Boko Haram insurgents have taken over Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger, Governor Sani Bello announced on Monday, a development that threatens Nigeria’s power infrastructure and the capital Abuja.

Shiroro hosts one of Nigeria’s largest power stations and the overrun LGA is barely 200 kilometres from Nigeria’s capital Abuja.

Mr Bello said more than 3,000 people have been displaced across the state, including those fleeing Shiroro and Munya LGAs.

“We have over 3,000 people here from communities that have been displaced by bandits and Boko Haram elements around Munya and Shiroro Local Government Areas,” he said. “However, some of them have started going to their various homes.”

“There are some other communities that we think are safe but a vast majority of them will have to remain here because their villages and towns have been taken over by the Boko Haram elements.

“Their wives have been forcefully attached to Boko Haram elements. In fact, I just heard they have already placed their flag in Kauri which means they have taken over the territory,” the governor added.

Niger has faced a relentless assault from rampaging bandits in recent months. The state was at the centre of repeated abductions earlier this year and continues to endure insecurity. The governor now said the Boko Haram elements have also infiltrated the state and could soon march on Abuja, which shares a border with Niger.

Boko Haram’s activities in central Nigeria as confirmed by Mr Bello came days after the insurgents overran Geidam, a large but densely populated community in Yobe. The insurgents have reportedly circulated their flyers and asked all residents to comply to the dictates of an emerging caliphate

A commander of one of the Nigerian army’s battalions fighting insurgency in the north-east may have been killed, military sources have told TheCable.

The commander, a lieutenant-colonel, was feared killed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents who attacked a military base in Mainok, Borno state, on Sunday.

Thirteen soldiers were also said to have been killed in the attack.

TheCable had earlier reported how soldiers engaged the insurgents.

But sources who spoke with TheCable said the troops were overpowered by the insurgents who came with “heavy weapons”.

“They had four MRAPs [armoured military vehicles], four gun trucks and other heavy machines,” one of the sources said.

“As I speak, the commanding officer has been hit, and some other soldiers.

“There was air support, but sadly, the air force missed its coordinates and couldn’t eliminate the insurgents.”

Another source also said “the troops have been dislodged from the camp as the insurgents are taking over.”

The insurgents, who were said to have stormed the base at about 2pm on Sunday, disguised in a military convoy and gained access into the premises before shooting sporadically and killing the soldiers.

The insurgents also razed down a police station and looted weapons at the military base.

A military source said the insurgents operated for about two hours before fleeing the scene of the attack.

When contacted, Mohammed Yerima, army spokesperson, said he will provide an update on the attack later

My point is education should be compulsory for people like you

Especially economics as a subject

Our money has depreciated badly

Having said that,

Compare the same with developed countries you will see a marginal growth not the way ours is

The truth is the only thing that can work for Nigeria right now is they should practice true federalism like America

All states should fend for themselves, all local government should be in charge of his taxes , resources, security and infrastructure

Hey should remit what ever percentage to the federal if there will be one.

PoliticsGanduje Dollar Videos: Police Storm Daily Nigeria In Search Of Jaafar Jaafar by sarrki(op): 1:32am On Apr 20, 2021
Armed policemen have stormed the Abuja head office of the DAILY NIGERIAN newspaper in search of its publisher, Jaafar Jaafar.

In October 2018, DAILY NIGERIAN had published video clips of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, stuffing bundles of dollars, suspected to be a bribe from a contractor, in his pockets.

The governor, in an interview with BBC Hausa on March 19 disclosed that he was making plans to deal with those who released the videos.

Mr Jaafar, subsequently, wrote a petition to the then Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, raising an alarm over renewed threats to his life.

Ever since the governor’s threat, the publisher said he had been noticing unusual movements around both his Abuja and Kano residences.

On Thursday, April 15, a team of police officers, numbering four, stormed the Abuja office of DAILY NIGERIAN looking for Mr Jaafar who had at the time stepped out for an official engagement.

Our correspondent, who monitored the police officers’ movement, observed that three of the policemen came into the newsroom and another officer positioned himself outside of the office probably in anticipation of any resistance of arrest.

“When they noticed that our Editor-In-Chief was actually not in the office, they then dropped a letter inviting him to the force headquarters for questioning,” Ibrahim Ramalan, the newspaper’s associate editor said.

In the letter signed by ACP A. A. Elleman, the head of the recently-disbanded IGP Monitoring Unit, said that “This office is investigating a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Defamation, Injurious Falsehood and Inciting Violence to the Inspector General of Police in which your name featured.

“In view of the foregoing, you are kindly requested to interview the undersigned on Monday 19th April 2021 by 10.00am prompt through SP Usman Garba (Admin Officer) to shed more light on the allegation.

“Your cooperation in this regard would be highly appreciated, please,” part of the letter reads.

Responding from his hideout, Mr Jaafar said he learnt on good authority that the police were planning to file “cybercrime charges” against him for exposing the governor’s corruption
