address the issue of Boko Haram insurgency to ensure security in the country Buhari stated this on Saturday at the township square, Lafia, during his campaign rally in the Nassarawa state capital. “The fundamental challenges facing this country now are insecurity and the problem of economy– which are worsened by corruption. l pledge to tackle insecurity in the North-East caused by the Boko Haram sect. “I assure you that we are going to finally assemble a competent team of Nigerians to efficiently manage the country. I am appealing to you; the damage done to this country is great. “The level of unemployment, level of insecurity is intolerable. The journey has begun. It will take time, it will take patience, it will take support from you to make sure that we succeed. “My administration will be poised to serve the people of this country judiciously, through improved healthcare delivery system, and quality education, to enable the citizens enjoy the dividends of democracy,’’ Buhari said. He said that his administration would provide good roads and other infrastructure. The APC presidential candidate, who noted that Nigeria was endowed with natural solid minerals, said his administration would articulate a plan to reposition the country’s mineral sector, which would enhance mining activities in the Nassarawa state. He said that mineral exploration was “a veritable tool for economic transformation” as it would create employment opportunities and diversify the means of income for the state, so that it would not be waiting for revenue from oil to develop. According to him, if given the mandate, his administration will also place high premium on the execution of developmental programmes to enhance the well-being of the populace. While advising other candidates not to see the race as a do-or-die affair, he said, “I have no reason to see the presidential ambition as a war, because I am not fighting for myself but the interest of the people of this country”. In his remarks, Buhari’s running mate, Prof Yemi Osibanjo, urged Nigerians to vote for the party’s presidential candidate as well as its gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Umaru Al-makura. Osinbajo also appealed to them to protect their votes. (NAN) http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/buhari-promises-tackle-boko-haram-elected/ |

Tens of thousands of people rallied in the capital of Chad on Saturday in support of the authorities’ decision to send troops to fight Nigeria’s Boko Haram Islamists. Cameroon’s President Paul Biya had announced Thursday that his Chadian counterpart Idriss Deby had agreed to send “a substantial contingent” of troops to help Cameroonian armed forces, who have faced repeated attacks from Boko Haram. http://www.punchng.com/news/68-million-voters-registered-for-2015-elections-inec/ A total number of 68,833,476 voters registered for the February general elections. Also, over four million Nigerians were involved in multiple registrations across the country and their names have been successfully by the Independent National Electoral Commission. Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, stated this at the meeting the commission had with the national leadership of all the 23 registered political parties in Abuja on Tuesday evening. Jega said, “In line with the provisions of the law, the commission has just announced the publications of the register of voters that will be used for the February 2015 general elections. “The total number of voters registered for the elections is 68,833,476.” Jega said over four million Nigerians were involved in double registration and that because of this, their names had been deleted from the register. He said 38,774,391 Nigerians had collected their Permanent Voter Cards out of the 54,341,610 that were ready as of Monday last week. He, however, said the commission had ordered more PVCs and that some of them were already waiting for collection. Jega said, “The commission has taken delivery of additional PVCs from the contractor, and we are positive that we will have all outstanding cards with us by 28 January, 2015. “For the avoidance of doubt, possession of PVCs is a strict condition for anyone intending to vote in the 2015 elections.” Asked about the resolutions passed by the House of Representatives, asking the commission to use TVCs, he said he was not aware of such resolution. He nevertheless said the commission was working with the intent of using only PVCs for the elections. Jega regretted that many Nigerians refused to collect their PVCs, adding that in order to address this, the commission had directed all resident electoral commissioners to further decentralise the distribution of the cards to the ward level. The time for the distribution, he added, had also been fixed from 8.30am to 5.30pm, from Monday to Saturday. He said contrary to the doubt being entertained in some quarters, the electoral umpire would use card readers for the elections. Jega added, “INEC will use card readers for the elections. Th commission has taken delivery of more than 130,000 units of these card readers, and we are on schedule to receive the remaining quantity before the end of January.” He announced that deployment of the cards to states had commended. He said there were about 150,000 polling points in the country. |

Kano - Yanaye Grema hid for three days between a wall and his neighbours' house, as Boko Haram fighters ransacked his hometown of Baga on the shore of Lake Chad. The 38-year-old fisherman already knew the attack was serious: he joined civilian vigilantes to defend the town but their simple weapons were no match for the Islamists' superior firepower. "People fled into the bush while some shut themselves indoors," he said of last Saturday's attack. "The gunmen pursued fleeing residents into the bush, shooting them dead," he told AFP from Maiduguri. But it was only after breaking cover on Tuesday night that he realised the true scale of the attack, which it is feared may be one of the worst in the six-year insurgency. "For five kilometres, I kept stepping on dead bodies until I reached Malam Karanti village, which was also deserted and burnt," he said. Local officials this week said the attack forced at least 20 000 people from Baga and other settlements in and around Lake Chad to flee, many of them across the border. Nearly 600 others had been stranded on an island on the lake without food, water or shelter. Looting and burning The attack wasn't the first on Baga. Nearly 200 people were killed in April 2013, when militants stormed the town and set much of it on fire, prompting fierce fighting with the Nigerian military. This time, the Islamists met less resistance and were able to take over the town and overrun the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force, which is based there. At least 16 towns and villages in the area were razed. Security analysts believe the targets of last weekend's attack were the civilian vigilantes helping the military in the counter-insurgency. Hiding from view between the wall and the house, behind a roadside stall and the cover of a thick neem tree, Grema said the rampaging Islamists unleashed mayhem. "All I could hear were ceaseless gunshots, explosions, screams from people and chants of 'Allahu Akbar' (God is greatest) from the Boko Haram gunmen," he added. "I remained in my hiding place until Tuesday evening. "Every night when it was dark, I would furtively scale the fence into my house to quickly eat garri (processed cassava granules) and drink water and go back to my hideout." His family was not at home. They were in Kukawa, 40 kilometres away, paying their respects after Boko Haram killed his wife's cousin about two months ago. "Some of the Boko Haram gunmen camped outside the Baga main market just 700 metres from my hideout," he explained. "At night I could see lights from the power generator they ran. I could also hear their cheering and laughter. "Luckily on Monday some of the gunmen withdrew while others stayed in the town. This reduced their number, which made it difficult for them to patrol the whole town. It worked to my advantage. "On Tuesday they began looting the market and every home in the town... Around 18:00 (17:00 GMT) they set fire to the market and began burning homes. I decided it was time I leave before they turn in my direction. "Around 19:30 I ventured out of my hiding and started to walk away from the noise coming from the gunmen. It was dark, so no-one could see me." Nomad herdsman In the bush, Grema chanced upon an old man at a nomadic Fulani herdsmen's settlement, who advised him to move west to avoid running into the militants. "His warning frightened me but made me more determined to get away. I thanked him and moved on," he said. "I quickened my pace. I soon caught up with... four women. One of them was carrying a baby on her back. "They told me they were among hundreds of women that were arrested by Boko Haram and detained in the home of the district head which Boko Haram had converted into a women's detention centre." Three of the women had been separated from their children, he added. Grema said he pushed out on his own, as the women were "too slow", running and walking throughout the night, before arriving at Kekeno village near Monguno, 65km away, the following morning. On Thursday, he took a bus from Monguno to Maiduguri. "I will never forget this experience and I will forever be grateful to the old Fulani nomad for his life-saving advice," he added. - AFP http://m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/Escape-from-Boko-Haram-I-kept-stepping-on-dead-bodies-20150111 |

A presidential source has disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan is not on twitter contrary to an earlier report by an online news site that claimed that the president operates the @JGoodlucktweets account. But upon investigation, it was revealed that the Twitter profile in question @JGoodlucktweets though pro-Jonathan, is not the twitter profile of the President neither is it listed on any of the President’s official platforms. “The president is not on twitter, he does not operate any account like that. His facebook account is verified where he engage Nigerians and the world. In fact, one of his aides granted an interview to a national daily in 2013 explaining why the President is not on Twitter,” the source said. President Jonathan is verified on Facebook where he has a following of almost 2 million followers. He has the second largest following of any President after US President, Barrack Obama and he regularly engages with Nigerians through that medium. KANO—The ancient city of Kano was thrown into shock yesterday following the confession of a 13 years old suicide bomber arrested by the police at the wake of twin bombblast that rocked the city textile market over how she was conscripted as suicide bomber by his biological father. 14 years old suspected suicide bomber The suicide bomber who identified herself as Zaharau Babangida told a bewildered city dwellers that ‘it began one day when my father took my mum and I to a forest in Bauchi where we met people claiming to be working for God”. In her confession, the frail looking Zaharau said “in the Bauchi forest I met some other girls who I guessed were my age mate and their leader told us to give our lives to God and enjoy the bounties of heaven’. I was not moved by the soul searching preaching of bounties in the heaven and it was at this point, their leader resorted to threat and intimidation to obtain my consent. We were shown a deep hole where the leader of the group threatened to bury us alive at a point if any of us refused to play along, and at another time he picked a big gun and threatened to shoot anyone who fails to obey his command.” Zaharau who told reporters that she hailed from Damaturu, the capital city of Yobe state explained that “it was at this point my father stepped forward to persuade me to play along, and told me to prepare to die as martyr and clear the way for him to join me soon”. The 13 years old girl who spoke fluent Hausa dialect further said “when I was confronted with option of death, I chose to play along hoping to find an escape route one day”. Speaking on the Kano bomb blast, Zaharau Babangida said “I and two other girls were conveyed to Kano and quartered at the outskirt of the city by a man I could hardly remember his name, and this same man conveyed all of us to the market square and deployed us at strategic positions at Kwari market on the day we struck. “I was taken aback when my partners were shattered to pieces barely a second after they detonated. I then rushed out of the scene to pick a commercial rickshaw to a hospital in Dawanau area of the city for medical treatment, and doctors were already attending to me when the driver of the Keke NAPEP resurfaced and showed me a metal object and requested to know whether it was mine of which I answered in affirmative. “I told him the object he dangled before me is a bomb and its mine, and in no time armed soldiers picked me from my sick bed to their headquarters.” Earlier in the day, the Department of State Security Services and the Nigerian Police had paraded her as one of the suicide bombers that attacked Kano textile market December 10. The Commissioner of police, Adelenre Shinaba who was flanked by the state Director of SS, Mr. Basey Ettang explained that the arrest was as a result of synergy among the security agents in the state. Meanwhile, a suicide bomber who rammed into a military check point in Bajoga, Gombe State in an attempt to perpetrate mass killings of troops and innocent civilians, yesterday failed to accomplish his mission, the Defence Headquarters’ has said. According to a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade, the attempt by the terrorist to escape also failed as he was brought down by vigilant soldiers when he tried to flee after hitting a military Amoured Personnel Carrier with his IED laden Honda car. The explosives which failed to detonate have been evacuated and handed to the police. Also in Kano, security forces have raided the terrorists’ hideout in Nasarawa Local Government Area leading to the arrest of bomb making experts who are already helping in the investigation into activities of bombers lately. Officers believe that the efforts will yield useful clues. Meanwhile, the Military High Command has directed troops deployed in all locations of the counter terrorism campaign to sustain the tempo of operations all through the period of seasonal celebrations and ensure that the intention of terrorists to attack civilian target while avoiding troops is duly frustrated. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/father-made-suicide-bomber-13-yr-old-suspect/

OSOGBO—Justice Jide Falola of an Osun State High Court sitting in Okuku has sentenced two robbers to death for stealing fowls. The convicts, Olowookere Segun and Morakinyo Sunday, were found guilty of forcefully breaking into the house of one Mr. Balogun Tope, a police officer attached to Divisional Police headquarters, Okuku, in April 2010 and carting away some of his belongings. The convicts were charged with conspiracy, robbery and stealing contrary to Section 6(b) and 1(2)(a) of Robbery and Firearm (Special Provisions) Act, cap R 11 Laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004 and Section (390)(1) Criminal Code Law, Cap 34, Laws of Osun State, 2002. The prosecution team, led by the state Solicitor-General, Mrs Abiola Adewemimo, called six witnesses and tendered several exhibits during the prosecution. The prosecution told the court that on November 13, 2010, men were sighted around Balogun’s home armed with cutlass and a dane gun, and that while two of them were arrested, others escaped. The convicts were said to have confessed that they stole the complainant’s fowls, adding that they had been in his house before to steal. Adewemimo said: “They also stated that they had earlier robbed Alhaja Umani Oyewo in her house and stole broilers, eggs and kegs of vegetable oil from the house.” In his judgment, Justice Falola convicted them on only three counts: to death for conspiracy; life sentence for robbery, and three years imprisonment for stealing. Justice Falola recommended that the governor can decide to commute the death sentence to 10 years imprisonment, considering the convicts’ ages. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/2-sentenced-death-stealing-fowls-osun-2/ |
