He was not thanking his pastor, he was thanking the God of his pastor. Read the story very well. What he was simply saying, was dat his pastor's prayer were not in vain on him including his parents prayers.

Because if he had died in the accident, pepu wud mention his church and his parents.
They wud say his parents were prayerful o and they were christains how did it happen ??
They wud also mention his pastor and ask what how did it happen, did his pastor not see the accident ?
so he truely knew what he was saying.
