Abuja - Senator Chris Ngige on Thursday in Abuja denied reports that issues of power sharing was threatening the stability of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East. He said that it was untrue that the Igbos were divided over the position of the Secretary to the General of the Federation (SGF). Ngige made this known while interacting with newsmen at the sidelines of the visit of a delegation of Ohaneze Ndigbo to the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari. "We cannot say for now that our party has zoned the position of the SGF to the South-East because we have a standing committee that is still working on distribution of party offices. "The import of what is happening, like you said, is that in the executive branch now the South-East is not represented at all and in the legislature, we will not be represented because we have no senator from the South-East of Nigeria. "We have two House of Representatives members who are not ranking and might not get any meaningful position in the end. "It is in that wise that the people you saw here last week and today again have been consistently asking for position of SGF to come to the South-East," he said. Also read: APC senators may dump zoning of Senate presidency Reiterating that there was no rancour in their camp, Ngige said, "you can see we are a disciplined people in the South-East, forget about what people are saying in the newspapers." "We have a caucus and that caucus has met on that position; we are only waiting for the party to officially tell us this is your position and we will submit the name. "We have come to a decision but when we get to the bridge we will cross it; let the party say South-East this is your position then we will not waste even one hour in submitting a name," he said. Also speaking to newsmen, Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Raph Obioha, said there was a feeling among the Igbos of political imbalance in the polity. "There is a creation and a feeling of an imbalance in the political equation; there must be a tripod in the political equation of Nigeria but that tripod seems to be missing one leg. "If it is not truly harnessed well, it cannot stand but Buhari gave the assurance that he would treat the entire nation as his constituency for all and we believed him," he said. http://www.news24.com.ng/Elections/News/Ngige-denies-rancour-in-APC-over-South-East-interest-20150508 |

Members of Niger Delta ISAC Israel Trained Agricultural Group of Nigeria (NDITAGON) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to direct the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to fulfill its promise to empower them financially after their one-year training in Israel or be ready to face their wrath. President of the group, Azubuike Chiemeka Emmanuel, who issued the threat on behalf of 98 members of NDITAGON in Abuja, regretted that they had been sleeping on the streets of Abuja for more than two weeks now due to the failure of the Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Darius Ishaku to attend to them. The group warned that since their appeals to President Goodluck Jonathan, the National Assembly and other well-meaning Nigerians had failed to produce any result, it would resort to both legal and non-legal actions, including returning to the creeks to seek redress. The ex-militants said the ministry gave them $300 each for a training in advanced agriculture in Israel on May 24, 2013 and promised to financially empower them after their programme. They, however, said since their return, several attempts they made to get the ministry to fulfill its promise failed to yield any result. “On the eve of our departure to Israel, the Honourable Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Abuja, Arch. Darius Ishaku openly told us that on arrival from Israel, we would be empowered for immediate establishment of our farm(s) while the Israel partners would arrive as well to provide more technical assistance in our different farms. “This was supported by the Permanent Secretary, Directors, and even the staff that were present, as they said we should count urns elves lucky that we are all made are we return from Israel. It is empowerment for life and a millions naira projects for each of us,” he explained. Speaking further, he said: “On return to Nigeria in June 21, 2014, nobody from the ministry came to receive us at the airport. We lost our cloths, olive oil, money and luggage by Ethiopia airline. The ministry however paid for our accommodations for three days and received us at the ministry. “However, behind closed doors, the Minister told us that federal government has not released funds to the ministry to pay us. Since then, we have been running up and down appealing to everyone to intervene on our matter without getting any result. “We have exercised enough patience including sleeping on the road in Abuja and we cannot no longer continue like this. We don’t want them to push us to the wall again because we can still return to the cricks. Since our demonstration has not yielded any concrete result, we want to give them seven days ultimatum to attend to us or be ready for legal action. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=118365

Promises fairness to every section as zone demands SGF, House of Reps presiding officer From Iheanacho Nwosu,Abuja The President-elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday assured that he will not discriminate against the South-East or any other section of the country, saying Nigeria is his constituency. He also promised to look into the demands of the South-East caucus of the All Progressives Congress(APC) handed to him recently . Gen Buhari spoke when he met with the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Caretaker Committee led by its Chairman, Chief Ralph Obioha. Other members of the delegation include former Anambra State governor, Sen. Chris Ngige, former Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries, Eze Festus Odimegwu, Chief Onwuka Ukwa, Osita Okechukwu and Anike Nwoga . Dismissing fears that his incoming administration may work against sections of the country that didn’t vote for him in the last polls, the President-elect said he will fulfil the promise he made during the campaigns to treat every Nigerian equally. He commended some South-East leaders who, he said, stood for the truth and ensured that residents of the area were fed with the truth. In his address, Obioha thanked Gen. Buhari for his promise to run a competent and corruption-free government. He described as false claims that South-East did not vote for Buhari. According to him, if the Card Reader was allowed to work in the zone, Nigerians would have known that the zone was for APC . The Ohanaeze caretaker committee boss singled out Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Sen Ngige and Governor Rochas Okorocha for praise, describing the trio as wise men. Apart from the three, Obioha listed prominent Igbo leaders like former Abia State governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, Odimegwu as those who worked for the APC candidate. He said: “We are only a representative delegation and on behalf of the whole house, we wish to mention the outstanding, extra efforts and contributions of H.E Orji Uzor Kalu, Sen Jen Nnamani, Chief Emeka Okwosa, Eze Festus Odimegwu, Chief Enechi Onyia, Sen Offia Nwali and Chief Onwuka Ukwa . “The three wise men from the South-East, Governor Rochas Okorocha, Ogbonnaya Onu and Chris Ngige are our illustrious sons. “Your Excellency, as the head of the APC leadership, you are aware that the South-East was a target by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rigging machine which produced an election result that denied the zone of even a single senator and only three non-ranking members of the House. Ndigbo request that you adopt the principle of necessity to give the zone the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)which is your prerogative and in addition, a position of one presiding officer in the House of Representatives “. Also speaking, Eze Odimegwu thanked Gen Buhari for nominating him into the Transition Committee even when he had not met him before. He said it was a sign that the incoming government will pay attention to merit than other considerations. Meanwhile, Ngige has dismissed insinuation that the South-East APC caucus was fighting over the SGF slot that is likely to be zoned to the region. He said the zone is working together, disclosing that the caucus’ decision on that will be made known soon. He said: “We have a caucus, we have a position, when we get to the bridge, we cross it.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=118357

ANYONE who smokes in public in Ekiti State now risks going to jail for three months. This followed the inauguration of the Smoke-Free Law Enforcement Committee. The Committee, chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Dr. Bolanle Fakunle, was inaugurated yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. The Anti-Smoking Enforcement Panel was to give legal backing to the Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Law passed by the House of Assembly on September 26, 2012. It was signed by former Governor Kayode Fayemi on December 31 of the same year. Security agencies, such as the police, civil defence corps, environmental health officers, have been empowered by law to arrest culprits and ensure their prosecution. The advocacy was driven by a non-governmental organisation, the New Initiative for Social Development. Delivering his address, the Executive Director of NISD, Abiodun Oyeleye, said the tobacco epidemic has adverse impact on public health of developing countries, including Nigeria. Oyeleye said awareness has been created among various stakeholders, such as religious and political leaders, hoteliers, drivers’ unions, youths, women, senior government officials, ministries, departments and agencies. Punishment for contravention of the law is found in Section 6. Any person who contravenes any of the provision of the law other than Section 3 shall be liable on conviction to a fine of N10,000 or to an imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months or both. A fine of N25,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both awaits any offender who contravenes any of the provision of Section 3 of the law. The law further prescribes a punishment of N250,000 for the violation of sub-section (1) or (2) stated above, if it be a corporate offender. Dr. Fakunle said the move was not targeted at smokers but to prevent smoking in public places to safeguard public health and protect non-smokers from inhaling cigarette fumes. Members of the Committee are Mr. Lawrence Ojo, Permanent Secretary/Solicitor General, Ministry of Justice; Mr. P.A. Bankole of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. M.T.Olowolafe, president of the Environmental Task Force in all the 16 Local Government Areas and Mrs. O.O. Buhari to Nigerians: I won’t betray you President elect, Gen. Muhammdu Buhari, on Wednesday assured Nigerians that his government will not betray them, saying 2015 will go down in the political history of Nigeria as a glorious year. Buhari, who spoke when he received a delegation from Taraba State led by the All Progressive Congress governorship candidate, Senator Aisha Alhassan, said Nigerian people sacrificed a lot to achieve the success currently being celebrated across the country. While acknowledging the fact that some people lost in the process, the President -elect said, “We will never betray the people because they have risked everything. Some even lost their lives in this course to make sure that APC succeeded and that we have a leadership in place that they trust. That is what multi party democracy is all about.” He also assured that he will form a broad based government saying, “I assure you that the government of the APC, when eventually put in place will be a competent Nigerian government.” He continued: “I will tell you what made me a multi- party democrat. In 1991, after coming out of detention, I was sitting at home and the Soviet Union collapsed. “They were the world power fighting the western world. In technology, they were the first to go to space. They had more sophisticated weapons, but something happened. There was confusion and everybody went their way. “Today, there are 18 countries in the former Soviet Union. That was when I believed that multi- party democratic system is a superior form of governance and that is why I joined democracy. “We have made a big stride this year and I assure you God willing, if we survive the next four years, Nigerians will be in a position to confidently raise their head up and elect their own representatives and leaders. “They will choose those they want as their representatives from local government, states and to the centre. I will fight for free, fair d credible election because that is why I remained politics. I thank you very much for the sacrifices you have made to make sure we succeeded.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/buhari-to-nigerians-i-wont-betray-you-buhari/ |

*Says Nigerians not ready to accept any excuse for failure *FEC approves draft National Policy on Renewable Energy By Ben Agande ABUJA — The Presidency, Wednesday, chided the All Progressives Congress, APC, over its claim that President Jonathan is running the economy aground before handing over, saying “the allegation is immature, reckless and out of tune with the President’s desire and patriotic commitment to a peaceful transfer of power.” Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Prof. Rufai Alkali, who reacted to APC’s allegation, yesterday, urged the party to talk less and plan more as the nation moves towards May 29 inauguration date. Alkali reminded APC that “governance is a serious business,” adding that “with the sudden and unexpected concession of victory to them, it appears that the APC is beginning to face the full reality of managing the great challenges of a complex nation. “Their recent, frequent and unnecessary attacks on the President clearly shows that they are losing their nerves and are beginning to lay foundation to justify their failures in the near future and we want to remind them that Nigerians are not ready to accept any excuses for their failure. They promised to bring change, so they must bring positive change to the well-being of Nigerians and urgently too. Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali “Nigerians will recall that shortly after the results of the Presidential elections were announced, President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated a high powered transition committee to plan and organise a hitch-free transition programme for the inauguration of the incoming administration. Surprisingly, it took the APC more than three weeks to wake up to its responsibility to constitute its own transition committee. How then can they turn round to accuse the government of frustrating the transition programme? “Since the setting up of the committee, the President and the entire machinery of the Federal Government have been put on the transition mood and all government officers have been giving maximum cooperation to the incoming transition committee. “By the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Jonathan remains in office up to May 29, 2015 when he formally hands over to the incoming President. The machinery of government cannot be put on hold or frozen because the country is in transition” FEC approves draft National Policy on Renewable Energy Meanwhile, the Federal Executive Council, FEC, yesterday approved a draft National Policy on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for the country even as the council offered special prayers to mark the 5th anniversay of President Goodluck Jonathan in office. Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, Minister of Information, Mrs Patricia Akwashiki and Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said the country was blessed with vast hydro, solar, wind and other sources of energy, hence the need for a policy for renewable energy. According to Nebo, the policy would promote increased access to electricity by Nigerians and improve energy mix as well as energy security. He said the policy would also create jobs for the nation’s teeming youths. He said: “The overall policy objective is to increase access using renewable energy mix, create new business opportunities and new jobs, support global efforts towards green economies and addressing climate change problems. “I addition, the policy will also promote and encourage efficient use of energy and energy conservation in Nigeria. “After due consideration, council approved the Draft National Policy on Renewable Energy and Efficiency for Nigeria.” Special prayers to mark Jonathan’s 5th year in office Meanwhile, the special prayers to mark the 5th anniversary of President Goodluck in office, took most members of the council by surprise as most of them, who did not remember the date, saw the Minister of Labour, Chinedu Nebo, an ordained minister in the Anglican Communion and Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda, offering Christian and Muslim prayers respectively. President Jonathan was sworn-in on May 6, 2010 by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, following the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua. Jonathan, who came into the council chambers, announced the news of his swearing-in five years ago. After the National Anthem and National Pledge, Jonathan threw a poser at the ministers that one of them was marking his birthday. He said instead of the usual national prayer, two members of council, a Christian and a Muslim, should offer prayers for the council member before the meeting would continue with the day’s business. The ministers looked round at each other in surprise, wondering who the celebrant was without any clue. Jonathan then reminded them that May 6, 2015 marks his 5th year as substantive President. All cabinet members clapped joyfully before Nebo, said the Christian prayer while Yuguda said the Muslim prayer. After the National Pledge, Jonathan said: “Today, we will not say the national prayer. Somebody is celebrating birthday so we will offer special prayers for him. Two very Godly people will pray, Nebo and Yuguda. Do you know the person?” When they could not answer, he said: “On May 6, exactly five years today, I was sworn-in as substantive President. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/talk-less-plan-more-presidency-tells-apc/ |
