Am happy for this. Mopping up operation of some of the communities where terrorists have been cleared in the course of ongoing air and land operations against terrorists has indicated massive casualty inflicted on them within the last two days of the counter terrorists operations. Over 300 terrorists were killed while a few were also captured. Several weapons and equipment were also captured and some destroyed.http://saharareporters.com/2015/02/18/terrorists-incur-heavy-casualty-two-days-nigerian-military-operations-clear-11

Hundreds of Boko Haram Islamists on Saturday invaded the restive northeast Nigerian city of Gombe, firing heavy guns and throwing leaflets calling on residents to boycott the forthcoming general elections, locals told AFP. The Boko Haram gunmen are now at the Jeka-da-Fari roundabout in the centre of the city, firing indiscriminately and throwing pamphlets calling on people not to participate in the elections,” resident Ali Dahiru said. Other witnesses said the extremists stormed the city around 9:00 am and advanced without any resistance from the security forces. A Nigerian fighter jet encircled the city but made no attempt to attack the insurgents, said witness Kabiru Na-Gwandu. He said the residents had been warned to evacuate Gombe, which has been attacked by the insurgents previously. “I received calls from friends in Kwadam, which is five kilometres away, warning me to leave because Boko Haram were on their way,” said Na-Gwandu, who lives near the military base in the city. “I evacuated my house along with my family before they arrived the city and I’m happy that I did because from information I’m receiving they have taken over the military barracks,” he said. The Boko Haram fighters appealed to residents to boycott the elections which had originally been planned to take place on Saturday before they were postponed until March 28. Gombe has been repeatedly hit by suicide attacks and other bombings blamed on the Islamists in the six-year insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast. Two weeks ago, two suicide bombers blew themselves up outside a stadium, just minutes after President Goodluck Jonathan had left the venue where he had given a campaign speech. Many people were injured. In February 2012, Boko Haram launched its first offensive on the city, killing 14 people in a bomb attack on a police station. Soldiers repelled another attack on a nearby prison. AFP http://africanspotlight.com/2015/02/14/boko-haram-invades-gombe-asks-residents-boycott-elections/ |

Facebook Share Twitter Share Nigeria’s military said on Tuesday said the country’s sovereignty was not compromised despite the presence of Chadian ground troops in the northeast to fight Boko Haram. Chadian soldiers crossed the border from northern Cameroon to the Nigerian town of Gamboru on Tuesday after three days of bombardment of Boko Haram positions in a regional fight-back against the Islamists. They were also deployed near two villages on the Niger side of the border and appeared poised to cross into Nigeria to take the town of Malam Fatori, according to local residents. But Abuja’s defence spokesman Chris Olukolade played down concerns about the presence of a foreign power on Nigerian soil, and claimed the country’s troops were leading the offensives. “Contrary to the impression being pushed in some quarters, it is the Nigerian forces that planned and are driving the present onslaught against terrorists from all fronts in Nigeria, not the Chadian forces, as is being propagated by some media,” he said. Olukolade said there were contingents from Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad in the operations, which allowed “a massive move against terrorists from all angles”. Joint deployments and patrols have been conducted in Cameroon, Chad and Nigeria, he added. “Chadians and other are however keying into and working in concert with the overall plan for an all-round move against the terrorists, as agreed,” he said. “Nigeria’s territorial integrity remains intact.” Nigeria’s military has long been criticised for its inability to end the six-year Boko Haram insurgency, which aims to carve out a hardline Islamic state in the country’s far northeast. Pressure for a more effective multinational force to combat the group’s threat to regional security mounted after a deadly January 3 attack on the Nigerian town of Baga. The African Union last week back a five-nation, 7,500-strong force involving troops from Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin and the Chadian military began shelling Gamboru from Cameroon. Security analysts have suggested that Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan may be looking for a pre-election bounce from military successes as he seeks a second term of office on February 14. But Mark Schroeder, from security and political analysts Stratfor, told AFP this week that allowing foreign forces to operate on Nigerian soil would be counter-productive. “This is essentially absolving Nigeria of its long-standing geopolitical strength as the region’s hegemon able to assist internal and pan-West African security stability,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/nigeria-not-compromised-foreign-troops-soil-military/ |

Chadian aircraft on Saturday bombed the Nigerian town of Gamboru in a raid targeting Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, security sources said. A raid was carried out around midday by two fighter jets on the town in Nigeria’s far northeast along the Cameroon border, sources from Chad and Cameroon said on condition of anonymity. Boko Haram overran the town several months ago as part of its campaign to seize territory in the region and create an Islamic state. The Boko Haram uprising has become a regional crisis, with the four directly affected countries — Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria — agreeing to boost cooperation to contain the threat. Nigeria’s military said on Thursday that its fighter jets had bombed the northeast town of Malam Fatori, also controlled by Boko Haram. Witnesses and some media reports said troops and airforce planes from Chad were also involved in that operation on Nigerian soil but Abuja neither confirmed nor denied the claim. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday gave his backing to an African Union proposal to set up a regional five-nation force of 7,500 troops to fight Boko Haram. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/chadian-aircraft-bomb-nigerian-town-anti-boko-haram-raid/ |
President Goodluck Jonathan has blamed the non-rescue of the abducted Chibok girls on external forces, promising that his administration would do everything possible to end the Boko Haram insurgency in a matter of months. The president spoke, yesterday, at the palace of the Shehu of Borno where he had gone to pay homage to the traditional ruler. According to him, after ending the Boko Haram insurgency, his administration would rebuild the affected areas. Jonathan stated that, with the use of initiatives like Victim Support Fund, Presidential Initiative for North-east and Safe School Initiative as well as increased budgetary allocation, his administration will rebuild and redesign Borno State in such a way that children will have access to education and better future. President Goodluck Jonathan at the PDP presidential campaign rally in Maiduguri, yesterday. “We feel the pain of Borno people. I personally feel more pained when people accuse me of of being involved in the problem for some political advantage. I have said it many times that my ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian. And I don’t think any president or human being can do what they accuse me of doing,’’ the president said. “The Boko Haram problem is what I thought we would have ended long ago but may be external influence or interest is affecting us. I am assuring you however that it won’t take us more than a few months to end this insurgency and restore peace in Borno. “Our people must return to their communities. Insha Allahu, we will get our Chibok girls back’’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/external-forces-stalled-chibok-girls-rescue-jonathan/. |
Bauchi-Youths suspected to be supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday set ablaze the campaign office of All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, Barrister Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar in retaliation of the attack on President Goodluck Jonathan and vandalization of PDP billboards and posters. Saturday Vanguard gathered that the angry youths attacked and vandalized the Bauchi South Senatorial District campaign office of Barrister Abubakar which is located in Kobi Street at about 2 am when people were still in bed. Some residents of the area said: “We woke up and saw the office on fire and all the relevant things in the office had already been burnt and there was nothing we could do at that time to save the situation. We did not envisage that any reasonable person could do such a thing.” Some of them said they saw some group of persons storm the office in three Hilux vehicles and set the place ablaze and immediately drove out while the flame blazed for over two hours because of the documents in the office. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/pdp-youths-set-apc-office-ablaze/ |
President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said his sister, Mrs Nancy Oleic-Jonathan, died of a heart-related ailment. Oleic-Jonathan died on January 4 at the age of 52. Jonathan and his wife, Patience, made the remarks when they led other members of the family to a funeral service in honour of the deceased at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Otuoke, Bayelsa State. “Nancy’s ailment started during my tenure as the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. “She was my younger sister from another mother and had undergone several treatments both locally and abroad. We thank God she was able to live above the golden age of 50,” Jonathan said. Until her death, Nancy was a member of staff of Ogbia Central Medical Centre, Otuoke. She was married and blessed with six children. A biography by the family said Nancy was described to be a hard working and a devout Christian, who never took the things of the Lord for granted. She was also described as a great weaver, greatly endowed with craftsmanship. “In her days, priority in education was given to male children and being a child from a polygamous family, she did not have the opportunity to acquire a higher education,” the book read. According to the biography read by Mr Lamawal Jonathan, the deceased excelled greatly in craftsmanship which was her hobby. http://www.punchng.com/news/my-sister-died-of-heart-related-ailment-jonathan/ Earlier in his sermon, the Bishop of Ogbia Diocese, the Rt. Rev. J. A Oruwori, said death was an end that awaited every man |

Nigeria government said on Thursday that it may commence the consideration of withdrawing it’s troops on foreign mission to help in combating the escalating Boko Haram attacks in northern part of the country. The government decision may be hinged on the recent dismissals of over 400 soldiers base on various offenses ; most of whom were fighting the Boko haram terrorists in the front line states. Spokesman of the National Information Center, Mr, Mike Omeri said the government is ready to take all possible measures to ” defend the citizens in the face of terrorism “ “There is a need for a ‘troops surge’ in operational areas which may require recalling Nigerian troops from peace keeping missions abroad to enhance the operational capabilities of the Nigerian military. ” this action does not necessarily mean that the Nigerian Military is being depleted by the Boko Haram fighters, but the government will do all it can to protect lives and properties ” Omeri said today in Abuja. http://247ureports.com/boko-haram-nigeria-to-withdraw-troops-on-foreign-mission/ |

The Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on New Media, Reno Omokri has taken a swipe at the Vice-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for erroneously re-tweeting the photo of a crusade organised by renowned evangelist, Reinhard Bonnke in Ogbomosho, as that of his party’s presidential rally in Kano on Tuesday. Omokri took to twitter on Wednesday to tweet the photo of Jonathan’s rally in Kano with the caption, “This is not @ReinhardBonnke crowd photo (apologies to @ProfOsinbajo). This is a real crowd in Kano for GEJ #GEJisit✓” Prof. Osinbajo replied thus, “@renoomokri Going to Kano after we just left, Mr. Omokri? Good to see the PDP & Mr. President follow progress for a #Change. :-)”. Omokri then urged Osinbajo to pay copyright royalties to Evangelist Bonnke for ‘borrowing’ his picture. “@ProfOsinbajo You are welcome Prof. I hope you remembered to pay @ReinhardBonnke copyright royalties for ‘borrowing’ his picture? #GEJisit✓”. Omokri and former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro led other Nigerians on twitter to condemn the GMBVolunters and Osinbajo for re-tweeting the Reinhard Bonnke’s photo on Tuesday. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/fake-apc-kano-rally-photo-omokri-exchanges-banter-osinbajo/

Boko Haram freed two dozen hostages after a mass abduction by its militants in Cameroon, as Chad prepared Monday to engage in the international battle against the extremist group. Twenty-four of the 80 people taken hostage by Boko Haram in the north of Cameroon Sunday were released as Cameroonian armed forces pursued the Islamist extremists, according to a government source. The Boko Haram fighters then fled back into Nigeria, with the fate of the rest of the hostages taken in the raid, the worst of its kind to date, still unknown. An army officer based in Cameroon’s far north said Boko Haram had attacked two villages and kidnapped what Cameroonian state media said were 80 hostages. Three people also died in the assault. As the militants retreated, the Chadian army said it was putting 400 military vehicles, attack helicopters, and still unspecified number of soldiers amassed in northern Cameroon into action against Boko Haram, as part of what has become a regional effort to defeat the notoriously violent group. “We are going to advance (Monday) towards the enemy,” Chadian army colonel Djerou Ibrahim, who is leading the offensive against Boko Haram, told AFP from the strategic crossroads town of Maltam in northern Cameroon. “Our mission is to hunt down Boko Haram, and we have all the means to do that.” But Cameroonian Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary warned the armies of the two nations still had considerable planning to complete before being able to launch offensives against Boko Haram. “Military planners must evaluate the forces being coordinated and coalesced,” he said. “That takes time. Don’t expect to start seeing the results of that tomorrow. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/01/boko-haram-cameroon-army-frees-24-hostages/ |
