The International Police Organisation, INTERPOL said on Tuesday that 140 individuals had been nabbed globally for using fake and stolen credit cards to purchase airplane tickets. It said that an international law enforcement operation targeting the purchase of airplane tickets using stolen or fake payment card details had resulted in the detention of the 140 individuals. The INTERPOL said in a statement that a two-day Airport Action Days operation was jointly coordinated by INTERPOL, Europol and Ameripol, with support from law enforcement authorities in Canada and the U.S. INTERPOL said it coordinated the operational activities across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions from its command post located at the INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI) in Singapore. ``Staffed by officers from the Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes and Global Outreach and Regional Support units, as well as the Command and Coordination Centre. ``Other command posts were set up by Europol in the Netherlands, Ameripol in Colombia and by Canadian and American law enforcement authorities, and support was also offered by Frontex and Eurojust. ``During the operation, 252 suspicious transactions were reported worldwide, which led to 140 individuals being detained, denied boarding and questioned by police,’’ it said. It said that the individuals, who were detained during the operation, were also found to be involved in other forms of crimes, including human trafficking, drug trafficking, cybercrime and terrorism. “This type of fraud not only targets innocent consumers by stealing their payment card details, it also poses significant risks to global security by allowing criminals and terrorists to travel under the radar. “Only through coordinated interventions such as the Airport Action Days can track down the organised criminal networks behind this large- scale fraud. ``Also detaining the criminals involved before they have the chance to commit other crimes is important,” the INTERPOL Secretary General, Jürgen Stock said. INTERPOL said that representatives from airlines, online travel agencies and payment card companies worked together with law enforcement to identify suspicious airline ticket purchases and send the information to law enforcement officers deployed at the participating airports. Payment card issuers, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Perseus, the global travel industry’s fraud review structure, supported the operation by providing additional information to confirm suspicious transactions. “With thousands of airline bookings made online daily, it is by such coordinated, targeted and intensive checks being carried out simultaneously that the potential fraudulent use of credit cards can be detected. ``That is the only way the fraudsters can be arrested,’’ Rob Wainwright, Director of Europol, said. In addition to coordinating the information exchange and investigations across Asia and the Middle East, INTERPOL conducted checks against its criminal databases, including its nominal and Stolen and Lost Travel Documents (SLTD) databases. James Anderson, Head of INTERPOL’s Anti- Corruption and Financial Crimes unit highlighted the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and private industry partners in detecting fraudulent airline ticket purchases. The statement said that some 74 airlines and 43 countries were involved in this year’s action, which took place at more than 130 airports across the world. INTERPOL coordinated the operational activity of 16 airlines and police in nine countries located at 12 airports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. It said that the operation was timed to coincide with the Euro 2016 football tournament. It said that was one of the reasons why particular attention was paid to passengers travelling to the host country, France, with checks conducted at local airports and in departure countries. Achuwa1:What do you have against Mrs Buhari?? |
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said that the current economic downturn in Nigeria would surely make the people act right, assuring that the President Muhammadu Buhari's presidency would ensure that the Nigerian people benefit from the resources of the nation. Osinbajo spoke during a courtesy call on him by the Australian Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary, African Branch, Mr. Mathew Neuhaus who was accompanied by the country's High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr. Paul Lehmann. "it is a difficult time, but we think it is an excellent opportunity to do right by the people so that our people are able to get the benefit of the nation's resources," he said. He however noted that the presidency was making appreciable effects in the areas of security, governance, anti-corruption and the economy. According to him, there had been a liberalization of the oil and gas' downstream sector and that the flexible foreign exchange policy recently put in place would encourage foreign investment adding that "we are looking forward to the benefits of the new foreign exchange policy." Commending the Australian government for its "excellent support," in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast, the Vice President observed that while significant progress had been recorded by the military in downgrading Boko Haram, the challenge now was overcoming the ideology that motivated terrorist activities. According to him, "we have already dealt with Boko Haram militarily. We now have to deal with the ideology (of terror) and this is something that the entire world has to also deal with. The terrorists basically reject any engagement, simply preaching hate and murder. It is a new kind of threat, the ideology and motivation is what we-the global community- have to find a way to deal with." A statement by his media Aide, Mr. Laolu Akande stated that while speaking earlier, Mr. Neuhaus, who had served as his country's High Commissioner in Nigeria congratulated the Buhari administration observing that the presidency is "off to a good start." He also praised the steps so far taken by the administration, some of which he said have not been "easy," adding that Australia looked forward to doing more with the government and working "very closely with Nigeria", in mining and investment. www.newsdoggen.org/2016/06/osibanjo-current-hard-times-will-make.html cc:Lalasticlala seun

ABUJA-The Presidency has said that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State acted so infantile by linking President Buhari's wife, Aisha to US Congressman William Jefferson's bribery scandal for which the American lawmaker was convicted in 2009. The Presidency while dismissing the issue also described it as laughable and desperate act to attract media attention. Reacting to Fayose's allegations in a press statement, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said "ordinarily the presidency would have ignored Fayose because he is a man "childishly obsessed with the desire to grab the headlines and insulting people at will because of his incurably boorish instincts." Malam Garba explained however that the" presidency chose to respond on this occasion for the sake of innocent Nigerians who might be misled by Fayose's shameless and blatant distortion of facts." He said ignoring Fayose carried the "risk of giving traction and credibility to outright and brazen falsehoods inconsistent with the status of anybody that called himself a Governor or leader." According to Shehu, Aisha had "no direct, indirect or the remotest connection with William Jefferson's corruption scandal in the United States." He challenged Fayose to "tell Nigerians if the so- called Aisha whose pictures he proudly, but ignorantly shared, was the same Aisha married to President Muhammadu Buhari, or if the Aisha of his idle imagination had any relationship by blood or any relationship in whatever form, with President Buhari's wife." Shehu also challenged Fayose to "produce evidence from the records of investigation and subsequent trial of Jefferson to prove that Buhari's wife Aisha was in anyway linked to that scandal." He explained that "common names alone are not enough to automatically link innocent people to crimes or scandals, especially in an era of identity thieves." He further challenged Fayose to "show proof when and where Aisha Buhari was invited for interrogation in connection with Congressman William Jefferson's bribery scandal, let alone indicted for a crime locally or abroad." According to the Presidential Media Aide, "free speech does not entitle Governor Fayose to falsely accuse innocent people of crimes they knew nothing about." He warned Fayose that Aisha Buhari was "entitled to protect her reputation from being recklessly maligned, adding that political opposition is not a license to attack people's reputation brazenly without legal consequences." www.newsdoggen.org/2016/06/fayose-is-acting-like-child-presidency.html?m=1 cc:Lalasticlala
