CALL TO BAR: I am compelled to share this that
Firdaus Amasa Up To A Veiled Mischief.

I have refrained from commenting on the trending controversy surrounding the defiance of one Firdaus Amasa (an Ilorin Muslim lady) to adhere to the hallowed Regulation of appropriate dressing for Call to the Nigerian Bar. This is because most commentators supportive of her infractions have added the delicate colours of religion to the topic. Sadly, I have observed many Lawyers here and many of my Law School mates, who obeyed the Rules themselves, but now chose to give credence to the lady's improper conduct. Unfortunately, we have chosen to elevate mundane issues above more important matters that will prosper and progress our country.

For a start, I am a 'small authority' on matters of students discipline, regulation and conduct in the Nigerian Law School, having been the Head of Bar part 1 (Foreign Students) programme and the first Bar 1 student to be voted President of the Students Representatives Council (SRC) during the Bar part 2 programme, and thus becoming the longest serving President of Law School students. I have intervened on countless occasions to retrieve seized jewelleries of ladies and 'inappropriate' ties and other attires of male students from the Students Affairs office. I intervened on students campus postings. I was awarded the "Face of Nigerian Law School" and "Most Influential Student" during our time and up to this day I maintain a great amount of influence in that noble ground. Even as President then, I was kindly turned back twice for wearing simple skin slippers on Kaftan instead of sandals, on Friday. I was once reprimanded for wearing black tie with touches of red. I operated under a Muslim DG of the Nigerian Law School, my boss - the amiable Prof. Tahir Mamman (SAN), who made sure the Regulations were applied strictly. On two occasions I was invited to the Students Disciplinary Committee to be informed of the expulsion of students. One that hurts me deeply was the case of a fellow Bar 1 students (the Secretary of our Bar 1 Electoral Committee) who was expelled with just a week to the Bar finals. Reason: the School received a petition from his wife in the UK (where he schooled and was resident)on some flimsy grounds spurred by the allegations that he married another wife in Nigeria, on coming for his Law School. Thomas Ogwumba later died after some of us were Called to Bar.

The Council of Legal Education regulates the affairs of the Nigerian Law School up to the time of Call to Bar. The Body of Benchers is responsible for the formal Call to the Bar. It was established under the Legal Practitioners Act (LPA), now CAP L11, LFN 2004. Both of these bodies
make certain regulations towards upholding the core values of the legal profession and issues of discipline. On admission to the Law School, students are made to sign forms that bind them to the Rules and Regulations of the School, and towards the end of the programme students are again made to sign the Benchers form and deposed to a jurat indicating that they have CONSENTED to abide by the Rules and Regulations and all other instructions necessarily incidental.

The Law School dressing code sometimes have little variations on subjects relating to Hijab, but it has always been static for Call to Bar: no Hijab, no weave-on, no jewelleries, etc. Presently, the Kano campus of the Law School located in a strict Muslim state, does NOT allow the use of Hijab! The Abuja campus allows for a black, light Hijab but only a head scarf at best for Dinners.

In the attached pictures, 1 is me and Halima Mohammadu Buhari, the daughter of the President Buhari of Nigeria, during our Bar 1 programme in July 2012. Such Hijab was permissible then. Picture 2 was Dinner dressing with head scarf for ladies. Pictures 3 &4 are those of the same Halima Buhari during her Call to Bar. No scarf, no Hijab, only compliance (for a 2 hour programme). She consented for her 'rights' to be curtailed. Picture 5 is the President's daughter with my wife at a social event in Ado Rock, strictly adhering to her Muslim doctrines. I used the analogy of the President's daughter because it is a well known fact that she comes from a strictly devout Muslim family. All religious scriptures admonish us to obey God (Allah) while also respecting earthly authorities (Caesar) - see Quran 4:59.

In the Law School, those who live in the hostels consented to their freedom of movement to be 'breached.' Abuja headquarters campus hostels are locked with chains and locks every midnight. No one comes out nor goes in. That is the Rule. There was a night I was woken up by a group led by the current Team Manager of Rangers FC of Enugu, Amobi Ezeaku, to the effect that a thief just burgled a student's room on the first floor via the balcony and I had to reach out to the Hostel Porter to open the Hostel gate to enable us be in pursuit of the felon. The delay in opening the gate enabled the thief escape.

Nigerian legal system differs from those of other jurisdictions to some extent. This is why I fault the unfortunate statement allegedly made by the NBA President in his comparison of our Bar to that of New York. Some British Inns, for instance, allow for the wearing of Hijab. My classmate (an Indian Sikh), Kernail Singh, was Called dressed in his turban. I know as a fact that Black and White is a strict dress code for Nigerian University and Law School students, but in England where I studied for my undergraduate Degree in Law, no one cares if you come to the class wearing football shorts and basketball vest with 'unity' cap. There were times my Jurisprudence module lecturer would appear in a tight T-shirt exposing his cute biceps and crazy tattoos, and my mind would whisper to itsel, "this won't happen in Naija!" In the BPTC programme, students appear in various colours of suits and shirts.

Back to Firdaus Amasa, her defiance was clearly premeditated and designed for a veiled mischief. On the said day of her Call, after rudely standing against the traditional dress code, she was invited to the Benchers Room behind the stage at the International Conference Centre to meet with a Life Bencher and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Alfa Belgore (himself a STRICT Muslim/Ilorin elder) who told her to remove the veil and join her colleagues in the hall. She refused. The Secretary of the Body of Benchers (a devout Muslim woman), Mrs Turaki, also joined in instructing her to do the needful. She refused again. Incidentally, Statutorily, the Body of Benchers Secretary is vested with the responsibility to ensure that Rules, Regulations and Procedures of the Body are adhered to according to stipulated law.

In the end, by opting for the legal profession in Nigeria and by agreeing to come to the Law School and accepting to sign all the forms with attendant jurats, one has unambiguously concur to abide by the Rules, Regulations and Procedures of the Council of Legal Education and Body of Benchers. The whole gist points out to one thing: Volenti non fit injuria, put in other words, CONSENT! Therefore, no Firdaus Amasa, her instigators and supporters are potent enough to alter this time hallowed procedure deeply steeped in tradition and conservatism. I bet that the conservative nature of the Benchers may lead them to applying more sanctions against the lady for even claiming she acted on purpose.

As a country, the challenges we face are real and deep. We can only surmount them if we concentrate on things that unite us rather on such things as the menace of sentimentalism that seek to further divide us.

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress APC in a statement issued on Thursday in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital described the celebration of the birthday of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on 13th December as celebration of treachery, deceit and fraud. According to the party, “it is unfortunate and sad that the almighty Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who is today the jewel and pride of the opposition political party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) doesn’t know his date of birth.” Though this maybe shocking to the outside world but those of us who are his close associates are not shocked a bit knowing his antecedents as a fellow who is capable of using any method whether sinister, unholy, untoward or otherwise to achieve any task he sets his mind to achieve including deceiving the world on his day of birth.

The APC in a statement signed by its State Chairman, Chief (Dr.) Davies Ibiamu Ikanya and circulated by Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze his Media Consultant today said, “We have read several birthday messages from both his family members, political associates etc celebrating his birthday on 13th December while the documents he presented to INEC and some educational Institutions on oath indicates that he was actually born on March 13, 1963 and not December, 13th 1968 as he makes the world to believe. Sadly as if he is not contented with been born on two different days the great Google on the other hand claims that Governor Wike was born on 24th August, 1967. What a feat! An individual claiming three different days as his birthday.” Both his age declaration form, sample of his birthday celebration and the Google’s stand are attached for doubting ‘Thomasess’.

Text of the statement reads:

According to the age declaration sworn by his elder brother, Chief Collins Wike and Clergy father and presented to INEC and some educational Institutions, Governor Wike is said to be born on March 13, 1963. This date contradicts the new age of 13th December, 1968 and the Google date of 24th August, 1967.

To some funny PDP Leaders, Wike is not only a reputable leader but the embodiment of the alien democracy being practised by PDP.

In a congratulatory birthday message signed by Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP new National Publicity Secretary, Governor Wike was described as “the jewel and pride of not only the Party and Rivers State but also the nation at large” PDP went further to hail Governor Wike for his political sagacity which had propelled the party to greater heights. It is sad that such character as Gov Wike because he has continued to waste the Rivers State funds to sponsor the activities of PDP he has become the face and hero of democracy. To us in APC, “If such a character is the jewel of PDP, Nigerians need not be told what the party PDP is made up with and what they are capable of doing, the statement signed by Dr Davies Ibiamu Ikanya the Rivers State APC Chairman stated.

According to the APC statement, the alien democracy that Wike’s PDP is practicing is democracy of fraud, high-tech looting, high level of impunity and high-tech election rigging tactics as acted during her just concluded elective convention and it will be a disaster for this country if such a party is voted back to power.

It is unfortunate that Rivers State is being governed by such a character and his wife – a High Court Judge is celebrating him on National TV while knowing that 13th December is not his birthday. This is the man positioning himself as the leader of PDP, a party that was founded by some great minds like Alex Ekwueme, Solomon Lar, Abubakar Rimi who are currently weeping profusely in their graves over the current state of the party that they put their lives on line to establish, how is the mighty fallen. This is a man threatening that if he is not given the office of Vice President that he will scatter the party. We feel sad when some of our best brains like OCJ Okocha, SAN, former President of the NBA look upon Governor Wike as the Messiah of Rivers State.

If Wike can be involved in this type of act of not knowing the date of his birthday or rather presenting forged documents as his birthday certificate why should the world believe or accept funny documents he cooked up in order to indict an innocent man like Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi erstwhile Governor of Rivers State and incumbent Minister of Transportation.

To is patriotic Nigerians, instead of celebrating Wike’s fraudulent birthday, Nigerians should be mourning that a man without vision who governs a State without any budgetary provision; sponsoring anti FSARS groups to allow criminals pervades Rivers State, who in the midst of plenty owes a lot of backlog in salaries to civil servants and arrears of pension to pensioners. A man well versed and notorious in embarking on low-value projects spiced up with massive media coverage. A man who has destroyed our education by recalling our students on scholarship overseas, etc, in addition to several other atrocities is today the jewel and leader of a great political party like PDP.

As much as we as a political party wish Governor Wike God’s stead but we need to wait till 13th March, 2018 or August 24 2018 to formally send to him our official birthday gifts and card.

•PDP chairmanship contest down to three-man race
•South-West aspirants to produce consensus candidate

Journalists and supporters of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar were, yesterday, shocked after the former vice-president came out from a meeting with former President Ibrahim Babangida with a long face reflective of a red card shown to his 2019 presidential aspiration.

Atiku, who arrived Minna airport to a cheerful reception from his supporters, breezed past the same supporters after a one and half hour closed-door meeting with Babangida during which the latter was said to have asked him to forget his presidential aspiration.

Meanwhile, the leadership contest for Atiku’s new political platform, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was, last night, turning into a heated three-man contest in the most competitive leadership contest in the history of the party.

Ahead of the contest scheduled to play out tomorrow, Prince Uche Secondus, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, and Prof. Tunde Adeniran were said to have emerged out of the pack of eight candidates in a contest in which the dominance of the governors was being put to serious test.

Ahead of the election tomorrow, party officials have scheduled a meeting with all nine declared candidates for this morning. It was the expectation of some of party chieftains, last night, that this morning’s meeting would be used to build a consensus among the candidates.

Yesterday, following series of meetings among the six Southwest candidates in Abuja, it emerged that some of them were inclining themselves towards a consensus candidate from the region.

A consensus was yet to be arrived at mainly because Prof. Adeniran, who has acquired a national momentum, has, however, failed to impress his home base.

The meeting between the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led Convention Committee and the eight candidates scheduled for 10.00 a.m. at the National Secretariat of the party is to be followed by another meeting with candidates in the other 20 positions on offer tomorrow and subsequently with chairmen of the state chapters of the party.

Atiku meets Babangida

The former Vice President arrived the Minna International Airport in a private aircraft, marked T7AAA, at about 12.15 p.m.

He was met at the Airport by Niger State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ketso, and a team of PDP officials, led by the immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu; the state party chairman, Tanko Beji, among others.

Atiku then proceeded to greet scores of supporters who had been waiting to welcome him but had not been allowed by airport security personnel to approach the tarmac.

Following the airport ceremonies, he immediately drove straight to the former Military President’s uphill mansion and on arrival, was ushered into one of the sitting rooms.

After the exchange of pleasantries, Atiku, Babangida and former Governor Aliyu were left alone.
Vanguard gathered that after spending about 45 minutes in the meeting, Aliyu was also excused out of the sitting room, leaving only Atiku and Babangida who stayed together for another one and half hours.

Though none of the two men spoke at the end of the meeting, Vanguard reliably gathered that the ambition of the former president hit a brick wall as Gen. Babangida was said to have advised him to drop his presidential ambition.
Atiku, who was besieged by anxious journalists immediately after the long meeting, snubbed them as his security aides prevented them from even going close to him.

“Please pave way; he is not ready to speak with you,’’ the body guards chorused, as their boss made straight for his waiting vehicle that drove him to the airport.

At the airport, the former Vice President also shunned party supporters and journalists who had waited patiently to bid him bye-bye.

Wearing a long face, the former vice president walked straight into the aircraft; a development Vanguard gathered arose from the negative nod from President Babangida to his presidential aspiration.

Southwest works on consensus

Meanwhile, the nine aspirants for the chairmanship of the PDP were, yesterday, perfecting their plans.
The candidates from the Southwest in an apparent move to cut down the number of aspirants heading into the contest tomorrow were, last night, engrossed in a meeting which was allegedly being spearheaded by Senator Rasheed Ladoja who had also met one-on-one with nearly all the aspirants.

The candidates, who met on Wednesday in Senator Ladoja’s office, were still locked over the issue at press time, last night.

Ladoja told Vanguard, last night: “The decision stemmed from a meeting in my office. It is true we are working on a consensus candidate.”

Further meetings by the Southwest candidates, Vanguard learned, are continuing today and an agreement may not be reached until early tomorrow morning.

Dokpesi vows to pursue contest to convention ground

Irrespective of the move by the Southwest, Dr. Dokpesi was unbending, yesterday, in his quest, vowing that the contest would go to the convention ground.

Dismissing claims that he was stepping down, Dokpesi in a statement issued by Mr. Ide Eguabor, Chairman of the Dokpesi Campaign Organisation said: “It has come to my attention and that of the Raymond Dokpesi Campaign Organization that speculations are rife to the effect that our principal, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi has succumbed to political pressure and agreed to drop out of the race for the office of the national chairman of our great party (PDP).

Meanwhile, the Adeniran campaign organisation, yesterday, declared its satisfaction with responses to its petitions ahead of the party’s convention, assuring that Adeniran was ready for the delegate election.

In a media briefing by the Director General of his campaign organisation, Shehu Gabam, Adeniran said governors elected on the platform of the party have all pledged to make the convention credible and transparent.

Gabam, who noted that the campaigns so far have been issue-based stressed that aspirants have been interacting amongst themselves with a view to making the party stronger regardless of who emerges the winner at the end of the contest.

Secondus, who had emerged as the favourite in the consideration of the alleged support of the governors was, last night, huddled in meetings with different caucuses including National Assembly.

The prospects of Secondus, Vanguard gathered last night, was, however, receiving serious challenge mainly from Dokpesi and Adeniran who were building up momentum some party enthusiasts say may only be determined on the convention ground.

Journalists and supporters of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar were, yesterday, shocked after the former vice-president came out from a meeting with former President Ibrahim Babangida with a long face reflective of a red card shown to his 2019 presidential aspiration.

Atiku, who arrived Minna airport to a cheerful reception from his supporters, breezed past the same supporters after a one and half hour closed-door meeting with Babangida during which the latter was said to have asked him to forget his presidential aspiration.

Meanwhile, the leadership contest for Atiku’s new political platform, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was, last night, turning into a heated three-man contest in the most competitive leadership contest in the history of the party.

Ahead of the contest scheduled to play out tomorrow, Prince Uche Secondus, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, and Prof. Tunde Adeniran were said to have emerged out of the pack of eight candidates in a contest in which the dominance of the governors was being put to serious test.

Ahead of the election tomorrow, party officials have scheduled a meeting with all nine declared candidates for this morning. It was the expectation of some of party chieftains, last night, that this morning’s meeting would be used to build a consensus among the candidates.

Yesterday, following series of meetings among the six Southwest candidates in Abuja, it emerged that some of them were inclining themselves towards a consensus candidate from the region.

A consensus was yet to be arrived at mainly because Prof. Adeniran, who has acquired a national momentum, has, however, failed to impress his home base.

The meeting between the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led Convention Committee and the eight candidates scheduled for 10.00 a.m. at the National Secretariat of the party is to be followed by another meeting with candidates in the other 20 positions on offer tomorrow and subsequently with chairmen of the state chapters of the party.

Atiku meets Babangida

The former Vice President arrived the Minna International Airport in a private aircraft, marked T7AAA, at about 12.15 p.m.

He was met at the Airport by Niger State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ketso, and a team of PDP officials, led by the immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu; the state party chairman, Tanko Beji, among others.

Atiku then proceeded to greet scores of supporters who had been waiting to welcome him but had not been allowed by airport security personnel to approach the tarmac.

Following the airport ceremonies, he immediately drove straight to the former Military President’s uphill mansion and on arrival, was ushered into one of the sitting rooms.

After the exchange of pleasantries, Atiku, Babangida and former Governor Aliyu were left alone.
Vanguard gathered that after spending about 45 minutes in the meeting, Aliyu was also excused out of the sitting room, leaving only Atiku and Babangida who stayed together for another one and half hours.

Though none of the two men spoke at the end of the meeting, Vanguard reliably gathered that the ambition of the former president hit a brick wall as Gen. Babangida was said to have advised him to drop his presidential ambition.
Atiku, who was besieged by anxious journalists immediately after the long meeting, snubbed them as his security aides prevented them from even going close to him.

“Please pave way; he is not ready to speak with you,’’ the body guards chorused, as their boss made straight for his waiting vehicle that drove him to the airport.

At the airport, the former Vice President also shunned party supporters and journalists who had waited patiently to bid him bye-bye.

Wearing a long face, the former vice president walked straight into the aircraft; a development Vanguard gathered arose from the negative nod from President Babangida to his presidential aspiration.

Southwest works on consensus

Meanwhile, the nine aspirants for the chairmanship of the PDP were, yesterday, perfecting their plans.
The candidates from the Southwest in an apparent move to cut down the number of aspirants heading into the contest tomorrow were, last night, engrossed in a meeting which was allegedly being spearheaded by Senator Rasheed Ladoja who had also met one-on-one with nearly all the aspirants.

The candidates, who met on Wednesday in Senator Ladoja’s office, were still locked over the issue at press time, last night.

Ladoja told Vanguard, last night: “The decision stemmed from a meeting in my office. It is true we are working on a consensus candidate.”

Further meetings by the Southwest candidates, Vanguard learned, are continuing today and an agreement may not be reached until early tomorrow morning.

Dokpesi vows to pursue contest to convention ground

Irrespective of the move by the Southwest, Dr. Dokpesi was unbending, yesterday, in his quest, vowing that the contest would go to the convention ground.

Dismissing claims that he was stepping down, Dokpesi in a statement issued by Mr. Ide Eguabor, Chairman of the Dokpesi Campaign Organisation said: “It has come to my attention and that of the Raymond Dokpesi Campaign Organization that speculations are rife to the effect that our principal, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi has succumbed to political pressure and agreed to drop out of the race for the office of the national chairman of our great party (PDP).
