Jethro,

You need to learn, in the 21st century and access to internet you should not be thinking like the way we were thinking years back.

If you have a farm and cows are likely to be a problem, simply fence it off with barbed wire. All it takes is a few strands of barbed wire fencing and the cows will leave your farm alone.

You can even go further and install solar powered electric fence on the perimeter of the farm, both abok.i and his cows will avoid your farm like a plague.

your socialist suggestion of creating grazing land for uneducated fulani cattle herders does not hold water, if they want grass they should plant grass by themselves or buy grass to feed their cows, afterall they sell the cows at the end of the day.

communal grazing lands will be overgrassed, poorly looked after and will be conter productive on the long run.

To solve your problem, install barbed wire fence and encourage others to install barbed wire fences on their farms.
Install barbed wires for 10/20 acres? A real joke. Look. In our cashew farm, we placed several sign post with inscription "ba shiga sayin", i think that mean no entry for cows. Still they would enter, eat the cashew nuts and make an abode in the farm. Barbed wires are temporary measure where your farm is small and you live close7
Please, the points Jethro has raised are congent and She needs not be insulted or looked down on. State your opinion and views please.

I remember. @world1. Seems you have the solution to this menace. I thought i read it somewhere your foul proof solution to cattle feeding on farmland. Kindly share Pleaseee.

If I were a big time farmer, I will just buy a gun. If Ur cattle graze on my farm, I will first shoot the herdsmen and then shoot 3 or 4 cows dead. D remaining will have to take off.
Btw, why can't we in d south SS,SE, SW generate our own meat without relying on Hausa cattle?
Let them trade dia cattle only in d north. We don't want to see d cows anywia in our land. We will place a ban on consuming beef.
Two wrongs dont make a right. By shooting his cattle, you have just disturbed his right to property. I know the fulani herdmen can be difficult sometimes but the law is always there to protect everyone. If he has damaged your farm crops, Be gentle, be calm. Get 1 or 2 persons to join you catch like 1 big one or 2 not very small ones of his cows. Report the damage at the nearest police station. The cows you caught will be taken down as evidence and I can assure you that you will claim your full damages.

Cassava is the most grown crop in my town. But Im never interested in it because while growing up I had a raw deal with cattle rearers. Anytime my old man plants cassava we never get to harvest it. Either they are eaten up by cows while at the tender stage or when its nearing maturity. That only piss me off cassava. Even if you dermacate your farm boundary with bamboo or barbed wires. 20-30 acres Im talking about here.

@all. Let me share the benefits of those guys with you. If you make "real" friends with them

1. They will not eat up your "whole" farmland anymore.
2. They can be bringing you free fura plus nunu.
3. There feaces will make good manure for your farm for tomatoes, cucumber and watermelon. You know that anywhere they just left after residing there for long is hot cake for farmers.
4. You too can own a herd of cattle by buying females and males of N40,000 worth for keep with them. You can terminate the contract at
your will and pay them a token. This part has its dos and donts

So, I'll suggest a change of attitudes towards them.

Nigeria is an indivisible Country. We all can co- habit harmoniously. Needless to say that Our president- Elect has more pressing matters to attend to than "mere impatience on the part of the farmers and herdsmen".

He says he is a graduate of federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. But Im thinking otherwise. There is a job opening in the swinnery. Is this Op employable?

Another batch of harvest ready for the market again tonight! 50 bags this time. I'll keep you guys posted. We're advised to go through a member of the vegetable and fruits grower association from our area.
The target this time is to take advantage of the brief election holiday so that before the shipments from the North start arriving, we can make brisk money at a fairly higher price.

@all.

I've got something on my mind today. Its giving me concern alot. Its marketing our farm produce. Imagine after the stress one goes through in dry season farming with irrigation and your cucumber gets to Mile 12, Lagos and it can only command N2500 per bag as at 3 days ago.

Here are my questions:
1. I thought the price goes really up between february and april. So what happened at this time?
2. When is the peak of harvest of dry season cucumber and water melon from the north?
3. When is it that the supply from the north is lowest in our south west markets?

Is it that we in the south west do not have comparative advantage of producing the curcumbits?

Lets reason the timing of dry season planting and harvesting in the north together with the view of determining when best our product will command high value. I mean when the northerners' curcumbits will be fewer in the market.
