Read this and lets hear your candid opinion. Personally I agree with the writer. Churches are always at the forefront of development. Various religion-related centres promote building schools, hospitals, vocational skills acquisition centres, farms and cottage industries, and many. One should also note various scholarships, free books, food, clothes and even shelter. A church wants to ensure that its members live good and faithful lives before they pass away. However, the modern church slowly abandons old ideals, Vanguard notices and gives several clear examples: Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, July 6, 2014: A priest at a church offers the congregation to appreciate God with various contributions: N200,000 – special blessing; then N150,000, N100,000 and so on, to N50,000 to N5,000 and below. At the end of the day, the priest made a general blessing for the entire church. Apparently, nobody came out for N200,000 blessing. Pastor David Oyedepo of Living Faith Mission (Winners Chapel) owns several private jets, Gulfstream G550, Gulfstream G450, Gulfstream V and LearJet with combined value of $98.3million (N15.9billion). The General Overseer of RCCG Pastor E.A. Adeboye also owns Gulfstream V private jet. The President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Ayo Oritsejafor, leased one of his flying machines to cash smugglers for illegal weapons purchase in South Africa. The Pentecostal churches are in the lead for revenue drive. The income is big, but the programmes to help the poor are not big enough. Well-established churches keep opening private universities. Their fees range from N1.5 million to N3 million per session, so only the wealthy can afford it. At the same time, there are 10 to 80 per cent discounts for children and wards of the university’s staff, children of pastors and some indigent church members. Dr. Joseph Antyo of the University of Mkar, a private university in Benue State owned by the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) however believes that poverty issues in Nigeria cannot be solved without participation of churches. “Churches should see poverty eradication as a part of their mission of evangelisation, since not only spiritual but also material salvation is needed to truly free someone. Some of the money that some churches have should be made available to their members in form of loans and other poverty alleviation measures, and the churches should be able to build on their greatest strengths which are trust and commitment rather than dependency. “Churches should also motivate their members to work or to help create employment, since the lack of it is probably the greatest bane of Africa today,” he concluded. http://www.naij.com/311380-christianity-nigeria-rich-churches-poor-members.html |
Aisha Falode, the mother of Toba Falode who mysteriously died in February this year in Dubai, U.A.E. , writes an open letter to Nigerians. It is with a heavy heart that I read about the death of the son of Chief Alameiyeseigha on the streets of Dubai; an incident that immediately jolted me back in time thanks to the bizarre similarities to that of my son as regards “cause of death”. My son was said by the Dubai authorities to have jumped down from a balcony, dismissing it as “suicide”, same with Chief Alameiyeseigha’s son. I am saddened that this has happened despite my nationwide campaign to stop this happening AGAIN by putting all relevant government agencies on notice, in vain. For record emphasis, my son was thrown from the balcony of a 17th floor apartment in Manchester Tower in Dubai. A Saudi resident in Dubai confessed to the murder; he had my son’s blood on his t-shirt, he had my son’s blood on his knuckles and boasted about serving time for 25 years in prison if it comes to the worst. His murderer has a name—Faisal Aldakmary Al- Nasser. There were witnesses to this murder, they have written statements verbally and orally corroborating what the murderer said. I have put all this together to make this easy for the Nigerian government to help me get justice for my son in Dubai. I warned the Nigerian government that Nigerian youths were being killed in Dubai on a daily basis as confirmed by our embassy in Dubai. I also warned parents about the danger of Dubai. I also stated repeatedly, that if justice was not gotten for my son that another murder will happen. Indeed there have been many more after my son although not mentioned because they do not have a voice. But now, there is one so close to government that has been struck. I did not have to be a soothsayer to know this. Many more will happen until we get Justice for Toba Falode, and all those who have been murdered in cold blood in Dubai. We cannot stand by and watch our youths lives being down played over and above “collaboration and partnership” with a country that hates us with so much passion, that they are cutting down the lives of our young ones in cold blood crudely and viciously and yet we seek “partnership and collaboration” in investment with this same country. Our ambassador in the UAE, Ambassador Ibrahim Auwalu, must be called back to Nigeria to answer to every young soul that has been lost to Dubai unaccounted for due to his lack of responsibility in office. The Foreign Ministry also, must be asked questions on what they have done about Toba Falode’s case 8 months after. It took Israel less than 48 hours to act on the loss of their 3 youths. 8 months after Toba Falode’s murder, we are still waiting on the Nigerian government to give us any kind of reaction on the loss of a young life- Toba Falode in Dubai. Even after submitting every evidence, our protest, police reports corroborating the fact that my son was murdered, we still have gotten no response at all from the Nigerian government. Take a queue from Israel. And the Nigerian Government for once should start acting like a big country with so much might and power that it is in the continent and indeed in the world and go after Dubai for justice for every young soul and every Nigerian life that has been cut short in Dubai. We send our sympathy and condolences to DSP Alamieyeseigha. The family and friends of their son, we empathise with them because we have been through and are still going through it and it is nothing we wish for any parent which was our concern from the start. This is one death too many. May it not happen again. source: www.naij.com |

Dr Isuwa Adamu, Director-General, Nigerian Institute of Leather Science and Technology (NILEST), Zaria, on Tuesday warned against the consumption of animal hides and skin known locally as “ponmo”. Adamu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the consumption of the product as meat substitute was dangerous to health. According to him, scientifically, ponmo does not have any nutritional value to human health. “In fact, it is not advisable for you to consume ponmo in the sense that some of the animals killed and used for ponmo actually have skin diseases. “Some of these skin diseases are such that boiling them ordinarily, may not kill the bacteria,’’ Adamu said. He added that some of the animals killed had been ill and undergoing injections but the rearers went ahead to kill them, leaving the buyers vulnerable to chemicals in the animal skin. “Some of the animals because of the ailments that they have gone through, are sometimes treated by way of injection with chemicals. “People don’t allow these chemicals to complete its cycle and be removed from the body; they sometimes go ahead to kill these animals. “So, if you consume the ponmo, the tendency is that you are consuming the chemicals directly because the skin part of the animal retains most of the harmful substances. “Remember your skin is the major protective organ of your body and your skin harbours so many of the harmful things that are supposed to penetrate into your body,’’ he explained. He added that the skin of animals harbour so many of the harmful waste materials that the body secretes and boiling only could not remove some of those wastes. The NILEST boss said the institute was putting up efforts to sensitise the public and advise governments on policies that will help to reduce the consumption of animal skin to the barest minimum. According to him, ponmo consumption is a national and traditional issue that just putting up laws may not really help to stop it. Adamu advised the government to come up with policies that could be enforced to reduce the consumption of hides and skin as meat substitute. He added that this would enhance the quality and quantity of raw hides and skin that are available to meet the demands of the tanneries. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/ponmo-consumption-dangerous-health/ |

PC in troubled waters as Buhari remains adamant, refuses to step down for younger candidates By Ali Adoyi on September 30, 2014 @dailypostngr Former President, and one of the Presidential hopefuls under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari has remained unyielding , despite pressure from different angles that he should give up the 2015 election in order to give younger people the opportunity to contest in an election the party has vowed to be ‘a do-or- die’ contest. This decision has not only manifested in Buhari’s recent comment and consultations with party stalwarts, but has been displayed even at several gatherings of the party’s caucus where he showed no sign of a politician willing to listen to the advice of others as it concerns the 2015. Recent events showed that the former Head of State is almost getting to the finish line of his presidential ambition, as he is now working to ensure that the October 8 formal declaration turns out successful. Buhari who undoubtedly has cult followers and loyalists across the country, especially in the North-eastern part of the country will be making a 4th attempt to govern the country. His several attempts have however become his greatest undoing as some of the APC members are of the views that it will be regrettable if the party opt for Buhari as the daunting criticism has always been that he is advanced in age and as such cannot be supported by majority of the country’s youth. Buhari has however not allowed those issues raised by most of his party members to bother him, as he believes he can rule the country at any age. This is apparently why he plans to address a collection of several youth support groups from various parts of Abuja today. Sources told DailyPost that the target of the Buhari group is to ensure that the youths are convinced that age does not really matter in governance and that those who are advanced in age and have gathered experience understand more the problems of the youth than those who are still within the youth circles. With this development, the North appears to have been divided over Buhari’s candidacy as one of the groups working towards the realization of Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s presidential bid, the Kwakwasiyya Forum, has continued to call on Buhari to rescind his decision to contest for the fourth time. The group has asked Buhari to leave power to the younger ones and continue to play advisory role in the polity. In their appeal to Buhari, they asked him to support a younger candidate like Kwankwaso. The group had cautioned the APC to carefully handle the struggle that appears to be imminent among Buhari, Kwankwaso and Atiku Abubakar, asking the party to ensure that such struggle for power does not destroy the party. Speaking to journalists in Abuja yesterday through its Edo State coordinator, Mr. Francis Ikonomwan, the pro-Kwankwaso group said it was working round the clock to reach out to the delegates and ensure that Kwankwaso emerges as APC’s presidential candidate for the highly coveted 2015 election. “We want a paradigm shift; we want a change from the old order and this is why people are clamouring for a realistic change. We have looked at the track record and Kwankwaso is the man that actually meets the demands of the people. “As for Alhaji Atiku, he has lost integrity, you may see people around him, they are hired crowds. Nigerians don’t want him. On General Buhari, he is a man we used to respect, he is a man Nigerians hold in high esteem, but we are surprised that he will be declaring Next week. “Remember he told us after the 2011 elections that he will not contest again and we expect him to stick to his words as a man of integrity. If he contests again, that shows that he is no longer a man of integrity. “I want to say that the ambitions of Atiku and General Buhari will tear APC apart. What is best for them is to come behind a younger person and no other person than Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,” he said. A source in the fold of the APC has told DailyPost that, the party is currently in one of its trying times, and coming out of the current turbulent time without harm may mean a massive victory for the party even in the 2015 contest against the PDP. He said ‘’ I think we are in for a big trouble, considering that we have not been able to reach consensus yet, but all the same, if we scale through this one, then consider PDP defeated, ‘’ a sources who pleaded not to be mentioned in print said. |
