken walls? You are trying to get me to talk but I will not talk because I decided not to talk. It’s my decision. The only thing I will say to you is by the grace of God, in a few months time, I will have finished my mandate from God and from man to lead the Christians in Nigeria. By the grace of God, I want to also believe that CAN will still be there as an organization that has five blocks, five groups of Christians and it will continue from there. I think I have done my best and played my part and I’m sure others will come and take it from there and I pray for them that they will do better than I did in Jesus name. 0
