A Nigerian, Yemi Mobolade, has been elected the mayor of Colorado Springs, a municipality in Colorado in the United States.

With his victory at the polls, Mobolade becomes the first Black man elected to lead the city in political upheaval, the Colorado Sun reports.

The new mayor, a Nigerian immigrant and businessman, won the seat with no political experience.

Mobolade becomes the mayor after he defeated Wayne Williams on Tuesday night in the city’s runoff contest.

Mobolade’s victory represents a political earthquake in Colorado Springs, long known as a conservative stronghold. Wayne Williams is a Republican while Mobolade is unaffiliated, the report added.

Mobolade had received 57% of the vote to Williams’ 43% as of 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Williams conceded at about 7:30 p.m. When the second batch of results was released shortly before 9 p.m., the percentages hadn’t shifted.

Mobolade will succeed Mayor John Suthers, a former federal prosecutor and Colorado attorney general who was term-limited, to become the city’s 42nd mayor

The Ebonyi State Police Command, on Friday, announced the arrest of four persons over the murder of a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Peter Nweke.

Nweke was tortured to death by hoodlums suspected to be loyalists of a rival party on March 18, 2023, the day of the Governorship and House of Assembly Elections in the state.

The PDP ward chairman was killed at Umuezeokaoha community, in the Ezza North Local Government Area of the state while working as his party’s agent in the area.

The state police command, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said the suspects confessed to the crime.

Former United States President Donald Trump spent nearly seven hours answering questions in a New York lawsuit that accuses him and three of his children of fraud, according to his lawyer.

Trump’s deposition on Thursday came a week after the former president’s historic indictment in an unrelated criminal case regarding hush payments to adult actress Stormy Daniels.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has accused the former president, Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump of lying to tax authorities, lenders and insurers for years as part of an “incredible” fraud at the Trump Organization.

Trump arrived at James’s office before 10:00am (14:00 GMT) for the deposition, which was conducted in private, and returned to Trump Tower, his New York residence and headquarters of the Trump Organization, a little after 6:30pm (10:30 GMT).

Trump previously attended James’s office in August, during which he refused to answer most questions and invoked his right to silence several hundred times.

Christopher Kise, a lawyer for Trump’s businesses, said the former president spent nearly seven hours answering questions about his “extraordinary business success” and that “everyone will scoff at the notion any fraud took place” once the facts are out in the open.

The Labour Party candidate in the Lagos State governorship election, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has lost his polling unit to the incumbent, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress.

Rhodes-Vivour polled 18 votes while Sanwo-Olu won with 29 votes.

Another contestant in the election, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Olajide Adeniran, popularly known as Jandor, polled two votes.
