Politics › Embattled Aviation Minister Absent At FEC Meeting by saasala(op): 12:46pm On Oct 23, 2013
Embattled Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, was on Wednesday absent at the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Oduah is currently in the eye of the storm over the purchase of two bulletproof cars for her by the Nigerians Civil Aviation Authority. The vehicles are valued at a whopping $1.6m (about N255m).
Many stakeholders had been calling for her sacking or resignation while the Presidency had so far kept mum on the matter.
State House correspondents who had resolved to take up the matter with the minister before or after the FEC meeting were disappointed as she failed to show up at the time the meeting started a few minutes after 10am

Phones › Blackberry Resumes BBM Rollout For Iphone, Android Users by saasala(op): 12:17pm On Oct 23, 2013
Following the delay caused by a software leak, BlackBerry has officially resumed the release of its BlackBerry Messenger app for Android and iPhones.
Samsung customers in Nigeria and other sub-Sahara African countries can now download the BBM app from the Samsung Apps Store, while iPhone and other Android-based smartphone users will be able to download the app in three days’ time, a release from BlackBerry on Tuesday indicated.
The deployment was halted last month when an unauthorised copy of the app was leaked for Android smartphones and caused problems with the BlackBerry Messenger platform.
When that leaked, the company said around a million people downloaded it for their Android smartphones. What they have now revealed is that more than one million people also found creative ways to “side load” BBM onto their iPhone.
In order to avoid the problems and manage server loads, the company is phasing the rollout of the BBM app for other devices.
The six million people who registered to be told about the launch will be able to use the app immediately. Other users will have to download the app and register, and then will be sent a message when their account has been activated.
The app is now available on Google Play and iTunes.
The BBM has more than 60 million active customers monthly on BlackBerry alone, and the overwhelming majority use it an average of 90 minutes per day.
BBM customers collectively send and receive more than 10 billion messages each day, nearly twice as many messages per user per day compared to other mobile messaging apps. Messages on BBM are typically read within seconds, reflecting how truly engaged the BBM customers are.
The Executive Vice-President for BBM at BlackBerry, Mr. Andrew Bocking, said, “BBM is a very engaging messaging service that is simple to use, easy to personalise and has an immediacy that is necessary for mobile communications.
“With more than a billion Android, iOS and BlackBerry smartphones in the market, and no dominant mobile messaging platform, this is absolutely the right time to bring BBM to Android and iPhone customers.”
According to BlackBerry, the BBM will continue to evolve quickly, as later this year, BBM channels will provide a forum for active, real conversations between people, brands, celebrities, artists, service providers, communities and more.
By creating a channel, the firm said individuals and brands could engage their friends and communities in conversations sparked off by their thoughts, ideas and passions.
“Subscribing to a channel will let you join conversations with people who share your interests. In addition, BBM video calling and BBM voice calling are planned for availability for Android and iPhone in a future version,” it added.

Sports › We Almost Won The Eaglets – Sweden Coach by saasala(op): 11:40am On Oct 23, 2013
Coach Roland Larsson has rued his side’s 3-3 draw with the Golden Eaglets, whom he said should have been beaten in yesterday’s Group F match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup here.
Speaking at the conference centre, Larsson said that his superior tactical play almost paid off against their more illustrious west African foes, who have won the competition three times.
Sounding disappointed with the result, which puts them on four points heading into their final group match with Mexico on Friday, Larsson said that his players deserved all the credit for putting up a strong
showing against Nigeria, who he described as one of the superpowers of world junior football.
“It sounds so funny that one can feel disappointed when you play a good draw against Nigeria. We were so close to victory but I am very proud of my boys and they deserve all the credit because they followed
all the plan. I am impressed with the individual skills, speed of the Nigerians but we also deserve some points for this massive show.
“We had studied the way Nigeria played at the Africa tournament and sent some scouts to watch them in the opening match and we had a plan to work very close to them. Our plan was to mark them closely and work
on the wings and it almost worked out. Nigeria is superpower of world football at the junior level but the wing was the key to stopping them.
Three-time champions, the Golden Eaglets came from the brink of defeat to earn a 3-3 draw with debutants Sweden in a thrilling Group F match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup here.
In what could go down as one of the exciting matches (Going by the goals), Sweden raced to a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes, courtesy of two strikes by Varmin Bersha, in the 11th and 19th minutes, respectively.
Not wanting to go down without a fight, the Eaglets, reduced the deficit to a single digit, courtesy of a superb volley by African Nations Championship top scorer Success Isaac, who would later exit the match due to an injury.
With the Swedes exposing the poor defending by Eaglets’ short and lethargic defenders, Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Dele Ajampasu was also left at the mercy of the Europeans, who made use of their height and strong power play to muscle the Eaglets in the midfield.
With Kelechi Iheanacho failing to find his range and doing more work in the midfield, it was left for Musa Yahaya to draw Nigeria level three minutes into the second half.
The goal, a wonderful shot from the 18 yard box, beat goalkeeper Sisten Mohlin in goal for the Swede. In retrospect, he should have done better with the ball but great credit to Yahaya for having the courage to strike in the shot at a time that Nigeria’s attempt to play possession football was not working.
As Eaglets pushed for the winner, Mirza Halvadzic edged Sweden 3-2 up in the 65th minute, a goal that silenced the Nigerian fans, who before that goal believed that victory was on their way.
But Eaglets kept on prodding for the equalizer and deservedly got it nine minutes from regulation time through Taiwo Awoniyi.
Both teams looked for the winner but at the end of regulation time, the scores were 3-3, leaving Eaglets staying at the top of the table ahead of Friday’s final group games.

Politics › Atiku, 215 Others Sign Petition To End ASUU Strike by saasala(op): 11:23am On Oct 23, 2013
Two hundred and sixteen Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora have signed an online petition asking the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the industrial dispute which has kept public universities shut for four months.
The petition launched on change.org, a go-to site for web protests, is asking President Goodluck Jonathan and the National President of ASUU, Dr. Nassir Faggae, to reach an “amicable consensus.”
In the petition entitled, “Mr. President and the Academic Staff Union of Universities: Please End the ASUU Strike now,” the petitioners said the Presidency should stop playing politics with education of the Nigerian youth.
The petition read in part, “Since the ASUU strike began, it has been over half a semester, a lot in the life of students waiting at home, not knowing when the strike will be over. The future of Nigeria is at stake. Stop playing politics with education.
“It is urgent we send a message that it is long past time for the FG and ASUU to reach consensus and get students back to school by ending this strike.”
A majority of non-students who appended their signature to the petition noted that they joined the online protest with a view to crying out to ASUU and the FG to consider poor students whose parents cannot afford the luxury of sending them overseas to study like the sons and daughters of political office holders.
Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, joined other students and concerned Nigerians clamouring for a speedy end to the crisis rocking the higher education sector.
Atiku, who featured the link to the petition signing website on his Twitter handle, wrote, “We should never play politics with education. Our future depends on it. It is time for the FG and ASUU to reach a consensus and get students back to school by ending this strike.”
An Abuja-based post-graduate student in one of the public universities in the country, Mubarak Jubrin, expressing his dissatisfaction, wrote: “I am stuck with a semester to finish my Master’s programme. The FG should be doing everything possible to rescue the one institution left that is working towards producing better human beings who will shape the future of our dear country.”
Noting that prolonged shutting down of public universities is a dangerous omen for the society and development of the nation, a Kaduna-based student, Tarik Abubakar, also said Nigerians students were being denied their rights to education.
“Students in other countries are enjoying their rights to education. I am pleading with the FG and ASUU to settle their issue and call off the strike,” Abubakar stated.
A Nigerian student studying at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, Godspower Onwudiwe, lamented that the industrial action paints a bad picture of Nigeria on the international scene.
Onwudiwe stated, I feel so sorry for my beloved country because these incessant strikes are a barrier to her general development. Also, as a student in the Diaspora, it paints a very pitiful and shameful picture on our international identity.
“I cannot wait to not only see this strike end but also the end of future strikes to the detriment of the future of this generation and our country at large.”
Jemima Gana, who was moved to sign the petition because she believes that the status quo needs to change as the prosperous future of Nigeria depends on quality education, which is being threatened by the strike.
Gana, who according to the information she provided on the site, is based in Lagos, said Nigerian students need a stable learning environment devoid of strikes for them to be able to compete globally.
“It is so important to me because it is high time the FG took the value of education seriously and in high regard. Students in Nigeria need a stable environment to acquire knowledge and graduate on time in order to contribute their skills to the growth and development of this great nation,” she wrote.

Politics › Presidency Denies Media Reports Jonathan Will Lead 19 Governors To Israel. by saasala(op): 11:15am On Oct 23, 2013
The presidency yesterday described as a “misrepresentation of facts” media reports that president Goodluck Jonathan will lead 19 states governors and 30,000 Nigerians on a pilgrimage to Israel.
In a statement in Abuja yesterday, The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati said though the president will leave for Israel later today for a pilgrimage, ”irrespective of President Jonathan’s visit, thousands of Nigerians visit Israel annually during the pilgrimage season which goes on for months and they will undoubtedly do so again between now and early next year”.
The statement reads: “President Goodluck Jonathan will late Wednesday embark on a pilgrimage to Israel.
“President Jonathan will also meet with President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and members of the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset.
“Talks between President Jonathan’s delegation and Israeli government officials are expected to focus on the enhancement of bilateral relations between Nigeria and Israel in areas including trade, economic development, infrastructure, transportation, agriculture, communications, culture, education and tourism.
“The President is also scheduled to meet with the President of the Palestinian National Authority, Mr. Mahmoud Abbas.
“President Jonathan who will be accompanied on the trip by Senator Emmanuel Paulker, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Akinwunmi Adesina, the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, the Minister of Works, Arc. Mike Onolememen, the Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Prof Viola Onwuliri, and the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki will undertake a tour of some locations in Israel which are revered by Christians because of their association with the earthly mission of Jesus Christ.
“While the President may meet and interact with some other Nigerians who are already on a pilgrimage to Israel, reports in the media that he is leading 19 state governors and about 30,000 Nigerians to Israel are a misrepresentation of facts.
“Irrespective of President Jonathan’s visit, thousands of Nigerians visit Israel annually during the pilgrimage season which goes on for months and they will undoubtedly do so again between now and early next year.
“It is entirely fortuitous for some of these Nigerian pilgrims therefore that their visit to Israel this year will coincide with President Jonathan’s.
“President Jonathan is expected back in Abuja early next week” he said

Foreign Affairs › 44 Dead In Bangkok Plane Crash by saasala(op): 6:55pm On Oct 16, 2013
BANGKOK (AFP) – A Lao Airlines plane carrying 44 people, including French and Thai citizens, from the capital Vientiane to the southern town of Pakse crashed killing all on board on Wednesday, officials said.
At least seven French citizens and five Thais were among those killed when the plane carrying 39 passengers and five crew went down around eight kilometres (five miles) from the airport in Champasak province in southern Laos, officials said.
French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said he had learned of the deaths with “deep shock and great sadness” and that France was rushing embassy officials to the site of the crash.
Pakse is a hub for tourists travelling to more remote areas in southern Laos.
“I can now confirm, according to our reports, that all 44 people on board have died, including five Thai,” Thai foreign ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee told AFP.
Pictures on Thai television showed a small plane, half submerged in the river, with what appeared to be bodies lying on the banks.
An official at the South Korean embassy in Bangkok told Yonhap news agency that three South Koreans were also among the dead.
State-owned Lao Airlines confirmed the crash in a statement on its official Facebook page, in which it expressed “our condolences to family, friends, colleagues and relatives” of the passengers.
It said the aircraft hit “extreme” bad weather and had crashed into the Mekong River.
“There were no news of survivors at this time,” it said, but did not confirm the number of deaths.
“Lao Airlines is taking all necessary steps to coordinate and dispatch all rescue units to the accident site in the hope of finding survivors and at the same time informing relative of the passengers,” the English language statement said.
The QV301 flight set off from Vientiane on time at 2.45pm (0745 GMT) and was supposed to arrive in Paske just over an hour later, but crashed as it prepared to land.
A spokesman from aircraft manufacturer ATR in France confirmed the crash and told AFP that the state-owned Lao Airlines flight was one of its twin-engine turboprop ATR-72 planes. He said Lao Airlines has a fleet of six ATR-72 planes.
An official at the Vietnamese Embassy in Laos told AFP on condition of anonymity that all on board the plane had been killed.
Founded in 1976, the carrier operates a fleet of ATR-72 turboprop, Airbus A320 and Chinese-made MA60 planes, serving domestic airports and destinations in China, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, according to its website.
It has a chequered safety record.
The country has had 29 fatal air accidents since the 1950s, according to the Aviation Safety Network, whose data showed that the country’s safety record has improved dramatically in the last decade.
The last fatal air accident was in October 2000 when eight people died when a plane operated by the airline — then called Lao Aviation — crashed in remote mountains in the northeast of the country.
Communist Laos, landlocked between Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar and China, is a closed country with a secretive one-party government.
The nation of about seven million people is one of Asia’s poorest countries and is highly dependent on foreign donors.
The economy is relatively insulated from global trade and financial networks, though Laos has become a popular tourism destination and mining has played an increasingly important role in growth.

These guys are too funny. You ascribe the success of your music that preaches immoral lifestyle to God? Your fasting and prayers are not the reasons for your success, its obviously the devil who is using you to accomplish his mission in this morally decadent world owned and controlled by him.

God is never behind a music that preaches sex, love for money and women et al.

Sinch and Frank Edwords or Sam Ebube are in better positions to say this.

Before you start reprimanding me fellow nairaseunians, am a big fan of ps square and I love their immoral music and music videos.
