Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Thursday in Ibadan presented N207.67 billion as the 2017 Appropriation bill to the state House of Assembly.

The 2017 Appropriation bill, tagged “Budget of Self-Reliance”, is 19 per cent higher than the 2016 budget, which was N173.43 billion.

Ajimobi said that its structure reflected the priority government accorded the various sectors in terms of their anticipated developmental effects.

“Government will raise N59 billion (28.41 per cent) from Federation Account and N7.49 billion(3.60 per cent) from Transfers from Local Government JAAC, among others.

He said that the 2017 appropriation bill had a capital expenditure of N80.80billion and a recurrent expenditure of N126.87 billion.

Ajimobi said that the top priority of the state government would be on infrastructure, agriculture and its value-chain framework, education and health, while others would be given attention.

“In the 2017 appropriation bill, a total of N46.618 billion(57.7 per cent) was allocated to Economic Sector, N25.646 billion (31.74 percent) to Social Services Sector.

“A sum of N880 million (1.09 percent) was allocated to Law and Justice Sector, while N7.654 billion (9.47 per cent) was allocated to General Administration Sector,” he said.

The governor said that the aggregate percentage of 89.44 per cent of the appropriation, which was allocated to the economic and social sub-sector, underscored the government’s commitment to people-centered and empowerment-focused agenda.

Ajimobi said that the appropriation would be driven by IGR, which was expected to raise the highest receipts for budget implementation.

“In the cautious optimism of the state government, we are hopeful that the signals on ground are pointers to economic recovery in the 2017 fiscal year. At the national level, the oil price is appreciating globally.

“We have also embarked on the reorientation and refocusing the citizenry towards increased participation in agricultural activities and also initiated various programmes to ensure economic inclusiveness,” he said.

The governor said that government had strived to enhance the revenue base of the state by expanding the tax net, blocking all financial loopholes, redirecting and refocusing governance within the government ministries and agencies .

The Speaker, Mr Michael Adeyemo, said that the proposal could aptly be termed a budget of hope.

He said that the increment in the 2017 bill from that of 2016 signified that year 2017 would be a promising and fulfilling one for the state.

Adeyemo said it also showed the genuine commitment of the present administration to the development of the socio-economic life of its citizenry.

“The house will intensify efforts for effective service delivery in 2017. We implore the executive arm to give deserved considerations to our resolutions and such will enhance legislative-executive relationship,” he said.

He called for an urgent review of rates and taxes collectables in accordance with the present circumstances.

An accident happened yesterday at Obalende bridge at around 9pm. The reason of the accident was not known but it was gathered that a commercial bus caught fire at the bridge, though no lives were reported lost, but we gathered that 2 people got injured and that the bus got burnt beyond repair. President Muhammadu Buhari Wednesday assured that as the Chairman of ECOWAS Contact Group on Guinea Bissau, he will do his best to ensure that the country does not relapse into crisis.

Receiving the Prime Minister of Guinea Bissau, Umar El-Mukhtar Sissoco-Embola, at the State House, the President expressed satisfaction on the gradual return of normalcy to the West African country.

Assuring the visiting Prime Minister of Nigeria’s continued support to political stability in Guinea Bissau, President Buhari urged the leaders to work hard to reach a lasting solution to the political crisis in the country.

The President congratulated the new Prime Minister on his appointment and urged him to put the interest of the country and its people ahead of everything else.

In his remarks, Sissoco-Embola described President Buhari as his role model, adding that his country will continue to thank the government and people of Nigeria for standing by them in their moment of crisis.

He also pledged his country’s commitment to improved ties with Nigeria.

The Nigeria Police Force on Monday said the special security outfit tagged “Operation Harmony” would be launched to restore lasting peace in Southern Kaduna State.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operation) DIG Habila Joshak, said this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna.Joshak said the police was constrained to react to publications by some print media regarding killings in Southern Kaduna in which purported number of persons were said to have been killed.

He said: “In as much as the Force acknowledged the fact that there were few isolated cases of attacks recently in some settlements,

“However, the figures reflected in the publications do not represent the facts on ground and therefore enjoin the print media to always verify their information in order to avoid decimation of information that are not accurate and likely to mislead members of the public.

“The Force therefore wishes to reassure members of the public especially people of Southern Kaduna that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim K. Idris in his resolve to restore peace in all parts of the country and particularly southern Kaduna which has witnessed crisis in recent times.’’

He explained the newly deployed special task force comprised officers and men of proven integrity that were trained to respond decisively to any situation likely to threaten peaceful coexistence of the citizens.

“In view of the importance attached to this operation, the leadership of the Police Mobile Force has been relocated to Kafanchan to oversee the operations whose personnel were largely drawn from the Police Mobile Force.

“The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Operations is directly coordinating this assignment in Kafanchan.’’

The Force therefore wishes to reassure members of the public that adequate security measures have been emplaced to respond at short notice of any attempt by misguided elements or trouble makers to disrupt the peace of the area.

In the same vein, the Force also advised citizens to remain law abiding and go about their lawful businesses as their safety was guaranteed.

However, he warned that the force would not fold its arms and watch any person or group of persons undermine the law of the land and would therefore deal decisively with any such groups in accordance with the law.

He further urged members of the public to therefore report any suspicious movements or activities that are likely to temper with the peaceful atmosphere to the police and other security agencies.

Jason Miller, President-elect Donald Trump’s spokesman says he will not take the job of White House Communications Director he was nominated for on Thursday.

Miller announced in a statement that he would not continue on to the White House, citing family reasons.According to him, I will hand off my responsibilities as Communications Director to Sean Spicer, the Republican National Committee Communications Director.

Spicer was announced this week alongside Miller as the incoming White House press secretary, a position he would also retain.

“After spending this past week with my family, the most amount of time I have been able to spend with them since March 2015, it is clear they need to be my top priority right now.

“And this is not the right time to start a new job as demanding as White House Communications Director,” he said.

He added that he was also expecting the birth of his second daughter in January 2017.

According to him, however, he looks forward to continue to work with incoming President Trump.

“I look forward to continuing to support the President-elect from the outside after my work on the Transition concludes,” Miller said.

Miller joined the Trump campaign in June as Senior Communications Adviser.

He previously worked for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign.

Trump had named Spicer Assistant to the President and Press Secretary, Hope Hicks Assistant to the President and Director of Strategic Communications, Miller Assistant to the President and Director of Communications, and Dan Scavino Assistant to the President and Director of Social Media.

“Sean, Hope, Jason and Dan have been key members of my team during the campaign and transition.

“I am excited they will be leading the team that will communicate my agenda that will Make America Great Again,” Trump announced in a statement on Thursday.
