@AKT

Hope your child is improving.
The healing will be fast.

As for Big Treat, I was advised they have no plan at the moment to do a public offer. I guess the money from the PP is enough to revamp and expand for now.

My interest in their shares was borne of a desire to be part of a food sector player at take off.
I see Big Treat as another Mr Biggs or Tantalizer - both top money spinners, plus the bread etc.

Longtermers should get it, if possible. The liquidity will come when the certificates are processed and the price is high enough for a "strike" between supply and demand.

Happy hunting.

Don't think the Big Treat phenomenon is a "Pump and Dump".

Even though the volumes are low, it has closed on a very high bid of 9.3 million today. Think it was more than 16 million recently.

I participated in the private placement and tried to buy more shortly after listing - in vain.

I know your question is to Fof2 but this may help you.

The idea of cycle in cycle out is to buy a stock while it is low sell when it rises, buy again when it drops to sell upon rise.

So you need to buy sound stock you believe will rise or think some rumour etc will cause a not fundamentally sound stock to rise.

You may buy more of the sound stocks you have that have fallen, that is averaging down your cost but this not part of the cycle in cycle out philosophy. You will be buying to await appreciation because you believe the stock is a good hold stock.

Happy hunting.

The will of the people is the will of God.
Tobechukwu is healed by the love flowing from all Nairalanders.

@Guk

A managed portfolio means that your brokers buy and sell shares on your behalf with your money at their discretion. You pay them a management fee which is agreed beforehand and may be a percentage of your portfolio;

An advisory account is when your broker advises you on which stocks to buy or sell for an agreed fee;

An execution only account is what most of us on Nairaland practise. For a buy or sell commission the broker merely carries out your orders and, finally,

A day trader is trader in shares who buys or sells usually on momentum. He or she may cycle in and cycle out of a stock on the same day, indeed several times of the same stock on the same day. Don't think it is possible on the NSE right now. Very common in America where it is possible to deal from your computer at home. Very, very risky!!

I get your point about Acorn.
Just thinking there may be something we are missing.
Your advice is well taken and gives pause for thought.
Some of these boards do affect the companies - in curtailing bad behaviour. For example I have it on good authority that IGI was not going to go public at some point after the success of the PP but with the sort of people on the board it would have been very difficult to let the public down in that way.
Have no intention of making substantive investment in Acorn unless I find out something that is not generally known.
Thanks.

Thanks for the autopsy report on Acorn.
Some of the directors on the board are very reputable. I doubt very much they will knowingly overstate their projections.
If I am solvent enough by close I will risk a small investment in the PO. Meanwhile will fish for more info.

@Nairalanders
IGI to list by end of first quarter of 2008. It is official. Likely to do a bonus issue soon, not certain if before or after listing. Hallelujah!

@ the guy that asked

IPO is initial public offer. It means a private company is offering shares to the general public for the first time. It usually following a listing on thestock exchange by introduction but may be before it is listed.

PO is public offer. It means a company already on the stock exchange is offering additional shares to the public. It is usually at a discount to the current price to entice investors.

PP is private placement. This means a company, which may be private or public is inviting chosen investors to buy a tranche of shares. Although described as by invitation it is often quite public. if it is a very desirable stock it tends to be more private and the directors may sell to who they choose.

@Deoba

Feel your pain about PO.
The key is how many shares you wish to buy. High volumes warrant numerous applications through family, trusted friends and companies.
Even better if you can somehow get preferential allotment!
So far, all POs show significant capital appreciation and less risky than playing the secondary market.

@Nairalanders

What's the take on Acorn pp?
I have some link to the owners but don't intend to invest enough to warrant trying to use my contact.
I was a part owner of a similar company which collapsed for various management reasons and inability to get products with the collapse of Nigerian refineries.
Concerned with the small margin of the business and all the brouhaha with any attempt to deregulate the downstream petroleum market.

The choices are limited for good growth.
Presumably you want to cover your interest charge by the end of 12 months i.e about 6 months left.
My first choices will be Diamond bank or First bank(much as it hurts me) then Wapco, if you can get it now while it is in the low 70's.

Transcorp still having infighting, which is the main cause of the tribulations rather than anything inherently wrong with the company.

The ultimatum given by NCC should bring things to a head soon, hopefully for the best.

I suspect Vodacom will come in to run Nitel.

Those who already own shares hang in there but with a little shaking, like myself.

@ My peace

Your interpretation is opposite to the exact.

"Oversold" means that the stock has been sold too much. In other words, you should now be buying the stock as the stock is now cheaper than it should be.

Similarly "overbought" means too many people have been buying the stock forcing the price higher than it should be worth. It means the stock should now be sold.

Hope clear?

Looks like nobody interested in Transcorp anymore.

The registrars are Afribank.
They have recently moved from the island to lagos Mainland.
Google them for phone number.

Recent news that Nitel will not be leasing out the exchanges seems like another bad news from an incompetent organisation but I think it is actually good news. It means they don't have to lease them out as a solution has been found for the capital injection.

Don't sell unless you're desperate for the cash.

If IGI does an IPO, the listing price will almost invariably be substantially higher than the PP price.
This practice is not unique to Transcorp, as many would have us believe.
Even when the shares are listed by introduction to the exchange the price almost always rises rapidly due to scarcity until the PO.

@Blueband, AKT & all Nairalanders

Apparently, official statement by one Hafez Bakare on Monday confirms 1st Bank will pay 5% annualised interest i.e about 2.5% of the money returned - working on 6 months.

As for the application at 2 branches, I assume you did not use the same name of both of them!
It is not possible that you get a refund from the smaller application and not from the bigger. I suspect the batch that includes your second branch is just not ready yet.
Authorise your agent to go to 1st Registrars at Abebe Village Road, Iganmu, Lagos and ask.
I don't suspect foul play although my patience with the Bank has been sorely tested by this debacle.

Let's hope the interest comes through - Sharpish, as we say in the British Army.

If 1st bank cares about goodwill they will return some interest, even 5%.

They are saying that it is the issuing house that kept the money, not them. Likely story, as we used to say.

I applied only for rights and additional rights and got just about 4% despite the rights been only 140% subscribed. My loyalty has been sorely tested.

Do you guys know that the 1st bank staff received 1% brokerage for all application that went through them. MY PERSON had audacity to say she was doing me a favour in helping to retrieve my returned money. Got it myself now without telling her.

Happy 2008!
There have been speculations that IGI will feel compelled to go public especially now the frozen money has been returned and the mere fact that PO is such a tempting and painfree way to get money, for now.
I certainly hope they go public. I want to realise some of my money tied down there.

Your account officer sounds very arrogant.

What's the deal with these bankers and stockbrokers in Nigeria?

You were right to specify the purchase price. You should also specify the valid period for your orders.

You are under no obligation to accept any partial purchase if they have failed to tell you when you asked if they have bought any!

It is always a good idea to have more than one broker, although it may require closer attention to your accounts to avoid confusion.

It may be helpful to buy different companies with the separate brokers.

Merry Christmas fellow Nairalanders!
I have very urgent question about Costain Rights Issue. I have not received an invitation for the Rights Issue and the deadline is fast approaching. I am scared I might not receive the form on time and I’m beginning to think that Costain popeopleay have intended it that way. Please fellow Nairalanders what should I do to obtain the form? The Holiday season is at hand and almost impossible to contact Costain and I am outside Nigeria. I was very unlucky to have bought the stock at high of 20 naira and looking for ways to narrow down my losses.
Some kind NSM member had uploaded the blank Rights Offer form but upon filling the form I noticed that it should have been addressed to a particular share holder stating number of shares offered.
Question:
Is it possible for me to use this form (not addressed to me). I know the offer is for 13 shares for every 4 share already acquired. So, I know my total rights offer.

GURUS in the house and students, please help this desperate brother.
Best wishes for the Christmas and Happy New year. May our pockets never run empty! Nairalandars una too much!
@Hardmoney
I am in the same position.

Authorised my brokers to collect my rights circular but was told to wait for the circular to arrive before trying to get copy if it does not arrive.

My suggestion is to fill in the blank circular that you have but be sure to write your correct account number with the registrar and your name exactly as it is on the certificate.

Can you please paste a link to the source of the blank rights circular so that others like me can get these.

I will buy both Costain and AIICO offers.
The problem will be oversubscription.
I am sure both are very good buys at the prices.
There is also another dimension to Costain that I am not privileged to but the word is to buy.

Just got word from my brokers:

If the name of your brokers is enterred, use the numeric CSCS otherwise use the alphanumeric number.

I take this to simply be you can use the alphanumeric all the time.

Yes.
It is a new thing.
Some PO forms now include your bank details space so they can electronically pay your dividends to your account.
Similar to crediting your CSCS account with your bonuses etc.

@Dollyp1cute

I am sure someone answered you before- Oore on this page.

I assume you are not entitled to e-dividend which will be credited to your account directly.

You will need to contact the registrars to the companies to ascertain that the dividends have been paid and to what address they were sent.
If they have been sent you will then have to wait 6 months before they can be re-issued, if not received!

It is best to give them a bank mandate to credit your account directly with dividends.
You may be reluctant to do this but it is better unless you go to Nigeria frequently and can ask them to keep your dividends for personal collection.

Hope useful.

I can feel your pain.

Without knowing the details, it is difficult to advise you.

If the sums involved are very large, you may have no choice but to take legal action.

In general, I will advise to stir clear of lawyers in these matters. Like stockbrokers win or lose they get their money.

If you must sue, ensure that you iron out the payments with the lawyer before hiring him or her. If possible get one that will agree to a percentage of money recovered after all expenses.

Be sure that you have total control over the pace of the suit and are able to call a halt to it at anytime of your choosing.

Goodluck.

What you were saying reminds me of my time in Montreal.

I used to escape every Christmas at about this time to London, England.
The view of the snow piled high on the roadsides as I took the coach from downtown to the airport really made me feel like an escaped convict!!
But the snow-covered landscape does look very beautiful.

I believe similar experiments have been done with chimps with the same outcome.

I am basically a buy and hold investor in some stocks but willing to divest when I get sound information - not insider information(illegal).
There are stocks that I consider very risky and will tend to trade in and get out when I suspect the party is over. I don't mean "concert party" which is also illegal.

I don't think the experimental finding holds with a relatively underdeveloped market such as the NSE. Where a lot of the movement is still quite predictable. Also with all the preferential allocations in public offers, the NSE cannot be said to be open and fair.

Think about these.
