BY GEOFFREY ANYANWU, AWKA ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2014 · NATIONAL • Okorie, Ohaneze disagree over adoption A war of words broke out at the weekend in Awka, Anambra State, during the Igbo Lecture Series organized by Ohaneze Ndigbo to mark the 2014 Igbo Day celebration. The National Chairman of United Peoples Party (UPP), Chief Chekwas Okorie and the acting President of the Ijaw National Congress, Charles Ambaiowei, disagreed over Igbo’s support for President Goodluck Jonathan’s presumed second term ambition. At the lecture which held at the Women Development Centre, Awka, Chief Okorie had in his address which received a loud ovation from the audience, resented the unsolicited endorsement of Jonathan’s re-election bid by the Igbo, stating that endorsing the President without any negotiation or concrete promise to the people of the South-East amounts to sycophancy. Okorie wondered when and why Ndigbo suddenly lost their bite, to the extent of following members of other ethnic nationalities sheepishly without asking questions or seeking to know what was in a game for them. He said: “When I look around me, I see 1,000 Igbo men who are more qualified than Jonathan, when I look again, I see more than 2,000 Igbo men that are more qualified than Buhari and Atiku put together. So, what are they telling us? “My problem is not just that the Igbo have no good leaders to negotiate for them, my main problem is that they do not even have the teeth to bite any longer. The UPP boss, however, distanced himself from any endorsement or adoption that President Jonathan might have received from some Igbo leaders, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo, stressing that his party would field an Igbo presidential candidate next year. He said, “I have nothing against Jonathan, but I believe that we should negotiate before we adopt, and not adopt before we negotiate. I don’t know when Igbo grew this cold.” But reacting to Okorie’s speech, Ambaiowei, who is a former commissioner in Bayelsa State under Jonathan as governor, said the UPP’s boss claims were very far from the truth. He said there was an existing partnership between the Igbo and the Ijaw nation, urging Okorie and his likes to rather think of how to utilize the said relationship to consolidate their stay around the corridors of power, with the hope of taking over from Jonathan after 2019. He said, “I was on my way coming here (Awka) when I got a news alert on my phone that ‘Chekwas Okorie blasts Jonathan,’ and later I was told that Chekwas will be here and I said it will be good for me to see him. “What I am saying is that with the partnership we already have between the Ijaw and the Igbo, we are asking our brothers here to support Goodluck Jonathan to complete his second term, and after then, we will now ensure that Jonathan hands over to the Igbo.” However, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Gary Igariwey, reiterated the Ohaneze stand on the matter, stating that though it was the turn of the Igbo to produce the president, they would shelve their aspiration if Jonathan declares interest. He said he would not join issues with Okorie as he (Okorie) is a respected Igbo son, and had spoken as a politician he is. Igariwey said there was the need to call on Igbo at home and in the Diaspora to join in the collective struggle to build Igboland and make it the pride of the Igbo. Speaking to newsmen on the Igbo Day celebration today, the President-General of World Igbo Congress (WIC), Chief Nwachukwu Anakwenze, said it would focus on calling on Igbo in the Diaspora to return. home and help build up the Igbo nation http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=83844 |
Activists, others plan anti-Jonathan rally Barring any hitches, organizers of ≠BringBackOurGirls and some key opposition leaders will stage a protest against President Goodluck Jonathan on October 1, the Independence Day, over the continued abduction of over 200 Chibok schoolgirls by Boko Haram. The grand protest, which would hold in Abuja, will be attended by some human rights groups to mark 170 days since the abduction of the female students. A member of the ≠BringBackOurGirls group, who opted for anonymity, said the planned protest is still under wraps. He said the choice of October 1 is deliberate as, according to him, it is a day the President and other government officials will mark the Independence Day. He said the group and some international rights organization were not happy over government’s handling of the release of the girls. He claimed that the President was more interested in his second term than mobilizing forces for their rescue. The aim of the protest, the ≠BringBackOurGirls officials disclosed, is to compel the Presidency to step up efforts towards the release of the girls, stressing that the Independence Day protest is one of the many activities being planned against President Jonathan’s re-election bid. The move by the group followed fresh plot by lawyers to stop the President from seeking re-election in 2015. But reacting to the planned protest, the office of Dr Doyin Okupe, Senior Special Adviser on Public Affairs, said it was aware of the plans and “will follow through.” Giving details on preparations for the protest, the group’s official said some opposition governors, senators and House of Representatives members have been helping to firm up arrangements for the protest. For instance, he said at a meeting held by members of the group on September 24, two senators, two House of Representatives members attended. The perley which took place in Abuja was also attended by an international human rights Non- Governmental Organization (NGO). He said: “It is to mark 170 days of the abduction and to consolidate on the hostile environment that would prevent him (President Jonathan) from contesting,” the meeting resolved . He noted that a team also visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Borno State camped at Inkuma and Kabaru in Nasarawa State and donated some materials. He said the team resolved to seek “possible recruitment of a governor from the South-South, a female Rep, a governorship aspirant in one of the states in the Northeast and six other “human rights activists. “The overall objective of this drive is to ensure that President Jonathan leaves office before the scheduled elections in 2015 or ensure he is not re- elected,” it said. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=83814

Bloodbath was averted at Atani, Ogbaru council area of Anambra state as the wife of the state Governor, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano announced that the party has given the Speaker of the State House of Assembly Mrs. Chinwe Nwebili, its nod to contest for the House of Representatives election in 2015. Daily Sun gathered that no sooner than the First Lady announced the automatic ticket for Mrs. Nwebili than supporters of the current representative of Ogbaru federal constituency, Afam Ogene clashed with supporters of the Speaker, resulting in a free for all fight before law enforcement agents battled to put the situation under control. Mrs. Obiano made the declaration during her maiden visit to the area as part of her familiarization tour to the 21 local government areas of state, which threw the entire members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA into confusion with some aggrieved members and supporters of Afam Ogene and Chinwe Nwebili pointing at each other. Speaker Nwaebili, who practically hijacked the event with her supporters, has been variously reported as eyeing the National Assembly seat currently occupied by Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Deputy Chairman, Media and Public Affairs, in the House of Representatives. The governor’s wife pronouncement at the event, which obviously embarrassed the party leaders at the event threw the crowd into a rowdy shouts of disapproval and protestation, which almost degenerated to a free – for – all between supporters of Hon. Ogene, who were also there to receive the first lady and those of Speaker Nwaebili. ENDS http://sunnewsonline.com/new/?p=83247
