On the Demolition of the Owo Memorial Park: Ondo State Government Lied The recent response by the Ondo State Government to the press statement issued by the Bishop of Ondo Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Jude Arogundade, has exposed the fact behind the demolition of the Owo Memorial Park. The government’s attempt to justify the demolition relies on a narrative riddled with distortions and half-truths. Facts, however, remain inviolable, and the truth, obstinate in its nature, compels us to set the record straight. This intervention is not intended to disparage the revered stool of the Olowo of Owo or to engage in public contention with the respected authority of the king, his chiefs, or the people of Owo. Rather, in the absence of the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON whose memory we honour, it falls upon us, as conscientious citizens, to illuminate the facts surrounding this controversy for the benefit of the public. The State Government’s Position: 1. The land on which the Owo Memorial Park was constructed originally belonged to AgroMore Limited, a company purportedly owned by Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye prior to his ascension as the Olowo of Owo. 2. In 2010, the administration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko acquired this land from AgroMore Limited for public use, specifically for road dualization. In January 2021, the Akeredolu administration purportedly reallocated the land to its original owner, AgroMore Limited. The Facts: 1. The claim that the land originally belonged to AgroMore Limited, a company allegedly owned by Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye, is a blatant lie. It is both surprising and disheartening that a state government, entrusted with the custody of public records, would propagate such a claim without due diligence. The absence of administrative rigour in verifying these records, evident in the complaints of inertia from ministries and parastatals under the current administration, only compounds the embarrassment. No documentary evidence supports the claim that AgroMore Limited held title to the land in question. We challenge the government to produce any evidence that support the claim of AgroMore ownership. 2. The government’s narrative that the Mimiko administration acquired the land from AgroMore Limited in 2010 for road dualization is perfidious. Historical records are there to puncture these lies. The land in question was acquired from families with longstanding ties to the area, namely the Oshurogho, Okungbaye, Arala, Oluo Saliu, Oloba, Aladenika, and Adedayo families. These families, whose ancestral homes stood on the land, were compelled to exhume the remains of their forebears as part of the acquisition process; a poignant evidence to their ownership. No record exists of AgroMore Limited or Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye among those compensated for the acquisition. At the time, Oba Ajibade was a level 12 civil servant in the state civil service. Aiyedatiwa’s claim that AgroMore owned the land in 2010 is a fabrication of bewildering audacity. 3. While it is true that in 2021, the late Governor Akeredolu allocated the land to Oba Ajibade, the circumstances surrounding this decision and its subsequent revocation must be understood by members of the public. Following his ascension to the throne, Oba Ajibade expressed his desire to acquire a portion of the land for personal use. Through intermediaries, he secured the approval of late Governor Akeredolu, who instructed the then Commissioner for Works, Lands, and Housing, Hon. Fatai Olotu, and the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr. Raimi Aminu, to facilitate the allocation. However, when surveyors began partitioning the land, the rightful owners, specifically the Aladenika family, protested. Through their legal counsel, Clement Olorunmeke, Esq., they submitted a petition asserting that the land, acquired for public use, could not be reallocated for private purposes. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, the late Governor Akeredolu understood the legal implications of this allocation. Following deliberations with ministry officials, he directed that the allocation be revoked to avoid litigation, which the Aladenika family was poised to win. Consequently, no Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) was issued to Oba Ajibade. If such a document exists, we challenge the State Government to present it to members of the public. 4. The government’s claim of ongoing discussions between the Palace of the Olowo and the state regarding the relocation of the Memorial Park prior to Governor Akeredolu’s demise is both irresponsible and wicked. Akeredolu’s vision was to construct a world-class museum directly behind the Memorial Park, a project that necessitated further land acquisitions. No evidence supports the assertion of discussions regarding relocation, and to attribute such a narrative to a deceased leader unable to defend his legacy is an affront to both truth and decency. Let it be known to all sons and daughters of Owo, that the demolition of the park is far from serving a communal purpose. The pressure and decision to demolish the park is driven by motives of personal land acquisition. The narrative that Oba Ajibade seeks to claim the land for the benefit of Owo is misleading; any successful acquisition would serve the interests of the Olowo and his family, not Owo community or future Olowo. The Ondo State Government and the Olowo must address the following: 1. Did Oba Ajibade or AgroMore Limited receive compensation when the Mimiko administration acquired the land in 2010? The answer is unequivocally no. Records confirm that only the aforementioned families, whose ancestral homes occupied the land, were compensated. We challenge the government to produce any evidence of compensation paid to AgroMore Limited. 2. Prior to the 2010 acquisition, the land was occupied exclusively by family homes. Which of these belonged to AgroMore Limited? Are we to believe that Oba Ajibade, then a level 12 civil servant, legally purchased a family home on this land? The demolition of the Owo Memorial Park by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Olowo of Owo was not only an act of destruction but a betrayal of public trust. The Ondo State Government’s narrative, riddled with inconsistencies and incoherent lies fell flat on its face. It was an embarrassing exercise. What we are witnessing is a decision by Governor Aiyedatiwa to reallocate public land for private gain. Now we know that Kabiyesi is so desperate to grab the land and care less about the memory of those whose lives were cut short on June 5, 2022. Humanity is a luxury for Aiyedatiwa. It doesn’t seem like what he could afford. We urge the public to demand clarity, to hold those in authority accountable, and to preserve the sanctity of Owo’s collective heritage. Truth, however inconvenient, will always prevail. Signed: Samuel Omoyajowo Secretary, Owo Reformed Vanguard

The Nigerian American Football Association (NAFA) has embarked on a pre-scouting tour to identify top athletes in both male and female categories across Nigeria. The scouting campaign, which kicked off in Cross River on Monday, is being conducted in partnership with The Uprise and will visit other states, including Delta, Kwara, Ondo, and Ekiti, before concluding on May 20, 2024. According to NAFA President, Engr. Babajide Akeredolu, "We are excited to launch this pre-scouting tour, which will serve as a precursor to our upcoming camp in Lagos. Our goal is to discover fresh talent and provide a platform for young athletes to break into the sport and become emerging stars. "We believe that American football has the potential to thrive in Nigeria, and we are committed to developing the sport and creating opportunities for our athletes to succeed." The scouting campaign has already seen a strong turnout of young athletes in Cross River, all eager to showcase their skills and take the first step towards becoming professional American football players. The selected players will have the opportunity to participate in the International Player Pathway (IPP) program, which provides a platform for athletes to compete at the highest level. NAFA's pre-scouting tour is a significant step towards developing American football in Nigeria, and the association is committed to creating a sustainable and successful program that will benefit athletes and the sport as a whole. The Uprise, the main sponsor of the scouting exercise through its Flag Football League, is a pioneering talent-scouting and training program conceived by Osi Umenyiora, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants. This innovative league is Nigeria's first ultra-competitive American Flag Football program, dedicated to cultivating and developing the skills of African youth in a previously underserved region. The Uprise has achieved a remarkable milestone, successfully placing three African athletes on NFL rosters. Following a series of training camps across multiple African countries, select individuals were invited to Arizona for further development. Notably, Kehinde Oginni Hassan, Haggai Chisom Ndubuisi, and Chigbo Roy Mbaeteka, all of whom had no prior experience in organized football, impressed NFL general managers and secured contracts. https://www.9jacitynews.com/nafa-launches-pre-scouting-tour-to-discover-fresh-talent-in-nigeria/

•Says His Administration Will Not Touch LG Funds Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has distributed 18 Units of JMC Pick Up utility vehicles for the use of the 18 Local Government Chairmen across the state. The Governor also handed over three Pick Up vehicles to the State Security Network, codenamed “Amotekun”, as part of his administration’s efforts to boost security operation in the state. The vehicles were handed over to the council chairmen and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, who doubles as the Commander of the Amotekun corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, at the Governor’s office, Alagbaka, Akure on Thursday. Governor Akeredolu explained that the vehicles were bought and distributed to the local government chairmen in order to ensure smooth operations at the local government level. Recall that the Governor last year commissioned and distributed 18 units of SEM–919 Motor Graders for the usage of the 18 local governments in the state. Arakunrin Akeredolu disclosed that his administration will never touch money meant for the local governments but will continue to ensure that the funds are properly used. He said the vehicles distributed were bought from money which was saved from the local government fund, particularly remaining fund gathered after payment of workers. Governor Akeredolu warned that the vehicles are not meant for individuals, stressing that they are bought for the local councils for the use of the chairmen. He charged the chairmen to use the vehicles very well, adding that it should be used for work purposes. “To the Local Government Chairmen, I want to congratulate you. Under the able leadership of the Deputy Governor and your commissioner, they have done well. You chose to find a way for us to be able to buy these vehicles. I advised that you save up for sometime and we arrange for these vehicles to come and you complete payment on installment. I am glad that you only have one installment to complete it now. “These vehicles are not for any individual. We have not bought vehicle for any Individual. We have bought these vehicles for each local government. And for the chairman to use. Use these vehicles very well. You are chairman today, but you may not be tomorrow. Use it very well. Because when you leave, you are not taking it away. “When you leave here, get to ODIRS, get the vehicles registered in the name of the local government. Put the number plate there for all to see. Don’t cover number plates. Any vehicle that the number is covered, Amotekun will impound it. We have discussed it at the security council. Only Governor and the Deputy Governor are allowed. Get the number of headquarters of each of the local government,” he said. Governor Akeredolu also disclosed that the three vehicles bought for Amotekun from the local government savings were important due to the roles of government in security, adding that since the local government is a tier of government, it has to be involved. “The essence of this is for all of us to know that we are not forcing anything on anyone. The money you have now, use it to clear the road verges. These vehicles are for you to work and it can go on any terrain,” he noted. Earlier, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, commended the Governor for his transparency in the local government administration. He said: "Since the inception of this administration, you have never touched local government money. When I presented that we needed to save their money for capital project, you graciously approved. Part of that is what we used to purchase these vehicles for the smooth operation of local government in the state. 18 units for local governments and three for Amotekun corps.” The chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Ondo State chapter, and Chairman, Akoko Southwest local government, Hon. Augustine Oloruntogbe, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, thanked Governor Akeredolu for always supporting the local council chairmen in the state. UNIVERSITIES SHOULD PRODUCE PROBLEM SOLVERS, NOT JUST CERTIFICATE HOLDERS - GOV AKEREDOLU •Says True Intellectuals Must Intervene To Illuminate Nigeria Dark Paths •Bags Ajayi Crowther’s Doctor of Law Award Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has said that institutions of higher learning in the country will only be relevant when they start producing problem-solvers and not just certificate holders. Governor Akeredolu said the hollow repetition of outdated and inapplicable theories which are taught in the institution of learning will only produce highly certificated citizens who lack capacity to solve basic problems. The Governor declared that all true centres of learning must not be quiet at this crucial moment in the country, adding that “We live in a period when the interventions of true intellectuals are needed to illumine darkened paths.” Arakunrin Akeredolu spoke at the 12th and 13th combined Convocation ceremonies of the Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, Oyo State. Governor Akeredolu was also conferred with an award of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) of the University. He was accompanied to the event by his wife, Chief Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu. Other dignitaries on the Governor’s entourage included Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Tayo Alasoadura; Oba Fredrick Akinruntan Obateru, the Olugbo of Ugbo land; Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Engr. Ade Adetimehin; members of the House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bamidele Oleyelogun; President of the Customary court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Eunice Alade; members of the state executive council led by the Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu; Justice Alero Akeredolu of the State High Court; Executive Chairmen of local governments led by the Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, Oloruntogbe Augustine; commissioner-designates and recently appointed Special Advisers. Also at the event were Chief Akin Olujinmi, SAN; Chief Olusola Oke, SAN, Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, Rear Admiral Samuel Ilesanmi Alade (Rtd), Prince Ademola Adegoroye, members of the past state executive council and other important dignitaries. The Governor noted that all activities in the institutions of learning must be geared towards self-reliance, saying science must be promoted above superstitious beliefs. “Any institution of higher learning or research centre whose focus is not on these practical means of coming out of doldrums betrays its mandate,” he said. Governor Akeredolu tasked the academia not to be tired of educating the people on the best way possible out of the current predicament as a country. “They must enlighten us about the concept of federalism. We must know the limits and responsibilities of states as component units in a federation. “We should be certain of the meaning of a constitution as the basic law of a democratic country. There must not be doubts as regards political ideas such as sovereignty, legitimacy, rights and duties of citizens. “They must educate the people to understand why all authorities must be subordinate to the people and civil service must be made to actualize this objective. “Our centres of research and learning must be ready to come up with innovations on how best to plant our food and feed our people. We must depend on our children to fix our roads, hospitals and secure the land,” Arakunrin Akeredolu said. He stressed that the education of a citizen is the most important assignment of the society which he said is represented by the government at all levels. Governor Akeredolu said the challenges faced by any society must form the basis for the design of a curriculum of instruction, adding that its content must reflect the aggregate of the collective aspirations towards development. “The current process of certification, promoted vigorously by a system which appears content churning out graduates without requisite capacity for the qualifications with which they are saddled, must be reviewed. “Our universities must not be seen as centres of preparing young people for an ultimate carnival-like procession culminating in the award of degrees and diplomas which are a veritable embarrassment to the holders. “Certificates are mere evidence of participation in a process. They do not necessarily bear testimonies to capacity. The disturbing reality which finds expression in the presence of multitude of unemployed graduates in an underdeveloped country should be a source of deep anxiety. “While inadequate funding may be adduced as a factor militating against qualitative education, it is disingenuous and escapist to look away from the fundamental cause of progressive rot in the system. “There has been a disconnect between the social realities and the pretentious emptiness served as diets of instruction,” Governor Akeredolu lamented. Richard Olatunde Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Ondo State December 4, 2021.

ONDO STATE ANTI OPEN GRAZING LAW WILL BE ENFORCED, VIGOROUSLY The Ondo State Government is in possession of a video clip of the press statement issued by a so called association of cattle breeders, Miyetti Allah Kataul Hore, through its secretary, one Saleh Hassan. This uncouth, uncultured and, evidently, deracinated vagrant, left no one in doubt as regards the level of support certain criminal elements, like he, enjoy, deplorably. This man admits, without qualms, that members of his association have been frustrated to the point of taking to banditry and other forms of criminality to “fight poverty”. He makes too much weather of a cultural practice associated with an ethnic group and expects all other ethnic groups to accept such backwardness and adjust, accordingly, or be ready to face the ceaseless onslaught of the denizens of the forests, even those from other countries, who must rape, rob, maim, kill and despoil in response to “climate change”. They claim to be above the law of any State in the Federation. They warn of the imminent breach of peace and promotion of pervasive anarchy, if they are not allowed to ravage the sweat and toil of the long-suffering farmers who, apparently, don’t count for much in the scheme of things in their estimation. They thank the Federal Government and ask its functionaries and the National Assembly to ensure that they continue to kill, maim, rape and dispossess their victims, whose citizenship is not shrouded in any historical obscurantism and dependence on any nebulous protocol for dubious integration, with the ultimate aim of dispossessing the indigenous owners of the land. Any ethnic group, truly indigenous to the geo-political space known as Nigeria, should not be desperate to appropriate other people’s lands to assuage banditry, rape and robbery. Modernity imposes certain obligations on any social group which claims membership of the human race. It is arrogant, and this is being mild, for any assemblage of criminal upstarts, to seek to issue orders to the elected representatives of the people on the best way possible to administer their states. It is indulgence taken too far for a group of private businessmen to seek to take over people’s lands because of the mistaken belief of support for banditry. There is no ethnic group which does not parade an array of professionals in all walks of life. There is no ethnic stock bereft of sound and principled agents of advancement in a transitional society. It is disingenuous and fraudulent for any band of stragglers, certified felons, to paint a highly resourceful people, with the same indolent and retrogressive brush, a befitting epitaph for characters of Saleh Hassan’s felonious hue. No cultural practice permits of criminality. Banditry, rape and armed robbery should not be attributes of a people. Personal businesses must not become the prime occupation of a government of a geo-political space with multi ethnic groups. Our contemporary history is replete with events of brazen treachery as recompense for the warmth and hospitality extended to the underserving. Various communities live with painful memories and indelible scars. We refuse to become slaves in our land. We defeated treachery and unbridled arrogance. We are not prepared to cede any part of our ancestral heritage to enjoy “peace and progress” offered by associations of bandits, robbers, kidnappers and rapists. Saleh and his sponsors should be content with the resources within his local environment if he is indeed indigenous to Nigeria. No part of our land will be given to foreigners who cling to a dubious regional protocol as an instrument validating dispossession. Let him practice his cultural practices on his father’s land. His likes will not be permitted to operate with impunity in Ondo State. We will defend our land. Ondo State has a law which prohibits open grazing. The Government has a responsibility to implement the law for the benefit of the people of the State and those, who may share in their aspiration for development of their God-given space. The people of Ondo are hospitable. They will, however, be unable to tolerate and condone invasion of their lands. No bandit will operate in Ondo State under any dubious guise. vedaxcool:The achievements of Akeredolu as Governor of Ondo State cannot be reduced to payment of salaries. His strides in massive infrastructural developments, Industrialization, Road construction, investment drive and security cannot be over-emphasised. No one can deny that all the Nigeria states are not financially stressed. Before the dwindling revenue due to the pandemic, Akeredolu was paying salaries as and when due and also paying the salary arrears owed by the previous government in the state. Despite the dwindling revenue, Akeredolu is still trailblazing with massive strides. Just recently, he celebrated the first 100days of his administration’s 2nd Term in office with numerous strides.
