THE Rivers State Governor-elect, Chief Nyesom Wike, has indicated his readiness to probe the Rotimi Amaechi administration after being sworn in as the chief executive of the state. Wike, who gave this hint while receiving the interim report of the Transition Committee in Port Harcourt on Monday, declared that his administration would carry out a forensic audit of all government accounts. He explained that the measure would enable him to recover funds that might have allegedly been stolen by top officials of the outgoing administration in the state. Wike specifically said that those who participated in the use of N4.5bn to conduct a local government election by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, even when the court had stopped the exercise, would be made to account for their actions. The governor-elect maintained that RSIEC embarked on an illegal local government election despite the court’s position on the matter. Explaining that the days of impunity and corruption were over, Wike noted that Rivers would be a test case in the fight against corruption. He added that his administration would adopt a comprehensive approach in fighting corrupt elements in the outgoing administration in order to entrench fiscal discipline in the state. “I am not going to be intimidated. The only way we can work together is to check the ills of the past. The right thing must be done. Those who have stolen the resources of the state must be made to account for them. “I have the political will to drive the process to its logical conclusion. The massive stealing of government resources was a deliberate attempt to create problems for the incoming administration,” Wike said. The governor-elect declared that all backdated appointments and certificates of occupancy being hurriedly issued by outgoing governor would be set aside. “All the top officials of Amaechi administration who have refused to cooperate in the interest of Rivers State during the transition period will soon cooperate whether they like it or not. “Those who have closed the courts will be the same persons rushing to the courts when we open the courts,” Wike further declared. Earlier, the Chairman of the Transition Committee and state Deputy Governor, Mr. Tele Ikuru, had recommended that the new administration should carry out forensic audit of all accounts in view of an alleged looting by officials of the outgoing administration. Ikuru pointed out that Amaechi and top officials of his (Amaechi) administration refused to cooperate with the committee for a smooth transition. The deputy governor urged the governor-elect to work towards restoring basic services in the state. Reacting, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha, told our correspondent that Amaechi was not afraid of probe and added that the governor had been transparent and sincere in governing the state. Okocha argued that there was nothing wrong in probing any administration, but stated that the exercise would only becoming a vice should it (probe) be done with mischief in mind. “No government that is transparent and sincere like that of Amaechi will be afraid of probe. It (probe) is good to do except if it is originally intended to be a witch-hunt,” Amaechi aide said. Moro also congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan and Nigerians for the successful conduct of the 2015 general elections. The President-elect, Buhari was hailed for his electoral victory, as Moro, wished his administration good luck. The Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers, Mr Chris Finebone, said on Monday that the party was satisfied with the outcome of council polls held in the state. The APC won the 22 chairmanship seats, 297 of the 302 wards in the council election held on May 23. The remaining wards were won by ADC in Etche ward 3, PPA in Ahoada West Ward 2 while SDP won in Ahoada East ward 4 . Finebone told NAN in Port Harcourt that the election was credible, free and fair. ‘’ A total of 26 political parties took part in the election and we believe that the people have spoken through their votes,’’ he said. Stakeholders in the petroleum sector, at a public hearing organised by the Joint Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream and Downstream), on Monday resolved to mobilise their members for the immediate distribution of fuel across the country. Senator Magnus Abe, who read a communique duly signed by the stakeholders after the session, explained that the Finance Minister / Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and other stakeholders who attended the meeting, unanimously agreed to the peace deal, in the interest of the nation. He also explained that following the intervention of the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the strike embarked upon by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers and the Petroleum and Energy Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, had been called off. He said, “We have agreed on the following: first is that the Minister of Finance will give an undertaking to the Major Marketers and Depot Managers that the work of the committee being headed by CBN and PPPR, on the outstanding claims, would be concluded and be reflected in the hand over notes to the incoming administration.” He said the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria had agreed to begin lifting of Petroleum products nationwide within the next six hours and to also pay the National Association of Road Transport Owners, the transport cost that will be determined by them. He also added that the Depot Managers had agreed to open all their depots nationwide so that lifting would commence and had agreed with the DPR to withdraw the operational licence of any depot which was not opened for fuel lifting. Abe said the NNPC had directed all relevant staff working in the various depots across the country to work 24 hours including Saturday and Sunday for the next two weeks until normalcy returns to the sector. No fewer than 11 persons, including an 11-year-old boy, kidnapped across Ekiti State in the last three weeks were at the early hours of Saturday released by their captors. They included a lecturer at Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Dr. Folasade Alade; a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Dr. Femi Omisore; wife of a former Chief Medical Director of EKSUTH, Dr. Kikelomo Adegun, and a nurse with the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, Margret Aladeneka. Others were Biliaminu Abiola, Mrs. Lydia Agnes and her daughter, Mrs. Foluke Abiola, Mrs. Yemi Abiola, Mrs. Funmi Ogunlola, Mrs. Folake Adeniyi and Jimi Johnson. Governor Ayodele Fayose refused to answer on Saturday if ransoms were paid to secure the release of the victims. But a family member of one of the victims said they were released after their families had paid some undisclosed amount of money demanded by their abductors. She said the freed abductees were dropped at a bush in the Esure-Ekiti area of the state. Some of the victims have been taken to hospitals for treatment by their families after the Police arrived in the town. Another account said the victims were rescued by vigilantes at Esure-Ekiti, who later took them to the palace of the Elesure of Esure-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Ajibola. The traditional ruler of the town, Oba Adebanji Ajibola, said local hunters had located the kidnappers’ den through a tip off from a woman, who complained that she saw a suspected armed man in the bush. Oba Ajibola said, “Vigilance group located the hideouts of the kidnappers and they ran away. But we were able to rescue 11 of the victims and I asked the group to bring them to my palace. Once they got to my palace we took their names and they were all rescued alive. “We found the kidnap victims in the thick bush of Esure and Ika, Irasa and Ado roads. We started the rescue assignment since last week. The chiefs and I decided to use the local vigilance group to arrest the kidnappers. “The government said they were sending heavily armed security operatives to invade the bush but I advised against that, saying that they should allow us to use my men first, who would first of all comb the bush and once they have a clue of anything, we would then ask the police to swing into action.” The traditional ruler said the community and the police were on the trail of a man identified as Olumide, an indigene of Esure Ekiti and a certain man who had worked for sometime in this town for allegedly serving as accomplices to the kidnappers. Abuja – The Federal Government on Friday in Abuja raised alarm over dwindling and epileptic electricity supply across the country. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Mr Godknows Igali, made this known after a meeting with Vice-President Namadi Sambo to State House correspondents in Abuja. Igali, and Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Minister of Power, had briefed Sambo on the state of power generation, transmission and distribution in the country. \ He said the ongoing strike by Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas had further worsened the power supply situation. The workers were protesting the transfer of the operatorship of the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 42 to two indigenous companies, claiming the move would affect the fortunes of NPDC and its staff. “With the strike which has gone on for one or two days there is dramatic turn as of this afternoon we have gone down for the all time low to 1,327 megawatts. “So, if you look at it from 4,800 there is dramatic turn, the loss is terrible,’’ Igali said. He said as at 12 noon May 22, 2015, Utorogu, CHEVRON ORE DO, OB EN gas plants were all shutdown while UGHELI and CNL ESCRAVOS were already isolated. He said, “on the eastern axis Shell Gas, ALAKIRI has also been shutdown. This has led to the several power plants being stranded and shutdown. “This includes EGBIN, OLORUNSHOGO I & 11, OMOTOSHO 1& 11, GEREGU I & 11, IHONVOR and SAPELE (NIPP) on the western axis and ALAOJI on the eastern end.’’ According to him, besides, pipeline vandalism which has continued to have very negative impact on the power supply situation in the country, the ongoing strike by the labour unions in the oil and gas sector has added additional toll. “The overall effect is that power supply which had started picking up steadily since the beginning of the week following repairs of various vandalised portions of the ELP Line and the Trans-Forcados Gas Pipelines, has fallen to all-time-unprecedented low of 1,327m was at 1.00 p.m. May22, 2015. Motorists and residents of Lagos, who use petrol to power their generators, have cried out about the difficulties they are encountering while struggling to get the product. Our correspondent, who monitored the situation in different parts of the state on Thursday, reported that the number of filling stations that had the product to sell was reducing daily, while the few ones that had petrol in stock were capitalising on the scarcity to make excessive profits at the expense of consumers. Many filling stations have stopped selling the product on the excuse that they have no stock. It was observed that the few stations that had the product in stock had very long queues of motorists and other consumers, who had to wait for hours to buy the product, thus compounding the already chaotic traffic situation in the metropolis. As a result of this, most of the filling stations were selling petrol for as high as N150 per litre instead of the official price of N87 per litre. Most of the filling stations had adjusted their pumps to reflect the new prices they fixed. The strike by petroleum tanker drivers, who are members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, has grounded product loading at fuel depots across the country, thereby worsening the already bad petrol supply situation. Findings by our correspondent revealed that the PTD had also succeeded in setting up a surveillance team to enforce its no loading directive to all members and to punish anyone caught flouting the directive. The strike by the tanker drivers, according to market sources, is the major reason why most filling stations are without products. Our correspondent also gathered that some depots went ahead to load products in disobedience to the PTD directive on Monday. This, according to some marketers, informed the setting up of the surveillance team by the drivers’ union. Two marketers, who spoke to our correspondent in separate interviews, confirmed that petrol supply situation to filling stations from the depots had almost come to a halt. One of the marketers said, “There is no improvement on the situation. Nothing is happening at the depots and nobody is saying anything to bring sanity to the mess in the system. “The surveillance team of the PTD arm of NUPENG is going round the depots to ensure that nobody is loading.” It was also gathered that some marketers had moved to Abuja to seek solutions to the lingering problem. An industry source told our correspondent in confidence, “Some marketers are currently in Abuja waiting for the possibility of a meeting with key officials of the current government and the incoming government.” When our correspondent contacted the Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Thomas Olawore, on the telephone, he admitted to being in Abuja but would not disclose his mission to the seat of power. “Nobody is talking to us about anything. It is true that I am in Abuja now, but I will soon be on my way back to Lagos,” he said. But the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, insisted in a telephone interview with our correspondent that 1.2 billion litres of petrol had been pushed into the market from its last consignment. He said with the current daily demand for petrol and the stock of the product with the corporation, there was enough petrol to service the country for another 20 days. Alegbe said, “All the petrol the whole country has been consuming for a while now came from the NNPC. We have the product that can last for another 20 days pending when new consignments come in. “I think whatever questions Nigerians have should be directed to the independent petroleum marketers and the major oil Markets; not us.” Alegbe, who declined to make a categorical statement on the possibility of the marketers hoarding products, said it was crucial that Nigerians inquired from them the whereabouts of the product the NNPC had pumped into the system. The instruction from the PTD to its members on Monday read, “Comrades/unit chairmen/executives you are directed to suspend all loading activities in all the depots as from Monday 18th May, 2015. “There will be severe sanctions for any chairman/others that did not comply.” Our correspondent had gathered that the tanker drivers were advised to take the action by the marketers, who were owed subsidy arrears of over N200bn by the Federal Government, in order to force the government to liquidate the debt. The marketers are worried that they may lose money if the current government does not take full responsibility to liquidate the debt. There are strong indications that workers in 18 states may start an indefinite strike on Monday over unpaid salaries. The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday in Abuja, said that the congress had sent its task force team to various geo-political zones of the country. According to him, the strike has started in Plateau State, adding that a similar exercise will begin in Cross River State and others on Monday. The National Administrative Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress had, on March 19, 2015, set up a task force to pursue payment of salary arrears owed workers by some state governments. The report of the task force, which was exclusively obtained by our correspondent, showed that 19 states are owing salaries and pensions. Ozo-Eson told our correspondent that the NLC had sent its task forces to the affected states and directed those who were being owed to begin strike. He said, “The various Task Forces are working. Plateau is on strike, Cross Rivers is going on Monday; the various task forces are working. “A team is leaving for Benue to commence action; they are now free to commence action and we are supporting them.” The report of the Task Force of the NLC revealed that while some of the states had paid salaries of workers up to date, they were owing arrears of pensions running into months. The states owing salaries or pensions are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Cross River, Ekiti, Imo, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, and Kogi. Others are Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers and Zamfara states. However, a look at the report reveals that Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, the FCT, Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Sokoto and Taraba are not indebted to their workers. The report stated that Abia State had not paid salaries of workers of the State Teaching Hospital for nine months. The state is also said to be owing workers of the Hospital Management Board eight months’ salary; Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, six months; Abia State Polytechnic, five months; local government workers, four months; and teachers, three months’ salary arrears. It was stated that while Enugu State had paid salaries of civil servants up to date, parastatals were owed 12 months’ salaries and pension and gratuity remain unpaid since 2010. Others states owing are Osun State with six months’ salary and pension arrears; Plateau with six months salaries and seven months pension; Benue with five months salaries and four months pension arrears; Kogi with four months of pension and salary arrears; and Oyo which owes three months salaries and between five and 11 months of pension arrears. Also among the states which are likely to owe salaries and pension of workers into the incoming administration on May 29 are Ekiti with three months of unpaid salaries. Jigawa is owing judiciary workers a month salary arrears in 2015. Ondo owes one month salary and pension, while Ogun is owing one month salary and 52 months of unremitted pension deductions to the Pension Fund Administration. Although Zamfara State has paid workers’ salaries up to date, the salaries of workers who were recruited in 2014 have not been paid. The NLC Task Force also stated that Rivers State owes one month of workers’ salaries and three months of pension while Kano has yet to pay newly employed teachers for three months. However, the Task Force report was silent on the status of Yobe and Ebonyi on the ground that there was no information on them. The Ondo State Police Command on Thursday arrested three men in Akure for their alleged involvement in robbery. The suspects were said to have escaped from a prison in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, during the November 2014 jail break. Banji Adedayo, 40; Tope Daramola, 45; and Segun Akinseye, 38, according to the State Police Commissioner, Isaac Eke, were among the gang that had been terrorising the people of Ondo State in the recent times. Parading the suspects at the police command headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure, the commissioner explained that the trio, with two other men, allegedly snatched a Toyota Camry and some mobile phones from one Komolafe Remidayo in Ondo Road, Akure. He said the Special Anti Robbery Squad, acting on a tip-off, swung into action and arrested the suspects. Eke added that effort was in top gear to arrest the fleeing members of the gang and also recover the earlier snatched vehicle. One of the suspects, Adedayo, however denied being a member of the robbery gang, admitting that he escaped during the jail break in Ado Ekiki. President Jonathan might also be interested in compensating the octenagerian whose removal wasn’t initially approved by the President until his hands were tied by the powerful PDP Governors Forum. As the PDP moves towards reconciliation and rejuvenation, they might have to look in the direction of the elder statesman to lead them in forging ahead for the titanic political battle that awaits them in future.

A trusted ally of the President, Wali has the experience and maturity to galvanise the downtrodden members of the party nationwide for the task ahead in 2019. The current Minister of Foreign Affairs might just be the man the party need to kick-start a fresh onslaught to re-take its lost glory.

Anenih’s sacrifice is a pointer to the fact that the chieftains of the party are aware of the enormous task ahead of them and are ready to make individual sacrifices to ensure that the party bounce back to reckoning in Nigeria’s democratic journey. As it is, following Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu’s resignation as the party’s chairman, a South-South chieftain of the party is expected to take over. This is against the backdrop of the fact that the party will field a Northern candidate in the 2019 presidential elections to challenge President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, incase he decides to re-contest for the office of the presidency. Given this scenario, the PDP is likely to elect a northerner as its BOT Chairman, despite Anenih’s claims of stepping down for President Goodluck Jonathan. Not known as a typical politician, Jonathan is widely expected to reject the offer. 1. Alhaji Sule Lamido: He has the brightest chance among the lot. Everything favours him; he is a founding member of the party, at 66 years, he is matured, he is popular in the north and he can be a rallying figure for the party in the region and beyond. AS fuel scarcity continues nationwide, the Senate Thursday directed its committees on Petroleum Resources ( Upstream and Downstream ) to immediately commence investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the fuel crisis in the country. The Senate Order was sequel to the motion by the Deputy Senate Majority Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi, who had called on the lawmakers to pay serious attention to the fuel crisis that had created great hardship for Nigerians at the moment. Senator Ningi wondered why a country that has abundant oil resources should face the kind of biting scarcity that had increased the suffering of Nigerians. But the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, noted that since the Deputy Senate Leader raised the motion under personal explanation, the senate would not debate it but would rather approved his prayers. Senator Ekweremadu said, ” Ningi’s prayers are simple and straightforward. He is asking us, as representatives of the people, to direct our committees on upstream and downstream, to find out what is currently going on the oil sector and possibly find a way of addressing it. “In that regard, we now ask our committees on Petroleum Resources ( Upstream and Downstream), to find out what is going on and what the government is doing about it and report back on Tuesday last week. That is our wish” The Senate Deputy leader had while moving his motion, said since the Senate still has the mandate of the people until June 1, it had the responsibility to intervene in the unfortunate development. According to him, “We need to know whether fuel scarcity has come to stay. We need to know whether it has become part of our life. We need to plan. “By planning and talking about it we our now sensitising Nigerians to brace up for the impending issue of fuel scarcity whether it is going to be here permanently or temporary. “But we can’t know all these things until we hear from the experts.
