SportsLife Lessons From Mayweather’s Victory by samdson(op): 8:36am On Aug 28, 2017
1. Risk Must Be Calculated
For the overtly enthusiastic like me that followed most of the buildup leading up to the main event at Las Vegas, one thing was clear; the preparations in both Floyd and Conor’s camps were surreal. From a series of strenuous exercises in a specialized hydrotherapy pool to thorough paces at the gym, Conor McGregor was giving nothing away. However, for Floyd Mayweather and his Money team, they had their jobs well cut out. Mayweather was coming out of retirement at age 40 to risk his 49-match unbeaten record. Signing off to this duel was putting his place at the Hall of Fame at risk. However, it was a calculated one. The decision to pick up his gloves after about two years of inactivity was made easier by the choice of the opponent. McGregor was never a boxer. He is a martial artist at best. And while the outlier nature of the opponent must have been a risk in itself, Mayweather has been long enough in this business to know that it was a risk that was worth it. Aftercall, it will be a jubilee of unbroken successes. In life and in business, while it is great not be too risk averse, wisdom is imperative. Risks must be weighed, measured and calculated.

2. Pace Yourself
For the first three rounds of the match at least, it appeared as though McGregor was tearing apart the pundit books and shattering the earnings of the Casino lords. The Irish man was boxing Mayweather to a corner, with jabs that left the Money man far from comfortable. His tactics was simply to make him cower under the intense start. However, what McGregor didn’t realize is that this was a 12-round marathon. Boxing is not martial art where you can steal the show after 15 to 20 minutes. It was a marathon. McGregor had burn out in the latter stages where he needed his strength. Such is life; it is a marathon. You need to pace yourself. No one finds gold overnight or stumble upon an ‘Eureka’ moment in a flash. Life is a journey and must be lived one day at a time. McGregor was football’s equivalent of a happy kid with a PlayStation joystick. He was far too excited and the occasion got to him. While Mayweather saved his energy for the moments that matter, McGregor had lost his legs and tenacity by round eight. Life is a marathon, pace yourself and allow yourself time to grow into the race.

3. Cut off The Distractions
In-between you and point B, will be the ‘little foxes’ called distractions. The build up to the boxing event was dominated by all the pomp and pageantry there was in this world. Again, this shouldn’t irk anyone, as this was part of the business in staging this match. However, there is a sense that McGregor might have taken the glitz and fluff too far in his own preparations. The UFC Lightweight Champion stole the show in the days before this event. Some of his preparations were simply for the cameras and a handful of his press conferences leading up to Saturday’s fight had been rife with tension, bypassing entertainment for cringe-worthines. He had used racial slants, invited unwarranted guests into his UFC Performance Institute training center. The reality is that in life there will be side attractions to distract you away from the main event. While indulgences are a key part of life, moderation is key. At some point in the bout, McGregor was taunting and hurling words at Mayweather. What he failed to realize is that as soon as the main event kicked in, focus on the goal was everything. Mayweather has seen too much to be swayed by dirty talk. Call it exuberance, and you won’t be wrong. 29-year-old Conor McGregor didn’t know when to cut out the noises and distractions. This is a key life lesson.

4. Family Support System
One of a key member of the Money team was a certain Mr. Floyd Mayweather Senior, Mayweather’s father. Mayweather Snr played an integral role in the development of his son to boxing stardom - teaching him the art of the sport at a very fine age. A preacher of defence - his influence has helped Mayweather Jnr become the tough opponent he is. Though the duo had had their fair share of family animosity and showdown, Floyd Senior had remained Mayweather’s biggest fan and greatest support. When the night club lights are out, when the razzmatazz of Las Vegas life retreats for some sanity and the ShowTime blitz are over, one of the greatest mainstay of Mayweather will remain his father. For everything your friends mean to you, few will take the place of family. There is a reason why the most expensive footballer on planet earth (Neymar) has his father as agent. It has to also count for something that the greatest sisters in Tennis history were and are still being tutored by their father. For all the successes you will ever attain in life, family is a key support system you will always require. There was a moment in the third round of the bout in Las Vegas when McGregor was seemingly picking out Mayweather, during the interval, it was Floyd Snr that was in the face of Mayweather, psyching him up and playing a cheerleader role. There are moments in your life when the encouraging words of family is greater than the voices of the John Maxwells, Robert Kiyosakis and the likes.

You are the one who needs to read more.
When you say Shell 'business', you would mean nothing but Upstream, Downstream, Project & Technology, and Global Function. That isn't what tells which is Int'l or local.
There is no such thing as Shell Local and Shell International. Nothing further

Shell as an entity is grouped into two organizational units:
Shell Americas ( Canada, Brazil and U.S.)....and...
Shell International, covering the rest of the world with major interests in Europe, Asia/Middle East/Russia, Australia/Oceania and Africa.
I am afraid this is incorrect too. To keep it high level, Shell as a business entity is divided into four...UI, UA, DS, IG...You can easily read up more on this on the Shell website. It's important not to distort the facts

For the record, Shell Nigeria's staff are international staff! So, it is wrong to say international HR(whatever that means) passes an applicant to local HR(Nigerian HR)
Absolutely affirm that. I will advise in matters such as this, we only say what we are definite of.

@ Pendrotech and Omaobe, Please accept my congratulations for making it to the SRD.
This is the much I can tell you without compromising the integrity of the recruitment process:

1. Ensure that you acknowledge the receipt of the invitation and inform them if you can make it or not. Shell is one of the most organised companies and they will need this info. to prepare for your SRD.
2. The dress code is formal Business dress code. so a good conservative color suit should suffice, even though shell says they do not asses dressing.
3. Plan to be at the venue of the SRD in good time. if you can find an accommodation close to the venue, that will be the best for you.
4. There is no specific academic way to prepare for the SRD so don't listen to people telling you that they have past questions and stuff, all na lie.
5. The recruiters(at least from my experience) are nice, helpful but very professional. They sabi their work wella), so the most important thing is to be yourself, don't try to form guru or try to impress anybody, they can see through your mask.
6. on the first day, you will have a non- assessed session where you will have the opportunity to meet recent shell grads, that is employees of not more that three years or so. you will get the chance to ask them anything you want to ask them about shell, working condition and all but please professional don't ask questions you should not ask... find out what that is. of course shell dey provide coorrect grub but don't get carried away, you are on business.
7. The recruitment process is tough, educating, enlightening, and demanding so you have to try to be at the top of your game.
8. The world process is centred round CAR. you should understand that by now!
9. Practice your e-tray from the link in the briefing pack.
10. I don't know if you are tech or commercial but there will definitely be a group exercise where you will be put together and given a task to work on as a group. Be yourself, respect other people, speak up if you have something to say, you must speak up because unless you talk there will be nothing to assess you on. BUT don't talk for talking sake, no gra-gra, sabi-sabi.... I recommend you watch my favorite reality show (NO BE STUPID, BIG BROTHER DUMB SHIT), watch Donald Trump's THE APPRENTICE, seriously.
11. there will be an intervie like the one you had on the phone interview, so prepare to demonstrate your CAR
12. I DON'T CARE IF SHELL GIVES ME A JOB OR NOT (I KNOW I DESERVE IT AND WILL DEFINITELY ADD VALUE TO SHELL, IF EMPLOYED) BUT I WANT TO SAY WITHOUT FEAR OF CONTRADICTION THAT THEIR RECRUITMENT PROCESS IS WORLD CLASS AND THE VERY BEST SO FAR I HAVE SEEN. SO DON'T GO THERE FLAUNTING YOUR FIRST CLASS, HALF CLASS AND STUFF....NO ...NO...NO... SHELL LOOKS OUT FOR YOUR "EDUCATION" AND NEVER YOUR "QUALIFICATION". As long as you are at the SRD, it doesn't matter which school you attended. I was the only one in my SRD without an Overseas degree but (to the glory of God, NA YOLA I GO SCHOOL FOR NORTH, AM FROM THE NORTH TOO) I know I have a world class education and was among the ones God favored with success at the SRD.
13. You will be given a background document on the first day which you are required to study over the night. The whole SRD processes, Case studies, group exercise, will be based on that background.
14. Be prepared to learn from the experience because it is great and you can't find it in any Nigerian recruitment institution. No god father here just YOU AND YOURSELF.
15. FINALLY BELIEVE THAT GOD IS IN PERFECT CONTROL OF ALL THE HAPPENINGS IN THE UNIVERSE AND BE PATIENT AFTER THE SRD COS even if you succeed you may not get the JOB immediately or even eventually(I learnt this from some people, don't know if true or false)

16.Shell recruitment process will surely introduce YOU to YOU!!!
17. keep a link and make friends from the SRD who knows if God just wanted you to meet someone there and not a job at shell?

18.. I will be praying for you ALL and if you have any questions PM your boy, I still remain loyal(Don't ask me specific questions or past questions and such nonesense)

19. change your usernames to: omaobe@shell.com and pendrotech@shell.com because you will definitely be my colleagues in SHELL....

20. PRAY... PRAY.... PRAY....

peace and luv
Nothing further!

Whats the probability of recruiting everybody on the waiting list? I mean successful candidates?
In truth, there is nothing like waiting list, and applications are handled and treated individually. Ultimately, offer is driven by business needs and adequate opening. The thing is as long as you have not gotten a regret, there is every need to be hopeful. Cheers...

Emmaus12: All new joiners will be by december....by then the rightsizing of the remaining 75% must have been completed.
I think it will be right to say what you factually know. The above is not correct, and the bit around 75% is equally misleading. Irrespective of the divestment, Shell will contact successful candidates in due course

Very brilliant stuff from xfire... I absolutely agree with all your points. While a Masters degree is a nice-to-have, it is not a must-to-have for a fresh grad. A sublime grade, fantastic communication skills and a measure of God's grace is all that is imperative

bigfrancis21: Hello Members,

I applied for the Shell graduate trainee job around early November. I was sent emails for the online assessment tests which I took and passed.

This morning, a shell staff member called me from US inviting me for a phone interview scheduled to hold next monday for approximately 1 hour. My interview confirmation email was sent immediately after.

@Sam, and others that went through the phone interview process, what was it like? What were the questions asked? I've done some research online but would love to hear from the horse's mouth straight.

Thank you very much.
Congrats Francis. It's the right step in the right direction. Kindly send me a pm stating the position u applied for, so I can advice you accordingly. Cheers...

Well, texasbreed was spot on. I have no MSc. In all truism, it is not a yardstick. If memory serves me right, I was the about the only one without an MSc or MBA in my SRD. Great if you have them, but for Shell, it's a case of what you bring to the table.
Jobs/VacanciesRe: 2013 Shell Recruitment Day Application For Fresh Graduates by samdson: 5:46pm On Dec 14, 2013
Let me start by saying that God is indeed faithful. His timing might not follow our expectations, but HE is always right on time.

I applied for the 2013 Shell Recruitment in May, and after daunting months of Application under review, I had my phone interview in October.
My SRD was in early November. As I write this, I have just been given my offer letter.

For the records, let me say that Shell's recruitment process still has a high level of merit about it. Meritocracy is never being compromised by nepotism or 'the Nigerian factor.' Shell truly gives everyone a level playing field to show what they are made of. I say this without mincing words because I am a living testimony.

I hope my testimony inspires someone. And please, never give in at any point in your job search. It is difficult to deny the man whose determination is unflinching.

Cheers.

dexter004: I can categorically tell you that som folks have resumed. Both in Lag&Ph-bout 30-40. Resumption was for most, September/October. Now my opinion: It is then POSSIBLE that those already in the recruitment process who their status is NOT unsuccessfull after Dec'13 endin, will be contacted. Don't hope for anything in this yr from Shell Nigeria anymo' till next yr[Feb/Mar]- Fact. And all this is still not puttin into perspective the current widely published issues between IOCs & FGN. Enjoy the festive period, cheers.
Maybe you are not entirely right. I know folks that are having their medicals this week
