PhonesWanna Save Money When You Buy A Smartphone?? You Need This by scarycuteface(op): 11:50pm On Mar 27, 2020
Mobile phones have become an essential part of our daily lives, and almost everyone uses a smartphone for calls, emails, texting and more. Our smartphones also need to be upgraded every few years, because of heavier usage or a desire for the latest features.

Upgrading your smartphone can put a heavy dent in your finances, which is why many people use a loan for mobile phone purchases. Whether you pay from your pocket or buy a smartphone on credit, here are 6 ways to save some money on your purchase:

1. Avoid Buying from Carriers – Many mobile service providers offer attractive deals if you buy a smartphone through them. However, these phones are usually locked, so you can only use them with the same provider’s plans. To change providers, you will need to buy a new phone. Instead, compare smartphone prices with different retailers to find the best deal.

2. Consider Paying in Installments – Using a smartphone loan plan offered by retailers (easybuy) reduces the financial burden of buying a new phone. If you can make monthly payments towards the purchase, it’s easier to budget for this expense and spread it out over a longer period. Look for zero-interest payment plans, so you don’t end up paying extra for your phone.

3. Prioritize Features Over Brands – The ideal phone should have all the features you need and a battery that will see you through the day. Great looks wouldn’t hurt either, but your primary focus should be features you actually use, e.g. a powerful camera and extra storage if you love taking photos. These aspects are far more important than the brand name.

4. Check Smartphone Prices Online – Look for the best cheap smartphone online instead of visiting brick-and-mortar stores. You’re likely to find better deals and a larger selection on websites such as Amazon, since they have lower overhead costs than physical retail stores. Many of them pass on this benefit to customers through heavy discounts and promotions.

5. Save Money By Waiting for Deals – Sometimes the best way to save money when you buy a smartphone is to wait for the price to drop. Knowing when this could happen gives you an extra edge. You will usually get the best deals on smartphones around major festivals. The price of newer models also tends to go down a few months after their launch.

6. Look for Used/Refurbished Phones – If a new smartphone will stretch your budget too far, consider buying a used or refurbished one. Many retailers and manufacturers offer a warranty on ‘certified like-new’ phones. You can also get cheap smartphones in great shape from people who upgrade their devices every few months, often within the original warranty period.

Smartphones prices have been going up in recent years, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a great deal on one. Take your time comparing all the options, and be smart about it!
PhonesNigeria Imported 2.9 Million Smartphones In Q4 – Report by scarycuteface(op): 7:07pm On Mar 22, 2020
Nigeria has been named as one of the leading African markets that recorded the highest number of smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2019.

About 2.9 million smartphones were imported into the country in Q4 2019, growing by 5.3 per cent year on year, a latest report by the International Data Corporation has shown.

Analysts at the IDC said this was the seasonal growth as the Black Friday sales and Christmas season pushed up the demand for the devices.

It said the Tecno, Infinix, Itel phone models owned by Transsion Group as well as Samsung brands dominated the market in the quarter under review.

“Nigeria’s smartphone market expanded 5.3 per cent YoY to total 2.9 million units. Tecno, Infinix, Itel and Samsung continued to dominate the Nigerian market, launching various models and promotions with network operators to attract customers,” the report stated.

The IDC analysts said South Africa recorded the highest number of smartphone shipments, with 6.5 million units, growing by 2.2 per cent YoY.

A research analyst at the IDC, Arnold Ponela, said, “This increase can be attributed to seasonal factors, with Q4 traditionally being the strongest quarter of the year when demand is stirred by Black Friday and the Christmas season.

“Leading smartphone brands such as Samsung, Huawei and Mobicel have introduced feature-rich entry-level models, while network operators are offering discounted bundles and tariff plans to consumers. Both of these factors are spurring demand in the market.”

Overall, the IDC said African mobile phone market grew 3.8 per cent year-on-year in Q4 2019.

According to the research company, this growth was spurred by various end-of-year sales promotions, which were augmented by earlier Black Friday and Cyber Monday discount offerings.

It said sustained demand for entry-level phones launched throughout 2019 also supported shipment growth.

However, the analysts added that the growth was unlikely to be repeated over the following two quarters as the impact of the global COVID-19 outbreak might derail smartphone shipments to African market.

The IDC’s latest Worldwide Mobile Tracker showed that smartphone shipments to Africa rose 5.4 per cent YoY in Q4 2019 to total 24.4 million units.

This, according to the research company, represents quarter-on-quarter growth of 8.8 per cent.

Meanwhile, the report stated that the feature phone market was down 2.6 per cent YoY and 3.9 per cent QoQ to 34.4 million units.

However, with 58.4 per cent share, it added that feature phones continued to account for the majority of the African mobile phone market due to their relative affordability and durability.

The IDC said smartphone demand was driven by the launch of various new affordable and feature-rich models.

It added that Transsion brands (Tecno, Itel and Infinix) continued to dominate Africa’s smartphone space in Q4 2019, with 40.6 per cent unit share.

Samsung and Huawei followed in second and third place, with respective unit shares of 18.6 per cent and 9.8 per cent.

The Transsion brands, Tecno and Itel, also dominated the feature phone landscape with a combined share of 69.5 per cent while the HMD brand – Nokia – placed third with 10.2 per cent share.

“Transsion’s huge success can be attributed to the fact that its devices are competitively priced and largely purpose-built for African consumers. The vendor’s continued marketing efforts also enabled it to gain market share from more established brands,” Ponela added.

PhonesTECNO Camon 15 Will Be A Serious Cameraphone With Its 64MP Sony Camera by scarycuteface(op): 5:52pm On Mar 06, 2020
TECNO has a number of smartphones that have a specific target audience with the name. One of their popular lines in the Kenyan market is the Camon line and it is their photography centric line.

It seems like TECNO will take it up a notch with the next Camon line. The Camon 15 will feature a headlining 64MP camera as their main sensor at the back.

It is rumoured that it is a Sony sensor although it is not explicitly mentioned what the exact product name is. On further research, this could be the Sony IMX 686 sensor which has a relatively large 1/1.7 inch sensor with a pixel size of 0.8μm.

I would expect the Camon 15 to allow you to shoot native 64MP photos but I would bet it will be shooting 16MP photos as standard. The Sony IMX 686 sensor combines 4 pixels into one pixel to create a 16MP image with a ‘boosted’ pixel size of 1.6μm. You will see a number of phones sporting this sensor and Camon 15 could be one of them. This means that it will theoretically have sharper images with lower noise (grain in photos) which is great.

The 64MP sensor of the Camon 15 will be a significant update to the Camon fans since the current one on sale, the Camon 12 Pro has a 16MP camera.

We are still not sure about the rest of the specifications but expect 4GB or 6GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, a huge display and a huge battery pack. We will update you when we get more information about it.

PhonesWhat Are Things You Need To Look Out For When Purchasing A New Smartphone by scarycuteface(op): 6:59pm On Feb 23, 2020
There are a few things that you need to think about when you are buying a new smartphone. Some of them include whether the battery is big enough and even if it supports fast charging as well. If you want to help yourself even more then it helps to have a checklist of all the things that you need to look for so that you can make the best decisions overall.

Battery

You also need to make sure that you read reviews and that you also talk to people who already have the phone that you want as well. Ideally you want a phone that is going to last all day, so make sure that you prioritize the battery first. If you can, it also helps to have a smartphone that has a fast-charging battery. Some chargers are made so that they can charge up your battery in just half an hour, so this is great if you find that you are always running out when you need it the most. If you like to play games online at an online casino Nigeria then this could mean that you need a bigger battery as internet applications tend to be the biggest drain on your battery.

Display

You are probably going to be spending hours looking at your screen, so it helps to make sure that you have a good one. The screen needs to be sharp enough so that the text doesn’t look blurry and it also needs to be able to show colour really well too. If you are making the decision to go with a larger phone screen, then make sure that you go for a resolution that is around 1920 x 1080p. If you are able to splurge, then it helps to go for a 2560 x 1440 Quad Core. You also need to consider the screen size too. Think about it, are you able to reach across? Do you want to have a bigger screen for things like movies? Or would you prefer a smaller one so that you can hold it properly and not have it drop out of your hands?

Storage

There are so many people who try and save money by purchasing cheaper phones. This is great, but you may find that you end up not having much storage and this can really work against you. Ideally you need to make sure that your phone has at least 64gb of storage if you plan on downloading anything like movies or even music. Apps are much larger in this day and age so you have to make sure that you have a phone that can support everything.

The Camera

You also have to make sure that you are buying a phone that has a great camera. A lot of expensive phones, such as the Galaxy S9 and even the iPhone X are adept at taking pictures, even in low-light conditions. This means that you are still going to be able to get great pictures in low light restaurants or other related areas. Budget phones don’t tend to have a great camera so it’s important that you keep this in mind.

PhonesIndeed, TECNO Really Is For Nigerians by scarycuteface(op): 2:57pm On Dec 26, 2019
It has been quite a busy year for TECNO. Time and time again, TECNO went all out for Nigerians; positively impacting lives every chance it got. But that isn’t such a surprise considering the fact that the smartphone brand literary set out at the beginning of the year to touch lives and make it evident that the brand is one that cares for Nigerians.

It is a few days to the end of 2019, and indeed, TECNO has accomplished all that they promised to do, especially in the CSR department. They have truly differentiated their brand in more ways than one.

In 2014, TECNO started a children-centered CSR initiative that has seen to ensuring that many children from public primary schools across Nigeria win scholarships and many other prizes.

https://techcitynews-j092wdrrbg.stackpathdns.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Picture1.png

In line with that initiative, the theme on Children’s Day this year was “Give the Nigerian Child A Future”. In the Lagos region, five schools were selected to participate. After an examination to select the best students, scholarships were awarded to five students from each of the schools through the TECNO Foundation. There was also a Children’s Day Party that brought children from over 30 public schools together with plenty of fun and games plus numerous gifts.

https://techcitynews-j092wdrrbg.stackpathdns.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Picture2.png

Relentless, TECNO then got involved in another Get-a-Nigerian-through-school project called AcadaFest Scholarship 2019. Through this initiative, TECNO sponsored 3 deserving students for the duration of their University education. Like a soldier on a mission, TECNO joined forces with a few other sponsors to celebrate the musical legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. At the event, the smartphone brand made touch points with Nigerians by making the 6-day event even more fun filled. During the course of the festival, a lucky Nigerian got the chance to win a Spark 4, which was the latest device from the brand at the time, and there were also lots of gift up for grabs.

https://techcitynews-j092wdrrbg.stackpathdns.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Picture3.png

This year’s International Women’s day sought to encourage gender balance around the world. To lend a voice to the credible course, TECNO partnered with The University of Lagos’ Radio Station, Unilag 103.1, to put together a special program for young girls aimed at improving the quality of life of the girl child. In attendance were secondary school girls who were made aware of how very powerful their contributions to the country can be.

https://techcitynews-j092wdrrbg.stackpathdns.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Picture5.png

Nigeria is a land of dreams. Unfortunately, not all dreamers have the financial ability to make their dreams a reality. Understanding this fact, TECNO birthed a campaign called Light Up Your Dreams. The brand brought together many young Nigerian entrepreneurs with various business interests ranging from agriculture to technology.

https://techcitynews-j092wdrrbg.stackpathdns.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Picture6.png

At the grand finale of the month long campaign, TECNO SPARK Light Up Your Dream granted two winners N1 million each. There were also winners across the country who bought a SPARK 3 smartphone, got a raffle ticket and also emerged as millionaires in the raffle draw. TECNO lit up the dreams of these four lucky people even beyond their wildest dreams. We can go on and on to list the many ways that TECNO has made life better for Nigerians this year 2019, but the bottom line is, TECNO is really for Nigerians, and they plan for it to remain so.

PhonesMediatek Has New High-performance Processors For Gaming Smartphones by scarycuteface(op): 6:28am On Nov 25, 2019
The average consumer does not care which processor runs on their phone and for this reason, you will see the likes of TECNO, Infinix and budget Huawei devices skip on mentioning which processor they possess, instead, the manufacturer just throws around the number of cores in an effort to entice buyers.

Similarly, these budget and entry-level smartphones have prominently used MediaTek processors which are considered cheaper than their counterparts from Qualcomm. However, nerds have always been quick to point out that MediaTek processors are inferior to Qualcomm in terms of performance.

In the past, it seemed like MediaTek was comfortable serving mid-range and budget smartphones but now the company does not want to be passed by the new wave of gaming smartphones.

MediaTek has announced new high-performance G-Series processors with the MediaTek G90 and G90T being the first ones in this lineup. These processors are aimed at gaming smartphones and their specifications list tell it all.

The MediaTek G90 chipset comes with an Octa-core CPU clocked at 2.5GHz with the same ARM Cortex A76 and A55 architecture found in flagship Qualcomm and Kirin chipsets. There’s a Mali G76 GPU and support for up to 10GB of RAM.

That’s not all, the G90 processors have the following features:

- AI face detection support
- AI camera optimizations
- Dual wake-up word support for summoning smart assistants like Google Assistant and Alexa
- Intelligent network prediction engine that switches to LTE if the Wi-Fi starts to degrade
- Rapid response engine that optimizes screen inputs to reduce touch latency
- Call and data concurrency which keeps your data connection on even when a call connects
- Dual-wifi connections that allow a device to connect to two wifi connections
- Intelligent resource management
- Support for HDR-10 video output

As cool as all these features sound, their implementation will entirely depend on the smartphone manufacturers. Following this announcement, we’ll see whether smartphone makers will adopt the new chipsets and even more interesting, whether we will see budget gaming devices hit the market.

PhonesDangers Of Connecting To Free Wi-fi Networks by scarycuteface(op): 10:53am On Oct 28, 2019
Nowadays, competitive data plans have greatly reduced the cost of internet plans from what we used to have. With a stream of networks now contesting for the attention of the fans, as well as a higher market share, it is interesting to see how this has played out well for the market.

But, even at that, data can still be expensive.

Imagine how much data a user would have to consume if they were to enjoy a full movie on a streaming platform such a Netflix. Factor in how much a user would have to spend just to keep playing their favorite video games online.

All that, and we have not even gone deeper into other stuff that could make a user consume insane amounts of data in a little time.

It is, thus, little surprise why many people have turned to public Wi-Fi networks.

Free Wifi are usually provided as part of a service for users of such a service. That is why you can find them in schools, airports, hospitals and other private/ public institutions today.

Even though the occurrences of free Wi-Fi networks are not as widespread in these part as it is in the western world, they are fast taking over. Very soon, they will be everywhere you turn to.

The idea of that alone is very exciting.

Imagine not having to commit to your mobile data plans to download that massive Android OS update. Just think about how you can now download as many movies as you want or stream all the video content you can without the constant fear of how much data you are burning through always ringing at the back of your mind.

However, it is often said that nothing comes free, ‘not even in Freetown.’ The same saying holds true for public Wi-Fi networks. In fact, if you know how much you were directly paying, you would most likely do away with these services for good.

What dangers do public Wi-Fi networks pose?

Before launching into the range of problems they could cause for you, it is important to understand why they can cause those problems in the first place.

You should have observed that you don’t need to enter a password to connect to a public Wi-Fi network. To make this possible, the network providers need to have put the service at the lowest security settings so that no one is blocked out.

In other words, there is little to zero encryption on the network.

That becomes the cause of the issues below:

1 Data Monitoring and Collection

On a normal day, your internet service provider (ISP for short; such as MTN, Airtel, etc.) can see what you are doing when you access the internet. This is possible since your internet traffic streams through them. Since these institutions are regulated by the government, your data is not at so much of a risk with them.

The instance you connect to a public Wi-Fi network, though, your ISP becomes the entity offering such a connection. This means that airport, coffee shop, pizza place or where else you are now knows everything you are doing on the internet while connected to their network.

Since the network is not encrypted, a hacker could also gain access to your internet streams and see what you are doing on your computer.

For one, your new ISP can record and collect that data for other purposes. In fact, some of them sell this data to other companies who can do with your information as they so please.

On the other hand, hackers can use this chance to gain access to your bank account passwords, online login information, emails and so much more.

2 Man in The Middle Attacks

As the name implies, this happens when someone places themselves in between you and a server (such as website or app) that your device is supposed to be communicating with. Since the Wi-Fi network is not encrypted, they can intercept your messages and interactions with the other end of the server.

With such interceptions, they can even manipulate someone you are chatting with on the other end by relaying edited/ wrong messages to them instead. Likewise, they could use this approach to impersonate you and collect sensitive data from the other end of a conversation.

3 Malware Installation

Malware (viruses, trojan, keyloggers, etc.) can be installed onto your Android device in a variety of ways. Hackers have tried various means in the past: tricking you with phishing emails, loading malicious codes onto apps you install (even the Google Play Store is not safe sometimes), and so on.

One of the least talked about ways of placing a malware on your device is via a free Wi-Fi network.

By simply loading the said malware onto the network, every unit that connects to that network will automatically download the malware. The interesting thing is, this malware can stay on your device for months (even years) and you would not even know anything is amiss.

In this time, the hacker would have collected enough information to launch a hack on you.

4 Rogue Network Attacks

Another interesting Wi-Fi network attack comes in the form of rogue networks. Hackers simply need to get creative to pull this off – and that doesn’t take much of an effort.

Let’s assume you were at an airport which normally had a network named ‘AIRPORT 1.’ A hacker could get creative and make their own Wi-Fi network available with the name ‘A1RPORT 1’ or ‘AIRPORT I.’

If you don’t look at those two names very carefully, you would not see that the letter ‘I’ has been swapped for number ‘1’ in both cases.

Should you connect to any of the rogue networks, the hackers suddenly become your ISP. At that instant, they can hijack your device, steal sensitive data, install malware, etc.

Google recently announced distribution numbers for its Android operating system that put Android 9 Pie at 22.6% of all devices as of August 2019 – this is nearly a quarter of all Android devices when Android 10 launched.

Transsion is the parent company of TECNO, Infinix, itel and Syinix. Transsion Holdings is China’s largest phone exporter and Africa’s leading phone seller. In Q1 2019, Transsion brands like Tecno and Itel accounted for 33.1 % of the shipment volume. In terms of smartphone shipments exclusively, Transsion accounted for 37.4% in Q2 2019 beating Samsung and Huawei who shared 27.4% and 8.7% respectively.

Google lists that Transsion is among the companies that promised to update their devices to Android 10. The same list has companies like ASUS, LG, Motorola, OPPO, Realme, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and vivo. This is a good thing as Android fragmentation has been a huge problem for the operating system hence the small numbers of Android 9 Pie. Google is hoping through Project Treble, these OEMs will quickly update their devices to the recent Android version by the end of the year.

“Many manufacturers such as ASUS, LG, Motorola, OPPO, Realme, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Transsion, and Vivo have committed to updating some of their devices to Android 10 by the end of the year”

We can assume some of the recently launched devices from TECNO and Infinix will get the Android 10 update such as the TECNO Spark 3 Pro (it was in the Android Q Beta test program), the TECNO Phantom 9(its flagship device), the TECNO Camon 12 series and the TECNO Spark 4 series.

For Infinix, we can presume they’ll update the Infinix Hot 8 or the Infinix S5 to Android 10.

The tech giant recently required that all new devices launch with Android 10 already baked in if approved after January 31 2020. Transsion smartphone brands have always launched new devices with an older operating system when the new Android version has been available for months and hopefully this move will bring that change.
