I am a banker and I have read through all the writings that my dinstiguished nairalanders have posted.I'm really impressed the way we take issues affecting us as a Nation.Though we may disagree,I am really touched by the sense of urgency and patriotism in your writings Let me start by saying that no institution, industry or sector can be more developed than the country in which they operate. So we must first acknowledge that most problems raised are typical of us as a Nation. On the banking side,I acknowledge that outrageous charges exists,I acknowledge that ATM problem exists,I also acknowledge that manpower problem exists, but these problems are not cast on iron.Competition exists to check most of these problems. Also ,asking your bankers for a waiver for some of the outrageous charges eg upcountry transfer fees, cot reduction etc is not a bad idea at all. On the Regulatory side, the truth is that they are not 21st century compliant, neither are they computer friendly. If they actually carry out adequate and thorough inspections on banks, most of these problems would be discovered and objections raised.Besides there should be a customer complaints desk set up in both CBN and NDIC where members of the public can go and lay their complaints. They should not sit down in the comfort of their offices and leak vital information to the foriegn press. As for the Government, substantial efforts should be made to create a friendly business atmosphere. The necessary infrastructures should be put in place eg effective and efficient means of transportation,Power generation, security. All these would go a long way in reducing the cost of doing business in the Country. Finally to the customers, bear it in mind that banks are not charitable organizations. They all have a basic objective which is profit maximization. The customers objectives vary but includes cost minimization, risk minimization, service optimization as well as returns optimization. Therefore a balance should be stuck. My candid advice is that you sit down with your prospective bankers or existing bankers and trash out issues that you feel would hinder you from achieving your desired objective{s} with a view to reaching a balance. Thank you and God bless you all.May His Grace lead us all through the challenging days ahead. |
obj, here is a man who did good and who did evil, on the good side you have the new pension act,you have the gsm,you have efcc, then you have the udi massacre, you have the obasanjo trust scandal, then you have the failed third term agenda, then you have the arbitrary hike in pump prices of petroleum products, then you have the scandalous library project, then you have the removal of senate presidents of which he master minded, then you have election mal practices of which he was a beneficiary and then a benefactor, then you have the removal of governors at the president's wish, then you have the unresolved high class murders, then you have corruption at the executive level at an un imaginable scale, then you have various strikes by all kind of unions, then you have the selective victimization, Obasanjo's regime was a cynical sarcasm |

i believe that it is their level of academic qualification that have made them fiscally irresponsible, overtly vulnerable to pressure from the executive, greedy, lacking substance, cumbersome and undisciplined. |

i think caf has lost its relevance in promoting african football.we all saw Aboutrika and his team do their thing.I think he is Africa hero for 2008.I dont believe CAF judgement was done with utmost good faith.May God continue to bless Africa. |
i would remember babaginda as the man in the arena who failed with his head hidden below his belt. |

life has taught me that the light you see at the end of a tunnel is only the head light of an oncoming train. |
The Nigeria Police, the very people meant to protect and to serve, coming up with a cock and bull story that should only be told in fairy tales.I wonder whether comic relief is part of their job description. To even think that Government owned NTA could send its press crew to cover the event is even more embarrasing. We need a re direction in this country. |
May His soul and the souls of other faithfuls who have departed this sinful world rest in perfect peace.Amen |
Shonekan proved that you could be president without even contesting an election. Obasanjo proved that you could be president for life. Yar adua proved that we dont even need a president. |
i think the nigerian situation depicts a failing nation, which if the pertinent issues are not addressed could become a failed nation |
i would have been most worried if the decision went the other way |
