The local currency rose N2 to N468 against the dollar from N470 it was traded on Monday. While, on the interbank market the Naira closed at N304.75 to the greenback.
NA REAL RECORD BREAKER
Truth234: The Nigerian Naira appreciated on the parallel market on Tuesday, following the introduction of Travelex to the Bureau De Change segment last week.
The local currency rose N2 to N468 against the dollar from N470 it was traded on Monday. While, on the interbank market the Naira closed at N304.75 to the greenback.
Last week, Travelex commenced the sales of dollar to Bureau De Change operators in the country, and immediately started selling directly to travellers to further boost liquidity in the market and aid economic activities.
Samed Olukoya, a foreign exchange research analyst at Investors King Limited, said “If the CBN and Travelex can sustain the current arrangement it, will help fight speculation and gradually prop up the Naira value against the dollar.”
While, other experts have said the Naira was being battered by market speculators and that the N500 exchange rate to the dollar was not the true value of the local currency.
However, Aminu Gwadabe, the president of the Association of Bureau De Change Operators, said that the authority still have to review the selling price of the dollars to the Bureau De Change operators to encourage Nigerians in Diaspora, whose remittances was being sold to the Bureau De Change operators.
He further stated that the new improvement in the Naira value would discourage the patronage of unlicensed parallel market traders and likely impact the progress made thus far.
mokoshalb: Are you thinking of launching a blog? A blog is something that can give your voice a new wing. It's always great to have a blog but it is even better to have a well-planned blog. A small mistake can take away all the hype your blog deserves to get. Here are 9 things you need to consider before launching your first blog.
1. Choose your Blogging Platform Wisely: When you are going to have a blog, you need a platform where your site is going to be hosted. There are dozens of blogging platforms to choose from. From them, WordPress.org, blogger.com and are the most popular. It's now up to you to choose the one that suits your need. For example, if you are not in a position to invest money on hosting you can choose Google’s blogger platform (it's free). If you want more control and power to your blog, choose WordPress.org. With WordPress.org you have full rights over your content.
2. Choose the Right Domain Name: Your domain name becomes your business's nick name in the online world. Choose a domain name that fits your topic well. Having a keyword in the domain is still great. But avoid using exact match domains (EMDs). A .com domain is more preferred and widely used; however you can get country specific domains if you want to focus on a particular country. For example, if your audience is from Nigeria you can opt for .COM.NG or NG.
3. Register your social profiles: This is a very crucial step that comes in between buying your domain and publicly launching your blog. You have to be very fast registering your social profiles after you have bought a domain to avoid someone else from registering it. In that case it will cause a problem in branding and identity crisis.
4. Your Interest: No wonder anyone can open up a blog but only the passionate people survive the first year of blogging. You have to think what your interest is and which topic can never bore you from writing. You should also not choose a topic that has no audience or has limited scope of growth. Choose a niche that interests you and has scope of growth for the coming years.
5. Design your Blog: No one would like to visit a site that has a clumsy design or one that confuse the reader. But as a beginner this part seems to be an hindrance, you can start with a simple design and as you move forward you start getting enlightened about more design techniques, If you still can't get the design, you can pay top bloggers to get it done for you..
6. Write at least 10 to 15 posts before your launch: When you launch your product with a bang, immediate visitors should not be disappointed to see only 1 or 2 posts. Instead, serve them a full meal of 10-15 posts so that they can enjoy their session. This idea is extremely helpful for newbie bloggers because: a) Your audience can better understand you: With 10 posts your readers can understand your voice, your tone and your style of writing. b) It will decrease bounce rates: You wouldn't want Google Analytics, to register high bounce rates for your newly launched blog. c) You get more time: When you are launching a site, you have tons of task to do. You need to market it on social media, comment on relevant blogs, build relationships and reply to comments on your own blog. For this you need time. And if you have some 10-15 posts you can have enough time for doing all these.
7. Improve your social skills: Blogging is nothing but a social platform revolutionized. You cannot take it to the next level if you are not social. Before even you launch your blog polish your social skills. Start by visiting popular blogs in your niche, comment there and build a relation. This will help you in the launch of your new blog.
8. Funds: “You need money to run a successful blog” that is the truth. You cannot blog for long if you do not have adequate funding. The industry standards and my own experience says, you should not start pushing ads or affiliate posts to your audience right from the launch date. Most ad programs like AdSense, media.net etc. also don't approve freshly launched blogs. A blog can potentially earn after 6 months of its launch. You should therefore, have sufficient monetary backup to support you during this period.
These are the tips that you should keep in mind before launching a blog. A clear strategy will always save you from untimely problems and embarrassment. SEO, small bits of HTML coding along with the blogging processes...
yungkizzymiami: The demolition of structures in the Abule Egba area of Lagos has left in its wake a gale of tears and joblessness, write ARUKAINO UMUKORO and MOTUNRAYO JOEL
In front of the one of the several buildings that were demolished recently at Abule Egba, a densely populated suburb in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, three little children were seen trying to make sense out of the confusion.
Wearing a sweatshirt and trousers with the green white green colour of the Nigerian flag, one of the children, a boy of about eight, was seen trying to fix his father’s broken keyboard, which was damaged during the bulldozers’ visit the day before, while the family’s television set lay on its face among the rubbles. A few feet away from him, a four-year-old girl wearing only white singlet was literally trying to lift off her crying two-year-old brother from the rubble. The little boy screamed as his sister tried holding him. He seemed unwilling to vacate the place now in ruins.
But all that lay before them was a pile of rubble caused by the bulldozers’ rage at noon. The kids were among the thousands that have either been rendered homeless or jobless by the recent demolition exercise carried out by officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on Wednesday and Thursday. The state government has said the demolition was a necessary measure to expand the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. As of Thursday, residents, landlords and business owners claimed that about 1,000 houses and shops in the area had been affected by the demolition exercise. They said they were only given a seven-day notice by the state government.
When 9JAWAKA visited the area on Thursday, the rubble, tears and sorrow the bulldozers left on its trail were still visible. Many watched with awe and despair as the heavy machines raged on.
Mattresses, home furniture and other household items were among the rubble, stretching more than 500 metres from the Abule Egba Junction, where a Reinforced Concrete Dual Carriage Flyover bridge, is still in its early stages of construction. Business, bank and residential buildings were affected by the demolition.
Many told our correspondent that they lost property worth millions and their means of livelihood to the exercise.
“The demolition has taken place; there is nothing we can do. I have lost millions to the demolition, I had many shops. There is serious economic recession and unemployment in the country. This demolition is inflicting more pain on us. I have only been managing and I have a wife and children to take care of. We have only been hearing that the government would compensate us but we do not know how true it is. Life goes on. My point now is, people have been rendered jobless and homeless.
“One of those who rented shops in my building received a call in my presence on Wednesday. I heard him asking the caller to help him look for a job. He is a graduate but he rented a shop to sell paints to make a living,” said Mr. Olawole Olanrewaju, a landlord in the area.
Another property owner in the area, Mr. Oladeinde Bakare, lamented that his one-storey apartment with three flats was affected.
Bakare, who had lived in the area since 1980, said the state government reneged on its agreement with the landlords in the area to demolish structures within a 32-metre marking from the electric pole near the road.
He said, “But they (state government) increased the marked area further to about 92 metres which extended to my house. I thought there was going to be further discussion on the matter. We wrote a letter to the state government, but our efforts were to no avail. I would spend about N1m to fix the demolished part. There was no way we could have found another apartment within the seven-day ultimatum they gave us. We are at the mercy of hoodlums and there is no security.”
Many others are now homeless, like a petty trader, Mrs. Alimot Akintunde. SUNDAY PUNCH met her in front of what used to be her home, in tears. “This was the room my family and I used to sleep in,” she said, pointing to a portion in the rubble. “I am so sad; we have nowhere to sleep. Our property is scattered all over the place. I have been crying since. I do not know where to go. There is nothing left for me.”
Like many of the tenants in some of the demolished buildings, Akintunde had lived in one of them for about thirty years.
“I was born in Abule Egba. This is the only home I have known and my father was buried there,” said another resident, who inherited the property from his father. The father’s white tomb was covered with remnants of the building.
At another three-storey building, some members of an extended family were seen huddled up at different sections, lamenting their fate. They could not hold back tears and grief as they condemned the actions of the state government.
“We have lived here since 1982. My father is a retired soldier and over 70 years old. He is very depressed about the demolition of his building. I am angry but what can we do?” said Abdusalam Aliu, a son to the owner of the building
Another son and student of the National Open University, 27-year-old Rahman Abdusalam, said the state government was insincere with the way it went about the demolition.
“I was born here. The state officials did not say anything about compensation for us. I want to beg them to make the compensation a very quick one so that we can get another accommodation. We all slept outside on Wednesday. Some thieves were also caught stealing the property of our neighbours,” he said.
The pastor of First African Church Mission, Abule Egba, Venerable J.A. Akande, lamented that 104 years of the church’s proud history had been demolished in one swoop. He showed our correspondent pictures of the old and new church.
Akande said it took the congregation 22 years to erect a new structure beside the old one they had used for over a century.
Despite their loss, the congregation at First African Church Mission, Abule Egba branch, held a service a few hours after a section of their historic church building was brought down.
He said, “The demolition happened between 1pm and 3pm on Wednesday. But we still managed to worship in the building. We found a spot that could accommodate us. We just had to pray to God to send us help because we do not know where to start from. It took us 22 years to erect a new structure and it was destroyed within an hour or two. Sadly, the old church building was also demolished.”
Business owners and workers in the area also lamented their losses. Structures housing an outlet of a popular eatery, Tantalisers and a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank were among those affected.
A manager at the eatery, who did not give his name, said over 50 of employees of the fast food firm lost their jobs to the demolition.
“The building has been in existence for seven years. The bakery downstairs produced about 10,000 loaves per day. We had 30 workers in the bakery and over 20 working upstairs in the eatery. I believe in the rule of law and that things should be done according to the rule of law. A lot of people felt bad about it because they government did the right thing but in a wrong way,” he said.
Some of the aggrieved persons included the workers at a fish processing company. The workers were seen assessing the damage with hollow eyes. One of them, Ms. Badmus Abiola, said she searched for a job for almost a year before she was employed in the company four months ago. “Now, look at what has happened. Where am I going to get another job?” she lamented.
A human resource manager at the company, Mr. Adeyemo Olabimtan, a graduate of accounting, also echoed the same. He said, “I had been looking for a job for years until I got one as a human resource manager in the fish processing firm. I have been working there since last year. I have not been married because of unemployment. The company has in operation for over 20 years.”
The owners of the houses pulled down claimed they had genuine certificates of occupancy.
When contacted on the telephone, the state Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Wasiu Anifowose, said residents hEYAH with original certificate of occupancy would be compensated by the state government.
Anifowose said, “What we have in Abule Egba is a federal land acquired in 1971. It has a gazette and there are laws to that. What the Federal Government did with the gazette is what we are doing. If their houses fall within the right of way and they have the certificate of occupancy, they should take it to the office. We will then look at the certificate of occupancy and they would be adequately compensated if the certificate of occupancy is genuine. Anybody that has a title document on his property will be compensated.”
He added that the government would not remove any house that did not fall within the right of way.
‘‘What we are doing is for the people. We will only take what is needed, not an inch or a property more than what is required for the expansion. I think it is about time we citizens believed our government. This is Lagos State, whatever we say, we stand by it,” he stated.

importexpert: Different forms of internet marketing tactics appear and disappear online all the time. But when you're managing an online business you need reliable internet marketing tactics that aren't suddenly going to become redundant. for newbies in the house that still wonder what internet marketing is, Businessdictionary defined it as Marketing efforts done solely over the Internet. according to webopedia, internet marketing, or online marketing, refers to advertising and marketing efforts that use the Web and email to drive direct sales via electronic commerce.in a simpler term, according to Importexpert, internet marketing is any legitimate effort you make to earn online. it can be mini importation, affiliate marketing, ecommerce, blogging etc.
The 5 internet marketing tactics below will never go out of fashion. In fact, the only way they will, is if people stop using the internet altogether. And how likely is that?
1. Content Marketing
several years ago when i started learning about blogs, forums and websites in general, i was always told that content remains king. as true as it was then, so is it also true today. High quality website content material is essential if you want to make an impression on your target. The more quality content on your website, the more you will improve on the organic traffic from the search engines. Also, when websites are updated regularly with content that is useful, thorough and provides value, the more repeat visitors and customers you will have. take Nairaland as an example and you will understand better. it is the presence of regularly updated high quality content that makes you type "nairaland" on your browser daily
2. Search Engine Optimization
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is all about tuning your website to get highest search engine results rankings possible to drive organic, non-paid, traffic to your website. Over 90% of internet searches go to sites that are on the first page of search results. You need to ensure that your internet marketing tactics for SEO adhere to a search engine's terms of service. This includes providing quality content using suitable keywords and making your website easy to navigate. take Nl as a case study again, some years ago around 2008 or so, i use to think seun has a partnership with google and they were directing traffic to him. the reason was that everything i searched google tells me to go to NL. the truth is that you need to make your site seo friendly and you will thank me later.
3. Online Branding
If your website looks unprofessional, is complicated to navigate, is full of spelling mistakes or takes an age to load, it's not going to reflect very well on your business brand. You need to prove that you are legitimate internet business, not a fly-by-night operation that will disappear as soon as you've got hold of the customer's money. Remember the law in "48 Laws of power" that says "your reputation is all that you have, guard it with your life". although i dont remember law number what it was but your brand online is just like your reputation, make it to stand out at what ever cost.
4. The Power Of Social Media
Social media is not going to go out of fashion. More than 72% of internet users are active on social media platforms. Using social media correctly can really push you in front of your competitors. Social media websites have a high number of site visitors that enable you to engage and communicate with your target audience.
5. Video Marketing
Internet users love video. Statistics show that sales pages with a video convert 80% better than those that do not. Video is an internet marketing tactic that can develop your online presence dramatically. They can be made quickly on a smartphone and uploaded online in minutes. Videos sites like YouTube and Vimeo will not be going out of fashion any time soon as the popularity of video gets bigger by the day.
On May 25, 2016, Ikenna Osuji, a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, who was working as a taxi driver along to finance his studies, met his death in the hands of kidnappers when he drove into a land where 30-year-old Chinedu Azuazu was a security guard.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that Ikenna was fairly known to Azuazu because he used to drive prospective land buyers to the large expanse of land guarded by Azuazu in his cab. But May 25 was the last day the young man would ever be seen alive. He drove into the land again that day and was never seen again.
When Azuazu was nabbed on September 12, 2016 by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Response Team, details of the gruesome end Ikenna met in the hands of his captors emerged.
Azuazu, a father of one living at Omouku area Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said he was employed to guard the land in question, which belonged to the Alakahia community close to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
He said, “The man who employed us never paid us. He would rather take us to a bar and buy us drinks and then give us small money, like N3,000. It was too small for me. When my wife became pregnant and I needed money to prepare for our coming child, he refused to assist me. “I saw my chance to make money when Ikenna came to our site on May 25. My colleague, Joshua, and I decided to kidnap him. We believed he was from a rich family and thought that was why he normally brought people to buy land at the site.
“When we sighted him, we threatened to shoot him with our double-barrelled gun. We then kidnapped and took him deep into the forest. While we kept him there, we called his relatives with his phone and demanded a N5m ransom. “Ikenna’s brother told us that he did not have up to that amount. We reduced the ransom to N2m and threatened to kill him if they did not pay. While we were waiting on the family to pay us the ransom, Ikenna spent 14 days in our custody. “On the 15th day, I left him in Joshua’s custody to go and buy some food. When I returned I found him lying motionless on the ground. I asked Joshua what happened and he told me that when I was away, Ikenna attempted to escape and he almost overpowered him before he found a stick and hit him in the head.” Azuazu said he checked Ikenna’s pulse and realised that he was still breathing but faintly.
According to him, there was nothing he could do to help the young man and had to leave him on the ground till he breathed his last.He said after few hours, he went to check Ikenna’s pulse again and noticed that he had died.
The suspect said, “I called his brother, who had been communicating with us about the ransom and he said he could only afford N120,000. I asked him to take it to the Teaching Hospital Road and drop it at a certain spot. “He did as I instructed and I went there to take the money. We took part of the money to the Rumuola Market and bought a bedsheet, which we took to the forest to wrap Ikenna’s body. We stuffed it in the boot of his car and took it to a farm in Umunkwa Igbodo in Etche Local Government of Rivers State, where we dumped it. “We later sold the car, a Nissan Primera, in Owerri, Imo State for N180,000. We shared the money and the ransom. I took N158,000 and gave Joshua N148,000. As soon as Joshua collected his share, he disappeared. I have not seen him since that day. I used part of my share to pay a loan I took for my wife’s delivery.” A source said when police investigators visited Alakahia community, a chief, Hyacinth Akwukwauegbu, told them that a corpse was found on his farm and that it had been buried without reporting the discovery to the police.
Azuazu said after Joshua left, he also travelled to Lagos to search for a job but had to go back to Port Harcourt when no job was forthcoming.
The suspect said, “Few days before my arrest, I had a dream that my former boss, Ibe, was killed. I called to warn him but he asked if I had anything to do at the time. When I told him I had no job, he told me to come and see him. When I got to his house, the police arrested me and said I killed Ikenna. I did not know how they knew. “I thought God had forgiven me. In July 2016, I went to a pastor and confessed what I did. He prayed for me and warned me against going back to crime. I have heeded his warning. After my arrest, I have also met Ikenna’s brother to ask for forgiveness.” Ikenna’s elder brother, Peter, who was the one the kidnappers contacted, said he paid N1.2m as ransom as against the N120,000 Azuazu admitted to.According to him, Ikenna bought a car and used it as cab to support himself in school.
He said, “Anytime he was on break, he came to Port Harcourt to use his car as a taxi. I first noticed that sometime was wrong when I had not seen for some days and I got a call from one of my in-laws, who confirmed the same thing that he was missing. “The day I got a call from his kidnappers, I was about to ask him where he had been because the call came from his line when they told me they had abducted him and I should pay or they would kill him. For the weeks they were in touch, they refused to allow me to speak with him.
“I had to sell one of my properties to raise N1m to add to the little cash I had. But they insisted that it had to be N5m and that if they killed Ikenna, his blood would be on my head. I was terrified and went everywhere in search of money.
“When I eventually got N1.2m, I called them and lied that I had N2m. They told me to take it to East-West Road and drop it there. They said if they saw any glimpse of a policeman, they would kill my brother. When I got to Alakahia Junction, and dropped the money as instructed, I called Ikenna’s line but it was switched off. I had to quickly report the mater to Chuba Police Division and the matter was later transferred to the Rivers State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Department.”
Peter said after one month of seeing no trace of his brother, he started visiting prophets for help in desperation. The prophets told him his brother would be found alive. He later reported the case to the Inspector-General of Police Response Team, who commenced investigation and eventually tracked down the suspects.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that the police eventually arrested Ibe, who employed Ikenna’s killers as guards.
The corpse of the deceased was later exhumed and deposited in the mortuary.
The police have said investigation was still ongoing in the case.

dataland: Google is now officially an adult. The internet giant is celebrating its 18th birthday on Tuesday with an animated Doodle shown to web browsers around the world.
The company, founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, traditionally marks its birthday on the Google homepage on September 27. In 2004, its 6th birthday Doodle went online on September 7 and in the year before that, it was September 8.
In fact, none of these dates seem to have any particular relevance. The company's own history lists its incorporation date in 1998 - the nearest thing to a corporate birthday - as September 4.
And the idea for Google began years earlier in 1996, as a research project at Stanford University, when Page and Brin had a new idea for a search engine that would rank pages by how many other sites linked to it, rather than the crude format others used at the time - ranking them by how often the search term appeared on the page.
Google alluded to confusion over its birthday in 2013, admitting it had celebrated its birthday on four different dates, but September 27 now seems to have stuck. The company may have just chosen the date because it was what the first birthday Doodle in 2002 used. Google has celebrated its birthday with a Doodle every year since its fourth birthday in 2002. However, the first Doodle, for the Burning Man festival in 1998, actually occurred before the company was technically founded.
Last year, the company split under a new corporate umbrella, Alphabet, which hived off more outlandish divisions of the company such as its driverless cars unit and robotics subsidiary Boston Dynamics. The change saw its founders move away from Google’s day-to-day running. 18 years after it was founded at Stanford University, Google is one of the world's most powerful companies. It is second only to Apple in value, with a market capitalisation of $541bn (£417bn).
Page and Brin are ranked 12th and 13th on Forbes' list of the richest people in the world, with net worths of $35.2bn and $34.4bn respectively.
However, not even Google seems to really know when it was formed.
