IbeOkehie:
Racism rampant in the USA? LOL, not true at all.

I personally think there's very little racism in the USA, it's negligible. Let's put it this way, racism in the USA is much less than the tribalism in Nigeria. Add to that, the standard of living compensates mightily for whatever discomforts you might experience.

All these threads and comments comparing the USA to Nigeria would be more credible if participants used their real names. I've lived in the USA over 30 years, I arrived as a teenager and have lived in different states. I also moved back to Nigeria at a point and lived there for a while. So I think I know what I'm on about. Racism has been a very minor issue for me in the USA, it's not even an issue really. I definitely experienced more prejudice in Nigeria.

As for migration, for a Nigerian of poor or average means, the USA is definitely a better place to live in ALL respects. I hope the people in Nigeria will find a way to improve their country. I truly wish the best for the people of Nigeria.

Have a good Sunday.
Yes, racism is rampant in the USA! You are most likely living in a city with large numbers of Blacks and hence your limited experience with racism. Another thing, people can even experience racism and not even aware that they are experiencing it. If you live in a predominantly white neighborhood or city.....you will definitely experience lots of racism. Those that live in Black neighborhoods would have different kind of experience. I am calling it as it is.
My advice for Nigerians coming over to the USA, please plan well and come over....but do your due diligence and live in a city with lots of Blacks and you would have lots of great experiences.

can you please enlighten us in the par you used?? No offense.
I have lived in the UK for several years before relocating to the USA. Believe it or not, the USA is miles ahead of the UK in most areas of life. Nigerians/ foreigners do better for themselves in the USA than the UK, and the USA has far more opportunities than the little UK.
I have experienced both places and I cannot imagine living in the UK ever again.

For one, Indianapolis is filled with lots of Nigerians and lots of African stores. No dull moment once you mix with them.
Yes, lots of Nigerians/ Africans/ Blacks in Indianapolis .....but very low percentage for the entire State. Better for people to focus on cities than States.

Awesome! Thank you so much for the response Sir. If I may ask pls, like which areas in the United States do we have alot of Nigerians there? So one does not get homesick so long so can still see your fellow country men there. I'll love to plan towards such a place
There are many States with high population of Nigerians/ Africans/ Blacks in general. Examples: Maryland, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Washington DC (Not a State, but capital territory), Virginia, California, Georgia, etc. You can go online and research each State and the cities with lots of Blacks.

Wow! Nice one Sir! I kindly want to ask pls, how's life over there in the USA compared with the UK for someone in the medical field?
Also, in regards to "racism", is it that rampant over there as the media portraits it?
Life in the USA can be very rewarding if you have your papers and get employment in an area with good / high demand. USA is definitely better than the UK from my own experience, especially if you are in the medical field. Yes, racism is rampant in the USA, as well as in Europe and other countries. But don't allow racism to discourage you, as you can live in the city/ town with reasonable percentage of Blacks and other ethnic minorities. You will feel very much at home living in the area with a lot of Nigerians.
TravelRe: My Travails, My Exodus and Life in the U.S by Sagewood: 7:51am On Feb 12, 2022
USA is the best country to relocate to for Nigerians if that's part of your plan. But it is better to be well informed about the life here, the system and the expectations.....the most important thing would be getting your legal papers. Once you have crossed that bridge, the possibilities and opportunities will be abundant as long as you are ready to work hard.
I don't expect most Nigerians to take the path I took to come over to the USA as everyone may be on different situations in life. Don't let anyone discourage you to take the right steps to make the move.
I have lived in the UK for several years before moving to the USA with my family and I had work authorization and job waiting for me before I even landed. USA is a great place to achieve your dreams. But doing it right is critical to your success here.

TravelRe: USA Or England: Which Is The More Racist Country? by Sagewood: 10:37pm On Jan 01, 2014
Let Nigerians develop Nigeria. Let us stop waiting for "manna" from the West. With the huge human and natural resources in Africa, we are still looking up to them to "help" us. Racism or no racism, let us leapfrog development and racism will not matter to us. If u are very successful, racism will turn to admiration.
TravelRe: USA Or England: Which Is The More Racist Country? by Sagewood: 9:06pm On Jan 01, 2014
Does it matter which country is more racist? It will depend on your personal experiences and perceptions. There are no empirical studies to draw conclusons from. I have lived in the UK and now living in the USA. Racism can be subtle or overt. Your sensitivity may also play a part on how u view racism. Let us joins hands and develop our country and continent. More intra African trades.

PropertiesRe: Have You Ever Seen A Well-Built African House On CNN Or BBC? by Sagewood:
@ Rossike,

Thanks for bringing this up. The fact is many Nigerians (both NID and NIN) don't understand the complex web of games the "west" use to
dupe and manipulate Africa and other unsuspecting parts of the world to maintain "hegemony" and status quo.
Wake up Africa! No country or group of countries, no matter how magnanimous, will help build another country.
Africans have this mistaken believe that the western nations will "help" them improve their lots in life. No, it will not happen!
The destiny of Africa and Africans lies deeply and squarely in the hands of Africans. Period!!
Now concerning the way, CNN, BBC and other western media organizations portray Africa in mostly negative stereotypes have a lot to do
with power play and money than benevolence or charitable deeds.
The Chinese, Indians, Brazilians and others, now know better and are aggressively developing their countries and charting their own
manifest destinies.
We can complain to BBC or CNN if we want. But will that change the story? I believe what we can do is to start writing about all the good things happening and about to happen in Nigeria and Africa, and let the world see Africa from our own very eyes.

Note: For those trading insults and getting really nasty and personal, please stop! Use this medium to educate others or debate your points.

PropertiesRe: What Drives Real Estate Valuation In Nigeria? by Sagewood:
@ Cyberknight,

The thread has been quite informative with interesting view points.
As someone who own properties in the US, UK and Nigeria, I can tell you that there are varied and inherent
differences, challenges, and opportunities in the West and Nigeria. While the US, and the UK have very similar
mortgage systems, the property markets have some little differences, and comparing them to the Nigerian market
can be fraught with false assumptions for the would- be property investors.
There are major advantages and disadvantages of investing in the West Vs. Nigeria. Most of the points have been
extensively deliberated.
Back to the main issue of discussion.
What drives valuation and property prices: Only two things, and they remain simple economic forces of demand and supply.
That's the bottom line.
That's true of the West and Nigeria, and of course, everywhere in the planet. We can debate what
contribute to the demand and supply, and how good governance can and should make a big difference by building verifiable and reliable
database infrastructure of lands, buildings and super- structures. The Abuja AGIS is already leading the way in this regard.

From my experience, I will prefer to invest more in Nigerian properties than the West because of one main reason: the capacity for growth.

I believe you thoroughly and soundly nailed the biggest issues with property market development in Nigeria in the bolded statements below.

Cyberknight: Mr Bugmenot,
I understand your point that an asset bought outright is less likely to give problems than one bought with credit. That is inherent in the nature of the credit system itself. However, my contention is that there is no place for such a comparison because the advantage in itself of having a credit system in place for the purchase of major assets far outweighs any disadvantages of the system and CANNOT in any way be compared to what obtains in the absence of a credit system. Most people given the option of owning an asset on to be paid over time or possibly NOT owning one at all (or late in life, or not what you'd want to own given a choice) would take the former option.

From reading your posts, I get the impression that you disapprove of the use of the way many people abuse the credit system in developed countries, usually by taking on excessive liabilities and especially w.r.t the financing of property purchases. Naturally, when credit is available, people who have no self-control or proper judgment shall most definitely fall prey to the lure of buy now and pay later. That is human nature. But the fact that there are so many apparent victims of the mortgage crisis does not mean that the system of mortgage financing itself is inherently defective.

I do agree with you that valuations are not likely to drop anytime soon in Nigeria. I also agree that the banks are not necessarily to blame for the absence of credit facilities for property acquisition in Nigeria; its a structural failure for which the government or what passes for it bears 100% of the blame. For a credit system to work, there must be a functioning judicial system to make it easy for lenders to recover their money, an easily consultable and modern land register where property transactions can be recorded and accessed and finally (but most importantly) lower interest rates.
TravelRe: Ask Me Any Questions About America, straight Talk from a Nigerian in America by Sagewood: 7:47am On Oct 18, 2013
@ All,

No need for name- calling or negativity.
I have lived in the UK and now in the USA and acquired citizenship of both countries.
I have a lot of experience living in Nigeria, Europe and America, and had the opportunity to visit
few countries in Africa, Asia and Australia. I have been there and done that, as Americans would say.
America remains the greatest country now and likely for a long time as far as economic opportunities are concerned.
America presents you with the good, the bad and the ugly, just like most countries.

Even as a doctor with specialist qualifications and degrees, America can still be tough.
Everyone can make it in the USA, just that you need to take the right steps, study smart (professions in demand) and
work very hard. Give it some years, you will be successful and achieve your goals.
Life is not a bed of roses in America or anywhere in the planet, but America is far better than most places.
TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by Sagewood: 6:16am On Oct 06, 2013
I am very much aware of everything you mentioned and much more. I take time to get informed. Like I stated earlier, I am a specialist doctor. America remains the greatest country for opportunities, and whether America falls on the burdens of the ballooning debt or not, that will not
deter me from pursuing my goals.
If you are too worried about America's debt, you can expand your investment portfolio and have some in Nigeria and other places.
The bottom line is this: make the most of the present opportunities wherever you are and prepare for the uncertain future.

cap28: Are you aware of the fact that America's national debt currently stands at a staggering $17 trillion and rising?

America has only been able to stay afloat because it forced all oil producing countries to accept the US dollar in exchange for their oil exports
since all industrialised nations require oil to grow their economy this caused an artificially high demand for the US dollar - as a result the US economy has been able to live well above its means, it spends much much more than it produces, but it can only do this because it has access to credit facilities due to the fact that the dollar is currently still regarded as a valuable currency if this position changes you are going to see astronomical hyperinflation which will lead to escalation in cost of living in the US and believe me with the level of violence that exists in that country now you don't want to know how violent it will become when many people will not be able to afford to buy things that most americans have taken for granted for years like food.

watch this video and you will understand where America is headed:

The thing is always gravitate towards the area where your qualifications will be needed, otherwise, it will be harder.
As for the Black Americans, they should not wait for anyone to help them, they can organize themselves and push their agendas
in the political, social, and economic arenas. Heaven help those who help themselves!
