KINGSLEY OMONOBI-ABUJA. Details of how Abubakar Shekau, the impostor and leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group lost his left in a shootout with Nigerian troops in Konduga on Wednesday Sept. 17 emerged yesterday with military sources disclosing that he met his waterloo in an ambush reminiscent of the type the sect had been using to hack down Nigerian troops. Vanguard gathered that when the first attack on Konduga whereby hundreds of insurgents were taken unawares and killed after over seven hours of fighting and several of their colleagues, arms and ammunition captured, the military commanders strategically urged his captured members to send a message to Shekau that they (insurgents) have routed the troops. Before the captured insurgents were urged to make the contact and deliver the message, the military commanders had promised them that their cooperation would play a role in the level of punishment to be meted to them after the battle hence they felt reassured. Also, the captured insurgents had disclosed that Shekau usually moved in a convoy of cars painted in military colours while he sits in a MOWAG Armoured tank with Boko Haram inscription on its front. When Shekau was contacted, his captured men spoke to him in Arabic, assuring him that they had taken over Konduga, thereby giving him the all clear to proceed from Sambisa Forest. To convince him further, a set of his men captured were told to sing the victory song in Kanuri language they normally sing at the background. Having convinced himself that the messenger was his chief courier in such situation and the message is authentic, he and his followers made for Konduga, heavily armed with Anti-Aircraft weapons, General Purpose Machine Guns, several AK 47 rifles and other IEDS’. However, on entering Konduga town, he and his followers were encircled by strategically placed and heavily armed Nigerian soldiers. Immediately he contacted the messenger and discovered that something was amiss, he ordered his followers to start shooting in all direction. This spurred the Army Commanders to give the directive to open fire. When he discovered that the fire power of the Nigerian Army who used both Infantry and Artillery weaponry was overpowering that of his men, he jumped out of the MOWAG and made to escape. But eagle-eyed Nigerian Soldiers spotted him and opened fire in him, shattering his legs in the process. It was learnt that he also received bullet wounds in other parts of his body leading to his bleeding to death. Recall that Military sources had on Sunday night disclosed that Nigerian troops scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North East on September 17. The sources noted that during a desperate attempt to capture Konduga in their delusion to eventually marching on and capturing Maiduguri, the man who had been mimicking Late Abubakar Shekau in recent videos was feared to have been finally killed. The sources said, “It is getting more certain that the terrorists’ Commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014.” Affirming the development, PRNigeria sources said the suspected demise of the Boko Haram leader is responsible for the scattering of the sect members in different independent locations in the neighbouring countries, especially in Cameroon noticed in recent days. The security sources noted further that “the process of confirming that the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing” adding “He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. I don’t want to say anything about this yet please.” Another high ranking military source insisted that the resemblance is too striking to be a coincidence. “They cited his facial marks, beards and teeth apart from the recovery by the Nigerian troops of some of the Armoured Vehicles and Hilux jeeps that had featured in previous videos of the prime suspect. “The officers assured that the Defence Headquarters will soon address the nation after full investigation of their latest discovery”. Meanwhile, the Defence headquarters yesterday dismissed insinuation that Cameroonian military personnel carried out raids on Boko Haram terrorists into border communities in Nigeria. According to a report posted on its twitter handle, DHQ said “There was no raid whatsoever in any part of Nigeria’s territory in pursuit of terrorists as claimed in some reports allegedly quoting Cameroon military authorities”. “All operations ongoing in the environs of Konduga & all associated border location within the country are completely being undertaken by Nigerian troops” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/boko-haram-leader-abubakar-shekau-killed-investigations/ |
By KINGSLEY OMONOBI-ABUJA As the news of the killing of their leader in Konduga begin to spread among Boko Haram insurgents, more of the terrorists believing their planned attack on Maiduguri would no longer be feasible, have continued to surrender to Nigerian soldiers. On Sunday night another set of terrorists surrendered to troops in Kawuri, the town a bloody battle raged between troops and the terrorists a fortnight ago leaving over 50 terrorists dead. In a tweet on the incident posted its handle yesterday, the Defence headquarters said, “Another Set of 10 Terrorists yesterday surrendered to Troops at Kawuri. In custody for necessary security debriefing” Vanguard gathered that with this number from Kawuri; about 40 terrorists including those from Konduga have so far surrender. Only on Saturday, 5 terrorists surrendered with all their weapons to troops at Konduga pleading for mercy Recall that over fifty terrorists were killed in a recent shootout as troops raided their hideout in Kawuri before setting out on a planned attack on Konduga. One Fabricated Artillery Gun, Two Anti – Aircraft gun, an armoured vehicle and assorted types of ammunition were captured in the process. Some hardware, weapons, food items and personal belongings were also destroyed in the Raid. One Officer and Two Soldiers were seriously wounded in the confrontation. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/10-boko-haram-terrorists-surrender/ |

Nigerian troops might have scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North East on September 17. Abubakar Shekau According to senior military and intelligence sources, "it is getting more certain that the terrorists' commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014." http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/survived-kano-blast/ Facebook Share Twitter Share By AbdulSalam Muhammad KANO—A 12 years old primary five pupil of Warure primary school survivor of the Wednesday blast that rocked the Federal College of Education, Kano, Abdulbasit Umar, has revealed that it was through luck that he survived to tell his own story. Speaking with Vanguard on his hospital bed, yesterday, the lad revealed that the college was his temporary abode, as he hawked sachet water since they began their long vacation July 24. He said, ‘it was the peak of our business when suddenly a deafening sound punctured the peace and I went down unprepared. When I recovered from the shock and took to my heel, I heard gunshot felling those behind me one after the other.” The sachet water hawker said that “at a point that I thought I had sped to safety, I was hit on the thigh and fell down in pains.” The young lad with bruises all over his body said that “sensing the danger and confusion that dominated the environment, I crawled to safety before a good Samaritan came and rescued me alongside several injured to the hospital. Umar who had bullets lodged in his thigh was among several others waiting for procedure at the Murtala Muhammed Hospital, where the medical doctors are already waiting to perform the operation. The lad who betrayed emotion during the short interaction rhetorically questioned the reporter “will I ever work with my feet again?” His experience came on the heel of reports from the hospital that three out of 34 injured from the Wednesday blast had died last night bringing the official death toll from the incident to 18. In the meantime, the Federal Government has directed National Emergency Relief Agency, NEMA to provide relief to all those affected by the blast. |

HOW TO IDENTIFY A BOKOHARAM SYMPATHIZER In football, when the team you are supporting scores a goal, you announce it by shouting goaaal!!. Even your neighbours who don’t have Television will know that your team have scored. When the other team scores, you keep quiet and those outside won’t even know that a goal was scored. Now this is how you know the supporters of Terrorism. When they hear that terrorists have bombed Nyanya or Madaballa, they announce it all over facebook, post pictures to prove it, source the net for the most horrible pictures they can find so they can spread, all to magnify the efforts of their team.Even when the authorities say 30 people were killed, they say its a lie, and claim it was up to 10,000 people. They do everything to magnify the efforts of the terrorist. But when they hear that Nigerian soldiers have killed 50 terrorist, they keep quiet. Even when they talk, they mock the story, arguing it was exaggerated. Some even ask for evidence . When they hear that a terrorist have been arrested or extradited, they keep quiet, mock the efforts of the security officers and try to diminish their efforts. Some have made themselves Boko Haram Public Relation Officers. While the military is struggling to spread information and inspire people, create hope and encourage their men at the fronts, Boko Haram won’t even spend money and some people will spread their evil gospel for free, create panic, spread fear and gradually paint a picture of hopelessness source ACHEKWU BUNZA fb |

MAIDUGURI – No fewer than 45 suspected members of Boko Haram sect have been killed in an encounter with military troops when the terrorists attempted to invade and take over Bama Local Government Area of Borno State. Over 30 of the insurgents were also injured in the fierce battle with security operatives that lasted for over 5 hours. The incident according to sources started in the early hours ofMondayat about5:30am. This is even as an unconfirmed report revealed that another group of the insurgents were sightedon Mondayaround Mafa Local Government Area and Kayamula villages of Konduga Local Government Area near Maiduguri metropolis, but the ones sighted around Kayamula village were killed by military troops, while those around Mafa were suspected to be making frantic effort to enter the metropolis. Bama is about 76 kilometres drive and south east of Maiduguri, the state capital which had witnessed series of deadly attacks by suspected terrorists. A competent source said, “the insurgents stormed the town through Bama-Banki-Gwoza Road but were intercepted by gallant military troops near the Bama Mobile Police Unit located about 5 kilometers away from Bama town. The Boko Haram insurgents were said to have tactically attempted to enter Bama town in convoy of military vehicles and motorcycles wearing military uniform armed with sophisticated weapons and local Improved Explosive Devices (IEDs). http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/45-boko-haram-members-killed-army-repel-attack-bama/ |

KANO (AFP) – Boko Haram gunmen have killed scores of residents in a Nigerian town on the border with Cameroon that they captured in recent raids, witnesses told AFP on Saturday. The militants seized Gamboru Ngala earlier this week after taking over military and police facilities in a fierce gun battle which forced thousands of residents across the border into Cameroon. The residents fled to Fotokol for fear of attack by the Islamists, despite being told they were only after security personnel and local vigilantes. “They are now killing people like chickens,” said Sidi Kyarimi, a Gamboru resident who fled to Fotokol on Friday. “They started by selective killings and later went on a killing spree.” Among those killed included the town’s highest Muslim cleric and the head of its traders’ union, he said. “They threaten to kill anybody who refuses to leave the town. They say we don’t belong,” he added. The insurgents were roaming the streets of the town carrying guns and machetes, shooting and hacking to death residents, said Yusuf Sanda, who also fled to Fotokol. “They have been breaking into homes and shops and looting them,” he said. “Initially they said we were free to stay or leave but now they are saying all residents should leave the town because it is now an Islamic Caliphate.” Sanda said he escaped to Fotokol by wading through the shallow river on the border because it was too dangerous to walk the streets with the insurgents on the prowl. Boko Haram has in recent weeks seized territory in northern Borno state near the border with Cameroon in an apparent move to carve out a state for themselves. In a video obtained by AFP last weekend, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau declared the town of Gwoza, which his men captured earlier this month, as part of an Islamic caliphate. Boko Haram now controls at least three districts in Borno state and at least one each in Yobe and Adamawa states. The military has maintained that Nigeria’s sovereignty is intact and denied reports that soldiers fled the Boko Haram assault in Gamboru Ngala into Cameroon. Borno, Yobe and Adamawa have been under a state of emergency since May last year but despite some initial gains, the military has been unable to stem increasing violence, particularly in remote regions. Madagali, a predominantly Christian town in the north of Adamawa state, was the latest to fall in the hands of Boko Haram after they chased out troops. Scores of Christians were killed in the town and many Christian women were allegedly forced to convert to Islam and marry insurgents, according to the spokesman for the Roman Catholic diocese of Maiduguri. “Christian men were caught and beheaded, the women were forced to become Muslim and were taken as wives to the terrorists,” Father Gideon Obasogie alleged. “The houses of Christians that have fled are now occupied by the Haramists. Their cars are used by the terrorists. Strict Sharia law had been promulgated”, he added in an emailed statement. There was no independent confirmation of Obasogie’s claims due to poor phone networks in the remote region and the mass exodus of residents http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/christian-men-beheaded-women-forced-become-muslim-witnesses/ |
Another reason is lack of motivation and proper or adequate life insurance scheme for security operatives in the battle field. Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State was recently quoted to have said that “ lack of motivation for troops by the Federal Government was the reason Boko Haram remained undefeated”. Shettima added: “Boko Haram are better armed and are better motivated than our own troops, and, given the present state of affairs, it is absolutely impossible for us to defeat Boko Haram”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/gwoza-easy-target-boko-haram-investigation/ |
When last weekend the leader of the Islamist group Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, said Gwoza in Borno State had been declared an ‘Islamic Caliphate’, following its alleged capture, the military was quick to deny the claim. Yet the question on the lips of may concerned Nigerians is why the town has become so vulnerable to Boko Haram attacks, having been invaded severally in the past. Gwoza is a Local Government Area of Borno State. Its headquarters is Gwoza, a border town about 135 kilometres south-east of Maiduguri. It has an area of 2,883 km² and a population of 276,312, going by the 2006 census. A picture taken from a video distributed to journalists in recent days through intermediaries and obtained by AFP on March 5, 2013 reportedly shows Abubakar Shekau (C), the suspected leader of Nigerian Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, flanked by six armed and hooded fighters in an undisclosed place. The terrain, rocky and hilly, with the height of about 1300m above sea level, provides scenery and is made up of ranges of mountains known as the Mandara Mountains. These mountains form a natural barrier between Nigeria and Cameroon, starting from Pulka. They overlook the Sambisa game reserves by meandering towards Mubi and beyond in Adamawa State. Gwoza LGA has been called “a notorious hide out for the Boko Haram insurgents,” who arrived in the area in 2009 from Maiduguri. The area has suffered considerable violence as a result of the Islamist insurgency, and, in 2014, saw an influx of Boko Haram fighters fleeing Sambisa forest. In June 2014, reports indicated that Gwoza was under attack. The reports could not be substantiated because most telephone masts in the town and surrounding villages had been vandalized by insurgents. Security operatives and residents reported that “roads out of the region are extremely dangerous and phone connections are poor to non-existent”. Following the efforts displayed by the military to take over Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State from Boko Haram, sources said the insurgents ran away and wreaked havoc on neighbouring Gwoza in August, a situation that led to the taking over of the town and surrounding villages of Pulka, Ashigashiya, Limankara and the National Police Mobile training camp by the insurgents. Infact, what took place in Damboa between the military and the insurgents before the former reclaimed the town could be described as “a farmer, who instead of killing pests in his farmland, only drives the pests into another person’s farmland”. There are many reasons insurgents find it easy to operate without confrontation in Gwoza and other communities in Borno. While some of the reasons may be natural, others could be human -made or artificial. The natural scenery and surrounding Mandara Mountains as well as the porous borders with Cameroon Republic make it easy for proliferation of arms and ammunitions into Nigeria. The physical features of the area is another reason because of the long mountain range which provides an escape route for Boko Haram. Likewise, the hilly environment with vegetations serves as hideouts and caves to insurgents that take the advantage of using ‘hide, hit or run’ into their caves making it difficult for ground troops and the air force to locate and bombard them whenever they strike on military formations or residents. Another natural factor, according to investigation, has to do with the terrain itself that the military finds difficult to penetrate with their vehicles, while the terrorists, conversant with the area, use bicycles, motorcycles and sometimes operate on foot to perpetrate their evil and run away. A man- made or artificial factor, which sources described as the major headache of the military in curtailing the insurgents, has to do with “lack of zeal by government and the security forces to end the insurgency as both benefit from the crisis politically, economically socially.” According to sources, apart from the fear of being attacked or killed for giving intelligence reports to security agents on the hideouts and modus operandi of the sect by residents, one other factor is the sympathy by some Gwoza indigenes for Boko Haram. Right from the time the group came into being, many of them, due to poverty and fanatism in the land, were recruited and played major roles in unleashing terror on the rest of the society. It is natural therefore that when Boko Haram was chased out of town and its members fled to Sambisa forest, which borders Gwoza and Damboa, some indigenes of Gwoza in particular were in no position to give intelligence on their area to the military which made the town an easy target, |

Somewhere in Okemesi Ekiti in southwestern Nigeria lives a grand old woman who had been there for the past 136years! She still has her teeth, move around on her steam, and eats corn, rice and meat, especially beef, in her own words! This woman, is no other person than supercentenarian Queen mother (Olori) Mofeyisayo Aniyeloye (nee Awosina). Going through the Straits Times issue of June 11, 2014, I was miffed by the claim that “Misao Okawa for Osaka, Japan, is the oldest living person in the world at 116”. Current Validated Living Supercentenarians For your information, Misao was only 2years old when Olori Feyisayo Awosina married Oba Aniyeloye, the Owaoye of Okemesi Ekiti in 1900. And Feyisayo could not have gone to husband’s house at less than 22years of age in those days.(See video interview). This claim is authenticated by the very fact that mama Feyisayo was Aniyeloye’s queen before the Oba made a journey to Lagos in 1902 to meet with the Prince of Wales who came from England to visit the Colony and the British Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. Queen mother Feyisayo can no more recall a lot of things. But her last child, a daughter, who was still living too, was born in 1924. When Oba Aniyeloye died on July 23, 1937, Madam Feyisayo was far into menopause and could not be inherited, according to tradition, by the next Oba. But she remained in the palace for most of the period of the reign of Oba Joseph Dada Atobatele Ariyowonye I, in Okemesi Ekiti. Some wives of Aniye younger than Feyisayo had issues for Oba Joseph Dada. Examples was Queenmother Oni Aniye (later Dada) who bore Prince Sunday Adeola Dada after she was inherited by Oba Dada. Sunday Dada was born in 1942. Oba Dada ascended the throne in 1938. I was at mama Feyisayo’s place on June 12 this year to do the accompanying documentary. She spoke to my team, sang panegyrics in favour of late husband and her own parents. Each time she mentioned her husband’s name, she bowed her head! She laughed with us and I saw her set of teeth. When I asked her through proxy if she was alive when Oba Aniyeloye was crowned, she bantered back at me if the Oba married “nothing” if she was not there! Olori Mofeyisayo still takes walks to the market and watches the road carefully before crossing – and indication that her sight is still quite good. I was really disappointed in her living conditions as those around her do not appreciate the uniqueness of this woman in their midst. She wore a simple blue frock and sat on a stool just by the entrance to her home. The wives of her late children and their children (her ground children) look after her. When I gave her a dash of just two thousand naira she knelt down to me and instructed the woman holding the money for her to remember to buy cassava peels for her goats. Other than some limited panegyrics, Olori cannot recall names and events again. * Mike Oyeniyan, an educationist is a member of the IBAKA editorial board. He is authour of OKEMESI: Land of the Brave. Lagos – Three hotel attendants, who allegedly recorded a customer’s sexual affair and demanded a ransom of N10 million, were on Thursday charged before an Ogudu Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos. The employees had used the hotel’s CCTV to record the guest’s sexual exploit with his girlfriend. The accused: Sunday Okon, 23; Rita Emmanuel, 28; and Goodness Akpan, 24, whose addresses are unknown, are facing a four-count charge of fraud, demanding property with menace, conspiracy and indecent practices. Prosecutor Uche Simon told the court that the accused had on Aug. 13 at a hotel in Ogudu area of Lagos conspired to record a guest while sleeping with his girlfriend. According to him, the accused produced a VCD on it which they circulated to residents of the area. He alleged that they also demanded a N10 million ransom and threatened to post it on the facebook if the man failed to part with the money. “The accused actually posted it on the facebook between Aug. 13 and 23.’’ Simon said the offences contravened Sections 136, 166 (d), 299 and 409 of Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused may be sentenced to a minimum of three years each on conviction. The three men pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum. NAN also reports that the three attendants were taken to Kirikiri Prisons pending the fulfillment of their bail conditions. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. J. KINGSLEY OMONOBI-ABUJA. Former Chief of Army Staff, General Onyeabor Azubuike Ihejirika on Thursday opened a can of worms by declaring that the former minister of the Federal Capital Territory and APC Chieftain, Mallam Nasir El-Rufia is one of the frontline Commanders of the Boko Haram terrorist group. Speaking with Vanguard over allegation by the former minister that he (Ihejirika) and former Governor Modu Sheriff of Borno State were fingered as terrorists sponsors, General Ihejirika said he is not surprised that this unimaginable allegation is coming from ‘one of the Boko Haram Commanders’. “The (Commanders) including El-Rufai know where the problem is. He should stop deceiving Nigerians by trying to divert attention”. According to Ihejirika, “When the Boko Haram operation started, supporters of the sect like El-Rufai said that there was nothing like Boko Haram and that the army was just killing innocent youths”. “If you also remember, not too long ago, some of their supporters including El-Rufai said that I was re-inventing the killing of the Ibos during the Biafra war following government’s determination to rid the country of terrorism. Ihejirika who was obviously angry while speaking on phone, also said, “The likes of El-Rufai started the campaign of human right abuses, in order to divert the international attention of the heinous crime being committed by the Boko Haram terrorists”. Gen. Ihejirika then recalled recent allegations against his person indicating that that he took away N48 billion, an amount of money which is still in the coffers of the Ministry of Defence, which can be verified by anybody adding that he was not surprised that these allegation is coming from the likes of El-Rufai who started the campaign. Continuing the former Army Chief said, “The likes of El-Rufai have been supporting Boko Haram. In fact, El-Rufai and his likes are the same group of people that ensured the army did not to get the requested equipment to deal with this menace once and for all, as they used their cohorts to tell the government that procuring modern equipment were not necessary”. Recalling that the same El-Rufai went to Thisday Newspaper premises to grant interview to condemn security forces for the efforts at ridding the country of these senseless mayhem by the terrorists, Ihejirika said, “At the onset of this crisis, I was the first person to declare that the country was at war but group of sponsors led by El-Rufai disagreed, that it was not true”. “It is the same group of El-Rufai that started the human right abuses campaign. It was done in order to block any international assistance after the state of emergency was declared and the sect was initially tamed. That gave Boko Haram time and respite to build up again”. Furthermore, General Ihejirika said that when the United States was to initially declare Boko Haram a terrorist organization, the same El-Rufai and his group mounted pressure on the international community, using alleged human right abuses as campaign strategy. The former Army Chief revealed that this same group including El-Rufai have taken further steps in support of Boko Haram, “which I cannot disclose for now”. It will be recalled that shortly after his tenure came to an end as COAS, some Northern political elites started the crusade for General Azubuike Ihejirika to be summoned before the International criminal Court in the Hague claiming that he killed their sons and daughters innocently whereas it is on record that no other military leader but Ihejirika did a lot in helping the nation contain the rapid spread of Boko Haram insurgency in the country. He not only established the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army with headquarters in Maiduguri, he established new Army Brigades, Counter Terrorism Schools in Kachia and Jaji as well as the Terrorism Training School.
