About the effect of COVID-19 on Higher education.

Are admissions of international students going to be cancelled?

NO! Not at all. If you’ve applied to universities already and have heard back with acceptance letters, you do NOT have to worry that your admissions will somehow be cancelled. You need to understand, universities need you just as much as you need them. If they start cancelling admissions of international students, their student numbers will fall drastically and so will their revenue. They don’t want that.

IF by some terrible chance the virus is still wreaking havoc at the time that your classes are supposed to commence, universities will either ask you to move to online classrooms OR they will ask you to defer your admissions to the next semester.

This doesn’t mean you won’t get your student visa - you will. But it means you might have to complete a few courses online until you can join them on campus OR you might have to wait a little longer to commence your course.

The admission cycle and/or funding process will not be affected by the pandemic. At worst, the decisions might be delayed. But as soon as life can go back to normal (and it will), decisions will start being sent out again and universities will resume operation, the same as before.

Stay safe obviously - but don’t let this pandemic change your plans long-term. This is a temporary disruption.

VO: You have an oncampus employment, what will you be doing
Me: I have not been assigned my duties..... A pause, it's a graduate teaching assistantship position

VO: who's your sponsor
Me: My uncle, Mr...

V.O : How many children does he have
Me: 2

VO: Where does he live
Me: Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State

VO: Why will he want to sponsor you
Me: My parents were one of his educational sponsor and he has been part of my success story since my mom died and he promised to sponsor me when I graduated with a strong CGPA

VO:Have you travelled before
ME: No I have not had reasons to

What I noticed during the interview, he emphasised on the huge scholarship as if he was impressed, but I feel he was disappointed with the fact that I said I haven't been assigned my duties, he said again that but you have a campus employment, that was when I mentioned that it is a graduate teaching assistantship position.

Also, how I got my scholarship, I should have mentioned my GRE scores, also although he didn't ask what I would do after my course, when he asked why this course, at the end, I should have mentioned a specific position, I had an answer for that. Please help me figure out what went wrong and how I can improve my responses, I want to reapply immediately.

No document was asked except passport, Sevis fee, and i20

My profile: 3.47/4.00 WES unofficial evaluation
GRE score:314, 161Q, 153V
My tuition was waived(30k)+ 10k stipends, total cost of attendance is roughly 49k, so deficit of less than 9k.

That's awesome. You GRE scores are good too. I'm just trying to understand what type o scholarships are actually present for Indian students. Do you have any idea about that. I just came to know from a scholarship blog that there are 3 types like Fellowship, Teaching A., Research A. Are there any other types of scholarships.

Also visual learning helps in long term retention of the words which will improve vocabulary. There are many apps that solve this problem with lots of pictures and videos in them. These Vocabulary builder apps are the best fit for anyone who strive to improve their english.

Just to add, I found Quizlet to be an excellent resource in learning words and used it alongside the magoosh. I created my own custom list of words that I spooled from various popular GRE word lists (the baron 1000 for instance or Crunchprep's frequent GRE words and even the magoosh app). For each word, I referred to vocabulary.com to learn further. Vocabulary.com would give a backstory of how the word was coined as well as links to various articles where the word was used.
That was so useful. Even there are many apps on playstore like Galvanize Test Prep, magoosh, knudge.me, vocabulary .com and many more. You can check it out here---> Best vocabulary apps

Good afternoon everyone, so I gave GRE today grin grin

I couldn't really learn much vocabularies, learnt less than 500 grin grin, I didn't see any of them in the real exam though, so in my opinion, it's better to have a good strategy for your verbal aside the vocabularies and maybe the vocabularies can just be the upper hand you'd have.

Yes it's better to have a verbal plan. Quant is easier than verbal as the quant tests a very basic knowledge. But most of the time in verbal is consumed for reading and understanding the questions. A lot of practice is required for answering the GRE verbal section.

Hi guys, please which material should one start with For quantitative? In terms of basic understanding of mathematics?. Thank you.
Secondly where can I download GRE math Bible? I can't find it on the link.
It's easy to score 170 in GRE math. If you are good at formulas life becomes easy. I'm not sure about materials to refer, but I can recommend you to follow some forum like greprepclub, urch, grad cafe. Try to be active in them. Follow some GRE math blogs to get some tips to score high. USE VOCAB flashcards and builder apps as well.
Vocabulary.com - USE the GRE word list provided here. And why this is helpful because it let's you understand HOW a word is used apart from ROTE learning vocab. PLUS ETS don't tell you where it excerpts come from but It's from TOP News Papers like NYTimes, Washington Posts etc. and Vocab.com will be using such excerpts. Try reaching a score of 1-3 million.

That's a good advice. Vocab builder apps are very helpful in learning vocabulary with ease and in gamified way. Thanks for the post.

congratulations bro... am a novice in all these GRE stuff. I recently passed out from the nysc scheme sir. l v a few questions though, what is the validity period (in Years) of the GRE exams? or is it yearly like jamb? do I need it to apply for these schools and what portal or site did u use in applying to these schools? thanks

GRE score are valid for a period of five years and it also depends on the time you have taken the test.

For example, if you have taken the GRE exam on or after July 5, 2019, your scores are valid up to July 4, 2024. But if you take the test before July 1, 2019,(say April 30 2019) scores are valid for the following testing year i.e June 30, 2024. Hope this helps you understand clearly. Pls I need some samples of an SOP for applying for study permit as a computer science students undergraduate programmes or pls can anyone can help in writing of an SOP for computer science because I discovered dat it was through my previous SOP dat I got denied.or can anyone send me his or her mail address so dat we can discuss better .

Instead of directly looking into the samples, you need to know how and what content is written in each paragraph with sample presentation. Also it is required to know how not to write a sop. Might this be useful for what you are looking and what I'm trying to explain. Statement of purpose sample explanations

Hi Seyi,

for now, no, if there is more demand for it, I may later..lol
However, if you want a good sample, download this from crunchprep and study it

hope it helps.

That's a great sample for statement of purpose. Reading blogs on Statement of Purpose also helps a lot for writing a winning sop to stand out of millions like us.
A recommended simple template is like..
Para 1: Introduction
para 2: High school & Undergraduate work.
para 3: Continue to middle and key paragraph
para 4: Discuss internship/work experience
para 5 &6: Why XYZ university?
Education / Types of Reading Comprehension Passages In GRE? by Roybhatty: 9:58am On Feb 07, 2019
Need of understanding the passages types
This provides a clear understanding of what you are looking in a passage. Help you understand the organisation of the passage. Can get a clear idea of where to look for a particular information in the passage.
GRE Reading comprehension passages contain a logical flow of the information, a clear purpose and evidence and a conclusion statement. Some important elements that an RC passage are background information, claim, a problem statement, views, cause, an effect, a mechanism, and author's view.
Types of RC passages:
1. Exposition which is a comprehensive description of an idea or a theory.
2. Argumentative - presenting two sides of the argument or a contention with or without a resolution.

So I accepted my fate that I won't join Fall 2018 cohort. In fact, I bought "higher everyday" note book to start my GRE practice again with plans for fall19. I had already downloaded galvanize prep, ready4GRE, Manhattan App, Magoosh vocab. I had some text books and I made up my mind to borrow some books from the embassy.

Exactly 7:20pm today while I was reading an article on aeon.co, I received an email from Tuft University (that rejected me before), I became irate, as I thought it was a promotional message or message about our school is this or that. So, I wanted to archive the message without reading it.

Due to my low GRE score and lack of finance I could only apply to 3 schools - UTK, Tufts University and Uni of Akron (abeg no ask me where this school dey). I applied to RPI (free fee waiver things).

I later discovered that I mistakenly applied to a wrong program at UTK. I was supposed to apply to the ESE doctoral program at Bredesen Center, but, somehow I mistakenly apply to a different department. Hence, I did not even get the privilege to be rejected because my application was not reviewed.

God is faithful! After giving up.

Congratulations!! Good to read this... I too started my preparation with these apps after reading this. Of all those Galvanize test prep GRE app is amazing. Its quite helpful.
Thanks a lot.

Hi gurus in the house. Pls what's the best way to have a grasp of these vocabs? I'm currently using the magoosh vocab app. The issue is that those words haven't stuck yet.
I will be taking the exam in Sept. Thanks

By this time you might have given your exam. Hope you did well. I would like to know your experience.
Also I would like mention a Vocabulary builder app that I'm using and found it really useful. I love learning through this app. Also it is the top rated vocab app in the stores.
Hope this helps others.

My GRE experience:

Since my prep time was limited by the looming deadline, I focused more on quant, especially when I scored a fair 159 in verbal in my diagnostic test. Surprisingly my verbal score was higher than my quant in all my practice tests (Manhattan, Kaplan, powerprep 1 &2, paper test 1), ranging from 157- 159 while my quant was 154 - 156...
Prep Apps:
I downloaded "Ready4gre" (very good app for quick practice, it shows your expected scores based on performance and has leaderboards showing how you rank compared to other candidates. I remember RexCheeng also pointed it out)
Magoosh vocab app (used it sparingly, felt my verbal was good enough for a 155)

It's generally said that verbal is tougher than quant and even I felt that too. I started preparing like hell for Verbal. Even I'm using a high rated Vocabulary builder app and I'm enjoying learning from it. I observed the changes in my score as I took it serious in my preparation.

That's really true. We shouldn't rely only on the America. There are many countries like Cananda, Australia... Even I dreamed to get my masters from American university. But missed it as my GRE score is not up to the mark.

There's a test prep I downloaded then, it's quite difficult sha oh. The name is galvanize, it has both Verbal and Quant. Manhattan also has an android app prep, but to subscribe to the full package is 7k. In all though most android apps are just for mastering GRE vocabs, apps like Magoosh.

Hey even I used this Galvanize test prep android app. I really love it. The questions in the app resembles the actual GRE exam. I recently took profile evaluation from these guys and this is quite helpful.

Please don't get confused by using all kinds of material. Different guys follow different approach to the solutions. Be clear while picking up the material. And yes videos really works well also you need to practice. At the end only your practice matters. And the most important thing is stop worrying. This nowhere helps you in getting good score. Keep calm and practice well. I personally prefer Galvanize Test Prep where I solved many GRE practice tests and got clarified through video lectures. At the end I would like to say it again...Stop Worrying and keep practicing.
