3. Moses Ayodele Olurunfemi, aged 51: sentenced to death in 2012 for culpable homicide and had spent 13 years on death row in Katsina. President Tinubu commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment, citing the individual's good conduct and remorse.

4. Abubakar Usman, aged 59: Sentenced to Death in 2014 and had spent 14 years on death row in Katsina. His sentence was commuted to life because of his remorse and good conduct.

GOVERNOR SANWO-OLU SET TO UNVEIL 420 NEW HOME UNITS

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu will unveil a newly completed 420 home units at Ajara Badagry on Wednesday, 8th October, 2025.

The commissioning of the new Lagos State Housing Estate Ajara Phase 1 at Badagry, will further increase the stock of model housing units and cater for accommodation needs of over 2000 individuals.

The State Commissioner for Housing, Hon Moruf Akinderu-Fatai disclosed this during a media chat with reporters in his office on Tuesday, stating that the estate consists of 420 home apartments of 1 bedroom, 2 bedrooms and 3 bedrooms respectively.

Hon Akinderu-Fatai revealed that the aim is to provide affordable and quality housing inline with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's campaign promise to complete all ongoing housing projects in the State.

He expressed excitement about the project's completion, citing its potential impact on the community's economy.

Hon. Akinderu-Fatai thanked prospective subscribers for their patience and trust in the administration. He also advised interested subscribers who have intention to apply to visit the Estate Department of the Ministry at Block 3, the Secretariat, Alausa and refrain from dealing with swindlers as the Ministry does not engage agents in the sale of any of its housing units.

Army officer dies after being set ablaze by wife in Akwa Ibom

A Nigerian Army officer, Lt. Samson Haruna, has died after sustaining severe burns when his wife allegedly set him ablaze during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

Zagazola Makama learnt that the tragic incident occurred on Sept. 22, 2025.

The source said the officer, who was also a medical doctor attached to the 6 Battalion Regimental Medical Officer (RMO), had a heated argument with his wife, Mrs. Samson Haruna, which resulted in her dousing him with petrol (PMS) and setting him on fire.

“The officer sustained severe burns and was immediately stabilised at the Military Reference Section (MRS) in the barracks before being evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further management,” the source said.

The officer, however, succumbed to his injuries despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life.

It was further gathered that the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody while an investigation into the incident is ongoing. http://zagazola.org reports

I had to watch this video to make sure that Mr. Bismarck Rewane was not misquoted. Alas, he wasn't. I had imagined that Mr. Rewane was an intellectual powerhouse, but this interview makes me question my previously held assertion.

It is certainly not true that "Between 1999 and today, no new capital project, no new highways or bridges have been constructed."

In fact, I am being kind. It is inaccurate. Since 1999, the Federal Government and the Lagos State government have built many such projects, and I will mention some of them.

The Superfast 187-kilometre Abuja-Kaduna Railway was one of the most expensive capital projects ever built in Nigeria at the time, at approximately $1.2 billion. Construction began in February 2011 and was completed and commissioned on July 26, 2016.

Work on the Loko-Oweto Bridge began in November 2011 and was completed in April 2023. It cost approximately $257 million, or about ₦51 billion at the time.

The Olorunsogo Power Plant was conceived in 2002. Construction began in 2005 and was finished in 2007 at a cost of $650 million.

The Ten Lane Abuja Airport Road, now known as the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua Expressway, was kicked off in 2009 and completed in 2014. It cost $1.7 billion.

The Moshood Abiola National Stadium was a project that the Federal Government started in September 2000 and was finished by April 2003 for $360 million.

The Lagos State Government and its private sector began building the Lekki Deep Sea Port in June 2020, and it was completed by April 2023.

Work on the New Terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport began in 2014 and was finished in December 2018, costing $500 million.

Construction on the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project began in 2017 and was completed in 2025 for $470 million.

Nigeria began constructing the Omotosho Power Plant in March 2005. It was completed in 2007, although a subsequent phase 2 was completed in 2012. It cost $114.89 million.

The Lagos State Government and its partners, the Lekki Concession Company, commenced constructing the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in May 2009 and finished by May 29, 2013.

I have listed ten random major infrastructural projects built between 1999 and today. There are literally hundreds more.

I know we still have a long way to go and have not fulfilled our potential. However, as we mark our 65th Independence anniversary, it is sad that an economist of note, such as Mr. Rewane, would say something like this, which is not only inaccurate but has the potential to dampen Nigerians' patriotism and undermine democracy in Nigeria.
