Ever been to Idi-Ara when the Lagos state University Teaching Hospital is situated? Then you will know that this calls for immediate and urgent call for action. LUTH is a reputed to be one of the best in the country, but this is definitely not in terms of infrastructure given the pathetic state of the access road to the hospital. From the first gate to the second gate, it is in its deplorable state. This same road is where vehicles which are bringing in emergencies will pass through. I know some will argue that this road is still good compare to other roads in the state, but what's worth doing is worth doing well. These are visuals we are able to get courtesy of YNaija Monitor!

Car TalkNirvana Autogyro's Gyrodrive Becomes World’s First Street Legal Flying Car by saints2(op): 2:36am On Jun 18, 2017
Flying cars have proved this year that they are far from just a science fiction concept, but the winner of the race to become street legal is autogyro, a Czech helicopter company who’s ‘gyrodrive’ vehicle has now been officially authorized to travel both road and sky. The unique vehicle is more a ‘copter than a car, yet has been modified to be able to be driven on the public road. The car has been developed by Pavel Brezina, a pilot who has been in the industry for 30 years. the two-seater vehicle can reach up to 25 mph on the ground, but once it takes to the air the gyro drive can speed along at 110 mph.

The vehicle is based on the form of a gyroplane–a mini helicopter that uses a helicopter-style rotor to move up and down, along with a plane type propeller to drive it forward. Once landed, all the driver has to do is pop on a license place and attach the main rotor blades into a still position, and the copter-come-car is ready to hit the road.

TravelLagos Appoves New LAGBUS Fares, Unveils New Price List by saints2(op): 5:32pm On Feb 13, 2017
Passengers using the LAGBUS and Bus Rapid Transit buses in Lagos will pay more from March 1, following the Lagos State Government’s approval of upward review in their fares.

Thousands of Lagos residents queue up daily to make use of the buses to enjoy lower fares and use the BRT to beat gridlock in the city due to their use of dedicated lanes.

The Lagos State Government said on Monday that it had approved fare increase ranging from 20 per cent to 50 per cent on different routes plied by the buses.

The Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, Mr Abiodun Dabiri, told newsmen in Alausa that the new fare structure for regulated bus operators in the state would take effect from March 1.

He said that though the government was mindful of the current financial difficulties residents were going through, it approved the fare increase to save the bus schemes from collapse.

Dabiri said what the bus operators spent on fuel had gone up 71 per cent, oil by 64 per cent and tyre by 90 per cent, threatening their continued operations.

He said, “In view of this and with government’s responsibility to avert a collapse of the franchise scheme, which currently serves over 500,000 commuters daily, government had to consider request by the operators for an upward review of bus fares.”

Dabiri said the current fares charged on some of the schemes had stayed constant for more than six years in the case of some operators.

He said that though the government granted the request for fare increase, it would not allow transport users to do so arbitrarily.

According to him, the operators have also been advised to improve their cost efficiency and effectiveness.

He said, “It will be difficult to pass the entire cost of operations to the consumers, bearing in mind that a lot of the users are in the low income bracket.”

He appealed to commuters to show understanding as the new fares take effect.

From March 1, commuters from Ikorodu to Mile 12 would pay N100 as against N75.

According to Dabiri, combining two zones like going from Ikorodu to Fadeyi will be N200 instead of N120, while combining three zones – Ikorodu to CMS – will be N300, instead of N200.

Giving a breakdown of the new fares on the LAGBUS routes, its Managing Director, Mr. Idowu Oguntona, said that the fare from CMS to Ajah would be N200, up from N150.

He said that commuters from Leventis to Eko Hotel would pay N100 instead of N70, while those going to CMS from Oshodi would pay N150 as against N100.

Oguntona said the new fare regime would affect the 61 routes of LAGBUS.

Car TalkCar Insurance: Facts You Need To Know by saints2(op): 5:06pm On Feb 13, 2017
Some people might think that car insurance in Nigeria is nothing but an unnecessary expense. In reality, however, it is an investment that is necessary, and that can yield significant benefits in the future. It will provide you with financial assistance that you need if you ever get into an accident or if you need to have repairs done for your car. It provides you with peace of mind from a financial perspective. It also provides legal protection, and it preserves the value of your vehicle as well.

Factors Affecting Insurance Rate

Different things will have an impact on the rate of car insurance in Nigeria. Your choice of a particular company, for instance, is one of the factors that will affect premiums. The particular model of your car and your driving history in the past are some of the things that can be instrumental in determining the premium that you have to pay. To get the best rate that is available, it is recommended that you shop around for free car insurance quotes and learn more about the prices that are being offered.

You Can Apply for Discounts

When it comes to car insurance in Nigeria, there are discounts that can be possibly applied. Talk to the insurance company and ask them about the possibilities. More often than not, you can ask for discounts if you have a clean driving record if your vehicle has anti-theft features and if you pay in full, among other things. The premium policies can vary from one insurer to another, which gives you a good reason to carefully compare the alternatives you will be presented with.

Learn about the Coverage You Need

The price that you have to pay for car insurance in Nigeria will be affected by the specific coverage that will be applied for. There is a minimum coverage that is required by law. On the other hand, there are also some coverages that are optional. They may make the price higher, but they can also provide you with peace of mind. Talk to a qualified insurance agent and get to know more about your needs.

Be Truthful

From the time that you are applying for car insurance in Nigeria to filing for claims, make sure to be truthful with everything that you have to declare. You might think that lying can help, but at the end of the day, it can only make things worse and can make you unqualified to enjoy the full perks of your insurance coverage.

Foreign AffairsBeing President Is Such A Massive Job”- Donald J Trump by saints2(op): 3:48pm On Feb 08, 2017
Donald Trump has said he was surprised at how big a job the presidency is.

The leader of the free world told Fox News interviewer Bill O’Reilly he works “long hours” and often gets only about four or five hours’ sleep a night.Mr. Trump said that at the start of his presidency he has been surprised by “the size, the magnitude of everything” and being president can be a “surreal experience in a certain way”.

He said: “The other day I walked into the main entrance of the White House and I said to myself, ‘This is sort of amazing.’ Or you walk into Air Force One, it’s like a surreal experience in a certain way, but you have to get over it because there’s so much work to be done.
He typically works until midnight or 1 am, then wakes up at 5 am to eat, read newspapers and check the television, he said.

The President is reported to routinely go through new clips about himself with his Press Secretary, Sean Spicer, outlining in marker pen the stories he doesn’t like.

And amid signs he began his presidency with the same chaotic operation that marked his campaign, a report has claimed he was not even aware he was elevating Steve Bannon to a senior security post when he signed one of the several executive orders.

Since Mr. Trump’s inauguration on 20 January, reports have emerged of a West Wing marked by confusion and unpreparedness—alongside intense turf battles being fought by his top officials.

EducationMerriam-webster Adds Photobomb, Town Hall To Dictionary by saints2(op): 7:04am On Feb 08, 2017
Merriam-Webster added more than 1,000 new words to its dictionary Tuesday, reacting to changes in pop culture and technology.

It’s the first time Merriam-Webster added words to its website listing since 2014, writing, “this is a significant addition to our online dictionary, reflecting the breadth of English vocabulary and the speed with which we seek information.”The dictionary staff explained the new additions:

Just as the English language constantly grows, so does the dictionary. More than one thousand new words have been added, including terms from recent advances in science, borrowings from foreign languages, and words from tech, medicine, pop culture, sports, and everything in between. This is a significant addition to our online dictionary, reflecting the breadth of English vocabulary and the speed with which we seek information. These new entries also highlight the old-fashioned skill of crafting useful and readable definitions that require the expertise and experience of our unique staff.

‘Seussian’ (“of, relating to, or suggestive of the works of Dr. Seuss”) is now in the dictionary, along with ‘conlang’ (“an invented language”), ‘face-palm’ (“to cover one’s face with the hand as an expression of embarrassment”), and ‘prosopagnosia’ (“an inability to recognize faces”).

The work of revision is ongoing and constant; even though it seems that the latest slang gets the most attention when dictionaries issue lists of new words, the additions come from the whole range of registers and from every corner of the language. These are words that have demonstrated frequent and increasing use in a variety of sources, and are therefore likely to be encountered by a reader—and should be in the dictionary. In some cases, terms have been observed for years and are finally being added; in others, the fast rise and broad acceptance of a term has made for a quicker journey.

For example, we now see that new tech terms are more about what we do with technology—how it is managed, deployed, and organized—than giving a name to the technology itself; hence terms such as net neutrality, abandonware, and botnet. Our devices, apps, and programs allow us to binge-watch, photobomb, and ghost someone.

Things we read online might be NSFW listicles; things we post online might be humblebrags. Some of these terms came into use in the past decade, and none are more than twenty years old.

From sports we get the verb airball as well as up-fake and five-hole.

From medicine: supercentenarian, EpiPen, and urgent care. And from other sciences we have CRISPR, phytoremediation, and microbiome. Prosopagnosia, sometimes called “face blindness,” is a neurological condition that has only relatively recently been the subject of study. The late neuroscientist Oliver Sacks, who suffered from the condition, wrote illuminatingly about its causes and effects. The term itself dates to 1950 and comes from the Greek words prósōpon (“face, mask, person”) and agnosia (“ignorance”).

New words from the ever-expanding vocabulary of cooking and food include arancini, EVOO, and macaron, as well as sharp tools of the kitchen santoku and chef’s knife. The adjective artisanal now has an expanded entry.

Political terms include town hall and truther as well as SCOTUS and FLOTUS.

Fun words for language lovers include conlang (a constructed language, like Elvish, Klingon, and Dothraki), Seussian, and snollygosters (“a shrewd, unprincipled person”), which has the unusual distinction of being a word returning to the dictionary. Snollygoster was dropped from our Collegiate dictionary in 2003 because it had fallen nearly completely from use; its frequent use by conservative pundit Bill O’Reilly sent people to the dictionary to find it over and over in recent years, and demonstrated that the word still has a place in the American lexicon. Its origins have a political context: it was used in the name-calling politics of 19th-century America.

Familiar words combine to give us metaphors or imagery like train wreck, side-eye, and weak sauce. As for verbs, we can ride shotgun, walk back an opinion, throw shade, face-palm, and geek out with new dictionary entries. Other new compound terms are much more serious, like food insecure.

All of these words have been observed, collected, and researched, with many examples in context used to write definitions that explain both basic meanings and specific usage. A recent sense of agnostic has been defined as “not preferring a particular device or system” and “designed to be compatible with different devices (such as computers or smartphones) or operating systems,” since “platform agnostic” can refer either to a user or a program. The verb boo-hoo adds the note “especially in mocking imitation of another’s tears, complaints, unhappiness, etc.” to the definition.

Take a look at these words and a sampling of other new entries, listed below. They represent a continuing record of our evolving language—and we’re already at work on the next batch. Yowza!

PoliticsBoko Haram Is Broke – UN by saints2(op): 6:38am On Feb 08, 2017
The destructive Boko Haram insurgency group is currently plagued by financial difficulties, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, has said.

Feltman stated this while briefing the Security Council on the UN Secretary-General’s Fourth Report on the threat the group poses to international peace and security efforts to “check and roll it back” on TuesdayThe UN envoy also noted that Boko Haram was under intense military pressure, but warned against undermining its capacity to launch fatal attacks.

“ISIL-affiliate Boko Haram is attempting to spread its influence and commit terrorist acts beyond Nigeria.

“And Boko Haram remains a serious threat, with several thousand fighters at its disposal.

“It is, however, plagued by financial difficulties and an internal power struggle, and has split in two factions,” Feltman said.

While the previous reports on the subject had focused on South East Asia, Yemen and East Africa, Libya and Afghanistan, the fourth report focused on Europe, North Africa and West Africa.

It noted that ISIL had conducted a range of attacks in Europe since declaring in 2014 its intent to target the region.

Some of these attacks were directed and facilitated by ISIL personnel, while others were enabled by ISIL providing guidance or assistance or were inspired through its propaganda, it said.

The report stated that while the military offensive in Libya had dislodged ISIL from its stronghold Sirte, the group’s threat to Libya and neighbouring countries persists.

“Its fighters, estimated to range from several hundred to 3,000, have moved to other parts of the country.

“ISIL has increased its presence in West Africa and the Maghreb, though the group does not control significant amounts of territory in the region.

“The reported pledge of loyalty to ISIL by a splinter faction of Al-Mourabitoun led by Lehbib Ould Ali may elevate the level of the threat.”

Following the increased military pressure, Feltman said ISIL is now on the defensive militarily in several regions, but was also adapting to military pressure by resorting to covert communications such as the ‘dark web’.

“Although its income and the territory under its control are shrinking, ISIL still appears to have sufficient funds to continue fighting,” he warned.

Feltman noted that ISIL relies mainly on income from extortion and hydrocarbon exploitation, even though resources from the latter are on the decline.

According to him, UN Member States are concerned that ISIL will try to expand other sources of income, such as kidnapping for ransom, and increase its reliance on donations.

“ISIL is adapting in several ways to military pressure, resorting to increasingly covert communication and recruitment methods, including by using the ‘dark web,’ encryption and messengers,” he warned.

The report also noted some of the measures taken by the Member States and the UN, stressing the need to develop sustained and coordinated responses to the grave threat posed by ISIL and associated groups and entities.

Feltman said that there were 19 universal counter-terrorism conventions and protocols, as well as related regional instruments on international terrorism, and relevant UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions.

“But we need to do more, as Member States continue to face significant challenges to ensure effective international cooperation,” he said.

He warned that foreign terrorist fighters leaving the conflict could pose a grave risk to their homeland or to the countries they are travelling to or transiting through, such as Iraq and Syria’s neighbours, as well as countries in the Maghreb.

“Ultimately, it is the spread and consolidation of peace, security, development and human rights that will most effectively deprive terrorism of the oxygen it needs to survive,” he concluded
