HealthOnly Lagos, Kano, Ogun, FCT Still Conducting COVID-19 Tests – PTF by SandraJane(op): 5:27am On Sep 22, 2020
The Director-General, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chike Ihekweazu, has said that the COVID-19 transmission would rise with the reopening of schools and airports.

He, therefore, warned against complacency and the belief that infection rates were declining.

Speaking on Monday during a media briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, the DG said only Lagos, Federal Capital Territory, Ogun and Kano states had been consistently carrying out a high volume of testing.

Specifically, Ihekweazu said testing rates had declined drastically in Taraba, Adamawa, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa and Yobe states.

The DG observed that Nigerians were not responding to the plea to come out for testing, adding that the testing needed to be sustained in order to combat the pandemic.

He added, “I am very confident about what is going on in Lagos, FCT, Ogun and probably Kano and a few other states. Having said that, it doesn’t mean they should let down their guards completely.

“In fact, with schools and airports opening, we have to increase the level of our testing because inevitably, there would be more transmission. So, how are you able to mitigate the impact of that moving forward, given that we have learnt so much about this virus in the last few months.

Also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman, Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, called for more vigilance to forestall possible resurgence of the COVID-19 as schools resumed in some states across the country.

He warned that the appreciable progress recorded might be eroded, especially due to the opening of the airspaces to international travels, relaxation of a number of restrictions and opening up of more sectors of the economy.

The National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu, said Nigeria was performing below target in terms of tests for COVID-19, warning Nigerians against making the country to record a second wave of the pandemic.

According to him, people are avoiding the tests for various reasons, including payment, fear and stigma.

He, however, stated that the government had established and accreditedlaboratories where tests are done for free.

Aliyu said, “The PTF remains seriously concerned about the current low testing rate we have in the country. Nigerians are not getting tested for COVID-19 but we must test to track, in order to slow the spread of the virus even further and to stop any more preventable COVID-related death.”

Aliyu urged Nigerians to go for COVID-19 tests, which he said are free at 69 laboratories and centres across the country. According to him, a weekly assessment by the PTF had shown that more Nigerians have shown lack of interest in testing for the virus.

CrimeDad In Court Over Defilement Of Five-year-old Daughter In Lagos by SandraJane(op): 6:23am On Sep 05, 2020
A 29-year-old man, Adekunle Adebiyi, is currently cooling his heels in police custody in Lagos for allegedly defiling his five-year-old daughter, Bola (pseudonym).

Adebiyi reportedly committed the crime following a stormy relationship between him and his estranged lover, Anu, who is the mother of the victim.

City Round learnt that the lovers had kept each other at arm’s length but reconciled again in May 2020 on Adebiyi’s request.

On returning from a shopping trip on May 26, the girl reportedly took ill and Adebiyi gave Anu his Automated Teller Machine card to withdraw N5,000 at a nearby bank for her treatment.

It was gathered that Bola was with her father at a barber’s around Abule Egba, while the mother rushed to the bank. By the time she came back, Adebiyi was said to have run away with the girl.

Our correspondent learnt that the incident was reported to the police and Bola was reunited with her mother one week later.

Anu said she began to notice some strange changes in her child’s behaviour as she always complained whenever she wanted to wash her private parts.

She stated, “He bought a tablet for our daughter but there was no application on it. He said he had called a friend in Ikeja to download applications on the tab. He said we should go shopping for our daughter and we stopped by at a barbershop.

“The child was ill that day and he asked me to withdraw N5,000 from his account. When I came back, I didn’t meet him and my child. I called his number but he didn’t pick up. I then sent a text message to him and he replied that he was on Third Mainland Bridge. I reported to the police at Oko Baba.

“We searched everywhere but didn’t find him. His friends also said they didn’t know his whereabouts. My mum and I went to his father’s house in Meiran. After one week, he returned the child.

“When I got home, I noticed some changes in her. She would be holding her chest and wouldn’t allow me to wash her private parts. I asked her what happened but she didn’t say anything.

“About three weeks after, I woke her up at night and asked her why she didn’t allow me to touch her private parts. She said his dad touched her ‘bum bum’ with his finger and his ‘thing’. I was shocked. I reported the case at Alausa (Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team office) and we were referred to Isokoko Police Station. He denied to have sexually harassed her and his family has been threatening me.”

A medical test carried out on Bola at the Mirabel Centre, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, reportedly confirmed that her private parts had been tampered with.

Adebiyi was arrested and consequently arraigned in an Ogba magistrates’ court on one count of defilement.

The charge read in part, “That you, Adekunle Adebiyi, did unlawfully defile one girl (name withheld) by inserting your penis into her vagina, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”

Adebiyi was remanded in police custody while the case was adjourned till October 6, 2020.

PoliticsSubsidy Removal In 2020 Painful Than 2012, Says PENGASSAN by SandraJane(op): 4:41pm On Sep 04, 2020
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria says the removal of the petroleum subsidy by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 is better than the one done by the current regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

The President of PENGASSAN, Festus Osifo, said the circumstances surrounding the recent increase in the cost of fuel are far worse those of 2012

Osifo said this on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme which was monitored by our correspondent.

Jonathan had in January 2012 removed fuel subsidy which caused nationwide protests especially in Lagos where thousands of people poured into the streets to express their displeasure.

Responding to a question on Friday, however, the PENGASSAN President said removing the subsidy in 2012 was actually a better decision because it had a lesser effect on the people.

He said increasing fuel price in 2020 in the middle of the global COVID-19 pandemic and a worsening economy could worsen the suffering of the people.

Osifo further stated that PENGASSAN and other stakeholders were not carried along.

When asked if 2012 was a better time to increase fuel price, Osifo said, “I think the timing today is even more problematic compared to 2012 because we are battling a pandemic. I can tell you that for a lot of households their income has diminished; a lot of businesses have been shut down since March.

“I can tell you that today, Nigerians are facing hardship. I believe that 2012 was a bit better than it is today because the pandemic has ravaged the average household in Nigeria. You have seen the recent figures from the National Bureau of Statistics. We are actually in negative GDP. By the next quarter, we could be in recession. This is not the right time to have done this.”

Osifo noted that functional local refineries remained the best solution to fuel price hike.

He, however, said, for the time being, the government must do everything possible to alleviate the suffering of the people.

“This was not the right time to do such a thing because we are battling a global pandemic. This is the era where the real wage of workers has diminished. This is an era where we are entering a recession and other parts of the world and citizens are being supported with palliatives. I think this is not the best time to have done this,” he added.

CrimePolice Attack Alaba Peters, Lagos Community Leader With Axe - Picture by SandraJane(op): 7:32am On Aug 31, 2020
A community leader, Alaba Peters, has accused men of the Lagos State Police Command of attacking him with an axe for intervening in a dispute.

The victim, who claimed to have been hospitalised after the incident, urged the state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, to bring the culprits to justice.

PUNCH Metro learnt that some policemen attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit, Gbagada, had stormed the Odogunyan area of the state around 4.30pm on August 10, 2020, and arrested some tricycle operators’ union workers.

The community leader was said to have intervened and asked the cops the reason for the arrest, which did not go down with them.

Peters told PUNCH Metro that he was beaten with an axe by the cops, who eventually drove the union workers away from the scene.

He said, “Some policemen came to Odogunyan on August 10 to arrest some people and some of our union workers were among those arrested; so, I approached the officers to ask why they arrested the union workers and I was told that because they were not wearing the union’s jacket; the policemen started shooting indiscrimenately and when I asked where they came from, they said they were from the Anti-Cultism Unit at Gbagada.

“When I saw that they were taking the boys away, I went back to meet them in front of the grammar school at Odogunyan to ask them what we could do to get the boys released, but the cops got angry that I came to meet them again and ordered me to sit on the floor and threatened to shoot me.

“I showed them my ID card but they refused to look at it and one of them went into their vehicle to bring an axe and started beating me with it. I want justice to prevail, because I cannot be treated like an animal. I sustained injuries all over my body as a result of the beating.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “We were at the bus stop when some members of the Anti-Cultism Unit came and arrested some of our boys and when we asked them what the boys did, they didn’t answer us; so, Alaba Peters approached them but they didn’t answer him and they took those boys away and Alaba Peters went back to meet them, but they brought out an axe from their car and started beating him with it.

“When we also approached the policemen, they started shooting indiscriminately, so we could not do anything and they took the boys away.

CelebritiesAllwell Ademola Celebrates 35th Birthday Every Year, Explains Why by SandraJane(op): 8:33am On Aug 30, 2020
Actress and singer, Allwell Ademola, got many people talking recently when she celebrated her birthday, stating that she was 35 as she had in the past few years always celebrated her 35th birthday.

In an encounter with Sunday Scoop the entertainer said clocking 35 every year didn’t mean she was truly 35 years old.

“How can one person be clocking the same age for four continuous years? How can that be real? You obviously know it is a joke. If someone is celebrating the same age every year, you should know the person is just ‘catching a cruise.’

“The person is just trying to be funny and staying young. I am an entertainer; I am just trying to entertain people. Clocking 35 every year doesn’t mean I am 35. It is just a way of entertaining people. Also, next year, I am going to be celebrating another 35th year,” she said.

Asked how she felt celebrating her birthday amid the COVID-19 pandemic, she said, “I am grateful to God for being alive. I am grateful that we have been able to scale through COVID-19, though it is still there.

Baring her thoughts on why many marriages don’t last, she said, “It has always been like that since the days of our parents. We have seen people fall in and out of love. Marriages break, people divorce, it’s like that everywhere. But first of all, I think we have so many millennial marriages and millennial children. I will blame it on education, to an extent. People are becoming ‘whiter’ than the whites. In the Bible, it is said that the woman would give back in tears and the man will take care of his wife. That is how it has been.

“But now, both parties take care of each other. The man takes care of the wife and the wife takes care of the husband because they are both working. They both collaborate to pay the children’s school fees and pay house rents. That is how it is now. I have a feeling that because people are fighting over equality, some women feel they cannot stand being with their husbands, or that is why some men seek adventure and think they cannot stay with a woman under the same roof. We just have to pray to God to bring back the times of old when there was sanity in our lives and in our homes.”

CelebritiesChristmas Celebration Is Unbiblical - Pastor Olukoya by SandraJane(op): 8:26pm On Dec 25, 2019
Dr Daniel Olukoya, the General Overseer, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), says the church does not celebrate Christmas because it is unbiblical.

Speaking at the Wednesday Manner Water Service which coincided with the 2019 Christmas celebration at the Church’s Headquarters in Lagos, Olukoya says no book in the bible recorded the word ‘ Christmas’ or that Jesus was born on Dec. 25.

“If you really study the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, there is no word like Christmas.

The bible only recorded that the Shepherds were taking care of their flocks during a very cold season when they sighted the star that announced the birth of Jesus Christ. This cold period could be around April or May,’’ Olukoya said.

According to him, Dec. 25 is a date originally set aside by the ancient Romans for Mars festival by the worshippers of the sun.

Olukoya said that the birth of Christ was subsequently co-opted into the same date to give the Mars festival more popularity and then renamed ‘Christmas’.

He warned the modern Christians to stop promoting such unbiblical celebration.
According to him, the MFM church has decided to henceforth engage members in various spiritual activities during such periods and other public holidays to discourage them from partaking in such unscriptural celebration.
